Title: LOTR's 'The One Ring' Inscription?
Post by: Angry Ewok on December 15, 2005, 04:15 PM
This has been bugging me for a long time... In Lord of the Rings, what language is the inscription on 'The One Ring'? Black Speech or Elvish?

What does it say when translated to English? Is it:

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the Darkness bind them."

Frodo: “Wait... there are markings. It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it.”

Gandalf: “There are few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.”

Frodo: “Mordor?!”

Gandalf: “In the common tongue, it says 'One Ring to Rule them all, One Ring to find them. One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them. “

Or something to that effect...  ;)

I'm pretty sure it is in Dark Speech, the language of Mordor. It is a dialect of elvish I believe...

As for the translation I think that is right, but I don't know for sure.

No, no, no.  Sigh.  I have to educate you people yet again.  It says "Fear leads to Anger.  Anger leads to hate.  Hate leads to SUFFERING!"

Yup, it's the language of Mordor and Ryan's right that it's sorta related to Elvish...  Mordor's language is, like all the evil, kind of a bastardization of Elvish...  Much like Orcs are twisted Elves in a way and such.

And of course there's a lot more to the "poem" than the ring's inscription too...  I can't remember it all but that is the proper inscription translation I'm pretty sure.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I thought the ring said "Into each generation, a Slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, a Chosen One. One born with the strength and skill to hunt vampires and to stop their spread of evil." hmm then again it could have been the scythe....

Man, I miss the movies. Might be time to re-read the books yet again (its an annual thing).
