Title: Kubrick Newbies - Questions and Advice
Post by: David on April 21, 2007, 02:55 PM
Hi, guys! I thought you Kubrickaholics could help me out. I have seen pictures of a certain Admiral Ackbar, a certain Snaggletooth, and a certain Death Star Gunner over at yakface (well, and a certain yakface over at yakface!), and I've decided its time to begin getting me some of these!

But Ive never bought one ever before, so I cant begin to have any idea where to find them. I really really want to start collecting these, so Id really appreciate some help, JDers! Thanks.  8)

All you need to do is scope out some of the classifieds on this site, and you will find some in short order. It is good to understand the case ratios (take a look at the great checklist that Jessevader has put together) so you know which are harder to find than others.

Most of the kubrick boxes have had 3-4 figures that there are only one of out of 12. Other characters can be 3 or 4 out of 12. What that means is years down the road, with series 3 for instance, wicket and jawa are still $5 a figure, while Lando or 3-PO can set you back $30. The AT-AT driver can be even more.

Then there are the chase figures, which can be 2 per master case of 48 figures (1:24), 1 per master case of 48 figures(1:48), or 1 in every other (1:96). These start getting spendy. Although some of the 1:24 figures from the early sets are less expensive than some of the 1:12- it just depends on the desirability of the figure.

Check out the checklist, the classifieds, and completed auctions on ebay- With a little effort and luck they start to pile up in a hurry!

Dan didn't mention that these are largely an overseas thing too.  Relatively few US retailers carry them as they tend to be Japanese/Hong Kong exclusive in terms of distribution.  Most of us order them directly from HLJ.com or Robby.jp (requires membership) though I think BBTS is still selling them in the US.  Many folks hook up together with a pimp pusher supplier like Jeff to get upcoming stuff.

Basically you won't find them at retail, even less common places like Hot Topic or comic stores.

Although to be fair, I spent some time at Yakface today, and they have begun a very nice checklist themselves. I like the "check" feature- but it reminds me there are some I do not have, and some I probably never will, even with beer and ebay.

If you want to order online, just a few places in the US carry Kuby's:

Toytokyo.com (http://www.toytokyo.com/shopping/index.php/page/search)

Drtonguestoys.com (http://www.drtonguestoys.com/store.cgi)

Freebento.com (http://www.freebento.com/store/customer/search.php?substring=star+wars+kubrick)

As mentioned, check the JD classifieds or eBay. Once you get one, you are hooked.  ;D

I used JD as a template, so this may help.
Its good to know ratios.
It might be best to buy past series by the series, try to get at least the basic six then the chase figures, I guess the same can be said for future series as well or you can buy a Master Case or a box of 12, but be aware (especially on ebay) when you buy boxes of 12, chances are that it will not have any chase figures in it because the boxes of 12 that had them have already been pulled from the case.
Most 1:48 (or 1:96) figures go for $100 or more.

Basic Series come in cases of 48.

As far as the 1:48 figures go...the pattern as of late is that you get one or the other in your case, not both! (This is for anyone new or anyone who has not paid attention! ) There was a pattern with certain series as far as which one you could expect in your case depending on if it was from Japan or Hong Kong, but as of late I think its been totally random.

As far as 2:48 or 3:48 Figures go...they will all be in the same box of 12 NOT spread throughout the case of 48.

Don't do it, Robo!! Don't give into the dark side of Kubricks!!

Where's Jeff? He's always trying to get me hooked... I think he's even trying to find a DS Gunner to tempting me into this habit hobby.  ;) Someday he'll catch me at a weak moment and bam... I'm screwed.

They truly are addicting, but they are hard to hell to track down (especially series 1 & parts of 2, Obi, Greedo, & Tusken). I'm not even going to get into hunting after the exclusives...too much time, too much money.

Hi,

I'm brand new to the forums and actually brand new to collecting star wars kubricks.  I'm really interested in collecting these kubricks and I've been trying to figure out a way to collect all of them.  I've been doing research and I've found it's pretty difficult to get them.  I know I can use ebay but does anyone have any advice on how to get these kubricks and where to start?  Should I buy them?  Can I trade for them and if so who do I contact?

I know ebay is a way but sometimes they get pretty pricey.

In particular I'm looking for the earlier series like Series 1 - 4.  As you know it's pretty hard to get these now.  But any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)  Thanks a lot.

Welcome eglew88!

If you go back to the main Kubrick thread, you will find a sub-thread titled Kubrick Newbies: Questions and Advice- It should be a good starting point!

Keep an eye on the classifieds section, I saw DSJ recently put some up, and I still have a sealed box of series 7 plus a basic set of 6 available. The early series are definately tough to get, but it really comes down to choices of what you want to collect. I pass on the sideshow and gentle giant items, and feel better dropping more dough on the kubricks myself.

This thread will probably get merged with the other, but welcome and good luck!

does anyone have any advice on how to get these kubricks and where to start?

The best place to star is with the "not rare" pieces from each series.  Usually you can get them super-cheap ($3-5 each) on eBay.  This allows you to get a few to decide whether on not you want to collect them.

After that, the best place for older series (like Series 1 to 4) really is eBay.  They are pricey, but that is really the only place you are going to find them appear regularily.  Maybe once and a while you can find extras on the forums, but usually just parts of series and not the whole thing.

For new stuff (Series 7 and eventually Series 8 ), it's best to get involved on the boards as many people buy in bulk and can help you.

Should I buy them?

If you like them, yes!

Can I trade for them and if so who do I contact?

Like Dan said, keep an eye on our Classifieds Forum (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=23.0).  Kubricks pop up al the time there...

Hey, 1st time poster here. I have been collecting kubricks for a couple of months now, still relatively new to it but my collection now amounts too 38 kubricks soon to be 39. Anyway my question is about the Johnny Lightning Cases for which alot of you seem to use. Where do you get these from? and how much do they cost? I live in england so any help / tips / advice would be great. Thanks.

We can get them at Toys R Us here, although their stocking seems to be a bit erratic at times. If you end up wanting someone here to get some for you and ship them out, I would be willing. They run just under $7.00 after tax. You could probably get 3-4 in a letter post size box-

There are also the display Cases that Medicom makes.
They have a peg that holds the figure.
Check the For Sale section over at www.kubricknation.com
One of the memebers posted that he had a case left.

And it should be pointed out that $3-5 is below retail cost on these pieces.  I think post-shipping the regular cost on these stateside (or Canada or elsewhere) is between $7-10 each.  Variability depends on things like exchange rate, customs fees, shipping rates.  So getting a six piece set for about $60 is reasonable (chase not included, of course).

Interesting that the prices are similar in the UK.

I've only been collecting for about a month and picked up the basic full Series 6 & 7 for around £30 ($60) per set.

Hi guys,

Well, I just kinda into the kubricks lately. It's because I bought all series 1 complete set ....to be honest ....very...very cheap. Well, I thought I was going to give them to my friends. Then I research here that I actually have the chase Boba Fett series 1 (which has Yellow and Red gauntlet). Not only that, I really thought that Kubricks are not only cute, but also cool, and very detail. However, until now, I am not too sure if I should try to collect them. Here are some of my considerations:

Here are some of my considerations:
  • They are kinda expensive
  • The chase is really really hard to get.....I think...plus expensive

 ??? ???
Rebo

While some of the chase figures are expensive, most of the basics can be had quite cheaply (cheap always being a relative term of course). The basic collection of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 is going to be something like:
series 2 $100
Series 3 $100
Series 4  $80
Series 5  $40
Series 6  $40
Series 7  $40

So that is 24 figures for $400, or $16.67 each. You can get lots of extra biker scouts, royal guards, tie pilots, death star gunners, ewoks, and sometimes even jawas for $5 each or so. Once you get yourself caught up to series 4-5, it gets quite reasonable as long as you don't need all the chases. As a matter of fact, once you get past series 4 no figure is over $10 by iteself.

I have a good size collection, and I still don't have some of the early chase figures- but I really don't mind. That little imperial army of bricks is my favorite part of my star wars collection-

And that was one heck of a score on the Fett-

Thanks for the advice.

ALso, another thing, it seems like the kubricks are better if display, rather than still in package. Yeahh....I really feel bad about taking the packages off. SIghhhhh..........

Yes, kubricks were meant to be free. Except maybe some carded buggers that get near the $200 mark, they might need to stay put. But at least they can be seen clearly in their package  ;D

They can be found on eBay, here in our classified forums, or from various overseas e-tailers.

They are not normally available from regular retail outlets in the USA.

Well, despite promising myself I wouldn't buy any of these things...I bought one of these things! Just the basic Kubrick ANH Han Solo. And this is one cool little guy! Now I feel the urge to buy him some friends!  ;D

At least this is all happening around my birthday... ;)

The best place to look for individual figures is to head to eBay.  There are a few places that sell individual figures, but most are sold out since it's been so long since we've had new figures.

Greetings!

I'm not really a newbie to Kubricks, but I am a newbie to board. After being a long-time lurker, I figured it was a good idea to actually participate!

I guess I'm more of a medium-core Kubrick collector, having all of the standard series figures (except for part of S1 and all of S4), but I would like to get into some of the more limited (albeit pricier) figures. I have a smattering of other Kubrick figures from Lupin, Trigun and Reservoir Dogs, and I also collect some Habro 3 3/4" and Sideshow 12". Space and money have definitely become factors!

Anyway, wanted to say hi. I'm posting this exact post on Kubrick Nation too - also a long-time lurker locale.

Hi Wampachow, welcome!

There are some pretty hardcore kubrick-heads around here, as I'm sure you noticed.

Well, pending the successful completion of a purchase from JesseVader08, I'll join the ranks of the rest of you kubrick-a-holics.  I purchased the Luke X-Wing Pilot, Luke Jedi Knight, and possibly the Scout Trooper.  Let the madness begin...

Hey guys, for someone who's never looked into these before, what was the original price for the 400% Han and Luke in Stormtrooper Disguise figures?  I'm interested in getting these and want to know what the baseline was before I start looking.  Thanks.

At the start, you could pre-order them for around $62 (US), but that did not include shipping...

HLJ has the 400% Luke and Han Stormtroopers listed for pre-order!  :o   :o

Early bird special for both: 7,238 yen. Approx $62.18 US each.

I think with the shipping to the USA, the end price was closer to $80-90 each depending on how you had them shipped here.

Hey guys, got some question for you.  Any idea how much a Kubrick retails for in Japan?  Are they readily available in stores in Japan?  hat stores over there sell them?? The reason I ask, is I have a neighbor that is from Japan and I'm wondering how hard it would be to give her a wish list and send her people out hunting.  Thanks in advance!

Send her people?  Is she the Japanese Emperor?   ;)  I've never been to Japan, but I recall reading elsewhere that these are hard to find, even in Japan.  I'm sure that they have toy/comic shops with product available.  You should just give her a list of what you want and what you're willing to pay and have her go from there.

On average, when they are new releases, the MSRP is about 924 Yen ($8 US) if you were to buy them in singles in a retail store in Japan (but you can find cheaper prices if you pre-order them or buy in bulk).

However, since we are at least 1 year after the last series, most things that you'd find in a collector/hobby store in Japan would end up costing roughly the same as what you'd pay on eBay.  The higher ratio figures will be cheaper, the rarer figures and chases will cost more.

Are they readily available in stores in Japan?

Like I said above, they are readily available when they are first released, but since Series 7 came out last November, I imagine you'd be hard pressed to find stores that still have a large supply of them.

Guys, I bought a figure from someone in Hong Kong a few weeks ago and he sent me a tracking number, but no info on the company he used to ship.  I just contacted him about the company he uses, but want to hear from JD members too.  When you guys have purchased from overseas in the past, what companies have your sellers used?  I want to track this item, but can't right now.  Any info would be appreciated.

I've traded with a few guys overseas, but it has always come through the USPS, and I've never received a tracking number.  I tried to buy delivery confirmation for something I was sending overseas a while back and the USPS said they couldn't do that on international shipments, but maybe someone like Fed Ex can.

Almost everything I've purchased from Japan has come EMS shipped via Japan Post.   It allows for tracking, with a number that works through either the Japan Post site or good old USPS site.  This makes it much easier as I know how/when to expect it to clear customs and can track it easier...

I don't know the companies but in the UK all my Kubricks have been delivered by the Royal Mail - the US equivalent is the USPS. I'm guessing the sellers all used their own countires standard postal service - I've had stuff from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan with tracking and needing to be signed for on delivery.

Never had a problem yet though.....

Kind of the same up here Jeff, easy tracking & mine mostly comes Purolator which is most common & no customs or Canada post which I get customs. All depends what happens went it does hit customs for clearance I guess.  :-\

Question about Chase Figures... As I understand it the 2:48 or 3:48 Chase figures are usually (always?) in the same box of 12 Figures.  What about the 1:48 (1:96) chases?  Are those in the same box of 12 as the 2:48 chases or a separate box or random?
Title: Re: Kubrick Newbies - Questions and Advice

What about the 1:48 (1:96) chases?  Are those in the same box of 12 as the 2:48 chases or a separate box or random?

There has never been a reliable, confirmed box of 12 that contained all of the chase figures.  In every series of Star Wars Kubricks so far, it has worked out like this:

Each Master Case of 48 figures contains 4 boxes of 12:
 - 1 box of 12 contains one of the "high-ratio" chase figures from that series (1:48 or 1:96)
 - 1 box of 12 contains the "low-ratio" chase figure from that series (2:48, 3:48, or 4:48)
 - 2 boxes of 12 contain no chase figures  :(

Now, there is no guarantee the trend will continue, but basically, you have a 50/50 chance of your box containing any chase figures.  And if it is a chase figure box, you have a 50/50 chance of it being the "rare" chase box or the "common" chase box.

Thought I'd share a little more detail about past cases:

Basic Series come in cases of 48.
Four Boxes of 12

As far as the 1:48 figures go...the pattern as of late is that you get one or the other in your case, not both! (This is for anyone new or anyone who has not paid attention! ) There was a pattern with certain series as far as which one you could expect in your case depending on if it was from Japan or Hong Kong, but as of late I think its been totally random.

As far as 2:48 or 3:48 Figures go...they will all be in the same box of 12 NOT spread throughout the case of 48.

For the most part there are three Chase figures per Series:

Two 1:48 (example series 6: Tarkin & Imperial Officer)  you get one or the other in a case of 48
One 2:48 (example series 6: Wedge) both Wedge figures will be in the same box of 12

I made this list from JD, our Bricks N Beer events and other sources:

So I've been going hog wild on Kubricks for the last two months.... so I'm not sure I'm really a newbie :)  However, this seems like the best place to ask this question.

Is there any "fix" that you guys know of for Kubes with "springy" legs.  My newest and most expensive figure - Yakface - has a right leg that kind of springs out and backwards causing it to be impossible to stand completely straight up with both legs parallel.  Its a shame to have spent so much money on one of these guys and have him stand just a bit off kilter.  Regardless, he's still cool as hell and is certainly worthy of display!

I have had some success at fixing that problem by tying the legs up with the little clear bands that come on the Hasbro figures.

Just save one the next time you get a basic figure and wrap it around the legs for a little while and see if that helps. ;)

I have some of them set on the plastic tiered shelves you can buy for kithen cabinets (to organize spices). And some of them have such odd leg positions that they move just a little (sort of pivoting) when I open and close the cabinet doors. After a few times, a number of them will be facing eachother sideways, and I wonder what they are doing when the doors are closed...

So over the last 2 months or so, I am Sith and myself have been on a Kubrick buying rampage.  I've managed to pick up just about every common Kubrick and most of the boxed sets via people selling here, at Kubrick Nation, and through eBay.  I'm afraid to post my total but I can say that my "average" price per Kubrick is between $13 and $14.  Some have been as low as $5 and some (Yakface) have been more than $80.

One thing I've noticed, there are always Kubricks for sale, so look around and wait for the best deals.

All Exclusives are one per address.
Only available inside Japan to Memebers of Medicom Club.
Some Exclusives offered are under a Lottery system when the Numbers are limited, so you can request to buy it, but if your name is not picked you are out of luck.
Both of these will be Lottery.

I just ordered 12 Johnny Lightning cases from Troys Toys.  Price was $6.50 each and a flat $8 for shipping, no matter how many you buy.  This is the only e-tailer I've found that still has these listed as in-stock.

A Master Case (48 Kubrick) has 4 boxes of 12 Kubricks .  Each box of 12 contains one set of six kubricks (some in duplicate but not an entire series in duplicate).  So you'll get 4 total basic sets (24 Kubricks) and if the chase ratio holds true, you'll get 2 "common" chases in on of those boxes of 12 and 1 "rare" chase in the master case (1:96).  There are 2 rare chases and one is packed in every other case (so 2 full master cases would get both rare chase).

More information than you asked for, but I hope it helps.

I thought that the pulling of chases was dependent on were they cases came from? Hong Kong cases got one chase and Japan cases got the other.

So, if you buy 2 cases, both from the same source, you'd get 2 of the same chase figures.

Am I right here? Jeff? Scott? Dan? Anybody?

The chase figures have varied somewhat, and occassionally figure variations corresponded to one or the other location (cantina band members are an example). There have even been chase figures that took the place of a regular figure in the rotation leaving you short of a regular basic set of 6 (yakface came in the gamorrean box, meaning you are short one gamorrean guard if you got yak face).

Series 7 Jeff got 7-8 mastercases from Robby, and there were some of each rare (anakin old man and yak). So in series 7 (and I believe 6) there was no difference between the mastercases from mainland or hong-kong.

The short answer is, we won't know until a bunch of master cases have been cracked what the breakdowns will be in the next wave, or if they are tied to where they originate.

I couldn't find this on the board, but can somebody tell me how many basic sets you get on average from a full case ?

On average, in a Master Case you will get:
 3-4 basic sets of 6
 2-4 "easy" chase figures
 1 "hard" chase figures
and a bunch of common figures.

If you look through our various Kubrick Features (http://www.jedidefender.com/features.php), you'll find a section in each feature that talks about case rations and things for each series.  Lots of info on there on the breakdown of the chase figures and such.

So in series 7 (and I believe 6) there was no difference between the mastercases from mainland or hong-kong.

Correct.  There really haven't been any "true" differences between the HK and Japan cases since the Cantina Band variants in Series 3.  For the most part, the chases are pretty well divided among the sources.  Like Dan said, for Series 7, my Master Cases from Robby (all Japan boxes) had a pretty even breakdown of the chase figures.  Out of 7 Master Cases, we found 4 Yak Face and 3 "Old Guy" Anakin figures.

btw. are there any ideas on how the ratios for S9 will be.

Not yet, we will need to wait until closer to release to know the ratios...

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forums and relatively new to Kubricks. I have most of the Alien/Aliens Kubricks, but I had put off getting the Star Wars stuff since there was so much of it and many of them seemed so expensive. But I finally couldn't resist any longer and bought one box of 12 from series 6 and 7 (and I also have series 8 and 9 preordered). I'd like to get all the regular figures from the previous series, but it does look like it will be an expensive proposition, even if I don't want the chase figures.

That brings me to my question. I was lucky enough to get a Veers chase in one of my boxes, and I see that it's relatively valuable. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to try and get more (or all!) of the chases, or if I should just try and be satisfied with the main figures. I'm thinking of selling Veers and using the proceeds to buy some more regular figures from the earlier series. I don't really see myself spending lots of money for a single Kubrick, so it may not be realistic to try and collect chases, but I might find that after I get the regular figures that I just have to have the chases...  :-\

Also, does anyone have any regular figures from series 1 to 5 that they'd like to sell?  ;D
Title: Re: Kubrick Newbies - Questions and Advice

Welcome icruise! Just in time for two series to hit back to back, not a bad time to get in as it should get very exciting in the next 6 months or so-

I picked up the 1st three sets loose off of ebay not long after they were released. Then I began ordering boxes with series 4 and 5, and master cases with 6 and 7. Having a mindset of just getting the basic figures is a good way to start- it keeps the goal manageable and you'll probably be surprised how quickly you get there.

If I were in your shoes, I would absolutely hang on to the Veers. Finding a chase figure is just such a rare thing, he may become a centerpiece in your collection, and will always be a conversation piece when you explain Kubricks to others. The first Chase I found opening a box was a Luke Stormtrooper- and when I open up my cabinet, I see him and remember that.

You can always pick and choose which chases to get as time goes on, I have passed on the series 3 vinyl cape jawa so far myself due to price and its' looking almost identical to the regular version. Unless someone dumps one for way cheap, I will probably never own one, but it doesn't bother me in the least. The other chase figures from the early series I picked up little by little between regular releases. Since Medicom took the last year and a half off, it was a good time to do a lot of catch-up.

I know I have some regular releases still available- I'll check my stash and send you a private message.

Enjoy the Star Wars bricks, and you picked a great forum to join. There are many knowlegable collectors here, and a great database of the releases.

When I started collecting Kubricks about 6 months ago I had the same thought, I would just get the main figures and not worry about the chases.  As I finished off the main characters I realized that I really wanted the chases too.  My advice, keep the Veers because you may regret getting rid of it later on.  Especially if you're just going to use the money to buy more bricks...  However, if you do ultimately decide to get rid of it, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands ;D.

Don't sell Veers now.  I honestly think you'd regret it down the line.  My friend I am Sith  and I are perfect examples, he was more than happy to just get regular series.  However, eventually we (him and I) both caved and started getting the chases too.  Once you get past the "are you kidding me, $90 for that?!?" phase, collecting the chases becomes quite enjoyable.  Given that you "lucked" into one of the most expensive chases right now, I'd say sit tight and enjoy him!!

Welcome.

I'd echo what the other guys have said - keep Veers.  I got in at the very start on series 1 and decided no chase because the Fetts were $100+ at the time.  Then Indy came out and I absolutely had to have him.  Well, then it just got carried away to the point where I had to have all the chase figures.  It's likely to happen to you as well, unless you have some form of willpower severely lacking in the members of this board.

But be warned, going after those chase pieces will be a very expensive proposition, you're looking at a couple of hundred per series minimum in pricing.  Some are definitely cheaper but those 1/96 pieces are killer.

I got mine from National Console Support (NCSX). Of course I didn't know much about the distribution of the figures or about how unlikely it might be to get a chase at this point in the game when I ordered them, so I guess I was lucky in more ways than one.

And thanks for all of the advice everyone. I'm going to hold onto Veers for a little while at least.

lol!
I know that feeling.
I've changed my tune though because of other priorities, like a roof on the house!
I am happy I kept Indy though, even if there is another one on the way.
I like the chase a bit more than the new one, the idol is just great.
Another non-Star Wars Kube chase I kept is the Kane Chest burster from the Alien line, that's one of my favorite Kubricks ever.
The only 1:96 Star Wars Kube I have now is Tarkin, who I have to keep so I can put him with Dooku.
I think its cool to have two Hammer Stars that were in the SW films in Kubrick form.

And welcome aboard, but be warned...Kubricks are evil.
Despite all the $$ reasons I gave for giving up being a completest, I have to say that finding another Japanese line to collect like the Koto Magnets helped BUT I'm having trouble with a few of those chases, which are cheaper, but seem to be harder to get than the Kubrick Chases.

I would keep the Veers too, it always starts out with 'I'll just collect the regular figures....' then you stumble onto a chase and you start thinking..... :) The rationale you'll probably settle on is something like 'yeah they're expensive, but they only come out with 4 super hard to find chases a year and that's not bad....especially compared to my Medicom 12 inch figs which run 150 a piece and probably produce 5 to 10 figs a year.....' OK this was MY thinking anyway! :)

I'm looking to have my Kubricks cherry popped. Between listening to Jeff, Scott, and Dale talk about them all the time and looking through the pictures of everybody's nice Kubrick collections, I'm thinking I'd like to start one of my own.

I've just about stopped collecting anything prequel related. I'm going to keep that going and stick with just the OT Kubricks, and I'll probably stay away from the 400% Kubricks as well.

I guess I'm looking for some advice from the many veterans around here. Where is a good place to start? I'm not ready to go after any chase figures just yet, so I'd kind of like to start with the cheaper figures. What is the best bet for starting out, the classifieds here or eBay?

For older series, I'm not sure you'll find much around the forums, maybe just spare cheapies like Spirit Anakin, Ewoks, and a few other odds and ends.

In the long run, to play catch-up on the past few series of OT stuff, eBay will probably be your best bet... and you'll need some patience.  With a new series released, everyone comes out of the woodwork to try to sell old stuff at inflated prices hoping to cash in on newbies.

Your best bet is to watch eBay and you should be able to find sets of the basic 6 from a series in the $40-60 range.  This is the best option, because if you buy the cheapie singles for $5, chances are you;ll end up shelling out more than you want to for the lower ratio basic figures which are often only available in sets.

Also, take a bit to read through this thread, it's chocked full of good tips and what not on where/when to buy... :)

As someone who just got started about 6 months ago I can offer some advice.  First, they call them crackbricks for a reason.  Second, they aren't cheap in the end.  Third, they call them crackbricks for a reason.

Your best bet is hitting the boards first.  I saw that someone (can't remember who) is selling a few of the recent ones for $5 each.  Good price for sure.  I've also got some extras that I'm thinking about unloading so I'll make sure you can get first crack too.  You'll get fair prices from fellow collectors.

After that you have to start searching eBay.  Be prepared to overpay for shipping as most sellers are still coming from Hong Kong, Japan or somewhere else in the pacific-asia regions.

To get started on the basic series, you can get Kubricks for $5-10 apiece, the earlier series always cost a bit more.  Once you get to chases, you'll can spend almost anything.  However, keep watching and a deal will pop up every now and then.  I just saw a Hibernation Sickness Han chase end at $2.25!! ($8 shipping).  THat's a great price.

Careful what you say about prequel stuff in these parts, people get mighty testy about that sort of thing.

I'd think later series (5-7, maybe 3-4) for regulars could be had fairly cheaply on ebay these days, but you don't see them all that often that's for sure.  Right now might be a really good time though, as there has been a long drought between series, so I think sellers just tucked away stock until interest came up again, which is now.  So I'd watch there.

Series 1 and 2 are pricey though, so buy a set and be prepared to pay.

A big issue is that there are lots and lots of common bricks out there, like the Tie Pilot or Royal Guard that you can get cheap.  But the issue comes from the 1/12 ratio stuff or 2/12 stuff like the Gamorrean Guard figure.  Not many of those singles around, so buying sets might be your best bet to avoid the headaches of trying to track down the less common singles.

And I still have a 400% Vader that's extra if yer lookin' ;)

Just so you have an idea what roughly the series sets go for Ryan & anyone else, I have kept a record of what the completed have gone for for the past while. Prices may vary from time do to bidding & bin's & usually the time they are posted as per no reserve & early in the morn plus also take in account of where they are auctioned from for shipping costs.

Basic sets:

Series 1: $76.-$98.
Series 2: $77.-$82.
Series 3: $76.-$86.
Series 4: $90-$128.
Series 5: $33.-$66.
Series 6: $31.-$36.
Series 7: $20-$70.
Series 8:  N/A but soon.

I have to catch up on the rest of the Kuby prices as per variants/carded/boxsets/400% etc...

They vary too but like you mentioned, you just want the basic.

I wonder if Medicom did not place the TOMY sticker on the card, is there any residue from it being removed? I can't see this carded figure being faked.

Okay, so I don't consider myself to be a Kurick noob exactly, but definitely not the hard core collector that most of the Kubie fans here at JD are.  I have picked up pretty much all of the "basic" regular series figures at this point and was thinking of trying to track down some of the harder to find chases.

I checked out Evilbay, but ran into two issues: #1 - I can't tell what's real and what's a fake.  Seems like figures like a Han Stormtrooper might be pretty easy to fake.  #2 - there really isn't much of the older stuff out there right now.  Anyone know of a good source to buy some of the older chases?  I'm not looking to get the really expensive ones, but items like the Hong Kong Cantina Band Member and Han in Stormtrooper disguise seem like possibilities.

Lastly, is there a thread dedicated to showing the best deal on future pre-orders?  I'm totally confused on the best way to go about ordering S10 or the upcoming Fett set.  I've pretty much either picked up a box or leftovers from someone else's cases in the past.  Not looking to get a master case myself, but I might be game for picking up a box if anyone needs someone to split costs.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I checked out Evilbay, but ran into two issues: #1 - I can't tell what's real and what's a fake.

Just ask!  That's one of the reasons there is the eBay Kubrick Scams and Fakes (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14561.0) thread.  Most fakes that folks spot get posted in there, also names of some known "fakers" too.  If you see something and don't know if it's legit, just post and someone will be able to help.

#2 - there really isn't much of the older stuff out there right now.  Anyone know of a good source to buy some of the older chases?

In the USA, it's mainly eBay and/or forum classifieds.  It is sort of dry, but if he pattern holds true (and it usually does), when Series 10 is officially released, most sellers try to do a little house-cleaning at the same time.  They know folks will be searching for S10, so they throw older stuff out there for folks like yourself that may be looking to back-fill.

In addition, you might try some of the Japanese importer sites like Toy Tokyo (http://www.toytokyo.com/) or Ningyoushi (http://www.ningyoushi.com/Kubricks_and_Be_rbricks_s/25.htm).  Places like that sometimes have older stock, but usually chases are a bit spendier that route.

If folks stumble across good deals, they usually post in the thread for that series.  I've sort of lost track of which site that is still taking orders at this point is the best deal right now.  I think HLJ had a decent price and some "National Console Exchange" place (don't recall the link right now) was also decent, but I'm not sure if either place is still taking orders for S-10 or S-Fett anymore.  Maybe Dale can chime in with the best deals at the moment...

1st of all, Welcome to the Kuby asylum.   :D  Yeah, crackbricks they are known as. Once you get 1, you're hooked.  ;D

The only known Kuby fake that has ever cropped up thus far is the Logray (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/files/gallery/Collectibles/Kubrick/Series_3/Logray/logray.jpg) chase. Tho I have never seen one inhand, reports in the past had discrepancies from the original.

As for the Han Stormtrooper, none that I know of have been faked tho it is quite possible but to me not worth the effort for a low end chase.

One other that is not faked but can be pond off as a chase is the carded Fett from the Bounty Hunters - Individually carded set  (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i306/DSJcdn/Kubricks%20Series%206/StarWarsKubrickCardedSet.jpg). Remember, both are the same (http://www.jedidefender.com/images/kubricksmisc/Kubricks1Boba2Red.jpg). I have suspected that this has happened ripping the Fett off the card & selling him as a chase. I saw too many Bounty Hunter card sets being offered on the bay without the carded Fett.

Lastly, is there a thread dedicated to showing the best deal on future pre-orders?  I'm totally confused on the best way to go about ordering S10 or the upcoming Fett set.  I've pretty much either picked up a box or leftovers from someone else's cases in the past.  Not looking to get a master case myself, but I might be game for picking up a box if anyone needs someone to split costs

Sorry, no individual thread dedicated for that. We mostly post what we know/find in the threads that are partained to Kuby sreis & what not in question. Best to have a read up on the threads of the newer stuff coming out. I'm sure you'll find the
information but I will have to check. Some places stopped taking orders as not to over order & have cancelled preorders due to not getting the allotment.

To find older chase figures at a site online, I would have to check into that. I don't know as I really don't look for them.

Edit: I just saw Jeff's response but no way in hell I am editing this. LOL!  :P

Okay, I went ahead and bought this and got free shipping because I ordered something else from the seller.  Yay!  It arrived yesterday and looks cool next to my Japan version.  In addition tot he 2 flue-like pieces, it comes with some kind of large bent horn devise and a bent wire frame that looks like it should plug into the bigger gray horn thing.  There's even a hole for it on the horn thing, but mine doesn't seem to fit and I can't see how it would fit onto the figure anyway.  I'm not seeing the wire frame thing pictured in the checklist either.  Anyone got an inside scoop on this or know what the heck I'm talking about?

Hey Everybody!

I'm a long time Kubrick collector who bought a couple of Star Wars series when they were first released.  I've always wanted to collect the rest of the Star Wars Kubricks that I missed but never could afford it.  Well I've went on a little bit of a buying spree lately and am nearing completion of the Original trilogy, sans most chases which I feel are too expensive for the character you get in most cases.  Still there are some chases that I want really bad.  I was wondering if anyone would tell me a good price a few items can be had for.

Grand Moff Tarkin - I want this Kubrick so bad!!!
Logray
Early Bird Set

Thanks in advance!!!

Moff Tarkin usually sells for 175.00-200.00
Logray  175.00-220.00
Early Bird set- 100.00-135.00

Good luck finding them cheaper. If you do and can afford it, buy them. I still need all 3 of those but thr prices are just too high for me.

I have been lurking this forum for awhile.  Decided to finally introduce myself.  I recently got into Kubricks.  My first purchase was a box of series 10 with no chases, but I really enjoy them they look awesome.

Today my Bobba box came from NCS and I got a L-Rockett CHASE! Soooo pumped.  ALSO I bought 2 boxes from my other friend who runs no idea records and I have a series 6 and 7 box to go open right now! **edit, not chases in my series 6 or 7 box, but my series 7 had 2 gamorrean guard boxes, no leia and one felt lighter than the other, so I'm thinking yak face???  Nope, leia was just in a gamorrean box.

Oh well!

just curious on if its a good idea to open box sets just to display them in Medicom cases. I love how they look stacked in the cases. Not sure if I will ever sell them, hopefully not, but do you think they lose a lot of value when opened? Sometimes I see some figures listed seperatley and they sell pretty good. Just so you know. I have no intentions of ever selling them but I want to protect my investment a little. Please share your ideas and opinions.

I guess it depends on your display.  I like having a little compartment box for each guy, so I tear into any kind of packaging, be it boxes, cards, etc. If you just have your figs on a shelf, then I would totally keep them boxed, though I still might open them up to take a look at the fig.  Some of the detail on the back and being able to repose them is part of the fun of collecting these (for me anyway).

It depends on the collector on how they want to display them. If you want to display them carded & boxed like me then not a problem. If you like them displayed loose then no problem again. If you are not going to sell them then loose is the way to go & limits the space of the cardboard but like I said, it depends on the collector. You do what you want to do & if you are happy with that then that's all that counts.  ;)

I am an investment collector myself. By that I mean I thoroughly enjoy all of the Star Wars memoralbilia I purchase and only collect those things that appeal to me personally. I also open and display favorites, including Kubricks and the animated Clone Wars stuff. However, when it comes to really expensive items, including some of the Kubrick boxed sets and carded figures, I just can't bring myself to open them. From a pure toy collector mentality, packaging completeness and condition is almost as important as the toy itself. I strongly believe that in the long run (say decades from now) those Kubricks that are still at home in their original packaging will be worth substantially more than those that are not. This is especially true if the packaging still has the factory seals intact. I currently limit my 'opening' to basic sets. I only display chases, carded, and boxed set Kubricks if I have been able to obtain them already opened or loose. Oscar has some great acrylic cases available that are perfect for display of the carded Kubs also. Just one opinion...

Along the same lines, I've got a question for y'all: Does anyone have any idea how many Star Wars Kubricks are manufactured? For example, how many Series 1 Boba Fett's are there out there? Hundreds? Thousands? Millions??? How about the chases? I realize some are 1:48, 1:96, etc., but what exactly does that mean? In trying to figure a fair value for something, overall appeal, desirablility, and scarcity are right up there in importance. Is it really outrageous to pay, say $200 for a 2003 BAPE carded Boba Fett when only 150 or so exist? I personally am much more comfortable in my investment doing that than paying $200+ for a Series 10 1:96 Tion Medon chase of which there may be ten thousand (for all I know) floating around out there. I am a completist myself and certainly understand the desire to just 'get them all' by any means necessary. But at some point, I believe value and scarcity have to come into the picture. Any thoughts?

I don't know specific numbers released.  I know that DST and Hot Toys are both very secretive about quantities produced of non-exclusives, and wouldn't be surprised if Medicom was the same.  However, I can tell you that value will be determined by not only production number, but demand.  A rare, carded Boba Fett may exist, but given that there are umpteen thousand loose versions of the same figure, and 20 or so variants of him, his price won't be likely as high as a distinctive, reasonably hard to find and somewhat popular one-off character in the short or long run, in my opinion.

As for what something is worth, that depends on how much you want it of course.  If it doesn't seem outrageous to you, then it isn't.  If it does, then it is.  If you are a Kubrick completist, however, then I pity you and your bank account.

As for your belief that these will be worth more in decades to come, I respectfully disagree.  I don't think the Kubrick line will last that long, and when figures stop being produced, I think interest will wane and value will go down.  Just my hunch.

Hi folks, my names Bobajode and I'm addicted to SW Kubricks. There I've said it, I feel better now. I'm so addicted to these little guys, I've spent a fair amount of cash in the last couple of months. I've bought series 1,6,7,8,9 and Bobafett series and a few random older figures all from ebay, I think I'm getting the completionist bug. I've just found this site and got a lot of decent info so thanks everyone.
I've been buying a few figures that have been opened but the inner clear plastic bag has not been opened, so my question is this, do you guys think these have legitamately not been opened or have you found that traders reseal them to increase the price.
Another question is who are decent traders on ebay, I live in the uk and have traded with robxav0 and Honorius from Japan both seem good. Any help's much appreciated, cheers.

I'd say they are legit.  The only way to find a Chase SW Kubrick is take them out of the box and foil wrappers.  In addition, its easier to ship them without a box so that happens a lot too.

By the way, welcome!!  Finest group of Kubrick Collectors I know hang out here.

That's because they're using a trackable and insured postal service. I find it annoying as hell but I understand why they do it. Like JediJman I also recommend contacting the seller and asking them about changing the postage.

I'm not positive, but I think that there are indeed some coloration differences between the two, most notably, the pouch behind the seat.

I'm in the UK & although I'm just a lurker I buy most of my stuff from the US,Japan & HK/China. Whether my opinion is worth anything being a newbie & all  ;)  but you should also consider 'HM Customs' who often tend to charge import duty on high cost 'declared' items from the US yet tend to turn a blind eye to virtually everything I buy from HK/China & Japan. Until you get stung you tend to dismiss this as 'happening to someone else' but can often add up to a fair sum of money. Just saying.

I bought my Luke and Leia set boxed and sealed, and a loose Bikerscout set from Stealthtank, and they are identical as far as I can tell. Color, weathering, even button colors are all the same.

I don't know about the process for retailers/distributers, and I don't recall if "gift" was selected or not, but I've never had to pay a customs fee for any package received from another country containing toys/collectibles.

I'm sure if Bill Clinton had sent a package overseas he would have put the correct item cost.

Surely Nixon would have been a better example anyway.

I prefer to buy things directly from the east nowadays. In contrary to the dollar, most people at the office have no clue what the exchange rate is of the yen and simply not bother. If your package gets singled out by the customs officer expect to pay tax + pay a handling fee + wait 1 to 2 weeks longer. On low values  that handling fee can be a real joy killer. Example:
Toys €41
Shipping €13
Tax €10.26
Handling Fee €12.50
Total increase in price €22.76 / €54 = 42%

And I would never classify Nixon as a good example.

A tactic for buying from US retailers is to get them to send  the items to a friend's address in the US.  The 'friend' is not committing any fraudulent act as he/she is under no obligation to know the value of the 'gift' that he/she is sending subsequently to the UK .

Post by: buttheadsmate on September 23, 2010, 06:50 AM
Karamazov80 .......now where have I seen that name before? ;D  Aren't you the Cosbaby fan?

To answer your question ........first realise that regards English language conventions ,British English is fundamentally different to American English. The use of  the double inverted commas ,"" ,are, for example ,used in both quotation & speech displays in American English whereas in British English they are (or should be) used in speech displays only . Whilst that is not absolutely relevant to your question it is of course essential to emphasise that the notation of each of our languages in their respective written forms may differ. My use of the single inverted commas ,in this instance the word 'friend' ,is another convention known as 'scare quote' which is simply a way of using a word although distancing oneself from its dictionary/thesaurus definition by placing the word within single inverted commas.  I used the word friend in such a manner to emphasise that the person sending the items is obviously a friend although in the eyes of the customs authorities he is an anonymous sender of items & not a retailer or an accomplice.  Check this out ......especially the last 3 words which undoubtedly refer to me http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/department/docs/punctuation/node31.html

I hope that 'helped'  ;)

Hello - I am relatively new to this Kubrick collecting. But quite addicted already.  ;) I recently got a Series 6 - Luke Skywalker in X-Wing Fighter Gear. He came in a sealed bag with the box. He looks great. But one of his arms is quite loose/floppy. Is this something that happens from time to time or does it mean it was damaged or is flawed in some way?

That is just the way some figures are.  A few of mine are like that too.  I also have a few figures where the legs won't stay exactly where you want them.  I think this is just due to the way the figures are put together - sometimes pieces are just a hair smaller or larger than they should be.

Welcome to the Kubrick addicts.  Shoot me a PM if you're looking to pick up other figures - I have tons of duplicates.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to remove arms from Star Wars kubricks, particularly protocol droids? Please don't say get a Wookiee to do it  ;) They are fictional characters and not very helpful in real world scenarios  :P

I thought it would be easy to give it a bit of force (seriously these puns are not intended) but I don't want to destroy it and the shoulder cover gets in the way. Even playing around with the removable limbs shiny C-3PO which is supposed to come apart I had to remove the whole chest section and head.

Very minor the Force Awakens spoilers to follow.

I've wanted to make an episode 7 C-3PO for a little while now (since someone posted blurry pictures of some crappy merch with an image of C-3PO and R2 on it) but now after Comic Con I'm more comfortable mentioning it and wanted to try and put a R-3po arm on C-3po. I've even got a spare R-3po and half a dozen different C-3po's to do the job.

A couple of comedians in here...

In regards to my above question I seem to recall iamsith doing some customs back in the day, I'm not sure if anyone has any knowledge on dismantling or breaking apart kubricks.

Now to the reason for my post, another question. Has anyone noticed the plastic of the outer robe of their Spirit of Obi Wan Kenobi deteriorating?

I was handling the kubrick recently and noticed the plastic of the robe was a bit tacky or sticky but the rest of the figure was fine. Being that the Spirit of Anakin is almost the exact same kubrick I checked that one too and it was in a similar condition. I has to be because of the softer plastic used and its translucentness, as opposed to the hard plastic of the translucent body and the solid plastic used on other kubricks which is fine.

I gave them a wash in warm soapy water and there's been an improvement.

Wow. Yes!  Both my spirit Obi and spirit Anakin have sticky capes.  I heated them up with a hairdryer to soften the plastic then slid the capes off.  Then I scrubbed them both down with dish detergent water and rinsed them off.  Dried and heated again with the hairdryer.   They were better but still sticky so I washed, rinsed, and dried them a second time.  I really scrubbed the surface inside and out, then rinsed in hot water for about a minute.  Cloth dried and now they look like new.  I had to heat them up one last time to make sure all the water dried and loosen the neck hole to slip them back on the figure.  We'll see if that lasts, but they look new again.  Thanks for the tip - I didn't have them on display so had no idea that was happening.

Yes, I did several customs back in the day.  Most of the brick torsos are glued so you have to break them apart.  I would remove the arms and go in with a razor blade along the side.  Once the blade was in slightly I would start to rotate it until I could see the two pieces coming apart.  Stick the blade in further and then give it a good turn and it should split in two.  You may end up with a small hole where you first went in with the blade, but if you are adding robes or when you put the arms back on it shouldn't be too noticeable.  You may also need to superglue the torso back together when you're done so that it stays together.  Hope that helps.

I made a few customs back in the day.  Depends on what you want to do, but for mine I just boiled and popped out the heads and limbs as needed.  I've since turned to just using a hot hair drier over boiling to soften the plastic, but haven't tried that with any Kubes.  Here are a few of my favorites.  I made a custom Clone Wars Armor Obi-Wan too, but can't find the picture of him.

Wow there hasn't been this much activity in here in ages.

Thanks I Am Sith and JediJman for the advice. I only want to remove the arms so I'll probably just go with the hairdryer method first,  in fact I might practice first on a cheap kubrick that can be easily replaced if damaged.

JediJman - I'm glad you where able to fix the problem.  I gave them a wash and dry a couple of times as mentioned and while they're not 100% better they're significantly better so I'm happy enough,  I'm not going to go to the extra hassle of removing the robes to clean underneath but it's good to know it's achievable.

I wonder how the ghost Yoda is fairing. I don't own one and I imagine most have remained on the card. I have no idea if it's made of the same material.

Edit: I just remembered they made a holo Leia and while I don't own it I remember the outer robe being a different material than the Anakin and Obi Wan. I also don't own the holo Vader from the exclusive 5-pack but I wonder what condition his cape is in?

I checked these figures out to make sure others didn't have the same problem.  My Holo Vader cape is fine and Holo Leia looks minty fresh.  I have Holo Yoda and Holo Maul, but they are both still on the card.  They look fine as far as I can tell, but would be good to know if anyone with loose versions found the same problem.

I have Holo Maul and Spirit Yoda loose and they both look fine.

I forgot about the holo Maul, but I wouldn't imagine there would be an issue with the newer releases like Maul, it will be interesting to revisit in a few years.

JediJman - is the cape/s on holo Vader made of a similar plastic to the spirit kubs, or is it closer to the regular Vader kub?

It's much more similar to the original vader.  Similar feel between the regular vader and holo in both the outer cape and inner skirt.  Holo Anakin and Obi robes feel like soft plastic, but the holo vader's is hard and unbending - like if you try to move it it might break.

Yeah I thought as much regarding Vader's cape. I imagine spirit Yoda and holo Maul's robes are of similar durability/thickness.

This in depth discussion about transparent robe durability, a phrase that has never been uttered in the history of the universe, got me distracted I was going to ask another question:

Is the helmet on the George Lucas Pilot (Jorg Sacul) carded kubrick stuck on or removable? I couldn't find a previous topic for this guy.

The helmet on Jorg Sacul is removable like on the other x-wing pilots.

Thanks.

I've been having all sorts of fun creating different rebel pilots in lego minifigure form, there's more helmet variation in the lego range, and I'd definitely like a Sacul to use as it's a more generic pilot helmet for some extra kubrick pilots but I can't justify it as far as the cost goes, let alone multiples.
