Title: Star Wars references in other movies?
Post by: Jango Fettish on June 1, 2003, 12:20 PM
I thought this may be a fun little thread where most everyone can participate.

Star Wars references, both visual and verbal, can be found in a lot of movies and music, and if you know of one, share ONE and keep the string going!

i.e. There is a ESB Darth Vader carrying case in "Poltergeist" in front of Robbie's bed, on a shelf.

Any others? Hint: There is another Star Wars element in this exact same scene.  ;)

I think there's a Stormtrooper in there, also.

Now are we talking about visual references, verbal references, or both?  This will be a fun thread for sure.

A Darth Vader figure came to life in the movie "The Indian in the Cupboard." :)

I'll take the easy road and start with Kevin Smith movies:

Clerks:  The Death Star Conversation as well as "Chewbacca" song by supernova.

Mallrats: Silent Bob trying to use the force constantly.

Chasing Amy: The Star Wars racism speech.

Dogma:  The Muse came up with the idea for Star Wars, as well as Jay's reference to the diner being like the Cantina.

Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back: This movie is chock so full of Star Wars references (including the title) it's self explanitory.

Next:

UHF: Stanley Spudowski's mop is a lightsaber.

Can't Hardly Wait:  Two dorks playing Luke and Vader on the roof.

Swingers:  Explaining how to use that "Jedi Mind ****" on women.

Free Enterprise: It's basically a geek movie, so they have a TON of references in this one. My favorite being the scene where they go toy shopping, and some kid tells them how to say "Xixor".

I think that's enough for a first contribution.   :)

How about Spaceballs?

-- Dark Helmet
-- lightsaber rings
-- Joan River C-3P0 look-alike
-- John Candy as a dog (similar to Chewie)
-- everyone else   :P

Hmmmm...that's a parody of Star Wars though, so I don't know if it counts. If it does, then all the Fan Films should count too.  :)

However, that did remind me of another one.

DUDE where's my car. There's the guy who only talks like Yoda.   :)

Don't forget "Clerks" The Animated Series.  Jay says he's going to slice open Silent Bob Jedi style, to stay warm while they are trapped in the freezer.  (ala ESB Tauntaun)

In the Court Randall convices George Lucas to refund his $8, because EP1 was so bad.

At the end of episode 5 Silent Bob sees the spirits of Anakin, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Charles Barkley.

Oceans 11 (newer movie version)...

Matt Damon is about to go into the elevator near the end of the movie, and he has to enter in a passcode to gain access into that elevator.  The entry code was 1138.

I didn't really notice this in the movie itself, but I watched the DVD commentary done by Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Andy Garcia (which was a riot to listen BTW) and Matt mentioned it was a tribute to the famous THX-1138.  I thought that was very cool.

Just movies or does TV count? If so, then the Simpsons has a ton of SW references in it.

On to movies:

-Armageddon: where Luke Wilson and BenLo debate who's Chewie and who's Han
-ET has tons: Walrusman, Greedo, Hammerhead and Boba Fett action figures and Yoda during the Halloween scene
-Close Encounters of the Third Kind: R2 is seen on the alien mothership

Raiders:  Jock's Plane is "OB-CPO", the Artoo and Threepio hieroglyphics on a wall in the Well of Souls

Se7en:  "Just because a guy has a library card, doesn't make him Yoda."

Just a few for now, will post more later.
