Title: Aayla Secura finished
Post by: Phrubruh on March 5, 2006, 04:54 PM
No not the actress but the Microlady version! ;D  After the success of the Microlady Slave Girl Leia, I've decided to follow it up with a Microlady version of Aayla Secura. As you can see I've added the head. Now I need to mix some paint to make the body match the head. Any suggestions on color or paint combinations for this?

Scared me there, Phrubes.  After making your Moroni figure, I thought you were going down the dark path.

While I think the microman figures are a little too bulky and over-jointed for scantily-clad SW figures, you did a great job with the Leia.  What are your plans for her clothing/accessories?  Painting them on?  Soft goods?  Sculpting, or kit-bashing?

I'm planning on dremeling the top and gluing it on. Then I'll paint the pants and boots. Of course softgoods could be really cool for the shirt too. We'll see. I've just got to get the skin color to match.

Cool Phruby, I'm glad to see you continuing with the Microman figures!  Aayla definitely lends herself nicely to micromanification (or would it be microwomanification?)  :P
For her paint color, off the top of my head, I would use Ultramarine Blue mixed with a bit of Blood Red (just a tiny drop) and maybe a little Shadow Grey (all of these are Games Workshop brand paints, I can't remember if you use GW paints or not though).

I would recommend painting her top direclty onto the body, since her shirt was pretty tight in the film, I think that dremelling out the figure's chest piece would not work very well.
I can't wait to see how she comes out!  ;D

So you suggest to paint the whole thing and just add the little tassle/pouch thing to her weist? How about using a very thin layer of sculpty for the shirt in order to give it some texture?

Well, I'll say that the title caught my eyes....

I think you should try for some form fitting softgoods on the top.  Maybe difficult to pull off (no pun intended).  I've found that a little bit of well placed superglue will hold soft goods in position.  Otherwise I think your idea of sculpy might also work.  I'd be worried that a very thin area would be difficult to sand down/smooth off (something I always have to do with sculpy).  I'm not sure dremeling out her top would work as I'm not sure her, eh-hum, proportions are the same between the two figures.

On minor comment.  The way her hands are positioned, it looks like her lower right hand is bent at a very odd angle.

It was just a quick pose. I can put her in better 'positions' in future work in progress pictures. I'll have to look thru my wife's cloth pile for a piece that will work.

Im going to be watching this one very closely. I have no doubt in my mind that this one will be as good or if not better than the Leia. If I can get one of those bodies I want to do one of these myself. Cant wait to see his one finished.

As far as the paintimng goes maybe you could try a light grey wash, that should darken the ciolor up and match the head.

You should definately get one of these bodys. I get mine from seller zira28 on ebay. Here price is the best I've come across. She charges $6.99 on a buy it now with $7 shipping from Japan. The figure gets to my mail box with 3-4 days and is packed extreemly well. She has discounts on multiple winnings. She has all the different body colors and chest sizes.

Gregorbian and I are addicted to these things. They are definately worth taking a shot at.

Actually Ive bought stuff from her before back when I was still collecting Untraman and stuff. She seems to have lowered her prices on these. They were about 12.00 a peice before shipping. I may have to look her up again. Thanks for the heads up. Now that I think about it, my snowbunny Padme would have looked a hell of a lot better with one of the white bodies.

That actually is a great idea. You should do a snowbunny Padme using the Microlady body. A cloth cape would be a definate must for that kind of project.

A thin layer of sculpey would probably work for texture.  Somebody on the RS.com boards said that you can cure sculpey on figures in the microwave (microwave in a mug of water for 3 minutes).  I tried this method on my Microman Master Chief and it worked fine.  I think that would look better than using the dremeled out hasbro torso.

Gregorbian and I are addicted to these things. They are definately worth taking a shot at.

Ain't that the truth!  ;)

That's the technique I use now for curing sculpty. I microwave a cup of water for three minutes and then put the figure in the boiling water for at least five minutes. It works great and I never have a melted mess.

If I can't find some brown cloth or leather, I'll sculpt it. Cloth would work better over the jointed arm.

I cure my sculpy in boiling water on the stove - 3 minutes for thin pieces attached to figures.  No permenant damage yet.

As far as leather goes. I've picked up some vinyl table cloth material at Joanne Fabrics.  It looks like it would work pretty well for faux leather.  It may be bit too stiff for this custom though.

I think this will look great once she's done and can you get these micro figures in male form.

And M_P can you get a closer look at the head shot or send me a few pics of teh head to hemble@zip.com.au and I'll see what colours would be a good match.

this is going to be really interesting Phurby. i still am not quite sure if i totally like the microman/woman bodies yet...the articulation is incredible, they still look a little strange to me the way the joints are "exposed".

i would definitely use a little sculpy & if you could get your hands on some scrap leather it would work really well for her pouch & tassel thingys. i've got a whole big bag of scrap leather, the real stuff no vinyl crapola...PM me & i can send some scraps to you if you want some for this project.

I think I'd try a GW's Enchanted Blue base, mixed with GW's Skull White to match the lightness.

They used to  have a light blue paint, Lightning Blue or somesuch, that might have been an even better match, but the Enchanted Blue should work better than GW's Ultramarine Blue, in my opinion.

I think the "new" GW light blue is called "Ice Blue" nowadays.  I'm not sure if it's a new color or not, but I don't remember it from back in my WH40k days.

I must say Phruby, forget the soft goods and such. Just find the matching shade of blue paint and you're all set. ;D
Title: Re: Aayla Secura naked! - wip
Post by: Phrubruh on March 12, 2006, 05:13 PM
I mixed up a shade of bluish gray that I think is really close to the head color. Now show looks topless while wearing light blue pants. This is only a first cote so it needs some touch ups but all the joints are painted and the color doesn't scratch off. I have some army camoflague fabric to use for the shirt.

Very good painting so far.  The color seems to match to the head perfectly.  You may want to repaint her face with that color to ensure the match  (but it's not necessary).

Phurby, I think you're an amazing customizer, but I don't care for this microlady body customs.  They are so overly articulated that they just don't look "real" to me - way too many seams showing.

Still, I wish you luck.

Think of Microman customs as a kind of style. Kind of like making star wars figures out of Stikfas or Kubrick. They are not made for realism, just for ultimate actuation. However, I think you would love the jedi that I'm working on next. He will have all of his joints covered in softgoods.

Mate the colour on the body looks great I would give the head a wash of the same colour as it looks a tade lighter other then that it's coming along great.

To the dismay of a lot of the fan boys out there, Ms. Secura is now wearing a shirt. I pieced it together from some Kaki fabric and glued it in place. I'm working on the right sleeve now. Here is a picture of my workspace and the state that she is in now.

Thanks hemble. I put the cloth on the right arm also last night. I think it looks too thick like she is wearing a jacket arm. I'll take a picture tonight and probably remove it and just paint the arm. He paints are painted on now also. She needs shoes and her belt. The belt will be some leather strips from darth_ripley.

Phruby -

I wonder if you could paint through some gauze, then lift the gauze off while the paint is still wet, to give a stencil effect that would have some depth? That way the sleeve would be *very* fitted?

This is coming along beautifully. Sorry I haven't commented to that effect before.

She's looking good.  I think adding some clothing helps these micro(wo)man customs.   I think Rem's idea on guaze may be a good one.

Can you share your paint recipe for Aayla?  As a colorblind customizer, specific details are helpful for me :) :) :)  Thanks!

Post by: Phrubruh on March 16, 2006, 10:25 AM
That's a good idea to use the gauze. I'm going to have to try that. The mix of colors I used for the skin was a base of flat white. Then added drops of light blue and grey until I could get a color that matched the head. Its pretty random. I'll probably never get that exact shade of color again. I'll get the exact color names to you tonight.

Now that it's <almost> too late to suggest stuff...why not use a latex balloon for the sleeve/shirt? I would imagine the paint you used wouldn't harm it too much, then again i've never worked with latex and paint. I saw on a 1/6th forum someone used a balloon for a tube top or something...tho your mileage may vary. Otherwise an awesome job man :)

A balloon huh? That's an interesting idea. I'm going to have to try that on my next jedi.

Anyway, Brent asked what color mix I used for that color. I use Tamiya Sky Blue, Flat White and Neutral Grey. It's probably 70% white, 15% blue, 15% grey. Not sure since I added color constrantly as I mixed and compared to the head.

I'll have a picture with the gauze idea later.

Here it is with the gauze. It definately has texture but I think too much blue is showing thru. That is basically an olive green with a dry brush of black. I think I need to dry brush olive green again. The shoes also need to be painted and the belt needs to be fashioned.

That didn't come out too bad, though!

Maybe if you do a basecoat of black and then gauze over the olive green?

It has some mass to it (from the look of the pic anyway)...

Is she getting a softgoods skirt of any kind? The pelvis on the micro lady always strikes me as... well... odd :)

This is coming along beautifully.

I think the flash shows off glare that seems to make the paint look strange. If you look at it under normal light it looks really good. I'll touch it up towards the end.

She is getting a softgoods skirt. Darth_Ripley sent me a huge amount of leather for this project. I'm planning on putting that on tonight and painting the boots.

Painting a microman figure really works well. It takes paint typically in one cote and doesn't peal off at the joints like hasbro plastic does.  I've posed my slave girl leia in lots of poses and the paint doesn't come off at the joints. The nice thing about these figures is they are very easy to take apart and they go back together tightly.

I get my micromen from Zira28 on ebay. She sells them for a buy it now of $6.49 with $7.00 shipping for Japan. Great deal and she gets them here within 3-4 days. They come in lots of colors and chest sizes. I'd recomend the medium since large and xlarge are a little hard to work with.

Wow, these Microlady bodies are really incredible -- like a Cy Girl, only 3.75!  The Aayla head looks really great on this body -- perfect proportional fit -- great job getting the light blue paint colors to match, too.  That's definitely not easy.

I wonder if a cool, softgoodsy-yet-fitting sleeve for the left arm could be made with... gasp... some material from a cut-up pair of black or dark brown nylon stockings?  Just sew a sort of a thin tube and slip it on?  Just a thought.  Of course, I'm prejudiced, as you know...  :D

Looking forward to seeing what the leather skirt -- should be most snazzy.  Keep up the great work, as always, Phruby!

Wonderful job Phruby! I think this has to be my favorite custom of yours that I have seen. The blue color match on the body is dead on & the head really lends itself to this body. The leather worked out really well, glad I could help out. I sent extra for other Microman/lady or any other projects, leather is great to have around for soft goods :)

I dunno, but i'd LOVE to watch...just as long as Carrie Fisher doesn't try wearing the bikini now...<shudder>
Don't even go there buddy.

Hey, i can hope they decide to do an Aurra Sing/Aayla Secura Catfight at some point in one of the new TV series, can't I? I wouldn't complain if they used the original actresses either :D

She's finished. I've added the leather from Darth_Ripley to her belt. She is also wearing shoes but I don't think you can see the color change in these pictures.

That's what you could use the balloons for! I would imagine you'd have to get those long thin ones they use for balloon animals (or even a condom if the paint wouldn't adhere to the latex properly LOL) But i'm still not sure how well the paint would adhere to the latex. If i was able to get my hands on the 12 inch Aurra Sing, I'd just head swap her with Bariss Offee's Body. Paint the hands and the body white, and voila! Of course, I wanted to do the same thing to make her into Ventress, but at this point it's all theory.

I have a feeling the long thin baloons are too wide to work as a sleave. They should paint up ok though. I've never had trouble painted over latex. I like the idea of the nylon stocking but how do you sow something that narrow and small? Probably by hand. Findswoman would know.

Hi M_P she turned out great I'm really impressed with how well the paint matched up to her face as for the sleeve for the arm I was thinking some pleather would be a great idea.

1-cut it out to length
2-You can buy cloth glue which will adhere great to pleather
3-slip it over the arm and glue in place were you need it
4- and you will still be able to move the arm around even with the pleather on it.

I do like these micromen. They are very addicting. At least for the time being, I'm going to be making these guys.  I hope the supply doesn't dry up. After Scorch I want to do Aurra Sing and maybe Vader.

Good idea on the plether, hemble. I'll have to try that on a future microman.
