Title: Happy Birthday Calvin & Hobbes!
Post by: Nathan on November 18, 2005, 08:52 PM
The first Calvin and Hobbes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_and_hobbes) strip premiered 20 years ago today:

C&H was (and still is) my favorite comic. I have about 90% of the book collections. It's great because it worked on so many levels--it's good fun that kids can enjoy, yet a lot of the strips (particularly the later years) had some philosophic meaning or cultural reference that I only really appreciate as I get older.

Man I miss that comic. :'(

Discuss.

Wow, 20 years? This happens to also be my favorite strip, and I have about 6 book collections. I miss this too.

20 years? Wow.

I have every book except for the last two. I liked C&H and the Far Side since they quit when they were ahead, instead of becoming like Garfield, which should have been ended in the 80s.

I didn't know it was so old!

This is my all time favorite strip, with second and third place going to Foxtrot and Far Side.

Happy Birthday!

EDIT: I accidentaly said young instead of old  :P

What a great comic strip.  It's a shame that it ended 10 years ago.

One of my favorites strips of all time. I know I just bought the Essential Calvin and Hobbes last Friday at Barnes and Noble. Happy B-Day and though I miss it, nice to see the author knew when to call it quits.

It's a shame that it ended 10 years ago.

That's why it's one of the best. Like Blackdog said, it's creator knew when to let it go.

My understanding is that Watterson's decision to call it quits had less to do with not wanting to get stale and more to do with frustrations over the syndication firm's unwillingness to protect his intellectual property.  United Press wanted to go forward with loads of merchandizing, but Watterson did not.  In the void of merchandize bootleggers took over (hence Calvin peeing on Ford/Chevy, countless fraternity t-shirts, etc.) and United was unwilling to do much to stop the bootlegging.

This is why I'm so absolutely disgusted everytime I see one of those Calvin Kneeling Before a Cross window stickers. . .it's using a stolen property to promote a Christian ideal.

I miss Calvin and Hobbe's.  I too have most of the books, but they're in pretty rough shape.  Am very tempted by the Complete editions.  These are absolutely beautiful, but WOW expensive.

I received a gift certificate to Amazon as a birthday gift and used it on this set.  They just arrived the other day and I am very impressed!  I now have to find a place to put them and also room for the Complete Far Side set that is also available.

Tough to believe that it has been 20 years.  Like the rest of you, C and H has always been one of my favorites and I looked forward to reading it each day.  I still read the reprinted/old versions on ucomics each day, and like many of you mentioned, it never did get stale.  I've always wanted to get the complete edition as well, but its just too pricey right now.  Calvin and Hobbes, Fox Trot, and the Far Side were always my favorites and some of the best out there I think.

Like most of you, I enjoyed this comic strip as did my father.

The creator was a strange fellow though who did not like attention.  I remember reading a story about him being honored at his high school with a hall of fame award - he is so shy that he politely declined.

I believe the honor was not followed through because of his absence.

Thought the TeeFury shirt of the day (http://www.teefury.com/) would be worth the ancient bump:
