Title: 300 - The Movie

It comes out in March and looks to be all kinds of kickass.

It seems to be greatly anticipated among comic/movie geek circles (the AICN demographic basically)--but the Society of Ancient History at my college (of which I am a member (http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/22.gif)) is also very excited for this film.

I'm a little worried it's going to be two hours of slow motion and people yelling "Sparta".

I'm really excited about this one.  Sin City was okay - but I think it was more of a test run for this type of graphic-novel-movie.

Hopefully it lives up to this new trailer - the effects are gorgeous.

I can't view the trailers from here..I saw one at the theatre though...It looked good when I saw the behemoth creatures in the end(behemoth creatures = my type of movie..see SW,LOTR,narnia ect.)

So, seeing those creatures, is this supposed to be in our history based or another time another place/world? That just so happens to have Greece, Roman warriors similarities??!

Color me interested anyhew.

It's inspired by an actual battle that was recorded by Herodotus: the Battle of Thermopylae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae). But the film itself is based on a comic book by Frank Miller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/300_%28comic_book%29), which takes liberties with the history (or so I'm told--I haven't read it).

Basically the film abandoned the "this is the true story" pretensions of most sword-and-sandal flicks, and is just going for stuff that looks nifty and super-badass (i.e., behemoth creatures). Which is fine by me. 8)

Four new UK posters (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/31152)

The overblown text turned them cheesy and middle-schoolish ("Thirsty for Spartan blood"?? Give me a break ::)), but it is what it is. The first one's decent, and the second one will presumably make more sense once the line is in context.

Pretty hilarious review sent in to AICN (http://www.aintitcool.com/?q=node/31520)

Quote
The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it’s sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, “I need some extra sauce packets” guess what? You’re getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

I can’t spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN’T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that’s hitting someone’s balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

I've read that statement three times and I still can't make any sense of it.

I think what it means is that you'll be so amped up after seeing the movie, your very demeanor will scare the Taco Bell cashier into oversupplying your requests. 300 + you = badass, apparently. ;D

Wow... I wonder if my nephew wrote that reveiw...that sounds like things he and his friends say on a daily basis..

I plan to go see this, but not expecting a story...just violence...maim kill destroy...the fun things in life!
Besides, most the time I go see a movie expecting a good story these days I am disapointed...

That sucks.

SPOILER?

Basically it has to do with the Spartans building that wall of dead Persians and then knocking it over on them like we saw in the trailer. There's a bunch of fighting and stabbing. Then the Persians loose that troll-like dude from the trailer, and he starts breaking **** and the clip ends with him fighting Leonidas (Gerard Butler's character).

The video and audio quality are garbage anyway.

Interesting article...I just wish some people would realize that not everything has to do with current US politics.

Does anyone know anything else about the connection of the Incredibles and Ayn Rand?  WTF is that all about?
Title: Re: 300 (March 9, 2007)
Post by: BillCable on March 6, 2007, 12:38 AM
I had to look up who Ayn Rand was...

I can see how it Incredibles pushed free-market capitalism over communism.  But it felt in broader strokes... don't keep down the talented to make the untalented feel better about themselves.  So it was more "Rah-rah individualism!  Rah-rah America!" than Ayn Rand in particular.

I just got back.  It was about what I expected.  2 hours or so of complete ass kicking, with almost no plot.  It was over the top in every way.  The visual effects, compositing and art direction were beautiful and I enjoyed almost the whole thing.  There were a few parts I thought were too melodramatic and pretty cheesy, but hey, that was kinda the deal right?  I'll probably go check it out one more time at the Imax.
Title: Re: 300 (March 9, 2007)
Post by: Darby on March 10, 2007, 11:38 AM
I agree.  I really liked it, but there were some parts where they overdid it.  The only thing that really bothered me was the utter exaggeration of the Persians; the grotesquerie, the deformations and so on.  I know this is an adaptation of Frank Miller's novel as opposed to the historical event, but it felt like they wanted the 300 to fight orcs or trolls or some kind of monsters instead of actual human beings sometimes.

Really want to see this movie as it's looking to beat Troy and other films in terms of the ancient epic genre. The problem is, everyone I know either saw it already or doesn't want to see it (why that would be, I have no idea).

Anyone in Orange County looking for a date? :-* ;)

I'd see it alone, but if it comes to that, it won't be on the debut weekend. I'd rather sit next to empty seats than slobs. It's been sold out at almost every show.

Today I dined in Hell and it was great! The story is an excellent fable, though rooted in history. I'd see it again in a second.

Leonidas is one bad ************, I'd piss myself if he started screaming in my face.

Xerxes is a great character and his voice will make your puppy at home cry.

The boobies in the movie were nice. Especially the gumdrops on the queen.  :o

2 thumbs up, way up.  8)

Saw it on Friday with a bunch of folks from school (Society of Ancient History (http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/22.gif)).

I'd give it four stars out of five--it was really good, but I'm just not feeling the "transcendent moviegoing experience of the 2000s" thing. *shrugs* That being said, I'll likely see it again--maybe on IMAX, but here that's $14 a showing.

You could almost hear the accountants falling over themselves last week, scrambling to find a similar movie to rush into theaters after "300" made $70m opening weekend.

I'm guessing the only reason they didn't already have something else slated for this year is because nobody thought that a March released, rated R film would be that kind of a hit.

It's supposed to be based on a completely different, unconnected event.  He's creating a new story for Sin City 2 as well, and that could be considered a "for profit sequel."  As long as it's quality stuff, I don't care why he does it.
