Title: Wizard World - Chicago
Post by: dustrho on May 8, 2003, 11:04 AM
(http://www.wizarduniverse.com/_gfx_/banners/468_60_WizConChi.gif)

Hey, I think I want to go to this thing, but what exactly is going to be there?  I'm at their website (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/conventions/chicago.cfm) right now, and it doesn't mention anything about Star Wars.  Has anyone ever gone to this show before?  If they have a bunch of Star Wars stuff, and especially those blue Clone Trooper busts then I'm going.  I've just never gone to anything like this before.

LMK... thanks!!!

According to the Official Site, the exclusive Clonetrooper bust should definitely be there, but in very limited quantities (I think only 1,000), so just showing up will definitely not guarantee you getting one.  Thing Jorg Sacul distribution at C2, but 30 times as hard.

I'm sure Hasbro will be at the show though - and might even have a new figure or two in tow, and there's likely to be lots of other Star Wars loot all over the place - dealers galore!  I'm sure you'd have a great time, assuming it doesn't cost ya' an arm and a leg to get in!  It's pretty much similar to the San Diego Comic Con, if you've heard anything about that...

I would assume at some point they would announce a few Star Wars celebrities to sign autographs.  At least that's what they have done the past several years.

Hasbro will be showing off some goodies at this show and the San Diego Comic-Con.  So, it's certainly worth going just to see some of this stuff.

It's $20 for one day and $40 for three days... kinda pricey if you ask me.  I'll have to think about this one.

I've always heard this and Comic Con were a blast, maybe when Max gets a little older we'll make a trip to the Windy City for Wizard World

A friend of mine has gone to this show religiously for the past several years.  Both of us went to the Wizard World Show in Philadelphia, which was a substantial show.  He informed me that the show in Chicago was easily double the size of the Philly show, if not bigger.

I have been for the last two years. Lots of cool things to see from games, comics, toys, celebs, ect. It is just a place to dress up (if you wish) and to have fun. Not as cool as DragonCon but worth the money if you just want to see some cool things and some really outragious costumes that some people wear. Usually Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, Dave Prowse, and Phil Brown attend the Chicago show. Last year a few more showed up that were in E2.
I plan on attending if I am not across the country for a new job. I just want to go so I can get the Clone Bust. I am a completest and I have to have them all. :) or I will go crazy.

If I can go I will drive up there for the first day spend a few hours to look around and drive back to Indy. Maybe if anyone is going we can meet for lunch or something.

I want to go just ot get my Clone Bust!!!  ;D

Ain't that the truth...   8)  That's why I haven't skipped a single figure carded or loose in the almost 8 years of modern collecting!  Too afraid of losing my sanity!   :P

Ad I saw in Toyfare today mentions Hasbro and Star Wars as being at the Chicago show.  Stikfas, GI Joe and something I can't remember.

This sort of stuff doesn't happen in Canada :(

Count Phil Brown out.  He did his lat show shortly after Celebration 2.  He's now in a nursing home, as his wife is unable to take care of him anymore.

Poor Phil. He is such a nice guy.

OK. I have heard some news but I cannot confirm it yet. I have heard that at Wizard World Hasbro is going to be showing the entire 2003 Clone Wars line of toys (Vehicles and Figures) and a few new figures from the Saga Line. Also, I heard a preview of the Clone Wars Cartoon!!!

I know that Hasbro always has a nice display at Wizards World but they usually show what is already out there and what is to come in like the next month. But not this year if the rumor is true that the Clone Wars Line is going to have a major showing at Wizards World.

If they are going to show the Clone Wars line, I hope they show more of the figures that were not at ToyFair, ect. I really want to see how the Sith Witch and others are coming along.

Well, I plan to be there for one day at least. Hopefully Friday so I can get my Clone Bust.

Post by: whojedi on July 18, 2003, 12:23 PM
I believe they are contracted through C2 Ventures and they should be there all three days.  Normally, they charge $20 per autograph, which includes the picture if the is what you want them to sign.  Their new widescreen pictures are sweet.

If you want them to just sign an item for you, I think it is still $20.

Hope this helps!
Title: Re: Wizard World in Chicago
Post by: Boba Binks on July 18, 2003, 04:04 PM
I will be there on Friday and Saturday.

As for autos WhoJedi is correct C2 Ventures is the booking agent for them.
The price is $20.00 for a photo and signature.
If you bring your own item sometimes it is $10.00 for the auto but most of them will still charge $20.00.

I have a list of things to be picked up at Wizards. If anyone needs anything let me know. So far I am gong to be picking things up for eight people.

Lets just hope the fiasco in Cali is not repeated in Chicago with the Blue Clone Bust.

What happened?  I am planning on going Saturday with my son (he's interested in the computer drawing class).  So...since I never have been to anything like this before...what should I expect?  I'd like to get Sean Astin and Leeanna Walsman's autograph.  I will have to pick up my ticket when I get there.  Any pointers on any of this would be aprreciated.

(I would also like to get a Silver Fett and the Statler/Waldorf set, again...how do I go about doing this).

thanks!!

You can expect lots and lots of people crammed together for one.  After awhile you get used to it.  Lots of booth type setups from the vendors.  They will give you brochures or free stuff.  You will do a lot of looking around trying to find where the Star Wars celebrities or whatever you are trying to find is located.  You will eventually.  There should be people selling toys and comics or customizable cards and anything else related.  Probably several folks will dress up in costume of whatever.

All in all it's usually a good time.  It has bad food and everything!

Title: Re: Wizard World in Chicago
Post by: JediMAC on August 5, 2003, 03:09 PM
Pure, unadulterated fanboy (and girl  ;)) madness!   8)

It'll be crowded and hectic, but it's just a great feeling to be surrounded by so many other who have a similar hobby to yours, and the energy level is cool too!  Tons of stuff to see, do, and buy, so come prepared!  Bring some cash just in case all the credit card and ATM machines go down at once like they did at the San Diego Comic Con...   ::)

The Silver Fett line at Paizo's booth will likely be pretty long - at least an hour, probably more.  It tails off during the day though, so check in with their booth early on and again in the middle of the day just to make sure their stock is fine, and then stop on by near the end of the afternoon to pick up your loot.  They didn't sell out at all on any days at the Comic Con or recent Gen Con in Indy, so you should be fine Beth.  Just don't waste your entire day in that line.  It was a solid 3 hours most of the day at Comic Con that I was there, but we stopped by with a couple hours left in the day, and the line was down to a "measely" 45 minutes.  And if you're into the MOMC thing, feel free to ask them to look through several Fetts 'til you can find a nice one that suits your liking.  They don't mind!

The Blue Clone Bust (at the Gentle Giants/Dark Horse booth) is an entirely different story though.  That's going to be an extremely tough piece to snag there, as there will only be between 100 and 500 available for the entire show.  If you want one of those, you MUST be the first in the door and make a b-line for their booth, or you'll miss out on it.  The "fiasco" with these at the Comic Con, was that they might've overshot their convention allocation of 500, possibly by as many as 400 based on some rumors, which would only leave 100 of the total 1,000 left for Chicago.  They also gave out 2 a piece (rather than just one) to any exhibitors or 4 day pass holders on preview night at Comic Con, which was a BIG mistake.

As for your Muppets exclusives (at the Palisades booth), I think you should be in pretty good shape with those, since at Comic Con I stopped by the Palisades booth almost at the very end of the day on Friday, and they still had PLENTY of the Animal and Swedish Chef exclusive figures left.  No lines, no hassle - piece of cake.  Not sure if the two old farts will be in greater demand at the Chicago show though...

There'll be lots of other little radom vendor booths set up everywhere where you can find and buy many a HTF SW collectible, and maybe even get a good deal or two.  Lots of fun, amazing and wild costumes of course - so bring your camera!  I assume you'll be in costume as well, right?!  You'll want to stop by Hasbro's booth as well, to check out the upcoming figures that they'll have on display there!   8)

If you don't have a ticket yet though, I'd recommend getting there pretty early - like an hour or so before opening so you can figure out where to do that, and likely jump in the line that will already have formed for on site ticket purchasing.  Hopefully they'll give you (or you can find) a map of the convention floor which details where all the various exhibitor and vendor booths will be located so you can find your way around.  If not, guess you'll just have to go aisle by aisle to see what you can find.

Not sure about the autographs though, since I've never gone after those.  I'd imagine Sean Astin won't be there for too long, and will have a pretty long line, as will Leeanna Walsman since I think this is the first signing that she's ever done.  So hopefully you can track down an autograph schedule with the hours and locations for each star, which should be included in a program you should receive when you buy your ticket.

Good luck with everything Beth, and enjoy your day there!  I'll expect a full report upon your return...   ;)

Thanks Matt for all the info.  ;)

I would like the gentle giant bust but I doubt if I'd find it in time.  I have to pick up our tickets at the "will call" booth first.  I'll probably do the autograph line for C2 Ventures on Friday and get it over with so Saturday we can just walk around.  Jeff wants the Batman figure too so I'll make sure to bring cash 'back-up'.   I'm actually thinking of doing the breakfast thing (as that is our hotel anyways) but I'm not sure if it's full yet or not. That will get me the Boba Fett (well, two since Jeff will be there).  Did anyone go to the breakfasts at Comic-Con or Gen-Con?  Was it a buffet breakfast ?  ( I'm not going to eat but my son will be!!)

Chris, I'll be in my Mara Jade costume with purple cape and walking around with a tall teenage boy with some type of Static X, Staind, Mudvayne etc...shirt on.  He'll be the one carrying the loot  :)  If I see you, I'll make sure to stop ya!

It looks like I will only be able to make it on Friday only now.  >:(

The breakfast at Origins was a buffet with eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, pastries, and more.

The breakfast at GenCon Indy was an egg omlet type dish, I think. I really do not remember what it was. No choice you got what you got.

Something came up where I can't attend. #*@#(%(#@)#(  >:(
So I will be missing all the fun of seeing people dressed up, seeing the Hasbro area, getting some autographs that I wanted, maybe missing out on the Blue Clone Bust and more.

*I already talked with Philip Wise (RebelScum / C2 Ventures) and he will be hooking me up with some autographs through the store at TFN. The Autos will not be on my custom made collages that I make but at least I will be getting the autos I want.

*I also know two people who are going for the Anime stuff. They are both going to try to acquire the Blue Clone Bust for me. I hope they get them. They will be there the whole weekend. I think they probably already left today since they have a room at one of the hotels.

I was looking forward to this trip.  >:(

Oh no it is nothing personal.
I just do not have the funds right now to get up there. This week it seems that I got most of my bills which usually come at the middle of the week and I need to pay them off. You know priority before luxury.

Plus I was going to be going up with a freind who now has backed out just this morning.

I could still go if I left about 3am tonight then head straight home after doing a few things there. But that is just too much of a strain for me to do. It takes between 5 - 6 hours of driving from Indy to Chicago. I am bummed about not attending. Next year I will be there for sure. I have attended Wizards for the past two years. I hope to make it a yearly trip.

I met Dustrho too last year.  I have a lot of fun but am unable to go this year.  It's too bad Hasbro isn't going as the display they had last year of the Battle of Geonosis was awesome and the main reason I made a similar display myself.

I will definitely be there Friday and Saturday, and I'm thinking about not going on Sunday.  I still can't believe Hasbro won't be there.  What a joke!  It should still be a lot of fun though, even if they're not going to be there.  Hopefully I'll be able to land some deals with the dealers there like I did last year... I was able to pick up about 10 POTJ Imperial Commanders for $1 each.   :o

Only one more day to go and Wizard World will be upon us.  See you there!   ;D

I just saw some news about Ray Park and Daniel Logan being at the Chicago Wizards World show.  I've never attended one of those.  Anyone have any experience?  Is their a decent vendor area with (decent) prices on SW stuff.  Keep in mind, I'd mostly be looking for older figures/toys for custom purposes.

Anyone have experience with Wizards World??

I've been to this show for the past three years.  It's definitely one of the better conventions in the country.  I would say it's easily the second best.  However, having been to Comic Con in San Diego last week, there's a big dropoff from number 1 to number 2.

There's definitely a good number of dealers here.  You can pick up just about anything here.  Are you going to score current things at retail prices?  Probably not.  But as far as older items go, you'll probably wind up paying fair market prices.  The key though is to be a smart shopper.  Know what things should cost and haggle for the best deal you can.  It's pretty much a microcosm of dealers.  Some are going to have good prices, and others won't.

As for exhibitors?  Hasbro did not attend this show last year, and it seems that they're only doing Comic Con now.  But you can find some Star Wars licensees like Gentle Giant, Official Pix and Dark Horse at this show.

As for the promoters?  They do a decent enough job.  But the cattle pens that they herd you into each morning in order to get on the floor at opening are borderline degrading.  Not sure what the ticket price is this year.  Typically I've attended all 3 or 4 days.  But I'm not attending this year.  It's a long drive for me and there's not much incentive for me to go.  I did attend the Wizard show in Boston last fall.  That one was a disaster!  Poor turnout, poor facilities, and not enough vendors.  I also attend their Philly show annually.  That has actually turned into one of the best shows on the East Coast.  I don't know enough to say about either their Texas or Los Angeles shows.  Overall I think Wizard is putting together some good shows, so if you're inclined you might want to check out the Chicago show.

They cancelled the Boston show because of the bad turnout.  I don't know why it did so badly, never looked it up.  They always have recaps of the shows on their web site but I don't think they even did that for Boston and it seems to have been completely wiped off their site now.

I PM'ed you info about Philly but I agree with Nicklab that that show has gotten better as it's gone along.  Last year seemed to be the exception from a toy standpoint but this year was one of the best for shopping IMO.

I recommend going to the Chicago show, I'm sure you'll have a good time.

Ughhh, the Boston show.  You would think that a show in one of the coolest cities in New England would be a great location for a show, right?  Not really.

The hall was small compared with the other Wizard World events I've been to, for starters.  That was the first point of suspicion.

The dealer/exhibitor turnout?  Not great.  I've seen better turnouts at Big Apple Con's shows, and those guys have a decent, medium sized promotion that's doing a show every 3 - 4 months.  I get the feeling that the table costs were pretty high, especially after I heard what Wizard World was charging for tables at their Chicago show.  My guess is that cost scared off a number of dealers.

Then there was the fan turnout.  It was reasonable for a show this size, but not really at capacity for the hall.  You weren't jammed up trying to navigate the show.  It seems that the fanbase that Wizard World THOUGHT might be in the Boston / New England area just didn't turn out.  One thing that may have been a turnoff was that there weren't a good number of hotel rooms available in the immediate area.  And after checking out the hotel situation in Boston generally, it seems that hotels in the city are QUITE expensive.  I'm guessing here, but I think that may have deterred a number of the hardcore con fans who make roadtrips to shows like this on a regular basis.  It certainly wasn't necessary to go back to this show for a second day.  You could successfully scour this show in an afternoon and be done.

I've gone in previous years but I don't think I'll be there this year.  Have fun!

I attended this show for about 3 years in a row.  Having Hasbro as an exhibitor was a bigtime draw for me.  But since Hasbro pulled out, as have several other Star Wars licensees, I decided to stop going.

Still, this is a great show for toys and comics.  And Chicago is a very cool city.  But it's not cool enough for me to drive 700+ miles.

We actually have met before in person, he is a really nice guy. Thanks for the heads up, I was just checking. This years show is now missing Mattel since they bumped it up 2 months, not a good move they should have pushed the show back to Sept.

I just wanted to see.

I'm a nice guy? Uh oh my reputation is getting soft  :D

Hahah, I don't think I'll be making it to Wizard World - I've gotta work the majority of the weekend. Hopefully that isn't the case, but not likely. :(

JOT: I know a bunch of the guys from the Chicago Trade Federation are going, you might see a few of them there. Head on over to the site - http://www.ctfed.org - they're a good bunch of guys. BTW have you been to Quake at all lately? I've been meaning to head on by and see what Dave's got, but haven't had time. Any new or interesting stuff there?

I hate the whole emo thing, so I retract my comments about you. From what it sounds and looks like, this years WW might be the weakest it's been in years. The date change to June is an oddball time to have it. It's too early in the summer so there is no big news to share, they lost a lot of Exhibitors so you may not be missing much. I will check out the site you sent me and see what's up. I will only be going on Friday, LMK if anything changes for you.

I have not been you Quake in eons, I have not had a reason to go as I am caught up on all past stuff. I should stop in to take a peek, summer was always a good time as people dump a lot of stuff there to pay for vacations. You might be able to find some good stuff.(The SW bargain bin was always were the best treasures were found.)

JOT, have you been to the show yet? Was there anything of note worth checking out? Looks like I'll be at the show sometime late this afternoon as a buddy of mine is able to get me into the show. I'll be running around in my bright green "Got FFURG" shirt so if you see me stop and say hi. Cheers!

Well I did wind up going to Wizard World for a while on Saturday and had a good time, though had I not gotten in for free I might have expected more. I was actually surprised to see that the comic publishers - Marvel, DC, Dark Horse - had small footprints at the show while Intel and Diamond Select had sizable exhibits, actually Intel's was humongous. Considering this use to be the Chicago Comic-Con, one would expect a bigger impression by the comic industry.

I met a few of the wrestlers that were signing autographs - Mick Foley, Al Snow, Terri Runnels, and Dawn Marie. Fun times as always there, everyone was personable and of course the ladies we're mighty fine. Same goes for most of the cosplay chicks running around, well almost all of them, hah!

I also checked out the Sansweet presentation which piqued my interest for Force Unleashed and got me more excited for Clone Wars. Sansweet mentioned that no decision regarding Celebration V has been made despite the numerous suggestions to have CV at the same location as WW. :) He did mention serious discussions would take place in the Fall after CW hit and Celebration Japan was over with. Part of the hold up may be due to the fact that they're looking at options for a new licensor to handle the event (as is to be expected after the CIV situation) and based on other comments you could kinda get a good idea as to who the new licensor could possibly be (think Fan Club breakfasts and the like).

The best part of the show though was walking out with a loose and complete vintage AT-AT Walker in pretty good condition with ESB box for a nice little price. Also scored a couple of upgrades for vintage figures and of course the free swag - issues of ToyFare and Wizard.

All in all a good time, not sure if worth the $25 entry, but still fun nonetheless.
