I am really, really hoping to get my spending back below the $1500 per year mark this year.

I haven't been able to keep my spending that low since I started the Kubrick thing in late 2004 (damn 'brick addiction), but that won't stop me from trying to limit things (and failing miseably) in 2008.  ;)

Well I am curious to know how much I spend a year as my collection has grown A LOT in these past two years, so I am in.

I'm in too.

I sort of got off base with my updates/totals towards the end of '07, but I'm in again this year.  I really hope to be cutting back significantly (I say that every year), so hopefully the totals will be more tolerable.  If Hasbro would just easy up on the figure releases per year a bit, that would help :).  I think money is going to be tighter this year for us, so things are going to have to be scaled back for me - or I'll be selling stuff to fund new purchases.

I attempted to do this last year and just couldnt beleive how much i was spending so i stopped. I figure iw ill try it again this year. At $0.00 so far, not bad for only being 2 days in.  ;D  ;)
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on January 2, 2008, 03:05 PM
I might opt back in again just for fun.  I'm mostly caught up on everything I want to be so that side is good.  The bad is that most of what I want isn't inexpensive (12-backs; MR helmets, Gentle Giant stuff).

So far, so good: $0 and while I've been on ebay while drinking, so far the restraint has been admirable.

Well three days into the year and I have made my first purchase.

I was able to buy the hardcover of the Star Wars Sacrifice book. it was 30% off and since my sis is a member of the book store i got an additional 10% of that to lower the book to $21. Now I don't have to wait for the paperback to come out :P

im still waiting for goldenagetoys to get wave 9 in though as me and my buddy pre-ordered a case to split.

Total so far: $21.42

Thus far: $176.81 US.

Let's see.  $176.81 during the first 3 days.  So since it's a leap year, we can calculate over 366 days you are on pace to spend $21,570.82.  :P

bought two McFarlene Hockey figures at $4.95 a piece at WM. Bobby Hull and Alew Tanguay. with tax it came out to $11.16

goldenagetoys also charged my buddies credit card so we should be recieving wave 9 sometime this week. so if we were to add that into my total now it would be.... $85.59
man this is tough seeing how much i am spending, and I am still trying to find a new good hockey stick. I'm thinking of getting another Bauer Vaper but $99.99 up here is a little much.

Hockey figures-11.16
Sacrifice hardcover-21.42
wave 9-53.01

Total: $85.59

I successfully kept track in 05 and 06 but failed to keep track in 07 (and 04 too) so I'm going to do my darndest to keep track in 08 and raise my record to 3-2.

So far: $9.69

I'll try again - last year was depressing, this year should be a lot better.

So far:

1 Gentle Giant AT-TE Tank Gunner Accessory Pack - $23.59

Total:  $23.59
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: evenflow on January 15, 2008, 11:18 AM
I figured I would give my half way mark intot he month.

Total = $179.98

And i thought i was doing well.  ::)
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: JangoTat on January 15, 2008, 10:16 PM
well goldenage never went through with charging my buddies account now and another friend of mine said something about them being out of stock on them so it looks like i wont be getting them :'(

although i able to pick up a white marine comic pack...at CDN retail :o

so subtracting the wave 8 case and adding in the comic pack my new total comes to...

hockey figures= 11.16
sacrifice book = 21.42
Wm comicpack= 16.89

total= $49.47

I am happy it is still pretty low but boy do i wish that wave 8 case was still coming :-\

EDIT*** instead of double posting ill just add my new total.
i bought an ewok two pack at a comic shop and got a graphic novel on clearance price. both together the price came up to $19.87

New total is now: $69.34
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: evenflow on January 29, 2008, 08:50 AM
I think its safe to post this now, as i dont intend to buy anything in the next 3 days.

January Total - $1058.44  :o

That is pretty much insane considering that at the half way mark i was only at $179.98.

If it was for my 3 big purchases (Takara Chewbacca, Sideshow Palaptine set, and Hot Toys battle-damaged Predator 2)  i would only be back 511.94. Not terrible...and works much better with the half way mark.
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: JangoTat on January 29, 2008, 06:01 PM
after finnaly getting some time me and some buddy ran down to a Toronto comic shop called Silver Snail.
picked up a lando,ani,4-lom figure at $11.28 (tax already included in it) each and the omega squad EE bp. kinda mad that they didnt have the ARC pack because i know i will probably never find it at a reasonable price now :(

so my new total for January is now...

$148.40

9 more figures and ill be finished with TAC 07...of course that is if my wave 9 box comes after recently getting a reply from goldenage saying they are still waiting on hasbro.

Well, the month of January was simple enough - and a nice break I guess.

TAC Comic Pack (WM Exclusive) - Boba Fett and RA-7 - $9.88

Total for January=$9.88
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on February 1, 2008, 11:00 AM
Gentle Giant AT-TE Accessory Kit - $24
Marvel Select Emma Frost $15
Gentle Giant Royal Guard bust $22.50 ($34.45 w/shipping)
Marvel Legends Ronan BAF $35.51 shipped
Marvel Legends loose set of 8 Fantastic Four figures $28.00
Battlestar Galactica Titanium classic Galactica $6.00 (thanks Mike)
Hasbro comic pack with Keller/Marine. $16.00
McFarlane 3" Winnipeg Jets Bobby Hull $30 with shipping
Kubrick Blue Stars preorder with shipping $60

January total: $248.96

Gentle Giant stuff $58.45
Hasbro/SW Stuff $22
Kubrick Stuff $60
Marvel Stuff $78.51

I'll get back about $30 of that when I resell the FF figures I don't want.  I might also be able to offload one of my Hull's for about $20 up here to reduce the price by $50 in total.  The Kubrick was a surprise purchase, but I think it'll end up being a good deal.  Not digging that I'm paying nearly double for comic packs versus the US price.  Blech.  It does illustrate how it sucks to be a collector outside the US though.

So if that's my average per month I'm looking at $3000 this year?  I'm not digging that, it needs to come down.  Going forward I can't see myself getting that much stuff really.  I like some of the Hasbro stuff, but not all of it.  I can think of a couple of high end items I'd like to pick up this year: MR Obi-Wan weathered light saber hilt and if Sideshow does a nice 1/4 Indy statue.  Kubrick chase figs if they're OT might fit that high end (>$100) profile as well.  Never quite know what GG will do with busts either.

well starting off Feb small but hopefully that will change once and if TAC 08 wave 1 ever shows up. I was able to find a saga legends sandtroopers on cdn card at my local WM though. its still using the TSC sculpt but its new and im happy

total so far : $9.54
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: JesseVader08 on February 4, 2008, 11:31 PM
I started January with a bang, largely due to catching up on Galactic Heroes, basic carded figures and comic packs that I was unable to get before the end of '07.  I have to thank Matt (JediMoses) for helping me spend $297 on that one transaction.  ;)

I also grabbed another handful of Titanium ships, a Mighty Muggs Vader, and a few other McQuarrie figures.

In total I spent $485, but managed to sell off $140 worth of older stuff, so my net for January was $340.
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on February 5, 2008, 11:14 PM
That net crap is just wussing out.  Did you factor in how much money you lost by selling stuff later rather than just not buying it at all?  No, of course not.  Count your real totals, be a man.   ;)

February:
Ovechkin variant $14
Futurama figs (2) $30
ML Black Knight $12
Han Solo Character Key $38 with shipping
Darth Sidious Character key $75 with shipping. :-X
Gentle Giant old Obi-Wan Kenobi bust $36.12 with shipping
Gentle Giant gummi-Darth Maul bust $64.61 with shipping

  :-[ Ok so the february total is $1127.78. So my assumptions were correct more than January. Grand total fo far $2186.22.

March has to be lower, i dont plan on any expensive buys like the Kubrick box set so I should be safe. Lets see if i can keep it under 800.00

After a light (one comic pack) January, February seemed to pick up a little bit for me.  Here's what I picked up this month:

Evolutions The Fett Legacy - $19.99
Evolutions The Jedi Legacy - $19.99
TAC Comic Pack (Lt. Jundland/Lt. Shan) - $9.99
TAC Comic Pack (Commander Keller/Galactic Marine) - $9.99
TAC Basic Figures (Obi-Wan/Vader/2-1B/Kashyyyk Trooper/Po Nudo) - $6.63 each
TAC AT-AP - $19.99

Total for February=$113.10

Total for January=$9.88
Total for February=$113.10

Total for 2008=$122.98
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on February 29, 2008, 10:05 PM
February total: $269.73
January total: $248.96

2007 total thus far: $518.69

So up a bit, but not bad considering there are two Gentle Giant busts and two Acme character keys in there.  Right now I'm very ok with this kind of spending.  Still, at $3K a year, that's an easy Harley payment :-\

First purchase in March:
Gentle Giant Obi-Wan in clone armor : $64.61 shipped
GG first Vader, second Vader, ESB Yoda, CIII sandtrooper busts $255
VTSC Snowtroopers x 6 - how could I not at $3.94 each?  $26.48

I'm not counting the Sith Evo set since I returned three figures at the same time and it came out as a net zero. :)

ok so to sum up my total for feb after buying an evo pack last week.

Jan total = $148.40
Feb total = $158.91

year so far = $307.31

its not to bad i thought it would be more. the thing that scares me most is that in a few weeks it will get higher with waves 7.5,8 and wave 1 hitting local stores along side with the new evo packs and possibly comic packs soon enough. all i have left is 5 tac figures and 1 more double of the hawkbat and im done with that series. after that my next "big" army builder will be the K-trooper with an aim of getting 12 and 5 of each of TFU stormys. this year is really gonna hurt my wallet though with that at-te coming around the corner at a rumored $110 CDN.

I forgot to post my February haul!  I spent $205, but didn't sell anything (so Brent can't give me **** for "cheating" :P).

The majority of that was spent catching up on McQuarrie figures, plus the latest Japanese RC Droids, then a couple titaniums and older Star Tours astromechs.

This month should prove to be a lot more though...

and 2 vtac figures (han/leia) at 4.45 each

new March total= $180. 60

My dad was also kind enough to pay for a Gree and K-trooper for me, but since i didnt pay for it im not including it to my spending. Also after getting the k-trooper I have come to the conclusion that I will not army build him to a squad of 12 like I wanted to before hand. He is not what I expected him to be, but at the same time I dont want to have Gree stranded with only one trooper displayed next to him. So i have decided to only buy 4 more. that way I can display them in 2 rows of three with Gree being in the middle of the front row. Still no luck finding Wave 2  and the 5 TAC figures i am missing.

End of March, so:

Gentle Giant Obi-Wan in clone armor : $64.61 shipped
GG first Vader, second Vader, ESB Yoda, CIII sandtrooper busts $255
VTSC Snowtroopers x 6 - how could I not at $3.94 each?  $26.48

I'm not counting the Sith Evo set since I returned three figures at the same time and it came out as a net zero. :)

From that Vader lot I've sold off the CIII sandtrooper bust and will offload the Yoda and Vader too, so it should be that the original release Vader will net out to me at around about $130 8)  Still, the gross total for March was $346.09

March total: $346.09
February total: $269.73
January total: $248.96

2008 total thus far: $864.78

Now, if I was being a "Jesse" I'd be in great shape as I've sold about $200 worth of loose figures lately and about $500 worth of other stuff with another $200 pending.  So on a net basis I've actually made money this year.  Still, not liking that trend of spending more money each month.  I don't really want to spend $3500 on this stuff this year.

Just before march ended i picked up a Evo clone set. $33.89

March total= $214.49

Year so far= $521.80

I cant believe i have spent so much money. and yet i feel like I have found nothing.

April:

DragonBall Z history of Trunks movie= $25.80
Super DragonBall Z (PS2) = $11.28
Star Wars Revelation= $ 10.17
Guitar Hero 3= $101.69 (cant beleive i bought it)

EDIT
Well last week during the BOGO at TRU i ended up returning some figures and came out with $$22.58 which lowers my yearly spending too...

Year so far= $600.91

and so i only have $180 to last me till july 26 in terms of "hobby" spending.

Almost a zero month for me until the last couple of days:

Vintage trilogo R2-D2 periscope $46 shipped
Vintage trilogo Obiwan Kenobi and trilogo squidhead $75.02 shipped
Jump trooper and evo trooper $21

Total for the month of April: $142.02
March total: $346.09
February total: $269.73
January total: $248.96

Total for the year so far: $1006.80

Sold off a couple of hundred bucks worth of stuff locally too, but not factoring that in again.  I'll probably spring for some Indy things in May, so I'm expecting that month to be more pricey too.

May:
Indiana Jones stuff: six basic figs, 4 deluxe sets: $80
Box Kubrick Series 8 $80
Indiana Jones GG artifact (Crystal Skull) $45

alright so i had yet another slow month with only 1 SW purchase which was a bummer.

Jan= $148.40
Feb= $158.91
March= $214.94
April= $148.98 -$11 from returns. total $137.98

Year total=$660.19

hmm not quite sure why my numbers are not adding up considering i bought GH3 and my year total only went up $60. but none the less if it is off it shouldnt be by much.

May might get a little expensive for me what with the new indy toys and the FU figures finally on cdn card. plus the new wave of comic packs finally hitting the shelves. But if I can stay on my budget i should be fine, and get more then what i need to fill my gaps.

Let's see - April totals...it doesn't seem like I bought much this month, but I guess much of it was closer to the beginning of the month.

Star Wars
Order 66 Packs (5 packs)=$50
TAC Force Unleashed Wave (5 figures)=$33.15

Other Stuff
Iron Man Movie Mark 3 Iron Man=$9.99

Total for April=$93.14

Total for 2008=$344.12

Big Indy hit today/this weekend should make May higher than it should be, but other than that it shouldn't be much SW stuff until July now.

and so May madness has begun.

Indy with RPG= $11.21
Indy with Skull= $11.21
German with bike= $14.60
Indy with horse= $14.60
Mutt with sword= $11.21
Juno= $10.15
damaged vader= $10.15
Kota= $10.15
4 order 66 packs = $38.28 (they were 15% off)
indy german 2 pk= $12.47 (15% 0ff)
German soldier= $10.15

Total for may so far= $164.34

well this month escalated pretty fast. still just a couple more indy figures and some of wv2 SW figures and im done until july. Although my sister is going to Buffalo on Monday so she will be able to save me a couple of bucks by getting the stuff down there.

Only 1 Maure for myself, but if you look at the over all list of what has been purchased very little of it has been Star Wars. Mostly Stargate figures (3 Waves of them)

Jan - $342.04

Feb - $204.30

Mar - $427.94
  The Medicom oversized Darth Vader was responsible for half of that.

Apr - $743.95
  Ouch. Over $450 of that was spent in 3 days in Edmonton at the Toy Show.  Damn it was fun though.

May - $330.24
  The month's not quite over, but I seem to be back to my "normal" pace of spending.  But I've got another $150 worth of stuff still to come in the mail.

I didn't keep the best track this month, but I'll give my best estimate.  As far as I can remember, I think it was pretty much all Indy this month:

Indiana Jones Basic Figures (16 at 6.99 each)=$112
Indiana Jones Deluxe Figures (6 at 9.99 each)=$60
Indiana Jones Adventure Heroes (9 at 5.99 each)=$54
Indiana Jones Vehicle (1 at 19.99 each)=$20

G.I. Joe Basic Figures (2 at 6.84)=$13.68

Dark Knight Movie Masters (2 at 9.99 each)=$20

Total for May=$279.68

Total for 2008=$623.80

By far my worst month I believe, and higher than I'd like to be for the year.  I don't think I'm looking for much aside from the Mygeeto BP and Shadow Stormtroopers until the big July 26th SW hoopla, unless more Indy or DCUC stuff shows up.
Title: Re: The Great 2008 Collector's Challenge

Jan= $148.40
Feb= $158.91
March= $214.94
April= $137.98
May= $164.34

Year total=$824.57

I think I spend way to much money in May, however all I need now is one more Indy figure (his dad) and I will probably be done with that line for the rest of the year. I think I SHOULD be good for figures until July 26, but that day will for sure beat most of my above listing which is going to hurt my little friend named wallet. All I need now is the Mygeeto pack(which will probably arrive in Canada sometime around christmas) and a SL gold coin figure.

June

Well after buying the BMF this months costs just went up!

BMF= $160
shocktrooper/evo trooper= $21.33
Basso comic pack= $16.94

Month so far= $198.27

I put the BMF as $160 for one major reason...thats all I paid. My dad said he would help me pay this thing off because since it came out so soon I did not have enough for it, also he said it was considered as my end of 'high school gift'....now to make sure I can get the grades I need to continue my life in university. Now mind you this months costs is only on my collecting items, my university enrollment deposit cost me $450 :o all I have to do now is cross my fingers work my butt off and get a sure seat in the Uni then I get to pay off the other $5000. And my parents have already said they wont help me with this pay lol.

note: to make things easier for myself instead of making a new post for every item I buy this month I will just edit it into this post.

Was finally able to pick up 2 of the TAC figures I needed at a local comic shop. While going to another I was able to find the all so rare (anywhere besides Japan that is) Gundam figures. I only bought the LaGOWE because it was A. Cheap and B. the only one from the Gundam Seed series. I wanted to buy the Destiny mobile suit but that one was $16.99. Its a great series but they are very hard to get and very expensive for the main characters mobile suits. I might pick up the Destiny the next time I go. Besides they have been at that shop for a year now. When I went last year they had 3 of these Gundam figures and since then I have picked up to of them. Only one left to go lol.

edit august22****picked up a ton of figures in Buffalo at a way cheaper price. heck I was surprised to find wave 3. only thing that sucks is now after I find the quad cannon clone it will be even longer till something new arrives up here :-\
next stop Fan Expo....it will be expensive for sure.

edit august 24*** Expo actually was not to expensive but it was a ton of fun.

Still no wave 2 up here in Canada. I'm guessing it will come in this month while all other waves will also be pushed back a month. So with my luck we will at least get wave 3 legacy by the end of the year and wave 2 clone wars :-\. Collection spending will be cut back a lot though as my first day of University is tomorrow and those monthly passes for the GO bus are going to cost me $150 a month :-X Now its time to buy only what I really need or in this case because toys are not a need..want :)

Oh yeah forgot to mention I was also able to get a SPC discount card.So basically all the figures I buy from now on will be from  Zellers or the Bay because I get 10% off. Pretty good considering I will be saving about $1.15 a figure and since there are only 20 figures left for me to get (in which I know I wont be finding half of them anyways) I can save up to $25. There are also a bunch of other deals all in which will help make university cheaper for me. The card cost $7 and it has already saved me $4.

Sept.
Returns
Guitar hero guitar =   -$39.54

purchases
Clone Heavy Gunner= 11.29
DragonBall Z season 6= $40 (i used the left over change for the bus but mainpoint is that its gone lol)

September should be cheap for me though. I already got the last Legacy figure I needed and I doubt clone wars wave 2 will be out anytime soon in Canada anyways. Only other thing I need for this month in terms of Hobby spending is DragonBall Z season 6 which comes out on Tuesday
I have also spent about $25 in food and bus tickets at university and $500 in books but Ill leave that out for now.

The extra guitar I bought for my guitar hero broke down so after talking with the stores head office I was able to get a full refund for it because he stated that all the ones they sold were having the same problems. So i got $39.54 back. I then used the money toward buying RB but once I got to my car to give it a further inspection I realized that there were no drum sticks, and the drums were really banged up. heck some of the pads were already falling off, not to mention the fact that it had all been just thrown into the box. So i went back and got my money back. They tried to refuse giving my money back but I reminded them that I bought it 5 minutes before hand and they stated they had to call head office for a refund, once I said I would wait they caved in lol. I still support the store but I will only buy dvds from them for now on, all the accessory type things I have bought from them have always been crap.

Had to fix up my May spending. due to the fact that I had to return my GH guitar. I screwed up somewhere I know so my over all spending is going to be off a bit by the end of the year but what ever I just want an idea of how much I spent all year, I dont care about being exact.

On the side note I am very happy that I was able to keep Sept spending down. although then again if I didnt buy wave 2 in the states in august I would have for sure broken the $100 point this month lol. All I need now is about 15 basic figures between clone wars and Legacy. I can see Wave two of clone wars hitting canada and wave 3 of Legacy but I dont think we will get the last wave for each set up here. And if we do it will be next spring and each store will only get 1 box each and then hasbro will say they were here so we should just shut up and give them more money.

O I know my numbers are alittle off but owell. The PS3 is really what sent my spending soarin but I dont regret it. NHL 09 is just way to fun. At least I have been able to hold back on my SW spending though only buying figures I really want now, no more sensless army building. The max of a figure I will buy now will be two and that is only if it is a cool/different enough figure.

-well after all the money I used this year I think its safe to say I need to seriously cut back. Im  making a limit of $20 a month on action figures and only if I dont already have the character..exception being Old Ben. I have more than enough figures and have no more need for much more. Though I am happy with what I do have.

I was able to keep November at my lowest all Year which is a major plus for me. Im going to be cutting back on SW collecting now, most likely just stick with basic figures, no comic pack has been able to interest me lately and battle packs are not worth $33 up here, and I have no room for vehicles. December should be down in costs too what with christmas coming up, though what ever I dont spend on myself will just be spent on other people lol. As long as I can keep from hitting $2500 I will be happy though all I plan on buying this month is maybe a PS3 game and that is only because I have a $20 giftcard for blockbusters that I got from trading in some old crappy PS2 games.

December=

I am done for the year, a litte lower this time around. Slowed down as I was saving $$$ for buying a house.  8)

OK, time for my tally:

2004 = $9858.00 US. Approx.
2005 = $6000.00 to $8000.00 US.
2006 = $7343.60 US.

End of the year tally... $12903.96 US.  (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/djustus/faint.gif) (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/djustus/faint.gif) (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/djustus/faint.gif) (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/djustus/faint.gif) (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/djustus/faint.gif)

Sure can't wait till the new year.  :-X

Well, I went on a silly December vintage tear and obviously didn't manage to stay under the $3K mark :-\  I'm disappointed I spent this much this year but at the same time, there was a solid chunk of high end stuff in there and a lot of it vintage in nature.  $3494.81 is the total for the year and a fair bit higher than I wanted.  I'm going to aim for $2K for 2009 I think and I'll be clearing out a bunch of modern stuff to help offset that amount as well.

October Total: $370.73
November Total: $445.42
December Total: $200.72

Yearly Total: $2744.70

And for comparisons sake:

- 2004: Lost track but who cares I was 15 and probably only spent $300 on video games and DVDs
- 2005: $1423.93
- 2006: Lost Track  ::) (roughly $1200)
- 2007: Lost Track  ::) (roughly $1000)

So yeah, this has definitely been my biggest year to date, mainly due to my ever expanding DVD collection. July was BRUTAL because not only all the SW crap I bought on 7/26 but Best Buy and Target seemed to have different DVD sets on sale every week. Yeah, you're buying TV show seasons for under $20 but it adds up when you buy 4 at a time. Thank goodness I bought them on sale, I can't imagine what I would have paid had I bought every set at full price. :-X

Honestly I don't know how I could afford all this stuff in addition to paying for groceries, gas and the like during the semester and a few major car repairs over the summer. Thank goodness for high paying summer jobs I guess. :)

I finally had the balls to total up my year, and unfortunately my overall spending is up this year - $4923.98.  That was after selling a small number of extras ($566 worth), but at least it was able to keep me under $5000.

2007 - $2682.12.  (spending $5067.63, but sold $2385.52; numbers don't exactly add up because of eBay fees, etc)
2006 - $7960.96
