Mine is John Elway. The guy was an amazing quarterback and won two SUper Bowls at the end of his career. Plus he is cool off the field and has a hot wife. Can't beat #7

My Dad. I won't get into all the detail, but he's pretty much been my hero since day 1, or at least as far back as I can remember.
Of course, I used to idolize a lot of professional athletes as a kid - mostly in baseball and basketball, but I wouldn't say that they were my heroes. Just looked up to them and admired them. But now that I'm older than most of the star athletes in sports ( :'(), this no longer happens...
-
I'm with the used to category as well Matt not there is anything wrong with having athletes as heros Lenny
My dad and both of my grandfathers are very much hero worthy and I always try to live my life by their fine example. My dad recently found out he has a very small and probably benign brain tumor (in the brain lining) and so I've been thinking about him a lot recently and praying that everything will be fine since he has always been one of my best buddies.
Both of my grandpas were in WWII which really wasn't a huge deal for me until I saw Saving Private Ryan. One of them was very close to being sent over on D-Day but came down with meningitis days before the invasion and was sent home. The other one fought throughout Italy. Both of them never talked about it so I realized after seeing the movie why...how could you explain to a kid what happened over there.
Historical heroes of mine include President Theodore Roosevelt who was one of the greatest men of the 20th century. And author Ernest Hemingway who lived one of the greatest lives of any American, both of whom lived life to the utmost which is what I try to do every day. So it is more of a emulation rather than anything heroic

My prayers and best wishes are with your dad and your family, Scott...

I'm in the same boat as Matt, but mine is a bit different. My parents are my heroes. They win that together as a two-way tie. There are no two other people on this Earth who mean more to me than them (well, my wife is right there with them too). They have done so much for me in my lifetime, and I just hope to be as good of parents as they have been to me.

My Mom, definitely. She raised me by herself, and did a damn good job, I think. I mean, just look at me now-- you can't get much better than this. :-*
She came for a visit this weekend, and told me that she was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I'm freaking out way more than she is, and although she assures me that it's not that bad (not the agressively degenerative kind), I'm still not quite sure how to deal with the news. My Mom's been mysteriously ill on and off since I was a kid, so she's actually glad she finally has a diagnosis. She had a best friend a long time ago that had MS, who was wheelchair bound and miserable all the time, she died when I was twelve. She was an amazing person, and I can never forget how the disease ruined her. My Mother's memory is starting to fail her a little bit, she gets fevers every afternoon and has to sleep, loss of vision in one eye and numbness in one arm, but other than that, it's not too bad for her right now. It's difficult to think that my Supermom, the highly intelligent diva that she is, is not indestructible.

Ugh. What's with this thread? Why do our heroes have to be afflicted with such terrible things? :'(
Really sorry to hear about your mom Carrie. Again, prayers and best wishes to her, you, and the rest of your family as you all learn about and cope with her MS... :(
-
Man you're right Matt, best wishes and prayers for your mom too Carrie. They thought my sister had MS last year and she still might her bloodwork and spinal taps have all been normal though. So I did a lot of reading on MS last year...sounds like with a lot of the recent drug improvements, MS has come a long way in the past 10 years.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. :-*

Best wishes & prayers to both Scott & Carrie's family.
My heros are my parents as well. My Mom just turned 77 & my Dad is 82. I have had a few scares with my Dad in the past couple of years. He had an abdominal aneurysm & a case of neumonia. To close for me but my Dad is a fighter & he pulled through.
I have one more hero to add, its my best friends Dad. I've have known there family since I was 12. Last year his Dad passed away from a heart transplant. I have always looked up to him as a second father. :)
Scott, you really don't want to hear the stories of WWII. My Dad was in WWII & he saw Saving Private Ryan & its not as close as they portrayed.
-
Same for Scott and Carrie. Life is no fun, especially not at the end. My mom passed away almost 4 years ago and she would have been my hero.
My dad and all the uncles and aunts are heros too. They teach so much and do it with love and patience. I only hope to be as good as they were for my daughter.
I don't think I have heroes outside that group, or at least I'm not prepared to look past anyone's flaws other than those in the family. For me, it's a case of respect or not. As I've aged, become more and more educated and questioned everything, I have found so many things, causes and people leave me empty due to the untruths and outright lies that family is what I trust.
Some friends are exceptional, notably one. He was the best man at my wedding. Great guy, met him/worked with him about the same time I met my wife. He has always been an exceptional person, above all else he is fair. He only asks his employees to be honest and work hard to do their best. Lie, cheat or steal and he'll boot you out on your a$$. Work hard and he'll give you the shirt off his back. He's an exceptional father and a good husband. Good golfer and can he pound beer ;D I'm pleased to call him my friend and think that emulating his behaviour is a worthwhile thing to do. Plus his younger kid is into Star Wars so I'm going to corrupt him big time. ;)

You've got a very pretty Mom there Carrie... How old is she? (I won't tell her you told me ;))
-
She's 55 years old, actually. I think she looks pretty incredible for her age. I hope that I look that good when I'm 55, that's for sure.
-
WOW!!! CC You and your mom are both easy on the eyes. ;)
I don't have a real life hero. The best I can do is Spiderman. I can relate to him on many levels.
-
I have a couple. Jimmy Buffett and Tucker Max. Both live a lifestyle I would like to. Doing what they love and not worrying about what they're "supposed" to do
-
CC, so sorry to hear about your mom. But she sounds like a woman of great strength, so I'm sure both of you will be fine. Best wishes.
This topic is so interesting to me because I realized in reading it I never really thought of myself as having heroes. I don't know if that's good or bad. I certainly did as a child. George Lucas was one, simply because he made me want to make movies. Astronauts. The Challenger crew.
My grandfather is one of my heroes. I think the biggest hero in my life now is my cousin Kim. She's a bedrock of joy and passion for life despite all the things that would otherwise impede her. She's a bright shining light in an often dark world and she makes me smile. That's heroic.
-
My hero is Lance Armstrong. (pro cycling god) With people like him around there is no excuse for not giving something your best effort or saying "I can't".

What!?!? No one has said me yet!?!?! ;D ;D ;D
