It really depends on what place I go to.

I love In-N-Out.  I get a double-double with grilled onions, lettuce, cheese, and thousand island.

Most of the time I'm just happy with cheese, ketchup, pickles, and onions.

Fresh, not-frozen beef that's marinated in teriyaki for at least a couple hours and subsequently grilled to perfection, whole wheat buns, colby jack cheese I buy at a meat locker, ketchup, mustard, and a bit of mayo. If I have it, I'll throw a leaf of lettuce on it so it feels like health food.

Lettuce
Tomatoes
Onions
Pickles

If I'm going to eat something as unhealthy for me as a burger, you better believe I'm gonna load it up with as much veggies as possible, to counteract all of the bad stuff.

First of all -- I can't stand plain hamburger meat.  I've got to add some onion soup mix, garlic, Bold A-1 and Worchester Sauce.

Cheese -- usually sharp cheddar, sometimes Colby or Jack
Onions
A really good bun or lightly toasted sourdough bread

well...a burger..hmm....well, I'm mostly "vegitaian" unless you count beef in beef stew and  the little pieces of chicken in chicken pie....so no burgers for me...IF I eat one ..I'd put :

Pickles
Mustard
Tomato
...just take away the meat

The bun is definitely important and can make or break a burger.  No wimpy wonder bread buns please.  It has to be large enough to hold every thing together and tough enough to last until the end, not wimp out and fall apart half way through eating.  Yet at the same time the bun must be soft so that it breaks down in your mouth with the rest of the burger and your not chewing bun forever.

My favourite topping is my mom's homemade dill pickles, so good.  Other sliced dills make a passable substitute most of the time when said favourite is not available.

Another favourite topping are relishes, not that fluorescent green stuff but all others made from such things as tomatoes, onions, dill pickles, hot peppers or, corn.   My girlfriend always freaks out about all the relish in the fridge but if your making burgers you got to do it right.

Everything else is pretty much welcome on my burger except maybe only the occasional tomato.

That said the main attraction, the beef patty has to be a substantial hunk of meat.  I once ate a burger that had a one pound beef patty- now that was awesome.

I avoid ketchup like the plague on burgers, hot dogs, or anything other than fries.

If I'm feeling like a regular old burger I like:

Lettuce
Onions (Love them grilled)
Mayo
Mustard
Gates BBQ sauce
Cheese (Sharp Cheddar or Pepper Jack)
Jalapenos
Bacon
I aslo like to likely butter a bun and then toast it so it is golden under the broiler.

If I'm feeling like something a little different I LOVE this combo too:

A-1 Steak Sauce
Grilled or Sauted Onions
Peppered Bacon
Frenches Fried onions (Green Bean Casserole Style)
Bleu Cheese crumbles with a dab af BC dressing to hold it together
And the same kind of bun as above

******* Dee-lish. :)

I take burgers seriously, with my new line of work. :-*

Here's what Kevvo likes:

9 ounce hamburger stuffed with blue cheese crumbles, medium rare topped with:

Black Olives
Fried minced onions
Spinach leaves
Romaine lettuce
Tomato
Bacon
Smoked Gouda cheese
Swiss cheese
pickles

Mmmm...Sometimes I top it with ranch dressing, but not usualy.

And for god sakes, put it on a potato roll.

Hmmmm. I'm pretty boring when it comes to hamburgers.

2 quarter pounders with 2 slices of american chesse in between and on top. (4 in all)
ketchup
a little bit of mayo,
and maybe some onions especially if its white castles out east
And the meat must be medium rare, no more (maybe less..... unless its fast food you take it how you get it), or I wont eat it.

Sometimes instead of plain old mayo I like to use a peppercorn mayo instead.

I take some mayo and mix in some green peppercorns an some mashed garlic, it is quite tasty.

You Yanks like pushing for another White Castle debacle don't you?  I completely understand when someone wants steak done that way, but hamburger ain't all that clean coming out of the grinding process.   :-X

Cheese
Tomatoes
Good leaf Lettuce/Spinach
Miracle Whip (NOT mayo)
Sometimes an avacado

I had a burger at a restaraunt once that had peanut butter on it.  It wasn't too bad--but you've got to like peanut butter.

Saturday night is Burger Night at our home.  Its been a ritual for 12 years.

Fresh Ground Beef only
On the grill only

1 lb for me and 1/2 for the wife (cooked Medium Well).  Cant be any leaner than 80% either or it just falls apart in the grill.

Weekly I will change up the following toppings:

Land-O-Lakes American Cheese
Hoffmans Sharp Cheddar
Imported Swiss
Raw or Grilled Onions
Lettuce
Tomato
Pickels
Bacon
Ketchup (Heinz only)
Mustard (Grey Poupon or Emril's Kicked-Up)
Mayo
Fresh Onion, Sesame or Sourdough rolls

A heart attack waiting to happen :P
