Title: Monthly Customizing Challenge #14: Imperials and Slaves!
Post by: CHEWIE on May 30, 2006, 11:03 AM
A new month starts on Thursday... what does everyone want to make this month?

Smarty had an idea, Hip Hop (which I think he was joking) - but actually the more I think about it, some sort of pimps (Lando style) might make for a fun month.

Thoughts on that idea?  Or any other ideas?

 :)

Nah, I was Serious ;D Heck yes this will be funny, good thing about this is I won't try and make it SA like I do for all my figs that are military or merc. :P

Well, if we do go with this, I don't think I could do it. I just don't have the fodder available.

I've been seeing alot of votc Landos mixed in with the new vtsc sets. Besides, pimp lando you could make Ho Leia. Mace Windu would make a great Shaft. Luke could be Marky Mark. :o

Personally, I would rather see the Yuuzhan Vong made.

Well, whatever everyone wants to do is fine with me.  As long as we decide by Monday June 5, I would think that's enough time?

So far the choices are -

(1) Pimp style figure
(2) Yuuzhan  Vong

Any other ideas?

Jedi and Sith from 1000's of years ago  :)

That could be fun too. Kind of like Tales of the Jedi.
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge
Post by: RollaJedi on May 31, 2006, 01:24 PM
Or just about anybody from that period I guess, but yes, tales of the jedi era.  They had really primitive lightsabers that were attached to cords and power packs too in some cases.  I'd be up for that one if I could find the time!  I still have an unfinished 'Gladiator' from 2 months ago I got to work on
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge
Post by: Roton7 on May 31, 2006, 02:29 PM
Making the Vong would definitely be difficult. Pimp style would be sort of difficult, but worth it. 8)

How about pimp Vong?  :P

or of course you could pimp the quel droma brothers

i really like the 1000 years ago idea!!!

Instead of just "pimp" style, how about any "terrestrial" SW hybrid?  Any SW character in some kind of earth-bound outfit from any time period...?

Hmm so like the Jedi as Medevil Knights? or a clone as a WW 2 officer or somesuch.

The possibilities are endless!

How about a Star Wars-style super hero? Image a comic book hero that fights crime in the underworld streets of Coruscant.

Post by: Darth_Ennis on May 31, 2006, 05:08 PM
I'm all for the Vong, but I always am. ;D Pimp style sounds cool.

BUt my idea is sort of a Monster Mash type of thing in a similar vein to Quasars idea. Take SW and combine it with another 80's toy property. Kinda like Skeletor as a Yuzzan vong, or Snake eyes as a jedi. Something like that.

Wasn't straight-up Imperial Forces slated for an earlier month? I could go with the Human-SW crossovers, too.
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge
Post by: Quazar on May 31, 2006, 06:40 PM
Maybe this is too broad an umbrella (and I have no idea if any other ideas were already agreed upon), but would a generic "Elseworlds/Infinties/Universe Cross-Over" work?

And I don't mean Infinities within the SW universe.  So, for example, you could do Obi Wan as a knight of the round table, Tarkin as a German WWII officer, Boba Fett as Batman or Snake-Eyes as a Jedi and Storm Shadow as a Sith.

Thoughts?

Problem with OT animated, is that most of us do not collect animated, or use it for customs.

how about some sort of slave workers? they could be any spicies and be imperial slaves or hutt slaves or slaves of just about any type of war lord or slaves of a sith master, they could even be the yuzhonvong slaves with all the growths on them. just a thought.....
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge
Post by: CHEWIE on May 31, 2006, 08:36 PM
Actually the Slave Workers is one of the best ideas I've seen in a while for one of these... so many things would qualify for this... spice mine slaves, droid slaves, hutt dancer girl slaves, vong slaves, etc.

I think I'm going to have to go with Quazar for this Challenge. Maybe "Real Life Inspired SW Customs."

You would have so many different options that almost every customizer could do it without going out of their way for specific fodder.

In fact, if anyone hasn't guessed, my "Disaster on Coruscant" series of customs and upcoming PN is loosely based upon events taht occured in Mogadishu, Somalia in OCtober 1993.

Slaves are a great Idea. There is a very broad spectrum to work with. I think I like this idea better than my own.
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge

I'd vote for slaves!

I could certainly use slaves in my upcoming photonovel. I just finished Diva Shaliqua in my own thread so that would be a good entry (too bad its too early :) ).  Anyway, I'd love to take another crack at one.

The other ideas also sound like fun but I'd like to be able to stretch my customs time so that I can participate in the group project and work towards finishing the next segment of the Photonovel.

why dont you all just do a poll that ends at a certain date?

Is there a way to create a poll in the forums here?  I don't know if that feature is programmed in or not.

That's a good idea though, we could do that.  How about this, here are the choices for the June Customizing Challenge.  Deadline to vote is at midnight Sunday June 4 and you can only vote one time.

A) Hip Hop/Pimp Style
B) Yuuzhan Vong
C) Ancient Jedi/Sith
D) Star Wars-style super hero
E) Earth-Star Wars crossovers
F) OT Animated Figures
G) Slave Workers
H) Other ________________

That's a lot of choices, sorry if I missed any...

Hmmm...

I'll vote (G) Slave Workers as well.

It would give me a reason to finally do a couple of customs that I've been wanting to do for a long time:

i'm not sure if i'm going to have the time to participate in this group project or not. things have been unbelievably busy for me lately. i haven't touched any of my customs projects in months  :'(

G) Slaves sounds the most interesting of all to me

not only that i have the fodder to attempt a Kitster or Wald, or even a little child trandoshan slave  :)
Title: Re: June Customizing Challenge

We should do Ancient Jedi & Sith in July. :)

The problem with saying this now is invariably we never get the next month's right.  We still haven't done imperials  ;)  I'm not complaining just pointing out that next month this may loose steam.

NOw that I think about it BrentS is right I seem to remember something about doing Imperials a month or so ago. I don't really remember the specifics though, but I think we actually agreed on it at some point.

I seem to remember something about doing Imperials a month or so ago. I don't really remember the specifics though, but I think we actually agreed on it at some point.

We had a vote for month 13 from some left-over ideas - Imperials, Vong and Vehicles - with Vehicles being the winner for month 13.

The Vong idea made it into the poll again this time, but I think the Imperial idea lost steam because some people thought it was "too easy" or we'd get too many Clone entries.   :-\

I'm all for Slaves this time around (though Justin's pic makes me want to try a few more Imperials anyway  :P).

Hmm could this month be seperated into 2 catagories, a slave and 1 other thing, becuase right now I already have parts picked out and Assmbly begins today, I also am almost done with my speeder.
Also it looks like phruby is almost done too, and today's only the 2nd what will we do when everyone has their project done and we have half the month left. ???
I know the normal answer is do another, but how about we divide this into 2 sub months, to catch up since we took 2 months for the Dioramas.
Title: Re: Monthly Customizing Challenge #14: ???
Post by: The_Tin_Man on June 2, 2006, 12:37 PM
I agree with smartypants, we should do two subcatagories. I would vote Imperials for the 2nd catagory.  My slave is almost done and I'm workin on a second one and its only the second day :P. I also have the parts for a couple Imperials.

I'd be ok with it, Imperials are easy to do.

Might be cool to make it Imperial slaves - an Imperial with their slave...

Ok. Here are my entries for this month's Customizing Challange.

The first is Captain Lurch. He is made from some left over parts I had from other projects. The head was originally intended for the self portraite group project from last year.

The second one is a Slave Trader. I havn't come up with a name yet. She is made from POTC2 Elizabeth Swan body with a Baroness head and vintage Leia arms. I tried to stay with the puffy sleaves to match the pants. I guess she can also be a space pirate. I'll come up with a slave for her to trade soon. Maybe I'll give her a whip.

clicky the image for a bigger photo

Head/Helmet = PotF2 Death Star Trooper
Rest = PotJ Imperial Officer

I was painting/priming a bunch of other parts tonight for upcoming custom figures/projects and I had time to sneak this simple head-swap in as my first entry for the month.

Don't know if you can tell (it's most noticible on the torso), but I did a gray dry-brush/wash on him to try to pull some detail out of the jumpsuit.  I think it turned out well for a 20 minute project.  :)

The face really looks a lot better in person :P.  I also have an idea for a slave that I should have up in a couple days.  Also thanks for the warm welcom into the JD customizing community.

woah. :o

That's awesome work, CloneCommander1! Damn fine work on that face! Pretty cool concept over all too. But if I might make a sugestion or two? You might want to dremel the Veers' arm holes in a bit so that the ball-joint guard arms fit a bit better, and I might paint the shoulder armor, gloves,  & boots either black or white... but that's just my opinion  :P

Post by: PenDragon on June 4, 2006, 02:34 AM
No problem, man!

Oh, and here's my first entry, an easy to do Imperial that would look less recognizable with only a little work:

Head: Evo gray clone commander?
Gun: Jango Fett
Cane: Tion Medon
Everything Else: Veers

Back Story:
K, the way I figure it, I don't read the comics, I don't read the books. SO, if this has already been thought of, or if it flies in the face of what is 'possible,' so be it. It's just an exercise in creativity ;)

As the battle of Geonosis began to fade, a commando surveyed the arena's destruction. Out side of danger, he removed his helmet and looked upon the once-beautiful architecture with his own eyes. Something approaching joy filled his thoughts. A battle had been won. And it was good.

Now came the easy part, picking up the pieces. He would not stay for long. He knew he would be needed in another theater of this new war, and soon. But for now, he watched the bodies being moved for disposal or transport. He watched the Jedi recovering the remains of their brothers & sisters.

As he scaned the immediate area, a glint of the morning's soft orange light on polished metal captured his attention. Investigating, the commando unearthed one of Jango's fallen & discarded guns with his foot. Removing his gloves, he picked it up, moved it back & forth. He he felt it's weight in his hands, and let the rising sun reflect into his eyes again, and again.

New, unexpected thoughts wound their way into sections of the clone soldier's fortified barracks of a mind.  This had not been part of training. These feelings had not been part of his 2 yr existence, in which all that was supposed to be necessary for life had been flash-pumped into every molecule of his being. RC-421 looked out over the battle ground again. A battle had been won. And it was good. An enemy decapitated - in more than just the physical sense. And this too was good. But a father had been destroyed, made unsalvageable. And this was good? The answer was in his head without him having to think it. Yes, his father had been an enemy, that much had been made unavoidably clear. Free thought on this subject was at odds with the objective. But a young brother had been taken away...  No orders had been issued regarding this small one. And this, was this good?

Time Passes...

Somewhere along the line, certain clones of Jango Fett DID find the 'cure' for their short life spans. BUT, like all good paranoid dictators who overthrow democracy (because they think they know what's right for their wallets people) Palpitine ordered all the commander, ARC & commando clones destroyed soon after Order 66 was 'completed.' (Read your history - it's what happens.) Like the victims of the Jedi purge before them, some survived and went into hiding. There, in exile, some found ways to produce offspring. Tho' most of the children of the genetically despoiled clones died within the first few years of life, some were 'lucky' enough to live a full life of sorts, but with various genetic defects taking their toll. Their children, in turn, will find life difficult too, but easier than that of the past two generations. And they will be strong enough to avenge the destruction of their heritage.

This is one of the new breed of Mandalor. He takes his place in a seat of power in the new Empire; two generations removed from the time of the murderous betrayal of Palpatine. And though his forefathers had, at one time, comprised the entirety of the Grand Army of the Republic. No one knows his history. You see, history is writen by the winners. And there has been no winning side for almost a century. No one can place the appearance he has inherited from his now dead family. No one remembers the faces of his grandfathers.

Oooh, srry - that was a bit long - someone let me know if I need to keep it shorter... ;D

That's pretty cool, PD- it's the first custom I've really seen from you and it looks awesome. I love the cane, and the backstory was well-written and made sense.

Here's a WIP- he's almost done, but looking at the pics I gotta go back and change some things. He's a captain of an Imperial Slave Ship.

The reason my Wookie dosen't have an arm is because I got him like that from a ROTS toys lot off of eBay. The backstory though his he lost his arm on Kessel in the spice mines. I am trying to find a good new arm for him. Some kind of robotic arm. Any suggestions are welcome :)

Even if you can't find an arm, maybe sculpt a stump- not bloody, but just to conceal the peg.

I've been really enjoying seeing people's entries so far, and am looking forward to trying one  myself.  The Slaves and Imperials theme is a good one, because it's so versatile -- really encourages lots of creativity!  (Not that anyone here has trouble with that...)

For the time being, here's a few of my older customs on the slave theme:

I love the soft goods on that Aurra Sing, Finds - the pose is worthy of one of those 7" unleashed figs, and the red & metalic green look so very cool.  And shiny.... oooooo, da shiiiiiiny....  (http://www.fadzter.com/smilies/drool.gif)  er, srry- I totaly blame the allergy meds -'tis the season.

Um, anyway:
Finds - very cool stuff & wonderful use of details & soft goods as always!

Darth Nirvana - thanks for the compliments - I don't get a chance to be on the computer often these days, so I don't post too much. But you can check out the May Group Project for a couple more customs that I've done recently - or Curto's Custom Alliance under the name "Top Cat" for a few older ones. I'm diggin' your Imperial Slave Ship crew - especially the Captain. Your use of the soft goods & those legs / boots is just plain cool.

Outrider - I love your ROTE work - the entire line (from RS on) is truly masterful.

Master_Phruby - Captain Lurch is fantastic. I'm a big fan of the leg ;D And the paint on the face looks crisp & clean. Slave Trader Baroness looks pretty cool too - very nice use of the Swan body & the arms are a great fit!

Fritzkrieg - that guy rocks! Perfect parts, great concept! I can't wait to see what you do with the poor soul on the other end of that whip...

Jeff - simple, elegant, nice work with the dry brush too. 20 minutes well spent, IMO ;)

The_Tin_Man - again, nice,  simple, and works great - and I love the one-armed Wookie! I'dleave him as is, or add a bandaged stump ;D

This is a tip out of my own book so that Outrider didnt keep having to destroy his boys power rangers costume. ;)

Go to walmart and get those 1 dollar 3 ring binders that are just basically cardboard covered by a plastic vinyl. All you have to do is peel the vinyl right off. ;D

Head = PotJ Imperial Officer
Rest = PotF2 Tarkin

Yeah, it's just another simple parts swap!  ;)

I'm setting up a new Death Star Scene in my SW Room and I needed a real Officer for all my jump-suit PotJ Imp Officers.  Since all our "real" Imperial Officers (Tarkin, Piett, Veers, Jerjrrod, Ozzel) are wearing gray, I decided to whip up this guy to create a DS specific Officer.

One thing I'd like to fix is to change his rank badge a bit... but I'm not really an expert on those.  Suggestions?

I like him, Nirvana!  He looks sort of like Han Solo would if he had given his mercenary services to the Empire instead of the Rebellion.  (And there's that cloth bit again!  Very cool.)

I don't know if anyone mentioned it already & I just wasn't paying attention, but could someone remind me of the deadline for this project?  Or have we decided on one?  I ask because I am contemplating a 12" submission (which I hope is all right), but some of the parts I need won't be available until July.  I can come up with a 3.75" Plan B, if needs be.  Anyway, if anyone knows, do let me know, too.  Thanks much!

i like the use of parts too like the canteen, but the dirty faces is what i don't personally care for. its as if your wash gets out of control and the faces don't get cleaned up when you're done. it kind of hits me like paint overspray on a car, that sort of thing. this is nothing personal at all, i just feel the figures would look better if the faces were a bit cleaner.

things are so busy around here for me, there is no way i can make it for this project which is disappointing. i hope to be customizing again sometime in july after my birthday.

DN, as you know I'm a fan of your work.  I do agree that there is a bit too much weathering on the faces, it almost looks like they've been sprayed by mud or something... I just think they would want to wipe off their faces in real life.  Other than that small detail, they look great!

Ripley, I know you've been busy... hope things get back to normal for you soon!

That sounds like a good choice, and then maybe gray the hair slightly... the stern look on that one would work great for an Imperial, too.

Heh, no, it's ok. I wish they'd make a lower ranked Imperial body for heads like that. My inspiration for using that head was probably Pyro from the X-Men movies, with the "spiked" hair and all. I'll have to search for an Antilles head to, sounds like a good idea.

No name for him, sadly, Findswoman.

I'm hoping to have some "better" customs over the next week or so though. ;)

(Old pic...sorry for the Photoshop-ness of it)

Before the Clone Wars, Colonel Horla Picnaring was Vice-Admiral of the Tybuska sector fleet. Charged with defending the interests of his small, republican sector, Picnaring served with distinction for 12 years.

When the Great Clone Wars began, Picnaring was recruited by the Republic to command a small fleet of Dreadnaughts in the Unknown Regions to 'keep track' of any Confederate movements there.

After the war, Picnaring served as occupied Nemodia's Governor-General. His tenure as Governor-General was marked by a series of pro-nativist legislations, which served to draw the ire of many on Coruscant. Eventually, his resignation was forced by ISB Commissioner Daetri Perron, who accused the Governor-General of treason.

Picnaring was fortunate enough to have many friends in the military, who faught for, and eventually won, his release from imperial custody. After being released, Horla returned to Tybuska, where he would quietly live out the remainder of his life.

The Darktrooper looks good, I just don't like that old POTF2 Stormtrooper sculpt.  But the gun looks sweet!

Vator, that's a pretty cool Imperial.  I love the baton in his hand.

Daigobah, that's simple yet effective.  I can't wait for the Jerrod figure to come out too, I'm sure you're looking forward to that figure.

Outrider, that's a great Imperial, as always the accessories are the perfect touch.

Im in the process of finishing up my Imp and slave girl now. The slave is a very intricate undertaking as far as her out fit goes. I have no idea how I got the strange assemblege of parts that I chose to stick together but so far its working.

My imp officer is taking a little more time than I thought too. But I will have them dont by the deadline.

Well, heres my slave girl, as promised. Her outfit is VERY loosely based on a strippers outfit a freind of mine used to wear back home. The figures head kinda looks like her, so Ill just name her Vixen. That was her stage name. ;D
Of course when she finds out I made this she will kill me. :o

Lets see if I can remember the parts I used.

Head: AAy Vida
Torso: Slave Leia
Arms: Luminara ( Sculpied into sockets)
Legs: Ay Vida
Hair: Baroness ( and a few strands of thread.)
All the various straps and such are rubberbands, cut and glued.

Im still working on my Imp right now. He is in the process of drying. If I finish him tonight Ill post him.

Cool stuff guys!

Ennis - The Imperial looks pretty tough, very cool.  I like the darker color of his outfit.

Man, that looks like one D-I-R-T-Y woman... very cool though and clever.  The rubberband technique is a genius idea... she's very, very dirty.  Kinda like that in a woman, I must admit.

CloneCommander1 - That's pretty good.  I guess I'd try and use a different head so it doesn't look like Han.  But other than that I love this custom, really good use of parts and the cuts on his face look really good.

Here is my entry for this month -

MOFF TALYCIN and POLIS MASAN SLAVE

Parts Used

Moff Talycin
head - 21st century figure
robe - ROTS Bail Organa
body - SAGA2 General Veers

Slave
head/hands - ROTS Polis Masan
body - POTF2 Doda Bodonawieedo

Its been a long time since I worked on a custom figure.  With all the activity I've been spending on my diorama project that I haven't been working on figures.  However, I did break away to start up two WIPs for the Slaves portion of the MCC.

These will be Sebulba's Twi'lek Masseuses.

The one on the left is a blend of the Annika figure (um, obviously), Ayy Vida headpiece, POTF2 Slave Leia legs and some hands that I found in my fodder box.  The one on the right is just Ayy Vida but you can imagine that she'll be painted blue so I consider her a WIP.

I know that these two aren't exactly twins but I wanted to differentiate them to some extent.  Sure the bust on Annika is too large but it was the best other body I had available.

Incidently, I've had a problem getting the Ayy Vida figure to stand.  The leg seems a bit twisted.  Is this normal or has my figure deformed during storage??

I should have these finished up by the weekend deadline.  I've got a couple other customs for the MCC in mind but I will probably run out of time.

The Ayy Vida figure does seem to have trouble standing.  I had several at one time and ended up tearing them apart for customs.  Just be careful on the knee joints when painting.

 :)

Thanks for the comments Chewie...

I'm not going to have my Slaves or imperials all finished by tonight (the deadline).  However, I should get them finished by this (long woohoo) weekend.

I've got one more Slave WIP and 2-3 simple imperials planned.

Okay, I'm an hour and a half tardy.

SLAVE:

I finished up one of the masseuses.  I wanted to see how one turned out before I started painting both.  Overall, I'm pretty pleased.  I need to clean up the gown a little bit.  Obviously there are several things that don't make this movie accurate (no sleeves, no bare feet, silver armlets).

Recipe:

Face - Anika Sub5
Tendrils - Ayy Vida
Torso - Anika Sub5
Legs - POTF2 Slave Leia
Hands - random female hands in my fodder bin
Neckring - POTF2 Slave Leia (I think)

IMPERIALS

These are two guys I've planned on making for a while.  Relatively simple headswaps:

Captain Piett:

Recipe:
Head - POTF2 Piett (dremmeled to a ball socket)
Body - Saga2 Veers

Grand Moff Tarkin

Recipe:
Head:  POTF2 Tarkin (dremmeled to a ball socket)
Body: ROTS Tarkin

For both of these Imperials, the POTF heads are smaller than the ROTS/Saga version.  I had to dremel down the neck posts and repaint them as well.  Hopefully I got the paint color close enough.  However, as you know with me its always an adventure :)

Actually, the paint color is REALLY close. Nice customs, but I do have just a little criticism(sp?), the netting on the twi'lek is a little wild. Maybe you could tighten it up? Just my opinion.

I think you are right.  It does look better in person but I need to clean up a few of the edges.  I'll work on that tomorrow!

Love the Twi'lek Brent.  Those ladies are always so hot... truly the sex symbols of Star Wars.  Great custom she turned out hot.

Smarty that's a cool custom, so he's a gladiator/slave?  Looks cool, I'd like to see the master that controls this guy!

 :)

NIce one there Smarty. One question there though. Where did you get his armor peices. They look pretty sweet. They are kind of what I have in mind for a few of my Vong customs Im stuck on. I am looking forward to seeing the handler.

Excellent Twi'Leks Brent.I like the blue one, and I cant wait to see what the other one looks like painted. I agree with trimming it up a little though. It would look most excellent if it were skin tight, and more form fitting.
BTW exactly what did you use for that anyway. I think you may have given me an idea.

CC1 Hey great job, they look much better.
On the slave, if its an open cut. Mix a bit of black with some red to make it that dark color. Blood isn't like bright red. If its a scar, A redish pink works reall well. I'd also paint the armor on the Imp to be that same color. :)

It is a doilee (spelling) that I picked up at Michael's.  It was near the gift wrap/ ribbon sections.  I haven't had a chance to go back and tighten this up but I plan on it.

Nice entries DN.  I've commented on them before but they deserve some secondary thoughts as well.  Perhaps the holster on the slave chould be removed.  Its unlikely that a slave would be equipped with an ankle holster...but you never know.  Both are great entries.  Once again nice stuff

DN - You may have said this before, but where did the arms from the Slave come from?  They look like good bare arms for custom figures.
