Title: Jedi_Master_Ben's Wax Shop
Post by: Jedi_Master_Ben on March 27, 2006, 10:53 PM
Hello everyone,

I thought I should make a separate posting covering this question. Who here would be interested in my alien heads? I have a few private messages both from JD and RS forums asking me for cast of these heads I have been making the past week now. I want to get a feeling of who wants them, how many I would have to make and see if I could provide enough. So if you want your own Minbari or another alien head I make, please sound off here. Also, if you have a request for an alien head, I need to know if you want it in a ball joint or peg head and what gender. Pictures are always helpful.

Thanks everyone,

Jedi_Master_Ben

I guess I should be more specific - I'm thinking of maybe a Twi'lek male head or two.  I don't know what would be best, a ball joint probably?

Hey everyone,

I am glad this idea is picking up steam. I am just thrilled that I can provide something back to the custom community. I would have never thought to take on this project if I did not have the backing of the community. I think this experience will be better than working for Hasbro, at least I know my sculpting will be appreciated. As for charging for each custom cast head, I was planning on the first head $5.00 (this will include shipping) and $3.00 for additional head. The more heads purchased, greater the savings on shipping. I am not really out to make a lot of money on this, just to cover my expenses for materials. I am really having fun with this. Just in the past week, I managed to sculpt 4 heads (one finished and 3 WIP). I mean come on, where else can I get to sculpt the Cheyang head for Farscpe and then turn around and sculpt the seer Aughra from Dark Crystal the next? This is Awesome!!! Thanks everyone for allowing the opportunity to express myself here ;D ;D ;D.

Keep checking this thread for progress images of each head. And if you want an alien head that you do not see on the list yet, send me a pm or post your request here and I will add it to the list. The list is just for me a map so I know what head to sculpt next. I would like to sculpt as many sci-fi heads as possible (even star trek ;D).

Thanks again,

Jedi_Master_Ben

Hey those are great looking aliens! I was not going to follow Dr. Who because I thought I would be lost with out seeing all the older episodes. But if this a sign of things to come from the show, then I will start watching it and take notes. Thanks for the post, I will add them to the list.

These aliens were shown on the second episode "end of the world" of the new season on the SciFi channel. I have all ten or twelve episodes on DVD directly from the BBC broadcasts last year that havn't been shown yet on SciFi. The first episode "Rose" explains everything about the Doctor and is a good primer for the show. I could burn you a copy if your interested maybe as a trade for a head or two?

Wow, great headsculpts Ben!  The minute details are really captured well, I can't wait to see what else you will be doing!

I think some sort of "neutral" alien headsculpts, like a Klatoonian (Barada without his bandana), or a neutral Nikto head sculpt, etc would make for great army (or would it be "thug") building.

Hey everyone,

I just added the changes to the Verpine head. I narrowed the head, added more detail, added the manuables and the anttennas. Check out the latest image posted in the list. Now that I have this done, I can now focus on these female Twe'lik heads.

Until next posting,

I like your sculpt of the centauri male head. I personally would cut away the hair fan thing and use that head to make the endor rebel viking looking dude. Nice work... Ever thought of sculpting some clone/stormtrooper type helmets?
Title: Re: Who here would be interested in my alien heads?

Hey everyone,

hemble:  As always, thank you for the comment. I saw a sketch of her from the Galaxey video game during my research of Twi'lek male and females. I liked how they did not put on those head harnesses most female Twi'leks have. The twisting of the tail on top of her head was a nice touch.

stormtripper: Thanks for the comments. I really liked the face on him. At the time I first sculpted the head, I was watching Babylon5 and it made scence to make him a Centauri. After I cast the head, you could modify the head for that custom. That is why I am taking on such  a project. Speaking of which, there are a few people out there that specialize in sculpting clone trooper helmets. I do not see the point in doing something that others are already doing and doing it well. I do not see the challenge in that. These alien heads are perfect for me because no one else is doing this type of project and I think everyone will benifit by these sculpts/casts for their future projects.

Thanks everyone,

Jedi_Master_Ben

Hey everone,

I wanted to let you know  that I posted an update to the alien head list with the second Twi'lek sculpt. I had alot of request for a more generic female head sculpt. A third head will be made from this one to make this headdress:

I am going to skip through the list and proceed to sculpt male Twi'leks next. I working on a deal to get the right body type for the luxan.

Until next posting,

Very impressive alien heads, Ben!  I like 'em!  Those Twi'leks in particular are fantastic, and very useful to us SW customizers (though the Babylon 5 heads are no less cool, by any means).

If you are taking "requests," then I, like Gregorbian, would love to see what you'd come up with for neutral, "thuggish" headsculpts like Klatooinians, Niktos, Rodians, Duros, Squibs, and the like.  (And guess what other alien I'd love to see! :) )

Thanks again, and keep up the very fine work.  I'll keep checking this.

Hey everyone,

I know I just posted the second female Twi'lek head only a few hours ago, but I got another update for you. I just posted detailed images of a male Twi'lek head in the alien head list. This one was a quick one. I started this sculpt out by doing a clay impression of a gi joe head. I cut the peg and hollowed out the head and stuck it on a han solo body. From this point on, I sculpted the rest. The only thing left of the joe is the eyes and mouth. everything else had to be modified for the Twi'lek. I hope you will like it. I will start the generic head latter tommarrow, it is now way to late for anything else.

Until next posting,

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I just posted detailed pics of male Twi'lek head sculpt. This one with the head tail sweeped back. I have been asked to do a teenage Twi'lek to go on a Zett body. So that gave me an idea to do youngling male and female heads. Once I have the third female head done, and I get te Zett body in, I will sculpt the teenagers. After I have them molded and casted, I could offer them up as individual heads or as a Twi'lek set.  I am trying to get some ROTS loose jedi figures including Obi wan #55 so I can sculpt the Qui-Gon Jin and Cin Drallig, and I have a body comming to me on loan to sculpt the Luxan head on. So then the next head will be the Bothans. Acording to the Galaxey game, Bothans are like Hobits, shorter than humans. I will figure something out. Any input on how to treat the Bothans would be of help.

Thanks for stopping by,

Jedi_Master_Ben

Damn dude, your sculpting skills are amazing!   :o
I can't believe how quickly you are turning these out, how long does each one take?
Title: Re: Who here would be interested in my alien heads?
Post by: Jedi_Master_Ben on April 5, 2006, 11:12 PM
Thanks Gregorbian for the compliment. I takes me 2-8 hours per head the lesser if I do a press clay base head to sculpt to. I have a silicon mold of verious gi joe heads that I used to have and press clay into each side and bring the halves together. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. I do this only for my back ground charaters and I so much detail work on them like hats and facial hair, by the time I am done, there is no resemblence of the joe head there. It was a great tool for me as a sculptor starting out. It taught me how to place the eyes and mouth and ears correctly in this scale. Now, I rarely use it anymore. The only problem is that the joe female heads were not proportiant to the SW females, to big. Besides, when I made this mold, there were only Leia heads available.

Again, thanks for the comment.

Hi Everyone,

I know I have not posted a new alien head in the past 5 days, with all the work I have been putting into my Psadan Gladiator and the Gargan's Hoover accessory. But not to worry, I would not leave you all with out a little something. I have updated the alien list with a new alien head sculpt. Thanks to roron_corobb over at RS, for  loaner Colemen body, I was able to get one of my favorite heads made on Sunday, The Luxan Male Head!!! Thats right, its my favorite Luxan, Ka'Dargo from Farscape. It took all day to get his features just right. In doing some research for photo refrences, I came accross several male and female Luxans. So most likely I will return to this species.  I did win some loose ROTS jedi on e-bay and they should be here by the end of the week, so I will have other bodies types to showcase my alien heads. Thanks for stoping by. Next up will be some Bothans.

Hey Ben,
The Luxan head turned out great.  Its a great match with the Colemon body.  Every time I see this sculpts I can't believe the details you get on something so small.  Seeing it made me think, can we add a Nataulian (spelling?) to the list.  We could use another version to match our Kit Fistos.

I'm just curious, what does someone with so much artistic talent like you do for a living?  (assuming you are all grown up already  ;) )  You should work for a toy company making models!

Keep up the great work.

Hey everyone,

I have been EXTREAMLLY buisy this last week. With this months MMC, the neck conversion kit and this project, I am suprise I can find time to sleep ;D. OK, all joking aside, I have for you today is an update to the alien list. I have added two types of detailed WIP Bothan heads. Now a little funny thing happened while sculpting the first one, some how I managed to sculpt the head to big for the Zett body. I put it on my newly aquired Obi Wan #55 body and it works great for it. Now I could stop there and be donw with it, however, it would be hippacritical to rant about the height of the character and then just leave it on a larger body. So, I sculpted another head, this time making sure to stay proportiant and modeled the head after the freshly sculpted larger version and was happy with that result. Now I am left with two versions of this head. So, instead of wasting a sculpt and putting into the recycle bin, I am giving you, the customizer, the choice of sizes. Yes, you heard it right, you get to choose. For those who read the books and comics and believe that bothans are average huminoid height, and for those of you who follow the online discription and play the Galaxies game, you have a shorter version. I still have to tweek the hair style so they match and get the features just right, but for the most part, I think I got the job done. Let me know what you think. I can always change the hair around to a diffrent design if the masses agree. Here is a size comperison of what I think the Bothans look like, based on the Galaxies game:

I still have to sculpt the female version, the Twi'lek teens, and Master K'Kruhk's  head so I can get these figures I have on loan back to their owners, not to mention all the other stuff going on.

I hope you will enjoy,

Jedi_Master_Ben

Whenever you start casting these definitely put me on the list for:
Master K'Kruhk
Verpine Male
Twilek female

You really have some fantastic skill there and the fact that you are willing to share at such a low cost says alot. Are you planning on getting into the toy industry at some point? You really would have quite an amazing portfolio.

I know you're probably backed up with requests, but I had an idea over the weekend. Have you given any thought to making a few updated head sculpts of the say Han, luke and Leia. Kind of age them a little as they would appear in NJO. And for the love of God could you please do something about Luke's hair. ;D

Just a thought.

I thought I would start a new thread to showcase this area of this art skill. I have only started to work with wax just this past two months or so and have adapted to it like fish to water. First let me show you my workstation.

And here is a close up of the tools used to work with the wax.

I use a soldering iron with a modified tip to melt the wax and drip on wax to the wax sculpt and also used to remove large amount of wax flashing left over from the wax casting process. The rest of the tools are various carving instruments used to scrape away excess wax. It turns out the wax I get from Bantha5 can be worked with clay shaping tools so I did not have to invest in a new set of tools. Any chance to save a few bucks is always welcomed.

Now lets have a see at what I have been working on for the past month or so. First up is a collection of Alien heads I have made wax casts of for fine detailing. I still have 5 more heads to make molds of to round out wave 1 of alien heads. Here is a sneak peak at what they look like:

These are in various stages of progression. The Minbari head is almost done. I will be posting more detailed wax head shots as they are finished.

Next up is my masterpiece in progress. You have all seen the clay sculpt of her in different parts sculpted on various cast resin pieces. I am referring to my Gargan figure that I start back in December. Even though I finished the sculpt of the figure over a month ago, it could not see it assembled until now thanks to casting parts in wax. Now you too can see for the first time the assembled Gargan figure:

She is still a work in progress. I found that I had many corrections to make such as air bubble from imperfect molds, and much needed modifications after articulation was designed. Here is a pic showing all the parts that make up the Gargan:

It was after putting in the articulation that I had to make changes to my initial sculpt. For example, I made the arms to wide for proper articulation, so I had to slim them down, also the boobs were not angled correctly when the torso is sitting on the skirt so that had to be changed. Then there was the hollowing out the headdress and skirt. Based on some recommendations, I decided to mold the head dress with the head in it and same with the skirt with the leg base as well. On several occasions I broke tips off or melted holes, but the beauty of wax is that you can just add more to it and keep moving on. For the most part, the initial sculpt maintains its integrity. For my first wax figure, I probably should have not chose the Gargan with so many parts and extreme amount of detail. She has been a great learning project for me and I am having a lot of fun and above all else, I am really proud of how she is starting to turn out.

Well it is late now, so I will turn this over to you all for comments, questions and suggestions. Thanks for looking and stay tuned for more updates on this thread.

Wow! That Gargan is incredible! It really rivals Bantha5's version. Please say your going to make casts of that figure. I really want one! She would be so cool to add to my collection. Have you started to mass produce those Babaylon 5 heads yet?

Thanks Master_Phruby,

I appriciate your comments. Let me answer some of your questions. Bantha5's version of the Gargan is based on the vintage Kenner toyline. My Gargan is designed to fit with the Saga toyline with the inclusion of the ball joint head and neck. Bantha5 inspired me to make this updated version. And it is still not finnished yet, there is still more to come, the Hoover creature accessory. Next, this is trully my finest work to date, and saying that, I would like to send a copy to Hasbro to see if they would produce it. I think my idea of the hoover accessory would be a great selling point for collectors and fans. If for some reason Hasbro refuses to take my figure as a commission work, then yes, I would offer it to you all. I would need some help in making a finnal (no air bubbles) mold and cast since I do not have a preasure chamber yet.

The Babylon 5 heads as well as the rest of wave 1 of the alien head line is still in development. As you can see in the pictures, they have moved to the wax detailing stage of production. Once I have the final wax sculpt done, I will post them here and then post the final cast head in the alien head thread or start a new thread showcasing the final casted head. When done, wave 1 will contain 15 heads for you all to use in your customs. I know this is taking a long time, but I want to provide the best work possible for you all.

I am having way too much fun with wax casting and sculpting and I hope to have these finnished soon.

Thanks again for your wonderful comments and stay tunned for more updates.

Ben, I'm jealous that your workstation is so clean compared to mine!
I commented over at scum, but the Gargan is comming along beautifully.
I've undoubtably missed quite a few great customs over the past month, I'm glad i caught this one.

Good luck with the big H.  Your figure deserves to e mass produced. I would add articulation to the elbows before doing so. Beuatiful sculpt aside, Just as prety much all the figures they release these days have them, the elbow articulation would be missed.

Is the Gargan figure a Licensing issue though?  Liek the Tonnika's?

Once again, beautiful work.

P.S.  chceck you PM over at scum.

Good to have you back Ben.

Are you thinking of selling cast of these on Ebay as well, As you know my parents arn't
very cool about me hanging out with people "I don't know"

The gargan is great, you really got the sculpt down, don't be offended if i don't want to add her to my collection.

Exceptional work on that Gargan.  The detailing is simply jaw-dropping.

I'm not clear on this...the head you have posted are original sculpts you have done?  That is some extremely impressive work there.  Great work set-up too  :)

I am blown away by how incredible your sculpting skills are!  They are definitely top notch.  I don't know how hasbro deals with commission sculpting, but they'd be crazy not to take this.  Those headsculpts came out great as well.  Nice work all around Ben!

Hello everyone,

I have to say that I missed being here this summer. I had too much on my plate with a death in the family, work (TV Production), family vacation to California, amongst other things. I was also in a slump after all that and then Comic Con '06 and Hasbo's opening comments/slide show. BAM! i got hit with all kinds of e-mail and PM asking me about my Gargan. It was the motivation I needed to get back on the saddle and start sculpting again.

I have finished the Gargan wax sculpt and now making the mold for Hoover. I ran out of the RTV silicon and more is on order, until then I picked up the heads again and worked on  those until the silicon arrives. As stated before, I want to show the Gargan and Hoover to Hasbro and see if they would produce it. Therefore, I will not be showing the final sculpt here just in case if they have problems with posting works in progress. If they turn down my offer, then I will post all the pictures of them then.

Now for today's update, I have a finished sculpt for you to see. During the summer, I got arround to getting some of the Clone Wars Graphic Novels and fell in love with them. I have one favorite that really stands out to me and I already started him before I went on vacation. I am talking about none other than Jedi Master K'Kruhk and here is the picture:

I really wanted to capture the feel and look of the comic version. I have seen other customs of him using the whipid action figure head and either Foul's torso or bits of some jedi and J'QUILLE the whipid. It just did not settle with me that would pass as Jedi Master K'Kruhk. In the comic, he wears jedi clothing ontop of his fur and his feet are wrapped in ninja like shoes.  So I changed my head several times making the hair fuller and beard longer and added the pig tails down the face. I also wanted to open his eyes up some more like the comic version than the movie prop. Something in the eyes that were drawn brought life and character to Jedi Master. The only thing now is wether to stop here or go on and make the whole figure.

Well thats it for today. Let me know what you think and I welcom any inputs. Stay tunned for more heads this week since I accually finished quite a few the past month.

Hi Everyone,

I first would like to thank everyone for all the kind words and welcome backs. Thanks for the feedback on the K'Kruhk head sculpt, I spent a week on it and I really took a leap of faith on it. I am glad to see that you all liked the outcome. Now for todays update. I have two heads for you that I finished last night (small touchups and last minute changes). I have a male and  a female Twi'lek heads:

I also have some news regarding the Gargan/Hoover project. My RTV silicon stuff arrived last night and I finished the Hoover mold. Tonight, when I get back from work, I will cast the wax copy of Hoover for final detail work. Once I am done with him, I will place the call to Hasbro to see if they will see me. Cross your fingers and say a preyer for me. I really hope this will work out.

Anyways, thanks for stopping by and enjoy the pics. Stay tuned for more updates this week.

Ok Folks,

I am on a roll, I have another update; two more heads deamed finished. I have the Centari head and the Minbari head sculpts. Here they are:

I had a hard tiime getting the fine detail in the minbari head piece, but I think I got it down now. The centari head was practicle untouch except for the hair lines into the hair fan. I will be casting the Hoover tonight so I might not have time to get another round of finished head pics in until tommarrow. As aways, enjoy the pics.

Hi guys and gals,

So last night I made my Hoover wax cast and was very pleased that I only had to make minor repairs to it. I only had to make one pass at pouring the wax into the mold. Which is great seeing that there were some undercuts that I missed and pieces of mold was stuck. I had to rip the silicon free from the cast and remove the pieces  with pliers and tweesers. All and all a good run. I was able to get all the flashing removed last night, reposition one leg, filled in some air bubbles before stopping. I found some extra time last night to finish up two more heads for posting today. They are the second and third female Twi'lek heads. They were mostly done except I did not like the way the eyes and eyebrows were, so I touched them up. Here are the two ladies:

Notice that each of the three female twi'leks head tail are possitioned differently and there are no head bands or wrappings. I did this so that customizers could modify them to meet thier design needs. They are also based on concept design and game play footage of SW Galaxey and other games. The males are the same way. Well that's it for now, I hope you enjoy. I will continue to work on the details on the Hoover and might post two more heads tonight.

Until next time,

Hey everyone,

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I have been asked by many people about selling cast of these sculptures and how much it would cost and how many to order. Well let me tell you that I working out a deal to get these pieces cast. I should be able to make an announcement sometime this week. Until then, be paitient. I still have half the heads finished and finishing up the Gargan project.

With that out of the way, lets show you the latest updates for this week. I will say that I made one adjustment in the previous post, Male Twi'lek 1 has been slightly modified and his pic is updated. Here are the remaining Male Twi'lek 2 and 3:

Hi everyone,

I have been buisy this week with work for GTG team. I did manage to finish one more of my now famous alien heads. Today I display the fiinal wax sculpt of Sheyang head. Here is the pic:

Compared to the clay sculpt, I some how managed to change the overall look from a slender Sheyang to a much fatter Sheyang. I found some more refrence pics and saw that I did not have the face right and something bothered me about the back of the head. By the time I was done, I did a quick comparison to the original clay model and reallized the size difference. Now normally I would have scratched the sculpt in favor of clay model version, but I liked the way it turned out and I do recall there were different sizes on the Farscape show. The good thing is that I can now go back to the mold and make a slender version latter on. I still have 4 more heads to finish up, so stay tunned for more updates.

Hi everyone,

I have another head sculpt finished, which mean I only have 3 more alien heads to finish to complete wave 1 of this series. Today I have for you the Male Luxan Head. He is modeled after Ka'Dargo from Farscape tv show (one of the best Sci-fi shows of all time). I left off scare that he has to give him more of a generic look. I will go back later and add the scar for those who want it. So here is the pic:

I hope you all enjoy this one, he is one of my favorites and was a great joy to make it.

Hey everyone,

I hope everyone is having a great Labor day vacation so far. I am taking full advantage of it this weekend. I plan to finish the rest of Wave One Alien heads. Today I have for you is the completed Verpine Head Wax Finish! This one was an early request by someone over at Rebelscum. I was inspired by the one Dark Horse picture of this Verpine wiping out the clones after Order 66. I made some minor changes along the way compared to the clay sculpt. Here is the pic:

Well that's it for now. I only have two more heads left, Bothan Small head and Bothan Large head. Stay tuned for more updates as they are posted.

Hey everyone,

Well, it has sure been a long week and I look back now and see how many wax sculpts got finished. I have for you today is the Bothan Large (normal human size) head sculpt. This is based on some star wars galaxies concept art for the bothan male. Here is the pic:

Which means that I only have one more head to finish, the smaller (hobit size) Bothan head. I should have that done by then end of Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the update, and don't forget to add your requests of your favorite alien head you always wanted done 1:18th scale.

Until next time,

Hello Everyone,

I finished the Bothan small head last night which means that Wave 1 of my alien heads is now complete. Let me say a few things about this head before showing the picture. When I was doing research on the Bothans, I came accross a problem about size. Some sources placed their hieght at 5'4" , where as other sources placed them as standard human hieght 5'10" to 6'. I placed the question to the community as to which size do they want and found that they were split as well. So I sculpted two sizes to ensure I cover the dimentions. The small head is ment to fit on a Zett Jukassa body. So here it is:

I will be posting the next wave of alien heads in a new thread shortly. Enjoy the pics.

Hello Everyone,

I just finished the first head for wave 2 Alien Females. Today I have for you is a Mon Calamari Female. The design is based on the concept art from the SW Galaxies game. I figured it was high time to  provide customiziers a appropiate scale head for their Mon Calamari female character. I hope you will like her. Here is a pic:

Well, thats out of the way, onto the next head.

Until next time,

:o Awesome what else can be said, except I want them all  ;D  suggestion how about some hands for the female mon cal.  the only reason I say this is because all the mon cals that hasbro has made would probably look a little big on her, and what might the bothan hands look like, seeing that their furry would some wookie hands blend in well with them or would that probably be too much hair?  sorry don't mean too sound anal, but looking at your sculpts you obviously pay a lot of attention to detail.  also the ball joints on the head are they easy to dremel out to place them on other bodies.   i'd hate to get one of these and melt/burn it out.  thanx for your patience with the 20 questions i'm just really looking forward to getting some of these when you're up and ready.

Hey guys,

Ok, requests were posted over at GTG for light sabers sculpts last week or so. Phalanxx, thanks for the pic refrences, they helped get me going. I searched arround for verious designs that I found appealing. Unfortunatly, my camera does not take the best close up small detail pics. Here are 5 freshly sclupted light sabers:

Jedi Master T'ra Saa's Light Saber with the wooden handle detail

Thats it for now. I am going to get these to GTG as soon as possible. Look for more light sabers to come in the next comming months. I will post pics over in my Wax Shop under the Armory section.

Hey Everyone,

A few weeks ago I posted over at GTG, information about a mistery head that was sculpted for wave 1 that was requested by the GTG staff. Well here she is, Darth Talon from the SW Legacy comic.

Have you considered doing sculps of people Ben?
I mean for example if a member of JD wanted to make a custom figure of themselves could you sculpt them a head of themselves, for a price obviously.

Hey Everyone,

I have great news, the first wave of sculpted heads, sabers, and weapons will be up in the Good To Go Customs store this Monday :D !!! I got a sneak peak at the cast heads and I almost shed a tear of joy. They look fabulous in color plastic. I have to say, my favorite is Jedi Master K'Kruhk. But then again, like children, they are all my favorites. The staff at GTGC has given my work an exclusive section with in the store, so it should be real easy to find these pieces. Now I do have to warn you that supplies will be limited in the first run, but I have their insurances that they will try to keep the restock updated.

I would like to take this time to thank each and everyone who has posted comments, sent pms, and viewed this thread and offered there support. I am very touched by the overwhelming response to this project. I hope everyone will enjoy their cast pieces and I look forward in seeing your creations using these pieces. And stay tuned, I have more updates coming in the next week, featuring Wave 2 female heads, double blade sabers, and more mech weapons.

Hey Everyone,

I have not posted here for a while so I thought I will update you all with 2 finished sculpted figures. Here is the first one, the Alien Thug 3 wax sculpt. ;D I am really proud of how it turned out. I finished this one on 31-DEC-06. Here is the breakdown on how he was made. I did a clay impression mold of the POTF2 Klatuu head and hands and the vintage Wooof helmet. I made a one time resin cast of these parts and used supper sculpty to fill in any gaps between the the face and the helmet. I also made sure that the head was ball-jointed to match the current Saga line. The rest of the body was sculpted. I then made a mold of the body and of the head (not the hands) and made a wax cast. From here I tooled the 12 points of articulation. I did an extensive study of the Saga design figures to make sure I had the articulation correct. After I had the articulation down, then I refined the details. I use this technique for the Alien Thug 2 as well. I got a lot of pics of him and I am also following my friend Sith_Fire30 photo method and bring you grey scale images to help bring the details out more. So enjoy the pics and let me know what you think.

Up next is the Alien Thug 2. I accually would have finished  him earlier today if it wasn't for the errors I caught in the sculpt. It so happens that I was watching the ROTJ DVD looking up reference material for Alien Thug 1 when I caught the jacket details on Thug 2 were wrong. I had to change the jacket, shoulder sleeves and collor. I am glad I took the time to do this now or it would have bugged me later on. In addition to the costume rework, I touched up the head by accenting the skin folds and vines, deffine the eyes, correct the details that were missing from the POTF2 head and cleaned up excess wax between the bandana and the back of the head. The head has alot more freedom to move compared to the POTF2 model. Now for the part that you all are waiting for, the pictures.

And as I did for the Alien Thug 3, here are some Grey Scale pics to help show off the details.

I might do some more tweaking here and there as I spot stuff I missed, (taking pictures help me look at my sculpts differently and I can spot things I want to fix after studing the photos) also feed back from you all help me to find those things I missed. But overall, I am happy with the way it turned. I have one more left to touch up now so it is back to work. See you all later.

Hey everyone,

Well I hope everyone is enjoying the pics and reports that are comming in from Toyfare '07. I have for you today the finished sculpt on the Alien Thug #1. Here is a breakdown on what I did for him. I first reworked the face and head gear. Alot of detail was lost during the impression molding I did on both the Vintiage and POTF2 heads. I then rounded the back and sides of the head near the neck so that the head had more movement on the ball-joint neck. I also longated the face spikes a little and made the eyes more pomident. I also added some additional cloth detail between the face and the helmet. It helped masked the gap between the fussion of both pieces. In addition, the refernce photos I have show the same thing, so it is more accurite to the costume in the movie. Speak of which, I could only find one refernce photo of this guy and it is he same picture that was used on the vintage card. Even the chronicle book did not have this guys photo, imagine that. Anyways, The torsol was touched up a little following the example of both the vintage figure and the reference photo.  I followed the vintage figure wrinkle pattern and gave an additional lace so it has 4 instead 3 on the shirt.Since there are no shots of this guy from the back (other than the movie) I had to rely on the figure and guessing. The arms again are modeled after the vintage figure with modification for articulation. The hand is the same resin cast hand from the impression mold with extra wax to fill in either missing fingers or air bubbles. The shirt tails is model after the vintage figure with the addition of a leather strap that goes from the belt buckel to the back pouches. I caught this detail while watching the movie and studing the reference photo. Now the legs were very interesting and a pain in the butt. Both the reference photo and the vintage figure show signs that the knees are at the quilted part of the pants. This ment I had to cut the quilted pattern to make the knees. Once I had the knees done, it was a matter of rounding the edges in the quilted pattern to finish the effect. I finnished the detail work with filling in air bubble in the shoes and scribing the strap details into the shoes.

Now for the part you all are waiting for, the pictures. I have the four profile shots in color and also more angles in grey scale to show off more of the details.

Well another figure completed. I am really getting a hang on making the SA style figures. I started working on the Alien pilot a few days ago so I should have something for you all next week. Thanks again for stopping by and don't forget to leave a comment on the way out. I love to read what you all have to say.

Title: Female Wookie Project
Post by: Jedi_Master_Ben on March 15, 2007, 10:10 AM
HeyEveryone,

I just got in a donor VOTC Chewie from Hawkeye for another project (think Sithfire's K'Kruhk custom). After I boiled and popped the feet, I reallized I had an oppertunity to study the design. Here is a pic:

The head seems to hold everything in place, so popping the head allowed me to break down the torsol. I then tried on the female Alien Head #12 on the neck post and saw that it did not fit. I retooled it so it could fit on the neck post and shoulders. I then notice that I had an opertunity to make a mini cutsom kit by changing the chest from male to female. In the process, I notice that Chewie's midsection was too straight on the sides and his belly extended out. I made a new section that gave her an hourglass figure of sorts (what I can get away with in all that fur). This is what I came up with:

Because I used wax on the torsol, I could not put back on the arms for the photos, but I held them in place while I was working on her and they look fine. She really looks slim and danty next to one of those hulking Wookies from ep3. I am happy at the way this turned out. As seen in the last picture, the kit includes three pieces, head, chest and mid section.

I hope this something that you all can use. I still rember when SW Galaxies was reviewed by X-Play and Morgan Webb made a female wookie character to test the game, and showed the dancing wookie. Well now the wookies can dance and do what ever you want. So dance wookie, dance your heart out.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the comments so far. It means a lot and I do really listen to what you have to say. Glassman6 had a very good point about the hight, she did appear too tall for a female. I went back and did some more tweeking and I think I got it decent enough. The main problem is in th length of the torsol rod. I compensated this by making the hole in the neck deeper. Here is a latest compareson of the ep3 wookie and votc chewie.

Again, thank you for the comments and I look forward to having this over at GTG soon.

This is going to make a nice female wookiee. However, I've always thought of female wookiees as being more plump like Malla in the SWHS. I think it would be better to use the wookiee warrior as a base for a Malla female wookiee instead of skinny Chewie.

First, thanks to all that have posted thier thoughts, suggestions and comments.

As for the female wookie, I would have thought that maybe 20 some odd years ago, but now with the newer media out there, I have seen slender female wookies. I was basing this design from the SW Galaxies game wookies, were the gamer can modify the character to what they want to be in the game. The head sculpt is fashioned after a SWCC game card I found. So the cross between the two forms of media, I cam up with this kit. It seem easy enough for the cassual customizer to modify and at least opens up the possibilities for more characters. That does not mean that I would not consider a more portly female charater kit down the road. I will have to see about tracking down another one of the larger wookie  bodies seeing that the one I have is spoken for my own custom K'Kurhk based on our own Sithfire designs, with my own twist to it.

Thanks again for the comments, I really enjoy hearing back from you all.

Until next time,

Hey Guys,

I was lurking about the board when I found this great custom of a SA Qui-Gon Jinn by HappyNoodleBoy. I was inspired to dig up a some parts and whip up my own version. First off, I wasn's sure if I should do a new sculpt on the head or use one of the existing Hasbro versions. I did have one of the Applause statues and compared the face sculpt to the statue and notice that the Hasbro (finial duel version) was very close. I repainted the head and used some Fixit-Sculpt to lengthen the hair and square the back hair piece. I then hollowed out the head so it could fit on a SA Obi-Wan neck-post. I notice that the Obi-Wan torsol was too short for a Qui-Gon, so I decided to use the existing torsol, In order to achieve the ball-neck for the head, I used one of the new Male Neck Post Conversion Kits (comming soon to GTG) in place of the swivil neck hole. I then used a dremel to bore in the shoulder so that the Obi-Wan arms will fit. I then popped the legs off and put in the Obi-Wan legs and then sculpted the boot details with Fixit-Sculpt. I did not like the hands that came with the Obi-Wan for this custom, I went with the first set that I had laying arround, Bail Organa (ROTS version). The robe is from the new SA Mace Windu. Ok, enough with the talk, lets see some pics:

And just for fun, I did a quick head conversion on a young Obi-Wan and put it on the SA Obi-Wan body (unpainted for now). Here is the Master and the Padawan ready for action:

This was a great project and I am happy with the results. Plus this was a good exersize test for the upcomming Neck-Post Conversion Kit. With custom like this, alot of good older sculpted figures can be updated with a little bit of magic.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the pics.

That's awesome!  The only thing I suggest is that you add a little of the gray back into the hair (unless you're going for a younger Qui-Gon), but overall it is a very nie piece!

Hey Guys,

OK, I had some fun with the whole converting swivil heads to ball joint heads, I thought I would do some more. For today, let me ask you this,  Who here thinks the latest SA Mace Windu face looks like it got hit with the ugly stick? This head just does not look anything like Mr. Jackson as compared to the great sculpt work done during Episode 2 movie release. I had a surprise box arrive from my mother-in-law with loose figures in it (It helps that I am her favorite son-in-law ;D) and would you believe, it had just the Mace Windu figures I was planning to get on e-bay. OK, here are three different head modifications for this figure. I still have to do some painting to establish one skin tone for this figure and the heads, so I will post an update later when I have that done. But for now here are some pics.

I really like the last scupt face. I don't think the artist intended on it being used for that scene, but it looks so right. Man, that's got  to hurt.

Thanks again for the comments and enjoy the pics.
