Title: Guitar Hero / Rock Band
Post by: Darth Slothus on December 8, 2006, 01:35 PM
Who else loves/likes this game? Anyone not like it?
I was skeptical about playing a ridulous video game with a child-like guitar and how stupid that could be until...I tried it out; now, I'm hooked. They even now are selling flying V style guitars at retailers that are wireless to add in the fun!

My favorite song on GHII is Freezepop's-- Less Talk More Rokk. Freebird is a nice one too but extremely hard to do. I'm envious at my Lil Brother he's an expert at the game >:(. Even Wolfmothers' Woman song on the game is 'knocked out of the box' by him on expert level :P.

A fun game though ;) :D

I played the first one at a friend's earlier in the year and absolutely loved it.  I swore off buying the sequel when it came out last month, opting to wait for the 360 version instead, but then I got a gift card a week later which was too much for a regular game, and too little for anything else, so I broke down and bought GHII.

I've five-starred all of Easy and Medium, have finished Hard, and am about halfway through Expert.  Going back through and trying to five-star Hard and improve on Expert.  Favorite songs to play are War Pigs, Jessica, the second half of Free Bird, and (of course) Sweet Child.

I first played it at my Bro's pad. Once I started playing I couldn't stop..I thought I was playing against the devil...OK, not really :P.

Enlighten me - if you master Guitar Hero, does that mean you could play a real guitar?

In other words, does the guitar included with the game mimick a real guitar in regards to 'strings?'

I don't think you could play a real guitar afterwards. There's 5 different colored buttons(instead of strings) on the neck that you have to follow(sort of like Dance Dance Revolution).

I've played this at Best Buy and I like it. Im thinking about getting it for myself for Christmas.  ;D

You tell me:

Six strings and twenty-something frets compared to one "string" and five frets.  You do the math.

Put it this way:  Guitar Hero helps you learn to play guitar in the same way that Madden 2007 helps you learn to play professional football.

That's why it's what it is..a game, that's alot of fun. At least I can pretend I can play a real guitar while I'm into the game. I don't expect to even think I could play a real guitar afterwards. I read testimony from actual bands/groups that played the game and they even loved it-- and they know how to play a real guitar...know it doesn't mean it's for everyone though.

I already admitted I thought it was stupid before I tried it..I mean, look at that POS guitar..it looks like Fisher-Price made it for a video game(actually that one looks extra ****** because it doesn't have the enhancing stickers on it :-X). After I actually played the game I changed my tune. You really are only looking at the screen, not the funny guitar when you play...kinda like Kareoke with an instrument and in the Dance revolution format as Rob mentioned.

Bah.  My buddy put a couple of those cheesy stickers on his black SG, and not only were the stickers bad enough as it is, but they started peeling off after a few weeks, which made it look even worse.  So, no goofy stickers on my red SG.

No, if I ever modify mine, it'll be like something you'd see here:

Damn, I just played this game for the first time today at school. It's awesome. Although I'm debating if I should pick it up after Christmas (where it'll probably be cheaper) or have my dad teach me to play a real guitar.

I've seen it online.  It's cool, but it's third-party, which is too bad, 'cause I only get first-party stuff.

Red Octane just released this wireless model, though, for sixty bucks:

And here's the new X-Plorer model that will be coming with the 360 version sometime next year:

Not sure if that one's gonna be wireless or not, though.

I finished through Medium on GH1. I'm just not quick enough for anything more, which is fine. My friend bought GH2 and brought it over. The graphics are much better, and even have HDTV settings to accomodate for lag, etc. As far as favorite songs, "Woman" is a lot of fun, and I purchase the All That Remains and Shadows Fall songs from the shop.

The vocals for "Mother" are atrocious. Just terrible.

Don't worry Nick, I've got love for real guitars. I've been playing Guitar and Bass for about 10 years now. Currently my arsenal is a Warwick FNA 4-string, Ibanez 4-string, Fender Acoustic 4-string. Ibanez acoustic 6-string and Fender Strat 6-string...

I love the first GH but haven't gotten around to picking up the second. As to whoever said playing GH wouldn't help you on guitar, I beg to differ. While it may not teach you chords or proper fingering technique, it WILL teach you the most important aspect of guitar playing, rhythm. You can have all the training in the world but if you don't have rhythm, you don't have a leg to stand on. GH is all about rhythm and timing which are extremely crucial in playing music...

That's a good point and something I was thinking about the other day.  I do think there are probably some aspects of GH that would help out in playing a real guitar.  Rhythm and timing, as you mentioned, along with the sheer mechanics of training and coordinating your fingers (on both hands) to work together.  I still don't think it's any kind of substitute for picking up a real guitar and taking a lesson, but it certainly doesn't hurt anything, either.

I finished through Medium on GH1. I'm just not quick enough for anything more, which is fine.

The game's got a good learning curve and what seems impossible at first gets easier and easier the more that you practice/play.  I remember the first time I played the first game, also on Medium, thinking how incredibly difficult it seemed.  Then when I got the second game, I blew through Medium in just a couple of days.  So, the more you play, the better you get.

(I say this knowing full well that never in my life will I be able to five-star Buckethead's "Jordan" on Expert (http://youtube.com/watch?v=n8zfKJeGcc8).  Yeesh.)

I played the first one at a friend's earlier in the year and absolutely loved it.

Said friend's PS2 recently took a dump, and instead of replacing the system, he decided to just get rid of everything, so he sold me his copy of GH1 (along with the black guitar controller) for a song.

So I thought I'd try my hand at customizing the guitar.  Cracked it open the other day, and put it back together as soon as I realized that--hey--I didn't know the first thing about customizing up a plastic guitar.  Plus, I don't know what kind of design I want in the first place.  So I'll think about that, and when I decide on something, maybe I can hit up one of those guys from the GH forum I linked to earlier, to do it for me.

Anyway, I went back and played the first game some, to tackle all the songs that were giving me fits the first time through, and I wound up breezing through pretty much everything except for the last few songs on Expert.  So it's either that I've gotten a lot better since then, or that GH2 is much more difficult than the first game.

I think it's the latter.

Lot of fun, though.  While the second is technically the "better" game, in nearly every aspect, I think I still have more fun playing the first one, for some reason.

---

And in other GH news, the packaging for the 360 version of GH2 was recently unveiled:

Looks pretty spiffy.  And the rumors going 'round are that the "additional songs and downloadable content" will be the songs from the first game, which would be pretty cool.  It would also mean that there'd be very little reason to keep the PS2 version, if you have a 360. . .

* Dead! (My Chemical Romance)
* Hush (Deep Purple)
* Life Wasted (Pearl Jam)
* Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo (Rick Derringer)
* Possum Kingdom (Toadies)
* Salvation (Rancid)
* The Trooper (Iron Maiden)

Along with two, as-of-now unrevealed titles. . .

Activision Shreds New Details on Next Guitar Hero(TM) Game (http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20070523/LAW04723052007-1.html)

Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Come Out, the Third Installment of Guitar Hero Rocks to a Whole New Level

Activision Shreds New Details on Next Guitar Hero(TM) Game

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- After warming their amps in the basement garage to rocking sold out shows at Stonehenge, fans of Activision, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: ATVI) wildly popular Guitar Hero(TM) franchise will now be able to shred like never before with the next iteration of the game that will be available this fall. The new game will be released on the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Wii(TM) video game system from Nintendo.

Turning it up to 11, Guitar Hero fans will channel their inner rock god using Gibson Guitar's Les Paul and Kramer models as the industry standard. In addition, players will experience an incredible number of newly added features and explosive content including a new multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a bevy of exclusive unlockable content and authentic rock venues. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow axe-shredders worldwide to compete head-to-head for true legendary rock status.

While continuing to retain all the key features from their prior legendary performances, fresh downloadable content will be offered on multiple platforms, and players can now shred to a killer set list from many of the gnarliest rock songs ever recorded. Delivering more master tracks than ever before, strategic partnerships have been secured with all the major and independent music record labels and publishers to allow unrivaled access to their deep history of music catalogs, along with supplying artists' original recordings for even greater authenticity.

The initial list of face-melting awesomeness includes:

  *  Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
  *  Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
  *  Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
  *  The Metal (by Tenacious D)
  *  My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)
  *  Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
  *  Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
  *  School's Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
  *  Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat)
  *  Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)
  *  Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)

For the first time ever, Guitar Hero fans will also be able to thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform. The exclusive Gibson guitars will include innovative features such as removable faceplates that will allow fans to later personalize their guitars and make it their own, and a new button color design that will be integrated for an even greater authentic feel and rock experience. Gibson Guitar's Les Paul model will be the battle axe of choice, and an industry standard for all rock gods on the Xbox 360(TM), PLAYSTATION(R)3 system, and Wii(TM). After much anticipation, PlayStation(R)2 system fans will also be receiving a new exclusive shape as well, the classic Kramer guitar, also a Gibson brand, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics, and construction for furious finger fretting.

"The development team at Neversoft has been exceptional, and we've been able to incorporate a host of fresh new online and multi-player game play modes, along with exciting content into this version of Guitar Hero that our fans have been asking for. Also, many of the top bands and songs we've tried to get in the past are now on board, and we've definitely got some giant aces in the hole to say the least," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. "In addition, offering a new line of Gibson wireless guitars for each platform is going to truly add to the authentic rock star experience like no other."

Thoughts:

I'm in love with the song list already.  Cherub Rock?  Sabotage?  The D?  My Name is Jonas?  Knights of Cydonia?  (I've been addicted to that song as of late--listened to it a couple of times just today.)  Cult of Personality?  (I've been hoping for that one.)  Barracuda?  (Oh, hell yeah--I hated that they went with "Crazy on You" for GHII, and thought that they should have gone with Barracuda instead--and now they have.  Awesome.)  That list already kicks ass--and there's still probably thirty songs left to announce.

The only dud so far?  Paint It Black.  I was hoping they'd save that for Sitar Hero instead.  (groan)

And I've been speculating/hoping that GH3 would be packed in with wireless controllers for all platforms--and now it will.  Fantastic.  And I've been speculating/hoping that they'd do a Les Paul model--and now they will.  Terrific.

Wireless Les Paul guitar controller.  I think I just creamed my jeans.

And there were a few more songs that were recently revealed for the "Rocks the 80's" game:

    * "18 and Life" - Skid Row
    * "Bathroom Wall" - Faster Pussycat
    * "Lonely is the Night" - Billy Squier
    * "Nothing But a Good Time" - Poison
    * "Play With Me" - Extreme
    * "Shakin'" - Eddie Money
    * "Synchronicity II" - The Police

Forget Halo 3, and GTA 4, and Metal Gear, and Mario Galaxy, and whatever else--I think Christmas 2007 is gonna belong to the Guitar Hero franchise. . .

Some more GHIII info hit the net today:

Guitar Hero III Hands-on (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/792/792801p1.html)

A couple of videos showing the new (different) look:

First Guitar Hero III videos are ... different (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/31/first-guitar-hero-iii-videos-are-different/)

And the first look at the new Les Paul-style guitar:

Guitar Hero Les Paul Controller Impressions (http://gear.ign.com/articles/792/792876p1.html)

That's a non-playable prototype, and it looks a little funky with the all-white faceplate, but there will be removable faceplates, which I'm sure will look more Les Paul-ish.

Other new stuff on the guitar:

*Detachable neck - not only for ease of storage and travel, but also for possible double-neck extensions in the future
*Totally wireless
*Two different strap knob positions
*Toned-down fret button colors for a more-realistic look

The real reason probably has to do with money.  You know, smaller package means less material and freight.  Fit more on the shelf too.

That's a really good point and you're probably right on the money.  The boxes for the other guitars are huge, and they'd be able to save a considerable amount of space (and money) by shipping the guitars in two pieces.

Rock band will be sick, 10 frets?? Awesome apparently the extra frets are for solos :D

The Stratocaster controller will have 5 additional fret buttons located further down the neck to be used in special solo sections. Additionally, the controller will feature an effects pickup switch. Harmonix has confirmed Guitar Hero guitar controllers will be compatible with the game, as well as other third-party guitar controllers. The company has also said that Rock Band will also support the use of additional third-party controllers, and, should Activision (the current publishers of Guitar Hero) request it, they can make the Rock Band guitar controller work with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.[citation needed]

Rock Band's microphone instrument will be similar to the model used in the Harmonix-developed Karaoke Revolution games. According to an article in Game Informer, "Vocalists sing along to the rock tunes as they always have. Additionally, a phoneme detector will pick up the individual vowels and consonants." The microphone can also be used as a tambourine and cowbell when there are no vocals.

The drum controller is similar to the DrumMania arcade game, and will be based on striking one of 4 foam pads, representing the snare drum, tom-tom, hi-hat, and crash/ride cymbals. The set will also feature a kick pedal for bass drum and will ship with a pair of authentic drumsticks. The legs of the drum peripheral can adjust in height or be detached if the user wishes to place it on a table-top, while the kick pedal can be adjusted laterally. Harmonix representatives have said on numerous occasions that "If you can play the drum parts on hard, you can pretty much play the drums [in reality]."

Can't wait to pick this up  :D

If this one sells the way the last one sold, I think they'll still squeak by. . .  (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif)

They could make more profit if they shipped it in a smaller package, that is all.

That's true, but by the same token, I'm sure they don't mind the extra visibility at retail that the enormous packaging provides, especially with the competition they'll have this Christmas, in the form of Rock Band.

And speaking of Rock Band, ten new tracks were revealed recently (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/rock-band-to-perform-on-ps2-hits-europe-in-2008/).

So here's Rock Band's confirmed track-listing so far:

1960s
"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones

1970s
"Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who
"Mississippi Queen" by Mountain (non-original recording)
"Suffragette City" by David Bowie
"Paranoid" by Black Sabbath (non-original recording)
"Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult
"Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones
"Highway Star" by Deep Purple

1980s
"Tom Sawyer" by Rush (non-original recording)
"Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi
"Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash
"Epic" by Faith No More

1990s
"Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters
"Enter Sandman" by Metallica
"In Bloom" by Nirvana
"Vasoline" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Say It Ain't So" by Weezer
"Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Sabotage" by Beastie Boys

2000s
"Main Offender" by The Hives
"Go With the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age
"Reptilia" by The Strokes
"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet
"Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
"The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails

There's a little bit of overlappage there with GH3:  Cherub Rock, Mississippi Queen, Sabotage, and Paranoid.

And you may want to wait and see how this whole GH III/Rock Band thing shakes out over the next couple of months, too--'cause they both have pretty impressive song lists of their own.

As far as guitars go, the Gibson SGs that are packed in with GH and GH II are pretty much identical, except for color.  Both are wired.

I can't comment on Red Octane's wireless PS2 guitar (http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802556), as I haven't used it.

There will be a new wireless guitar packed in with GH III, the Kramer Pacer (http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802724).  I haven't heard too much about that one yet, but the guys at ScoreHero (a big GH fansite) got to try out the new wireless Les Paul controllers (for the next-gen systems) and seemed to think that they were much-improved over the wired SG controllers.  The same may be true for the PS2-exclusive Kramer, I don't know.

There will also be a Fender Stratocaster controller packed in with Rock Band, but that's all I know about it.

The new guitars may be another good reason (along with the new songs) to wait and see what happens with the new games this fall.  But if you don't care about that stuff, and are itching to get started, you can't really go wrong with the GH II bundle (I don't know if the first bundle is available anywhere anymore--probably not).

Amazon's got the GH II bundle for $69.99 right now with free shipping - I believe it sells for $79.99 everywhere else.  Not a bad deal at all.

I don't think so. The pics I saw of the RB Strat had 2 sets of 5 buttons, a low set and a high set. Now this could be for kids/adults but then again it could be to make the game more challenging...

The Gibson SG controllers will be compatible with Rock Band, yes.  (Which makes sense, since those games were all done by the same developer.)  So if you bought the GH II bundle today, the guitar should work with Rock Band.

We don't know if the Fender Strat included with Rock Band will work with any of the GH games, and we don't know if the new Les Paul/Kramer guitars included with GH III will work with the other GH games or Rock Band.    I'm kind of assuming that they'll probably all work together, but you never know.

Nope.

I am taking your advice and waiting it out.

Actually, I'm thinking now might be the time to pull the trigger on a new console....my PS2 is acting pretty ****** these days - it won't play games that aren't on DVD's.

Time for a PS3?

I bought my Ps2 in 01 and it stopped playing the CD games in 03.  It still plays the DVD games and movies well, but there's some vertical lines that show through on the left side of my screen when I play a game/movie.  It might be nice to someday own a "real" DVD player.

I'm waiting another year or two for the prices to fall again, though the Wii is quite tempting.

...Oh and Guitar Hero looks like a blast   :)

RUINER -

BILL posted this over on RS.

20% off coupon for Kmart this week (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=23347)

Don't know if you have a KMart in your area, but using the 20% off coupon on the 40GB PS3 priced at $399 will cost you $319 only.  Also, the 80GB PS3 for $499 would only be $399, the price of the 40GB PS3.

Don't forget the 40GB PS3 does not play PS2 games tho.

Sure, but everyone always complains about the price of the PS3 as the reason not to buy one.  $399 for a 80GB is the cheapest ever for the biggest version of the PS3.

Yeah, but you can play Guitar Hero III on PS3, right?  Therefore, you can gain the prestigious title of "Guitar Hero" on PS3!  Wow!  Just think how impressive that looks on a resume, especially if you do it with the Fender and Gibson controller!  You'll definitely be ready for Rock Band then, right?!?!

That used to be true (about six months ago).  There is more than plenty of exclusive games now and coming out in the next few months.  Warhawk, Sword, and as of today, Uncharted, are all worth playing.

I tried the game at Best Buy.  It's really silly if you already know how to play guitar.  In fact, it seems very counter-intuitive if you already know how to play guitar.  Witness me trying to play "Surrender" by Cheap Trick on Guitar Hero, a song I've jammed on numerous times.  Hell, I've even been paid to play that song.  But can I play it on this stoopid game?  Of course not.

Feh.  I'll stick to playing for actual audiences in bars and clubs...not in my living room.

Next purchases will probably be COD4 and GHIII and/or Rock Band.  I may be able to score Mass Effect cheap--if I can, I'll probably pick it up.  Halo and Gears too.

That's from another thread.  I thought you already had GHIII or is this in reference to a different system than what you normally play on?

As an aside, Guitar Hero and Rock Band continue to fly off the shelves in my neighborhood.  I've been in Walmart a couple of mornings looking for stupid comic packs and have seen new stock of both games which are gone by the following mornings.  It's just not dying down at all.

No sir.  Have GH and GH2 on PS2; was holding off on GH3 until I had a 360.  Now I have a 360, should be picking up GH3 pretty soon.

I'd still like to grab GH: Rocks the 80's for PS2 sometime, but not until there's some kind of price drop on it.  I refuse to pay full price for what's essentially an expansion pack.

Will probably also pick up GH2 for the 360 eventually, as well, for the exclusive and/or downloadable tracks.

I didn't know I had ever aligned myself with Sony/PS3.

Nah, I'm pretty much console agnostic--I go where the games are.  Right now, the games are on 360, so that's where I went.  But I'll more than likely get a PS3 eventually, when more good exclusive games come out for it (I'm looking at you, God of War 3) and the price drops a little (okay, a lot).

I don't think you did.  I just made the assumption you'd move to PS3 given you had GHII on PS2.  But really no need.  So essentially just a bad assumption on my part.

I'm basically non-committal to the platforms since I'm too cheap to own many.  I picked up the PS2 because of the games for my daughter (DDR, High School Musical) and this way I could get the older GH games as well, rather than just being able to go with GHIII. I'm in the same boat with 80s.  I have I-III and lots of room to improve, so no need to get it until it's about half price.
Title: Re: Guitar Hero

So what's happening with the PS2 and GHIII?

When the game was first released, there was a mad rush to get the controllers and game.  I saw all the platforms and they all sold out quickly.

Prior to Christmas you could find all the platforms off and on if you're timing was right, though the closer you got to Christmas the more impossible it became.  Quite reasonable and expected.

Since Christmas I've seen all of the controllers out there except for PS2.  The PC version is the most obvious since it seems to sell less.  XBox has been around a fair bit too.  Hardly see the PS3 version and almost never see the Wii version, but you do see them.  But I haven't seen a PS2 controller since about three weeks before Christmas.  I can rationalize that it's probably the largest platform for the game since GHI and GHII came out on PS2 so that's where the most games currently exist are.  I can also accept they might want to switch production to the newer platforms Xbox/PS3/Wii for the game.  What I'm finding just a bit odd is that there simply aren't any PS2 showing up at all.  Did they stop production for it or is it that they just disappear that quickly when they arrive?

“Having a game built around Aerosmith has been a huge honor and really a great experience for us,” says Joe Perry. “We’ve put a lot of ideas into the game so that fans can have fun interacting with our music, getting inside our body of work and learning about the band’s history.”

Steven Tyler says, “Any band that can go from ‘Don’t Want to Miss A Thing’ (Aerosmith’s #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking ‘Sweet Emotion’ to the cheekiness of ‘Love in an Elevator,’ to the classic ballad ‘Dream On’ shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies.”

Perry adds, “On a larger scale, it’s cool for us to be pioneers helping to rebuild the music industry through a format like video games. It’s great for rock since the record companies are struggling to make sense of how things are changing. Fans want to get and experience music in new formats--and there are going to be some of them who will play the game, then pick up the guitar for real and start bands. It’s what’s happening now, and it’s only going to build more momentum in the future. It’s a massive change for the music business.”

“We are extremely excited that Aerosmith chose to team up with Guitar Hero, bringing one of the world’s all-time best-selling artists together with one of the biggest video game brands, to deliver a new and unique interactive way for our customers to connect with artists and their music,” said Dusty Welch, head of publishing for Activision/RedOctane. “This partnership will give Aerosmith, a band that has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, a powerful and innovative platform to reach their fans and new audiences.”

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith brings these quintessential rock legends to the interactive realm to create the ultimate gaming experience. As fans progress through their careers in the game, they can rock out to scores of Aerosmith’s greatest hits, as well as songs from celebrated artists that the band has either performed with or has been inspired by in some way. Venues from historical moments during the band’s illustrious career offer the experience of “sweet emotion” and further capture the essence of the band’s rise to fame.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. The Wii™ version is being developed by Vicarious Visions. The PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system version is being developed by Budcat. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB.

Aerosmith plugs into 'Guitar Hero' popularity
By Mike Snider, USA TODAY

Two years ago, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry came home and found his youngest son, Roman, now 16, playing Guitar Hero with friends. "I played it a little bit and said, 'This is fantastic. Does it have any Aerosmith songs on it?' " Perry says. "The first game didn't, and I was hugely (upset)."
Perry may have been playing the blues then, but no more. The first one-band edition of the game, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, is due in June for PlayStation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. GH: Aerosmith (about $50) will track the history of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, who have sold 100 million-plus albums.

"It's got our whole career, from the first place we ever played as a band, Nipmuc High School (in 1970, about 40 miles from Boston) to the (2001) Super Bowl halftime show," says lead singer Steven Tyler. "It's 30 years of the legend of Aerosmith and where we played to get where we are."

GH: Aerosmith is based on the technology of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which has sold 6 million copies in its first four months. The $820 million in Guitar Hero sales for 2007 set a U.S. industry record. The GH franchise has sold more than 15.6 million copies worldwide of the games that let you strum and hit note buttons on a guitar-shaped controller as tracks play on-screen.

Aerosmith can be played by one or two players, who start out as Perry and can unlock guitarist Brad Whitford and bass player Tom Hamilton. The entire band did motion-capture sessions so screen images would be realistic. (Beyond Aerosmith, some opening acts will appear in the game, as well as some special guests — think Run-D.M.C.)

"It's a cartoon, but it's got all my movements and Steven's movements," Perry says. "You can tell it's Joey (Kramer) playing the drums."

Aerosmith members took their motion-capture sessions seriously, says Chris Parise, the senior producer on the game for developer Neversoft. "People get a feel for what going to an actual Aerosmith concert is really like," he says. "It is pretty authentic."

Aerosmith seemed destined to connect with Neversoft. As the game developer was fine-tuning Guitar Hero III, company president Joel Jewett was listening to the cover version of Aerosmith's Same Old Song and Dance and said the cover singer "didn't sound like Steven Tyler," said the game's lead designer, Alan Flores. "So we went back to get the original master, and in one day Joe Perry found out about it and was super-excited. He got the masters, and that sort of established the relationship."

About the same time, the game's development team began researching ways to expand the hit franchise. It surveyed Guitar Hero buyers and non-gamers, too, about which musical artists they liked and which ones might they be interested in playing a game about. "Aerosmith was consistently one of the top selected bands not only by (Guitar Hero) owners but also by the mass audience that is not an owner," says Dusty Welch of the game's publisher, RedOctane. Welch spent eight years at Activision before it acquired RedOctane in 2006.

The band had the headliner qualities they were looking for, Welch says: a respected lead guitarist, a charismatic frontman and a multiplatinum, globally appealing playlist.

"Aerosmith has demonstrated this resiliency and relevance that spans many decades," he says.

Aerosmith, which also has a new album in the works, hopes to benefit from the effect Guitar Hero has on music sales. Every Guitar Hero III song tracked by Nielsen SoundScan (62 of 70) saw an increase in digital download sales the week ending Dec. 30, when many who got the game as a gift were playing it.

Downloads of relative newcomer DragonForce's Through the Fire and Flames, selling fewer than 2,000 weekly, rose to more than 10,000 after GH III's release and approached 40,000 the week ending Dec. 30. Aerosmith earned a more modest increase on its Same Old Song and Dance, which rose to 2,041 from 374 copies the previous week.

To boost online sales, iTunes has a Guitar Hero store with collections from the original artists and WaveGroup, the music studio that created the many cover tracks used in the games. (iTunes also has a section devoted to songs in the similar game Rock Band).

Also out: an 11-track Guitar Hero III soundtrack CD.

Video games, Perry says, will "be one of the ways people are going to get their music. Guitar Hero works on so many levels. It break down a lot of barriers."

To promote GH: Aerosmith, the band's first single, 1973's Dream On, will be available for GH III players to download for free via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Some day, the band could release new music through the game, Perry says: "It would make sense."

Eventually selling music tracks online, Welch says, "is part of the next evolution."

Well I like Aerosmith.  I actually like them quite a bit.  But I'm not sure that I really want to pay that much money just to get a game based entirely on them :-\  I like the variety on the current game setup.  There are songs on there I've seldom or never heard before and have grown to like them.  That makes them more interesting than a game based on a group whose music I already own all of.

I agree with this, very much.  I like Aerosmith too (well, at least the 70's Aerosmith), but not enough to pay fifty bucks for *just* Aerosmith tracks--especially if a bunch of the tracks are their 90's and 00's garbage.  I'll treat this like the PS2 Rocks the 80's game--once it gets down to between $20-30, I'll bite.  In the meantime, I will enjoy "Dream On" for free, though.   :)

Also, rumor has it that a similar game based upon The Band With One Good Song may be due out this year, as well. . .

U2 is a strange choice for guitar hero.  Great band by most people's measure, though I'm not the biggest fan.  But not a band that screams guitar to me.

Sorry but going with just a solitary band is going to leave me not buying the stuff at all.

I'd rather them not put out single band Guitar Hero so they could put some better content to download on XBL. Rock Band has gotten alot of good downloads and yet Guitar Hero hasn't had many. I will however download "Dream On".

Yup, it does.  But I still wouldn't buy it until it hit the $20-30 mark.  I'm just not interested in single band versions of the game.  I do think they'd be much better served taking those songs to a download situation where you can go get tons of a particular band's songs at a cost if you want them.  Leave future releases for mixed compilations and let the obsessive fans get what they want too.  As a PS2 owner, I'd be kinda screwed on the download aspect but that's ok, I'll live.  I'm already annoyed by not getting Dream On and would be miffed to not get more of the Aerosmith and Metallica stuff but if I really want it, I guess I can upgrade to a PS3 system.  Or Xbox.

I wouldn't be interested in single-band games from any band, not even my favorites.  It'd get too monotonous, and I think a big part of the appeal of the series is the variety of all the different bands and types of music.  I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a Metallica game, but definitely not at full price--$20 or $30 tops.  I'd really rather have all that stuff as downloadable content and not separate discs.

That said, this got a bit lost in the shuffle in all that news last week:

Now what exactly that means, as far as ratio of Aerosmith tracks to non-Aerosmith tracks, nobody knows at this point.  But that makes it a little more appealing, to me anyway.

(And Brent, you're not missing much with "Dream On."  It's super-easy and it's a 2007 re-recording, not even the original.  And on that note, I've heard that all the old 70's masters may be lost, so it could very well be that whatever "classic" Aerosmith tracks we get in the new game may be new re-recordings.)

(Although, "Same Old Song and Dance" was the original master track, I do believe. . .)

Amazon has the game-only, 360 version of Rock Band on sale for $34.99 today (well, for the next several hours, anyway).  It usually sells for $59.99.  Great deal if you've already got one of the GH games (and guitars) for the 360.

I went ahead and snagged it.  I've been wanting to get Rock Band but couldn't decide whether I should buy the big-ass bundle, or if I should buy everything separately.  But this was just too good a deal to pass up.  I'll probably pick up the drums later on, but I don't care about the mic, and I've already got the Les Paul guitar controller, which I like a lot more than the Strat controller that comes with Rock Band.  Much better deal for me than buying the bundle.

Well, that sucks.

But isn't it good to know that, as a NIN fan, when you are able to download **** for videogames, that all the NIN tracks are on Rock Band, and not Guitar Hero?  And I didn't know this, but there's a NIN track ("The Hand That Feeds") that's already in the game (i.e. non-downloadable).

I only mention this because before, you were having trouble on deciding on which game to go with--I'd think the NIN tracks would tip the scales in RB's favor.

I just want the guitar - I don't need the microphone or drums.

Separate wireless Fender guitar controllers are due out next month for the 360 and PS3 for $60 each.  Not sure what's going on with the PS2 stuff.

Or another route would be to buy the bundle, keep the game and guitar, and eBay the mic and drums.  Doesn't look like any of the pieces are available separately for the PS2, so I bet the mic and the drums (especially) go for a decent amount, probably to people with the game only Rock Band and one of the GH SG guitars.

I'm having a lot of fun with Rock Band, but I've kind of flown through the guitar stuff so far.  I'm looking forward to getting the drums at some point, which will be a hell of a challenge and I'm sure will make it seem like an entirely new game to me.

A quick follow-up:

Quote
The manufacturer's product listing for the game includes the songs "Dream On", "Make It", "Mama Kin", and "Movin' Out"[10] (all from their 1973 debut album) as well as an "original composition by Joe Perry"[10], though all of this information was later removed from the site. The tag line for the game (as it is seen on the official game site) also suggests that the song "Walk This Way" will also be included.[5] Other songs include "Sweet Emotion", "Draw the Line", "Uncle Salty", "No Surprize", and "Kings and Queens"[11]. Guitarist Joe Perry has stated that the game will include "30 or 40" songs.[9] The game will also include tracks from bands that Aerosmith has either played with or that have been a source of inspiration to their music, including Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes", The Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night", Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You", and Cheap Trick's "Dream Police"[11]. Other artists include Lenny Kravitz, The Black Crowes, Run-D.M.C., Stone Temple Pilots[12][10], Deep Purple, and The White Stripes.[13]

This might not suck so bad, after all. . .
Title: Re: Guitar Hero
Post by: Morgbug on March 26, 2008, 05:32 PM
That's a lot more promising for sure.  I'm liking that Dream On is included as well, but the other bands aspect is the most appealing part.  Any word on a new controller?  I'm still sitting with just one and getting this with a second controller has more appeal right now as the black PS2 controller isn't available without the game and I have the white stand alone controller.

As an update of my sucky progress on the game, here's where I'm at in the various games I own:

GHI - 27/30 songs on hard done; 23/30 on expert
GHII - stuck in level 6 on hard and only three songs on expert
GHIII - stuck in level 6 on hard and 21 songs done in expert

I like GHII the least of the three sets I own; GHI is probably my favorite for the songs.  I will happily say I've come to love some songs I don't think I was at all aware of prior to playing the game.  Oh and Queens of the Stone Age are the bane of my existence.

Look out:  Charlie Daniels is pissed. (http://www.charliedaniels.com/soapbox-2008-040408.htm)

Quote
I had a rude awakening recently when I looked at a video game.

It was called Guitar Hero and is wildly popular with the younger set. I heard they had used one of my songs but I hadn't seen it until recently and when I did I was in for some unpleasant surprises.

The game features a rock band playing heavy metal covers of different songs and enables the player to become part of the band, pushing colored buttons on a faux guitar neck which correspond with colors going by on the screen as the song plays.

Actually the game really has a dark side complete with grotesque monsters on stage with the band, strange, eerie lighting effects and all manner of weird things popping up on the stage.

To tell you the truth the whole thing bothered me and struck me as something that is not the healthiest thing in the world for young, impressionable minds to be exposed to, but the thing that really got me was what they had done with my song.

The song, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia," which I wrote, is supposed to be a lighthearted novelty about a fiddling contest between a country boy and the devil and the devil always loses.

That is not the case with the Guitar Hero version which comes complete with a horned, guitar-playing devil who battles the player and very often wins.

I want any of you parents out there whose children have this game to know that I did not grant these people my permission to pervert my song and am disgusted with the result.

Unfortunately I lost the publishing rights on the song many years ago in a settlement with a former partner and the license to Guitar Hero was granted by the company who now owns the publishing.

I would never grant permission for some company to create a video game version of a song I wrote in which the devil wins a contest and I'm sorely disappointed with the company who owns the copyright for not policing the situation. As it is they have allowed these people to violate the very essence of the song.

At this time I don't know if I have any legal recourse, probably not, but I wanted you folks to know that I vehemently disagree with what has been done to a piece of my work. And would like to pass along a little advice to parents of young children.

This game looks innocent enough but if you have a child who is playing it, take the time to sit with him or her while they're playing along and take a serious look at the images on the screen.

You may be surprised at the world they're being exposed to.

Pray for our troops

What do you think?

God Bless America

We've seen the guitars up at Walmart in Canada for a couple of weeks now.  Turns out I could have made some money on the Wii guitars as we were pretty much the first to see the stand alone packaging at retail it seems.

I'd be happy if they'd release a different stand alone guitar for the PS2 but I guess I'll wait for the Aerosmith package this summer.  Not that far off now and I'm still not done hard on GHIII.   :-\

Any news on tracks other than what you posted back in late March?

I'm kind of assuming the Run-D.M.C song would be Walk This Way.  Still hoping for more diversity than just the bands listed.  Figuring on 8 levels, one Aerosmith song per level would be fine by me, filling out the other 32 songs with other bands would be ideal.

Format looks to be two songs by other bands followed by three Aerosmith songs.  Repeat.

Aerosmith ~ "Make It"
Aerosmith ~ "Uncle Salty"

In addition to the artists above, the game is expected to include tracks from Lenny Kravitz, The Black Crowes, Run-D.M.C., Stone Temple Pilots[16][14], Deep Purple and The White Stripes.[17] The game is reported to have "about 60 percent Aerosmith and 40 percent artists that either inspired Aerosmith, played with Aerosmith, or are liked by Aerosmith."

Thanks.

I expect I'll be buying it anyway, though I was hoping for a little less Aerosmith than that, more from other bands.  As I've said earlier, I just don't think that going predominantly with a single band for the most part is going to be my preferred format.  Whether it's Metallica, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin or anyone else.  I just like the diversity of the songs from the earlier formats.  I'm already an Aerosmith fan and have most of their music in my library.  The earlier GH games have caused me to go out and buy music from bands I'd either never heard of or just didn't own any of.  Isn't that a positive thing?

Looks like I'll go with the wireless Kramer bundle this time around so I have two guitars (finally).

I think I'm in, too.  The game seems like it's turning out to be better than it originally sounded.  I wouldn't be interested in paying $60 for the game by itself, but I was wanting a second Les Paul controller anyway, and those are around $70 by themselves, so if you spend $100 for the bundle, that's kind of like the game's only about $30, which is about what I was wanting to spend for it anyway.  So, using that logic, it works out.

And here's a better look at the new faceplate:

GHIV recipe will add a pinch of Rock Band (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/04/22/ghiv-recipe-will-add-a-pinch-of-rock-band/)

Quote
Talking to Conde Nast Portfolio magazine, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick mentioned that Guitar Hero IV will "include a lot of other instruments" including a microphone for vocals. Hence the Rock Band comparison. Kotick also mentioned that GHIV will be the "first game we've had in which we can use local content and local bands", possibly allowing them to release local band DLC to select markets.

So, there you have it. Guitar Hero IV (not the Aerosmith edition, that's something entirely separate) will feature additional instruments and local content while still retaining the Guitar Hero name.

I received Rock Band as an early Father's Day gift this weekend.  I have to say, I like the guitar on this one better than my GH version.  Also found the songs on Rock Band easier to play on the same level than those on GH.

Nice selection of songs though and my wife and daughter are both enjoying playing the drums.  The only one who should be singing is my daughter.  :-X

Ouch.

But I got some nifty stickers with it.   ;D ::)

And if you haven't bought it, don't.  31 songs plus 7 or so bonus songs.  I've made it through medium and hard already, halfway done expert without failing a song.  A preponderance of HOPOs which is sort of interesting and sort of annoying.  I like Aerosmith, a lot, but there's no way this isn't a ripoff at full price.

Too little, too late for GH with the drums?  I can't see myself buying another setup for the drum kit (and microphone?).  Rock band is satisfactory for that purpose and it's good for the family.  With that track listing for RB2, I'm in and happy with the range of songs.  It did remind me there was a lot of crap in the 1980s though ;)

Have you guys heard of the free PC version of Guitar Hero called Guitar Zero?  It's a free clone of the game that lets you import GH tracks and create new songs using your mp3s. There is also one called Frets on Fire that works the same way. You can even use a wired Xbox 360 controler or regular joypad or keyboard.

Tool has confirmed (http://www.toolband.com/index_frames.html) its participation with Guitar Hero Wold Tour.

Quote
A few minutes ago I found out from the band's management that we're now cleared to announce TOOL's participation with GUITAR HERO. Here's part of the press release:

"Hugely popular alternative metal band Tool, known for their epic, intense musical arrangements and killer visual arts, will also soon be known for their contribution to the upcoming Guitar Hero® World Tour. Guitar Hero fans from all over the world will be able to rock out to "Parabola" and Grammy-award winning "Schism" from Tool's critically-acclaimed 2001 album Lateralus in addition to "Vicarious" from their 2006 Grammy-award winning album 10,000 Days. The game will also feature an all-new venue designed in collaboration with the band and highlighting the art style that has become a staple in their music videos, live shows and album artwork."

I was able to pre-order rockband for the PS2 today used for $85, now I just have to pick it up. Just a question though, how much does the rock band kit sell for new? I am asking just because the same store I preo-ordered rockband from is also the one I am going to this weekend to return my old GH guitar because of problems that occured with it (wouldnt connect) but at the same time according to the store manager it wasnt thre fault as all those guitars they sold had the same problem. Plus I have never had any problems with all the other games/movies I have purchased from them. i just want to know how much of a difference it would be to buy it new as a just in case.

And yes I realize the irony in the fact that I hated the drum kit for rockband and wanted the new guitar hero one BUT i have a feeling it will be very expensive and I just dont have the money to pay (and this is just a guess) $180 for a video game kit. And either way I can see the PS2 version getting ripped off the same way that the aero smith game did.

on another note just one more song till I beat GH3 on Hard..Slayer lol

Closing Comments
Rock Band 2 improves in several areas over the original. The track list is better, the difficulty has been bumped up, it's more accessible, all previously released DLC works from the get-go, and Battle of the Bands is a brilliant online mode. But there's no getting around the fact that almost nothing was done to the main mode, World Tour. This is still the primary feature of Rock Band and yet it seems to have been neglected. It's hard to notice the newness when there's a big chunk of game that is just the same as it ever was.

That said, music game fans would be absolutely crazy not to buy Rock Band 2. Even if you hate a few of the songs on disc, you are still getting an incredible deal. It's less than a dollar a song, with an extra 20 free DLC coming in the next couple of months. That's just too good to pass up.

And here's something which I've found to be pretty handy in determining what instruments work with what games for what consoles:

The Rock Band 2 bundles will be released tomorrow for the 360 and PS3.  Looks like $189.99 everywhere.  At Best Buy, you get a free "Kick Drum Shade" with purchase of the bundle.  No idea what that is, exactly.  The disc-only RB2 will also be released tomorrow for the PS3, at the typical price of $59.99.  Not sure if there are any freebies anywhere for that one.

Looks like the Wii and PS2 versions of Rock Band 2 will be hitting retail exactly a month from today.

And, a week from tomorrow, Guitar Hero: World Tour will be released across most of the major platforms.  Similar pricing, I think:  $60/game only, $100 game/guitar, $190/guitar-drums-mic, at least for the 360 and PS3 versions.  The Wii and PS2 versions may be a little cheaper.

This is where I (sort of) regret having bought the PS2.  Granted it was dirt cheap and for a year now it has been all I need.  With the rumors of the XBox being replaced within a year, I'll probably ride it out too.

Gonna be annoying knowing everyone is a month ahead on RB2/GHWT but I'll live with it for now.  I won't buy the drum kit for GH this time around and we have the full set for RB so we're ok there.

Still waiting on Rock the 80s to come down in price. ::)

Do they still sell the original Rock Band Drum Set in stores? I'm having trouble finding one.

GH: Metallica looks like a must buy for me.

And lo and behold, PS2 version of GH: World Tour is available today.   ???  I guess it's just Rock Band that's delaying that release for a month and not GH.  I may have to break down and buy a Wii to make the transition to the next level.

Weird aspect to GH/WT: if you are stuck on a song in a particular level, you can go down a level and beat it and it will let you proceed within the section of songs you are in.  Also odd that until you've completed a gig you cannot replay a song you've passed until you pass all the songs.  Also once you've completed a set it appears to be open on the next level up as well (finished on hard, expert available).  All this on the PS2 version and only with respect to guitar.

Visuals are a hybrid of GH and RB with way more female characters now in the bands.  None as sexy as the one with blue hair in RB1 mind you.

Not sure if the game is easier or not but I'm 87% through.  I only cheated on Assassin otherwise have played all on hard level.  Finished first set on expert too and a couple of other random songs.

So I got World Tour the other day, and I've got one or two sets left to do on Hard.  So far, I'm finding it to be pretty easy to nail 4 and 5 starts on pretty much every song on Hard.

But I'm reading that there are some pretty good songs that you can unlock (Welcome to the Jungle, Master of Puppets etc...) but it sounds like a lot of trouble to unlock them the real way.

I dug around for a few minutes for cheat codes and didn't find any - does anyone have any or know of a way to unlock the hidden songs?

Guitar Hero 1,2, 80's and 3 are all marked down at Targets to $19.99.  Aerosmith and World Tour are still at full price.

So now that we have the AC/DC track pack and possible Beatles (whom I love as a band but would find this pretty boring) when are they going to get the Led out?  Or Maiden?  We need more guitar driven tracks.

Also, any rumors of any Floyd, Tesla or Hendrix songs on the way?

. . .possible Beatles (whom I love as a band but would find this pretty boring)

Ignoring what I supposedly said in this very thread way back on February 19th (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14442.msg351085#msg351085), I'm psyched about the Beatles game.  Harmonix has something special with that license and I'm sure they'll deliver.

Don't know (or care) much about Maiden, but Zeppelin probably won't be happening any time soon:

Quote
. . .But some bands have resisted the call of the new medium. Led Zeppelin's thundering riffs are among the most sought after by music game makers, but the group's guitarist, Jimmy Page, and his bandmates have repeatedly turned down offers from both Activision and MTV, says Peter Mensch, a partner at Q Prime Management, which manages Mr. Page, along with Metallica and other acts.

The sticking point: The band isn't comfortable with the prospect of granting outsiders access to its master tapes, a necessary step in creating the games. "It ain't about the money," Mr. Mensch says.

No idea on Floyd or Tesla, but "Purple Haze (live)" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are already in GH World Tour.  In addition, there was a Hendrix track pack released a few weeks ago for GH WT which consists of "If 6 Was 9," "Little Wing" and a live version of "Fire" from Woodstock.

Wii Won't Receive All Guitar Hero DLC Due to Bundle 'Restrictions' (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55957)

Quote
"Technical or licensing restrictions" will prevent Wii owners from receiving all of the Guitar Hero World Tour downloadable content that PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players can access, publisher Activision Blizzard has revealed.

As the Wii's online Shop Channel lacks the ability to bundle multiple downloads into one purchase--the store only allows songs to be sold individually--some downloadadable content, such as last week's Jimi Hendrix Track Pack, will not be available on Wii.

"Certain artists prefer to keep the integrity of the track pack rather than releasing singles," Activision Blizzard told MTV Multiplayer, referencing the Hendrix pack.

Bottom line, America Canada:  The Wii is balls when it comes to downloadable content in Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

I don't know, but there is this (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53952):

Quote
Activision and hardware manufacturer Logitech today announced a partnership to develop and market "premium" instrument controllers for the console editions of Guitar Hero World Tour. The peripherals are set to roll out after the title's release later this year.

The only GH peripheral up on Logitech's site right now is a $250 (!) guitar for the PS2 and PS3 only (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/playstation_3/controllers/devices/5048&cl=us,en?WT.ac=mb|5163||hp&creative=11277|wireless_controller).

But in the meantime, why not pick up one of the Rock Band drum sets?  They're fully compatible with GHWT.

I've only played the first RB set so I'm afraid I'm not well-informed enough to have an opinion.

But I'm in kind of the same boat--I want a drum set, but am trying to find out which one works the best for the opposing game.  Haven't found a whole lot of direct comparisons on them yet from people who have played both sets.  They both seem to have their pros and cons, almost offsetting each other to the point of it being a wash.  I'm leaning towards the new RB2 set as being the one to go with.  From what I've gathered, they've made some improvements to it which makes it worth the $40 difference in price between the old and new sets.

Quote
The second version of the controller, distributed with Rock Band 2, introduced quieter, "velocity sensitive" drum pads, a reinforced kick pedal, wireless capabilities, and compatibility with separately-sold cymbals.

As far as the GH drums go, though, I don't know.  Sure would be nice if they would sell those separately to give people another option.  Maybe this deal with Logitech is responsible for that, who knows.

Went on a music-game tear since the last time I was here.

Two weeks ago, Target had RB2 (disc-only) on sale for $44.  I went to get it price-matched at Best Buy for the Reward Zone points.  BB was doing a thing where RZ members would get a $10 gift card with RB2.  So the cashier gives me the price match and gives me the gift card on top of that.

Last week, BB had a coupon for RZ members to get $20 off various Guitar Hero bundles.  They had the GH: Aerosmith bundle priced at $50, so I went and grabbed one of those.  Then I used my $10 gift card from the week before, so I snagged the Aerosmith game (with guitar) for $22.50 total.

Then I went to Wal-Mart and picked up their exclusive AC/DC Rock Band Track Pack.  They had recently marked it down to $30 (it was originally $40).  But they had a "gift set" available for the same price, which includes the game, along with a live AC/DC DVD, and an AC/DC t-shirt, so I got all that stuff for $30.

I know I've said before that I'm not too keen on the one-band-oriented music games, and I'm still not (with the exception of next year's Beatles game), but I don't feel too bad about these.  The Aerosmith bundle was a steal for $23, and the AC/DC game is cool because all of those tracks can be exported into Rock Band or Rock Band 2.  I'm planning on selling the gift set off once I get those tracks exported.

GH: Metallica?  Great Googly Moogly.   :o

I am soooooo all over that.   ;D

Guitar Hero: Metallica arrives early 2009 (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/12/16/guitar-hero-metallica-arrives-early-2009/)

Quote
We all knew it was coming, but now Guitar Hero: Metallica is 100% official. Speaking to USA today, Neversoft's Alan Flores and Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett discussed the game and some of its features. The story of the game is that players are members of a band that tours with Metallica, covering its songs at different venues. Neversoft decided that the game couldn't work chronologically, as Metallica's early work would be far too difficult at the beginning of the game. Concerning difficulty, Flores says that the game will be "a lot harder" than previous Guitar Hero games, and is aimed squarely at hardcore players. So then, should we just give up now?

The game should arrive early next year, with Ulrich specifically mentioning March.

Count me out for this one.  I like Metallica and all, but the their tracks in RB and GH are excruciatingly boring and at the same time incredibly difficult to play through, as far as I'm concerned.  (And the guitar solo in "One" is single-handedly responsible for me not being able to finish the Hard level in GH III).  A fun song to listen to does not necessarily equal a fun song to play.

Anyway, no GH:M for me, at least not until I can score it for around $20 or so.

(And please Neversoft somehow make these compatible with GH:WT the way that Harmonix has done with the AC/DC pack for Rock Band.)

We suspect all eleven tracks will be included in the album release, but highly doubt any of the bonus material will make the cut. Pearl Jam headed to Rock Band, you know you love it.

Do you think the Beatles songs are going to be fairly easy for the most part?  I know some of the later stuff is more complicated, but songs like I want to hold your hand? Are going to be difficult?  Really?  How?  Don't get me wrong, I love me some Beatles.

Quote
The Aerosmith bundle was a steal for $23
Meh, have you played it yet?  I guess for a bundle it is a hell of a deal, but I'm still really disappointed by the Aerosmith game.  I was ready for a new set of songs when it came out, so I bought it, but it cost at least twice as much as it should have.  I found it too easy and too short.  Not cool.  $23 would be about right.

How many tracks on the AC/DC pack?  I've contemplated it, but I think I may wait for it to go down a bit.

As guitar-only tracks, yeah, they'll probably be pretty simple.  But I think the real appeal of this game will be playing as a full band.

Quote
Meh, have you played it yet? (Aerosmith)

Yeah, I went through Hard in a day and am currently going back through Easy and Medium (for the money) and will go through Expert after that.  It is what it is.  I needed a second guitar, and they sell for $50 by themselves.  So, for less than half of that, I got a guitar and 40+ songs from a band (or bands) that I more or less dig.  Easily worth it to me at that price.

Quote
How many tracks on the AC/DC pack?  I've contemplated it, but I think I may wait for it to go down a bit.

Eighteen tracks.  From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC/DC_Live:_Rock_Band_Track_Pack#AC.2FDC_Live:_Rock_Band_Track_Pack):

   1. "Thunderstruck"
   2. "Shoot to Thrill"
   3. "Back in Black"
   4. "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be"
   5. "Heatseeker"
   6. "Fire Your Guns"
   7. "Jailbreak"
   8. "The Jack"
   9. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"
  10. "Moneytalks"
  11. "Hells Bells"
  12. "High Voltage"
  13. "Whole Lotta Rosie"
  14. "You Shook Me All Night Long"
  15. "T.N.T."
  16. "Let There Be Rock"
  17. "Highway To Hell"
  18. "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)"

Note that all of the tracks are live versions and were taken from the 1991 Live at Donington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_at_Donington_(AC/DC)) show.

Thanks Matt.

I agree that for the price you paid the Aerosmith version was well worth it.  I'm just sour I paid what I paid for it is all.  I enjoyed the songs for what they were, my biggest gripe was that I found the game too easy (on hard).  This is a similar complaint to what I've found for World Tour and I'm not sure if it is because the games got easier or I just got better.

It's a little bit of both, I think.  Everybody gets better the more they play, but the difficulty is definitely turned down from GH III.  It's in the timing, it's much looser and forgiving.  I remember several times, thinking "there's no way I would have hit that passage in GH III."

Doesn't really bother me that much, because I've always thought that GH III was way too difficult to begin with.  A year later, and I still haven't finished Hard, and am probably only about halfway through Expert.  I just hit that brick wall, and don't know if I'll ever go back to it at this point.

How far have you gotten on Expert?

I hit the brick wall the other day, and its name is "Back in the Saddle".  That excessively-long solo at the end has been giving me fits.  I've failed at 92%, 87%, and 97% (!).  So close, yet so far.  I'll get through it eventually.

Smooth sailing for me otherwise.

******

In other fake plastic guitar game news, I got all my Rock Band 1 and AC/DC songs transferred over to Rock Band 2 the other day.  Being able to play nearly every song from one disc is an incredibly attractive feature to me, and I think it's probably the main reason I prefer Rock Band over Guitar Hero.  I really hope the Beatles game is that way, too, but somehow I get the feeling it won't be.

I don't know :-\  I haven't pulled out the Aerosmith game since the late summer or early fall, so I really don't recall how far I got.  I'll check but I'd probably have stopped in only the second or third set I'd guess.

Hoping for RB2 or the AC/DC expansion pack for Christmas.

Oh.  Remember to charge the rechargeable batteries.  Nothing like trying to figure out why you've slid so far backwards in skill and trying to force your way through to no avail and then realize three days later maybe the batteries are dying. ::)

Santa brought Guitar Hero World Tour this Christmas.  Overall pretty good...I'm digging playing to the likes of Tool, System of a Down and Mars Volta.  But it's killing me to listen to crap like Jimmy Eat World and Blink 182.  Agonizing.

I've played drums more than anything, but I find them to be kind of touchy.  It seems to register two to three times as many misses as I'm actually missing.  I'll find that the game thinks I've hit a wrong note for no apparent reason, and it happens a *lot*.  Becomes kind of frustrating, actually.

I've asked this question alot on a bunch of forums, and yahoo answers over the last few days. I get alot of answers. But I don't htink any of them have yet been the same. I got RB2 for PS3 for Christmas, we couldn't pas it up with the awesome deal TRU was having. I've never played RB 1 on my system so there is no save data. If I go out an buy RB1, do I have to play the game through to get all the songs, then export them to my RB2 set? Which really should be my 1st question, when I export the songs, I no longer need the disc for RB1 right? And if that's the case, couldn't I just rent a RB1 game and get the songs? No, I'm not looking to rip off the company that makes the game, but I don't want to use PSN for paying for, and downloading songs, until I know how many of those are included on RB1.

I can't speak for the PS3, but as far as the 360 goes, there are only a couple of (negligible) reasons to keep the RB1 disc once you've exported the tracks into RB2.

One reason is that not all the tracks were exported into RB2.  So if you want to play "Enter Sandman" and the covers of "Run to the Hills" and "Paranoid," hang on to the RB1 disc.

The other reason is Achievements (which I guess is not a factor at all on the PS3).

Personally, I don't see myself ever putting the RB1 disc back in now that I've got (most of) the tracks transferred over to RB2.  Guess I should get rid of it (along with the AC/DC game).

In other news, I bought the Who track pack for Rock Band the other day, and I have a new found respect for John Entwistle's bass-playing.  That's some tough stuff!

Nick,

Best Buy has had instruments for a while...I purchased a keyboard from them about 6 years ago...long before Guitar Hero was popular.

I received Rock Band 2 as an early birthday present today since it was a day off.  What a fun game!   :D

I've played drums for years, but it was fun playing the guitar!

They've had consumer level keyboards for years.  I'm talking about REAL instruments.  Like guitars, basses, drums, amplifiers and the like.  Some of which cost over $3,000.  Not a crappy keyboard that sells for $150.

Guitar Hero: Metallica ~ March 29

Quote
Remember that "first half of 2009" stuff? Well, we actually have a real date for you now for the all 'Tallica Guitar Hero game . . . March 29 in North America for Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, with our friends outside of North America seeing the game in early May. Nintendo Wii and PS2 will follow later in the Spring, also most likely in early May.

In case you missed the December news story, Guitar Hero Metallica allows you to play as us in either single instrument or band career game modes in your choice of some famous settings or new venues with in the round staging. Included are 28 Metallica songs along with a few from some of our favs like Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head and Queen. There is also an all new Expert+ difficulty setting featuring two bass drum kick pedals (!!!) along with all the gameplay modes from Guitar Hero World Tour.

We've got some fun stuff planned leading up to release, and of course more details and previews of the game, so stay tuned! And if you would like to check out the trailer again, click here.

I've said before that I wouldn't be picking this up at first, and that's still true.

However, my mom's birthday is March 29, and now I know exactly what to get her.  Oh, happy day!

It looks like Best Buy is trying to translate the popularity of Guitar Hero and Rock Band into the sales of ACTUAL musical instruments.  They're now listing REAL INSTRUMENTS (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=abcat0207000&type=category) on the website, but I've yet to see any in an actual store.

I don't know who came up with this stroke of genius ::) but do they really think it's going to get some kid to bug their parents to get them an ACTUAL Les Paul that costs over $3000?

One of the Best Buys near my parent's house just added a really big musical instument section to the store. I have yet to actually walk in that section but it looked pretty nice. I've kind of wanted to try and pick up a musical instrument for a while now.

You didn't buy the first set?  Huh.

No, I just kept reading about all the problems people were having with the first set, so that kept me away.  Supposedly, this new set is worlds better than the first one, and I'm getting a little bored with the guitar, so I decided it was finally time to bite.

Speaking as someone who's been playing drums since he was 12, I prefer the guitar.   :D

It's not that the drums are all that hard, but my instincts want me to play them differently.  It's like afriend of mine who got an ultralight airplane after flying regular airplanes for years...he had real difficulty because his natural instincts had him wanting to do things the wrong way because the ultralight's controls were backwards compared to a normal airplane.

Matt - Any recent news on when GH:WT will have the drums sold on their own? I'd like to pick up a set, but haven't seen any solid news on when they might put them out.

The separate drums are finally up for pre-order on Red Octane's site (http://www.redoctane.com/Game-Controllers/Drum-Controllers) now.  ETA February 2009, it says.  $99.99 with free shipping for all kits on all systems; however, the midi-USB cable which you'll need to hook your drums up to your computer to adjust their sensitivity is completely free of charge and can be ordered here (http://redoctane.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/redoctane.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=21748) after filling out a warranty claim.  So, you might as well go ahead and order one of those, too.

Anyway, enjoy!

The game is counter-intuitive for musicians or anyone who's got even a little training on the instrument.  The skills don't translate.

The game is counter-intuitive for musicians or anyone who's got even a little training on the instrument.  The skills don't translate.

Neither do any games that involve flying aircraft with a basic handheld game controllers.  Get over it.

Do any of the shooter games translate to reality?  Nope.

It's wildly popular, people are having fun.  You know full well that anyone that thinks they can transfer GH/RB skills over to a real instrument is delusional.  They'll realize it.  But if it encourages more people to buy more instruments or attempt to learn stuff, what's the big deal?

Drifting back to reality, thanks for the Metallica track list.  I have to admit seeing that has me more interested in picking up the game than I thought I'd be.  Around 50 tracks is more reasonable value for the money than was the Aerosmith version, so good on them for that.

I still need to decide on a system other than the PS2 going forward and just make that move :-\

Moving on, I've gotten a little silly with the Rock Band DLC as of late:

Single tracks:

James Gang - "Funk #49"
Judas Priest - "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"
Muse - "Hysteria"
Radiohead - "My Iron Lung"
Rush - "Closer to the Heart"
Silversun Pickups - "Melatonin"
Silversun Pickups - "Well Thought Out Twinkles"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Siva"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Zero"
Soundgarden - "Jesus Christ Pose"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Date with the Night"

Black Sabbath Pack 01:
"N.I.B."
"Sweet Leaf"
"War Pigs"

Classic Rock Pack 01:
Blondie - "Call Me"
Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Simple Man"
The Police - "Message in a Bottle"

Nirvana Pack 01:
"Breed"
"Lounge Act"
"On a Plain"
"Polly"
"Something in the Way"
"Stay Away"
"Territorial Pissings"

The Police Pack 01:
"Can't Stand Losing You"
"Roxanne"
"Synchronicity II"

That oughta hold me for a while--at least until Ten comes out next month, anyway.  I got tired of Nirvana years ago but for some reason their stuff is really fun to play in Rock Band.

Also, any rumors of any Floyd, Tesla or Hendrix songs on the way?

No idea on Floyd or Tesla, but "Purple Haze (live)" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are already in GH World Tour.  In addition, there was a Hendrix track pack released a few weeks ago for GH WT which consists of "If 6 Was 9," "Little Wing" and a live version of "Fire" from Woodstock.

GH:WT is getting more Hendrix, later this month:

Quote
The Jimi Hendrix Track Pack (Available March 19th)

    * "Freedom" by Jimi Hendrix
    * "Angel" by Jimi Hendrix
    * "Foxey Lady (Live)" by Jimi Hendrix

And some Queen:

Quote
The Queen Track Pack (Available March 26th)

    * "We Are The Champions" by Queen
    * "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen
    * "C-lebrity" by Queen

Link (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/world-tour-adds-queen-hendrix-and-european-dlc-in-march/)

Guitar Hero still has a ways to go before they can catch up to Rock Band, as far as downloadable stuff goes, but, with stuff like the above, they're getting there.  I just wish they'd make all their songs universal between titles.

As for Rock Band DLC, I grabbed the Alt. Country pack last week:

Drive-By Truckers - "3 Dimes Down"
Lucinda Williams - "Can't Let Go"
Neko Case - "People Got a Lotta Nerve"
Old 97s - "Time Bomb (live)"
Steve Earle - "Satellite Radio"

Good stuff.  I'm hoping that releases like this mean that a Wilco track pack for Rock Band could someday be a possibility.  Anyway, I'm done with Rock Band DLC until Ten comes out on the 24th.  Unless some Wilco comes out before then.

You guys ready for the onslaught of Guitar Hero spinoffs Activision's getting ready to pump out this year?

Confirmed:

Guitar Hero: Metallica (March 29)
Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits (June)
Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits (June) (DS game)

Rumored:

Hard Rock: Van Halen (August)
Guitar Hero 5 (September)
DJ Hero (October)
Band Hero (November)
DS Guitar Hero #4 (?)
Sing Hero (?)

Out of those, here's what I'm definitely getting:

The Beatles: Rock Band

I dunno what I'll get off that.  Now that I've moved to Wii I'll have to pick up some new peripherals and that will likely come from RB2 for one guitar and the drums.  The other guitar will depend on what I decide on later.

Too many games too fast.  I like the notion of a couple (maybe three) games in a year to look forward too.  But I'm only about halfway through GHWT on expert and Metallica is due within days?  I haven't even bought RB2 so real quick I'm two full games behind.  Too much, too fast for me, but I suppose I'm not a normal gamer anyway.

I'm still missing all of the expansion packs (RB) and I haven't even examined if you can find any of that stuff for the Wii (I think it is either more limited than XBox or non-existent, correct?).

So no real need for a lot in short order.  I'll buy some RB expansion packs, RB2 (and presumably RB3 later in the year), Beatles and then see what I can find for downloads, if any.  GH wise will be Metallica (as I said before, good job on making the track list longer than Aerosmith) and GH5.  If I actually hit a point where I've managed to get through expert on all the games I own, I'd consider other content.  But with summer coming I don't see me catching up, so doubtful that will be a consideration.

OK, I'm having a bitch of a time with the drums, which is the primary reason I hadn't played it since January.  It seems the orange pad (ride/cymbal) doesn't like to register when I'm playing a song.  I've tried hitting it in the middle with the tip of the stick, on the sides like a crash...it doesn't like it either way.  I try it in free style mode and it obviously works...it just doesn't seem to register right in the song.  And no, it's not because I suck.  :)  Anyone else have this issue?

Anyone pick up Metallica yet?

Haven't picked it up, but a friend did and I played it a bunch the other day, enough to finish the guitar career on Hard.  Pleasantly surprised--not enough to buy it at full retail, but if I can get it for around $40 or less, I'll snag it.  It's amazing how fleshed-out it is compared to the Aerosmith game.

Same friend hooked me up with World Tour the other day so I've been flying through that over the last few days.  Beat guitar on Hard and then started up bass on Expert and everything was going swimmingly until I crashed and burned on the very last song, "B.Y.O.B." by System of a Down.  Tried it a couple of times, was only able to get like 11% of the way in.  That **** is just goofy.

I would enjoy the Guitar Hero franchise so much more if they would just do like the Harmonix people did with Rock Band and make all their songs interchangeable between games.  Being able to play all my songs off of one disc is an incredibly appealing feature to me, and I don't understand why Neversoft/Activision can't do it.

P.S.  Oh yeah, I also finished GH: Aerosmith on Expert guitar the other day.  First time I've ever beat expert guitar on any of the GH games.

----

The Good:  All master tracks, compatible with vocals and drums, stuff that's never been available outside the PS2 games

The Bad:  Really crappy song selection in some cases (both in stuff that's there and stuff that's not--and stuff that's already in Rock Band), the afore-mentioned incompatibility with other GH content

The Ugly:  Full retail price

---

I've been looking for a cheap copy of GH II for the 360 forever, and this kind of puts the damper on that a little bit.  On one hand, $60 for a bunch of songs that I've already been playing for the last couple of years is highway robbery.  On the other hand, being able to play "Take It Off" without having to drag out my PS2 and PS2 guitars is awfully inticing.  So I don't know.  In the end, I'll probably treat this like I have all the other recent GH games and wait for a good sale.  If only those ******* would just steal something else from Harmonix and make all of those songs exportable. . .

Coming this fall to the 360, PS3, Wii, and DS:  Lego Rock Band (http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20090421005517&newsLang=en)

LEGO Rock Band combines the multiplayer music experience of Rock Band® with the fun, customization and humor of the LEGO videogame franchise packed with brilliant chart-topping songs and classic favorites suitable for younger audiences, including:

Blur:                             “Song 2”
Carl Douglas:                   “Kung Fu Fighting”
Europe:                   “The Final Countdown”
Good Charlotte:                   “Boys and Girls"
Pink:                   “So What”

Players will become rockers as they embark on a journey to stardom that the whole family can enjoy as they work their way through local venues, stadiums and fantasy locations on Earth and beyond that mimic the imaginative settings that the LEGO world offers. Also continuing the LEGO “build-and-play” gaming experience, players will be able to create their own LEGO Rock Band style as they customize their minifigure avatars, band and entourage, including roadies, managers and crew. LEGO Rock Band supports Rock Band instruments, as well as other music game controllers.

I love the Lego games, and I love Rock Band, so I guess I'll have to love the love child of the two.  Will love it even more if the songs are exportable.  'Bout time "The Final Countdown" made it into one of these music games.

Rumored:

Hard Rock: Van Halen (August)
Guitar Hero 5 (September)
DJ Hero (October)
Band Hero (November)

Confirmed. (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/activision-announces-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-and-dj-hero-for-fa/)

Quote
Activision continues to "exploit" its Guitar Hero franchise this year with three new full titles coming this autumn. The newly announced Guitar Hero 5 will offer "the ability to drop in and out of songs and change band members, instruments and difficulty levels on the fly." The press release contains no other details regarding the game, but you can bet it'll be pretty similar to Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Band Hero is the second of Activision's Hero trifecta for this fall. Don't be confused, Band Hero is completely separate from Guitar Hero. Except it's very similar -- it's Activision's attempt at a family-oriented Guitar Hero game, rated E10+, and will be facing off against Harmonix's Lego Rock Band later this year.

Finally, DJ Hero is something we've been hearing a lot of murmurs about for a while. It will feature "diverse music genres including hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance" and will include the turntable controller, images of which we posted earlier. Apparently the title "transforms players into DJs who rule the club scene by creating original mixes of popular songs and music from the world's most exciting artists and DJs." We have to wonder, does the world need this many heroes?

Quote
Those Van Halen boys are likely happy today, as it marks the end of their need for silence regarding their long-rumored video game: Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Activision has confirmed to Joystiq that the title is in development and will release sometime during the second half of this year. Activision could not confirm any songs, and only said the game will contain Van Halen's "greatest hits," as well as guest acts such as Queen, Weezer, blink-182, The Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age, and more.

We've put in word to Activision to clarify if the game will be all David Lee Roth, or if fans will also get some Sammy Hagar and some Gary Cherone love. Well, okay, maybe not Gary Cherone. Nobody liked that guy.

Update: Activision's Senior Vice President of Global Brand Management (whew!) told us, "Oh this is definitely Van Halen, not Van Hagar," which is a plus since David Lee Roth is back with the band and they just finished a successful tour. There's a very slim chance that the rockers might show up at E3, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

You'd miss me if I left.

Really, you would.

In time I can see myself purchasing the Van Halen/GH5 versions, but no rush on that stuff any more than Metallica.  I think I'll aim for a $29.99 purchase price.

As long as they work Yellow Ledbetter in somewhere, that PJ thing should be pretty cool.  I'm gonna try my best to get the version of Better Man from the show I went to in there.

USA Today reveals some more details about GH 5 (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/05/66795165/1?csp=34)

Promising track list already:

Quote
Songs:  Tom Petty (Runnin Down a Dream) and the White Stripes (Blue Orchid). Other new tunes on the songlist: The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil), Bob Dylan (All Along The Watchtower), Santana (No One To Depend On), Vampire Weekend (A-Punk), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire) and Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire).

And those wanting some funky music can rock to Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.

I don't think I've mentioned this in here before, but I really hope those tracks are exportable (or at least that the songs from the older games will be exportable into this one).

Guitar Hero: Metallica may or may not be on sale at Target next week for $37.

Also, I may or may not have just sent $45 to Rob for picking me up a copy of the same game at a store down in Dallas just a couple days ago.

Well, even though you paid for shipping and some Paypal fees, at least you got it for $2.00 cheaper on the base price.   :-\

Waiting on a review.
Title: Re: Guitar Hero / Rock Band
Post by: Matt on May 22, 2009, 12:47 PM
I kinda reviewed it earlier, but yeah, it's good stuff.  Played all the way through guitar on Hard, and played enough of Expert bass to finish the career.  (It's setup a little differently than the past GH games--you don't have to beat every song to open up the next tier or complete a career.)  I'll be starting on either Easy or Medium drums once I play some more Expert bass.  I may even tackle vocals once I get through with drums (and if I ever get around to picking up a microphone.)  It's also the first GH game to show you where you are in terms of stars (similar to what Rock Band does), so that's a good thing to have.

Songs themselves sound phenomenal and the setlist is fantastic--really centered on the good old stuff.  Something like six of the eight songs from Master of Puppets.  The only song I'm missing is Jump in the Fire--it's got a great riff that would be really fun to play.  Other than that, they hit on pretty much everything you would expect them to hit on--no complaints and even the non-Metallica songs are done well and fun to play.

I guess I should also mention that the difficulty is toned down quite a bit from GH3 (more like the difficulty in GH3 was an anomoly).  It was really refreshing to finally be able to get all the way through One this time, instead of ******** the bed about 85% of the way in like what happens in GH3.

The extras are very well done and this is where GHM really blows the Aerosmith game out of the water.  Many of the songs have what they call "Metallifacts", which is a trivia track that plays during the song, similar to Pop Up Video.  Many, if not all of the songs have lyrics you can read, and there are several live performance and behind-the-scenes videos you can watch if you want.  There's also a little picture gallery which is kind of cool.

My only real complaint with the game doesn't really come from a gaming perspective, and more as a Metallica fan, but aside from a few mentions in the Metallifacts, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are virtually ignored throughout.  And I kind of understand why (they didn't want to slight the new guy), but those guys were important parts of the band's history (well, at least Cliff was, anyway  ;) ) and there should have been a little more about them.  Not saying they should have been playable characters or whatever (that would be weird), but something more would have been nice.  Like, I was going through the photo gallery yesterday and they've got all these group shots from the old days, where it's just James, Kirk, and Lars, and Cliff was cropped out.  Why do that, you know?  They arguably wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for him, so why go out of the way to exclude him?

Anyway, I'll wrap up by saying that this is easily the best Neversoft Guitar Hero game to date.  Easily better than Aerosmith, much more fun to play than GH3, and the slight improvements it makes over World Tour makes it better than that game.  I still don't know if it's worth $60 (I have a hard time paying that for any game these days, especially ones that don't feature---wait for it---exportable tracks), but it's great at around $40 or less.

I was pretty impressed by the trailer.  But the musician in me still finds the whole game concept counterintuitive.  Especially since I've played a good deal of those songs with actual rock bands in front of audiences.

Damn, there's barely any love in here for real guitars.  So I'll show ya mine!  ;D

I'll play a silly video game, but certainly not guitar player.  Maybe that makes me middle-aged?

The game is counter-intuitive for musicians or anyone who's got even a little training on the instrument.  The skills don't translate.

I was pretty impressed by the trailer.  But the musician in me still finds the whole game concept counterintuitive.  Especially since I've played a good deal of those songs with actual rock bands in front of audiences.

Sorry for the redundancy Matt.  I'm not gonna **** off out of the thread that easily, but I will offer something a little different this time.

The Beatles angle was a big draw for me with this newest rock band game.  And it made it a whole lot cooler in my eyes.  Especially just to see the conceptualization of the later material that was never played by the Beatles in concert.  I think you're going to draw some of the really fanatical Beatles fans with that alone.

I think it's cool that the game is giving kids who were more interested in video games some exposure to music, and the idea that making music is one of the most rewarding things around.  I've also heard some anecdotal reports that the game has gotten more kids interested in playing music, and musical instrument sales may be up thanks to the game.  I think that's a great thing.  But I also think that a lot of those kids might be in for a rude awakening when they learn that actually playing the instrument can be a lot harder than the game.

Yeah, so?  The ones who bail out due to it being too hard will go back to their video games, and the ones who are really interested in playing will stick with it and go on to learn their instrument.  You know, the same way it's been since, oh, forever.

You've always seemed to be hung up on this "real guitar vs. video game guitar" thing, almost as if there's some sort of conspiracy out there to get kids to put down the real instruments and pick up the fake ones.  It's just an old, tired, baseless, bull**** argument.  In the end, it's just a video game.  For fun.  But if it motivates just one kid out there to grab a guitar and learn a few chords, then everybody wins.
Title: Re: Guitar Hero / Rock Band
Post by: Nicklab on June 8, 2009, 07:03 PM
If it gets kids motivated to pick up a real instrument a create something because of Rock Band or Guitar Hero?  I find that to be a fantastic prospect.  Maybe it'll be the vehicle to inspire some genuine talents.  And bringing people together in a social setting is cool too.

One thing that irks me about the game is that bars that may have once hosted live music are now hosting Rock Band nights.  I think that's totally and utterly ****ed.  A bar decides to make a one time expenditure of a few grand on a pretty cool Rock Band setup with some big plasma monitors rather than hire actual rock bands.  This isn't just happening in isolated areas where the talent pool isn't that deep.  This is going on in MAJOR CITIES with viable music scenes.

Granted, some of these places may have already given up on live music already and decided to host a karaoke night before they went with Rock Band.  But when I see an entertainment format that bar and club owners view as a much cheaper alternative so that they no longer have to employ real musicians, I've got a problem with that.

Title: Re: Guitar Hero / Rock Band

I don't think it's that.  I think bar owners just wanted cheaper entertainment.

I don't think it's that.  I think bar owners just wanted cheaper entertainment.

Some yes, some no.

I'm in a much, much smaller market than you, but from what I've learned from the bar owners/managers I know is that a given concept is good for about 3 years at most, regardless of what it is.  So it doesn't matter all that much to them what the concept is in most cases so long as it brings people in and they make money.  If they can stretch it out to five years, they're laughing.

I'd agree with ruiner to a degree, live bands seem to be in a down phase, at least locally.  Hip hop and dance is all the rage for the moment (or has been forever in various incarnations) in the more popular meat markets.  Most of the GH/RB stuff around here tends to be earlier in the week when the crowds aren't really out all that much anyway.  But maybe that's just around here.

Regardless I think if you look at it from the positive side, most people understand this is entertainment and if it gets kids playing for real, so much the better.  Like all video games, the connection to reality is tenuous at best.  I'm sure the majority of COD players don't have any real illusions of storming a beach head or something like that.  If they do, they've entered into the dillusional side of things.

As for the Maiden stuff, I guess I'll go track down the Wii version but I don't have hardware for that yet.  Trying to wait out the inevitable slash to 50% that should come at the end of summer or so.

The music-game release date calendar for the rest of the year (start saving up):

Guitar Hero: Smash Hits (June 16)
Guitar Hero 5 (September 1)
The Beatles: Rock Band (September 9)
DJ Hero (October 27)
Lego Rock Band (November 8 )
Band Hero (November 17)
Guitar Hero: Van Halen (?)

And some random news:

GH: World Tour songs and DLC exportable into GH 5 (http://www.gameplayer.com.au/gp_documents/SecretsofE3.aspx?Page=3)

Guitar Hero: Van Halen is gonna suck balls (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=121627)

Beatles RB will be totally incompatible with rest of the RB franchise, will have it's own downloadable content, however.  "All You Need Is Love" and full Abbey Road album available shortly after launch, other albums presumably to follow. That's a huge list.   :o  I also agree about Frampton, I'm looking forward to that.  Probably half the songs in there I don't know, but I appreciate they do that as it is a good avenue to expose folks to music they are unfamiliar with.

Was the Maiden track pack only released on line?  Still haven't picked up any hardware for the Wii, so haven't bothered to go looking that way.  Will get the hardware when they drop the price for RB2, I assume in the fall.

I think I've been reading this wrong, this whole time.  Apparently it's just the downloadable stuff from World Tour and not the songs on the actual disc.

I don't have any downloadable songs for World Tour outside of the free ones, so this is a bummer, man.

I've heard from a number of people that playing these Rock Band games actaully helps you to learn to play a real guitar.  Maybe if you buy the game and learn the songs that way, you can transfer the knowledge to a real guitar!

See, I've had the opposite experience.  I was halfway through my classical guitar studies at Juilliard when Guitar Hero 1 came out and I said "**** it--there's no future in classical guitar, video game guitar is where it's at."  I told my instructor to take a hike and I've been playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band tournaments ever since.  I'm making so much bank and scoring so much tail it's not even funny.

Trying to wait out the inevitable slash to 50% that should come at the end of summer or so.

It appears to be the end of summer.  Picked up the full RB2 package at Wally World for $99 today.  Sony and their PS3 backwards noncompatibility can now officially kiss my ass.

I like the VH track listing, but I'll wait on that one as well for the sale price.

How about for free with a purchase of Guitar Hero 5? (http://hub.guitarhero.com/vanhalengameoffer/)  Not a bad deal.  I think I'm in.  Was planning on picking up GH5 during TRU's annual Buy Two, Get One Free sale in October, anyway.

And speaking of GH5:

Yes it is, and apparently you'll be able to import all the tracks from GH: World Tour into it as well.

I think I've been reading this wrong, this whole time.  Apparently it's just the downloadable stuff from World Tour and not the songs on the actual disc.

I don't have any downloadable songs for World Tour outside of the free ones, so this is a bummer, man.

Apparently it will allow for some "disc-importing" after all (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/activision-clarifies-guitar-hero-5-song-importing-process/).  Good stuff.

The New York Times put up a huge, in-depth article about The Beatles: Rock Band yesterday:  While My Guitar Gently Beeps (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/magazine/16beatles-t.html?pagewanted=1&_r=4)

Of note:

Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's will be full-album downloads along with Abbey Road

Also of note, and I quote:

Quote
PEOPLE WHO PLAY Rock Band and Guitar Hero like to post videos of their efforts to YouTube. Almost inevitably, these attract comments like the following:

“pick up a real guitar”

“lets see you get a life, and actually get out of the house instead of been a loser and trying to show off with your ‘skill’ to touch plastic”

“you dont rock your a sad loser whos never gonna loose his virginity”

There is something about music video games that infuriates people. The hostility comes largely from musicians, although many people who enjoy these games are musicians themselves. Even people who are not offended by the games are frequently baffled by them. Olivia Harrison admits that her husband’s response to Rock Band probably would have been, “Why don’t they play real guitars?”

Gamers in turn are baffled by the criticism of what is, after all, “just a game.” People who play Halo or Gran Turismo are rarely asked why they don’t pick up a real gun or race real cars. You rarely hear that Monopoly is a waste of time because it doesn’t actually teach anything about buying hotels. The disparagement of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, then, suggests that music games do resemble actual performance, at least enough so that people feel the need to point out that they are not. Indeed a common defense of Rock Band is that it does teach musical fundamentals or at least inspires people to upgrade to proper instruments. MTV Games’ Paul DeGooyer likens Rock Band to the Kodaly method of music instruction, which assigned hand symbols to do-re-mi and involves using rhythmic tapping as pedagogical building blocks.

Kiri Miller, an assistant professor of ethnomusicology at Brown University who studies video-game music, says the two most common responses to the game are equally misguided. “Either these games are supposed to be teaching you some fabulous skill that we can celebrate or they are supposed to be having some terrible deleterious effect and turning you into some kind of automaton,” she told me. Instead of thinking of the games in relation, good or bad, to traditional performance, she finds them “compelling in and of themselves as a new form of musical experience.”

The hostility that people have toward Rock Band and Guitar Hero, she adds, is an expression of schizophonic anxiety — “schizophonia” being the composer R. Murray Schafer’s word for the split between music and its source, first coined 40 years ago to explain why an earlier generation was deeply troubled by the advent of recorded music. The way people came to terms with the phenomenon of recording, Miller explains, “was to create these really sharp distinctions between the live and the recorded. So we know what’s live, and it has its particular value and authenticity; and we know what’s recorded, and it also eventually has its particular value and authenticity.” Music gaming disturbs people because it upends those distinctions by adding to recorded music “this component of physical bodily performance that we think of as being a hallmark of liveness.”

Scorn for music gaming is thus related to scorn for lip synching. Miller, who identifies the games as “rock drag,” says it’s no coincidence that so much of the online vitriol takes the form of homophobic slurs, or that Guitar Hero was mocked by “South Park” as Guitar Queer-o. “I want to be careful not to drag us too deep into the valley of queer theory,” she said, before going on to explain that the hatred of Rock Band likely has something to do with people using their bodies in a way that fails to match expectations — they’re obviously not playing music, but it sure looks and sounds as if they are — and doing so in a way that is simultaneously tongue-in-cheek and sincere. For the Beatles to embrace this transgressive and supposedly juvenile and nerdy medium in such a public way is “a benediction” that only history’s most important rock group could give, Miller says. “I fully expect it may help me get more grants.”

Ringo relates:

Quote
Peering over his rectangular tinted glasses, Starr admitted that he’d tried to play Rock Band only once: “It’s impossible. I cannot watch the line going down and play at the same time.” The problem, he suggested, is that he’s a musician. People who like Rock Band, “they’re playing a game, they’re not making music. The music is already made.” The game, it seemed, perplexed him a little. “The kids are getting really great at this game,” he said, “but they couldn’t suddenly go and play the Staples Center.”

Paul pontificates:

Quote
At 67, McCartney, even up close, is still unmistakably the cute one. He smiled, the lines around his eyes crinkling, and unbuttoned his jacket as he sat down. Like Starr, he volunteered that he can’t play his own game, but he suspects that if it had been around when he was a kid, he would have liked it.

Would he have liked it too much? I asked. If his drive to play rock ’n’ roll had been satiated by a 1950s Guitar Hero, would the world have been robbed of the Beatles? “I don’t think so,” he said, shaking his head. “Knowing me and knowing my ambition.” He thought for a bit, then added that any kid who is going to become a musician anyway won’t decide to stop with a game. “They’ll get the Beatles down, but then if they’re that into music, they’ll just hook up with friends, like they do, and say, let’s try to write one of our own. I think that’ll always happen.”

Anyway, good article.  Long, but worth the read if you're at all interested in the game.

Finally picked up GH5 today - and put in for the free Van Halen one, which is nice, because I probably would have bought it anyway.
