Title: Would you buy mini Star Wars playsets copied off the Simpsons playsets?
Post by: CHEWIE on May 29, 2003, 09:55 PM
Long before the Simpsons stuff ever came out I thought that Hasbro/Kenner was missing an opportunity and should do something like this.

Think about it...

- one new figure
- awesome accessories
- small playset with a base and three walls and removable ceiling
- connects with all other small playsets
- $20 pricepoint

As long as the quality on these was nice, and no electronics were included, I think Hasbro could pull off something that we would really like.

Thoughts?

Absolutely, most definitely, without a doubt Justin!  Any freaking Star Wars playsets for that matter!  Connectable, non-connectable, whatever!  We're not all as talented as Daigo-Bah at creating a hundred different cool little mini dioramas to display our figures in, that's for sure!  So give us a little help please Hasbro!   :-*

Though I don't collect the line, I've always been very impressed with all the little Simpsons playsets that I see at the stores and have always been envious of the ability that that line has in pulling that off.  I'd love to see something similar with our line, though the evironments in the Simpsons are probably a little more conducive to pulling this off than the Star Wars line might be able to...  Great concept though!   8)

Problem - If you got them in your town, then you'd probably end up with so many of them they'd warm the shelves for years.

I think it'd be worth a try, hell, Nein made an awesome Bacta Tank dio that could be mini-playset size, but I doubt Hasbro could pull it off anywhere near as nice as Nein did.

That's an awesome idea Chewie!  I actually thought about that once, because one of my friends has every single Simpsons product ever made.  I've seen all of those playsets, and I wish Hasbro would do something like that for us Star Wars collectors.

Great idea! Also without the voice feature they could be a little bigger and have more detail like the Muppets playsets.

Quick aside:  I was just reading your similar post at RS, Chewie, and after reading a certain moderator's reply, I realized I'm so glad I found this place today.  I didn't even bother posting myself.

But to the topic:  I dig this idea.  It would be a neat way for us to get a modular Falcon, a Star Destroyer, et al.  Bring them on!

New figures? Of course I'd buy them!  :D

When Galoob offered Action Fleet Mini Scenes (http://cargobay.starwars.com/webapps/cargobay/browse/575) with figures, I couldn't help thinking THIS was the direction Hasbro should have taken the 3 3/4" line in; detailed environments with maybe one simple play feature (exploding console in the detention block, working doors, that kind of thing).

This would be a great way to round off the rest of the Cantina and Jabba's Palace aliens. New figures with little modular alcoves with chairs and tables and stuph. And other things like:

- Han Solo with Bespin Interrogation Room
- Bespin Guard with Holding Cell
- General Rieekan with Hoth Command Center
- General Madine with Rebel Briefing Room
- Luke in Dagobah Fatigues with "Vader" Tree Cave

And JesseJames' idea of a modular Hoth trench with Rebel soldier variants is perfect for this type of thing. Anyone else familiar with 21st Century's dioramas (http://www.gpxd.com/WWIIArchive/WWIIPlaySetArchive.htm) knows what Hasbro needs to do.

Count me in.

The only problem is, Luke Skywalker never went to the Quick-E Mart...

You could end up making lots of enormous environments with those as well, like a big scale cantina, Jabbas Palace, Death Star, Star Destroyer, Hoth, Tatooine, Endor, Dagobah....... etc......

There was a Quik-E Mart in Anchorhead. Coulda happened. I read that somewhere. Gotta love that EU.

Here's another definitive scene from Star Wars that could use the 21st Century treatment: The Tantive IV corridor! Think of the possibilities: A diorama for your [crappy] Rebel Fleet Troopers, a showcase for Vader's first appearance on screen, or a display for everyone's favorite robotic duo! Just make the hallway able to connect with others and you've got the guts of a Rebel Blockade Runner.

(I'm liking this thread.)

I can see I'm not the only one having a hard time accepting the truth... Hasbro is not 21st Century, and isn't smart enough to steal 21st Century's ideas/style.  :(

I already have. They were called the Death Star Trash Compactor Playsets.

I liked them a lot.

Now, if they did these with sounds or lights or something, I'd like them even more. The Simpsons playsets are REALLY cool, and I definitely don't mind buying one to get a new exclusive figure. I think it's a good system, and Star Wars should run with it for us loose collectors and diorama guys out there. We need more backgrounds like that!

The Hoth trench idea is gold.  So is the corridor.  These would be awesome.

One of the real disappoinitng things about the toy line is the lack of stuff to go along with the figures. I mean, didn't they originally make these figures so small to accomodate affordable vehicles and environments?

I can't say I'd've been any more excited about the Compactor Sets if they'd had wall-crushing sounds or dianoga wails--the sculpting was what made these sets great. The future Screen Scenes haven't really caught my eye, either, possibly because they are such small chunks of bigger scenes rather than a total environment (like the Compactor, which only needed walls to be complete.)

All that said, I could go for some rooms if they stayed in scale (Death Star Control Room, Lars Kitchen, Luke's Medical Suite on Hoth) and laid on the detail (which means no more crummy cardboard cut-out walls!) An ever-connecting Tantive IV corridor would be great, though.

Yep, Spuffy I know what you mean.  Quite often that mod likes to diss peoples' ideas.  Sometimes he rubs me the wrong way, and lately when he does that towards me or someone else I'll openly argue with him.  After a while, it just gets on my nerves.  I like it much better here anyway, and am glad you're here too.  What a fantastic forum this is.  I really enjoy it.

Man, all you guys have some great ideas.  I was going to go into detail on some ideas but it looks like you all beat me to it!  That's ok, I'll try and come up with some a little later. ;)

$10 would be a better pricepoint considering what they are doing now with the 3 3/4" figures as far as pack-ins go...I am so glad that they dumped slides, forcefiles, and chips and gave us stands that we can actually use!!!

i dunno 10 bucks seems a little too cheap for a playset in the size of a simpsons set. maybe 15 but not 10  :P
it matter not as we will never see anythign liek it... not too soon anyway.

JABBAS DAIS
comes with bib fortuna newly sculpted. maybe those giant snake kinda guys hanging in back. the frog bowl, the pipe, and a gate in the floor to the pit. but it doesn't open

WATTOS SHOP
with good watto ep1 style. molded junk pieces, and 7-10 pieces that can randomly be set up. the counter for business deals to go down. hmm maybe a chance cube  :D

It's a cool idea.  Especially if they can sell it for under $17.  There's plenty of things you could come up with for this.  Seems like it would basically be like a beefed up deluxe figure line, sans the weird action features.

Heh heh...

I don't know if it's a winning idea or not, but I'd buy it.  Especially if the Han was well articulated and was more poseable than the SAGA Endor Han.

A baby Ewok would be great, and my Endor diorama would look very cool with some Ewok corpses to go along with many Stormtroopers lying dead.
