Title: TRU "Hoth Patrol" Battle Pack
Post by: Jeff on January 18, 2008, 12:18 AM
It first showed up at Celebration IV.  Then, at SDCC'07 we found out it was coming in 2008 as an exclusive.

Now, we know "who" picked it up - Toys R Us.  No idea on the "when" just yet, but if it's this far along, it must be sooner rather than later...  ;)

Box full of repacks?  An easy "pass" for me...  ;)

Well I'm sure kids may wanna get it but I'm sure most collectors have these figures already.

A VERY uninspired pack.

I suppose if new collectors and kids missed this....

I just don't see kids being into the OT though like they are the PT. So this will be a pegwarming set like the Bantha is in my area.

New Hasbro NEW!!!!

Damn... Toys R Us exclusive? That sucks for me... the closest TRU is about 30-40 minutes from my house. Would anyone here be interested in purchasing one of these sets for me, as well as 4 STAP Attack sets? (assuming those are TRU exclusives as well) If you're interested in helping out a fellow collector and making some extra cash for yourself, please PM me and we can work out payment info when these sets come out.

This is one i can say without a doubt is a big pass. I already have 3 tauntuans and i believe 2 wampas. No need for any more since there is nothing new in that set.

Definite pass.  The thing I find most interesting is that they call this the 'Hoth Patrol' BP yet the Wampa already has a part of the Tauntan in his hand...  They could have made this the 'Hoth Patrol/Wampa's Cave' BP, and then added the two pieces of 'ice' that allow you to hang Luke upside down.

Really helps me to decide to stop collecting the packaging with '07.

I have all of this stuff already too, so a pass from me as well.  I can see that it would be a nice pack for new collectors or kids though, and I'm half tempted just because I want another Taun Taun - but I don't want to pay the likely $25 at TRU just for that.  It makes me wish there wish a mid-size/deluxe line to get these smaller beasts (or mini rigs!) like there used to be :).  It really seems like the beasts (OT in particular) have really been on the backburner lately.  That might be changing this year with this and the Rancor rumors we keep hearing (and the Bantha packs last year too I guess - maybe they haven't been shafted that much :P).

Another pass here too... but I acknowledge that this, as all battle packs, is an excellent way to get a whole scene of past toys out to new collectors/kids.  I wonder if this Tauntaun is truly Luke's with the shorter horn, or Han's with both intact.

I'll keep an eye out for you on them, I am going to pass on this one myself cause I have everything this one is offering, the Stap set is another story great army builder there.

This is an easy pass for someone like me who's been collecting since the beginning of the modern run, but a nice set for newer collectors and the kids.

Wasn't there going to be a Hoth Han originally included with this? I couldn't load the JD coverage from the comic-con, but I was pretty sure they showed a Han in the set as well.

As has been said, I'm passing on this set as well.  However, I'm glad to see them use that Wampa, it's one of my favourite creatures in the modern line.

This just looks like a lousy toy...can Luke even sit on that tauntaun?  I don't think his knees have any articulation.

Yet another set that I don't want/need as a carded/boxed collector.  I'm getting so close to the point of breaking.   :-\

They should have really axed this set. Only thing worth anything is the Wampa and that is not saying much. It saves me money, so I can't complant too much ;D.

They really should have included the ice base that this Luke originally came with an the base and post that the Wampa originally came with. What could the cost of those pieces have been? $1? $2?

I know TRU will charge their regular $24.99 for this Battlepack, so it's completely inexcuseable that the base pieces aren't included.

To me a "Hoth Patrol" Battle pack is two Tauntauns and Hoth Han and Hoth Luke that can both SIT on the Tauntauns. Han's should have a split belly to recreate the rescue scene.

Then a second Battle Pack could be the "Wampa's Cave" - but the problem there, is that it would be nothing more than the Wampa and Luke from the Saga line in one box. Maybe include a ghost Obi-Wan Kenobi with it? But it's still pretty weak.

So it's obvious that they wanted a vehicle they could use to get the Wampa back out into circulation since the last time it was around was 2002/2003.

I already stopped with all of the packaging variants myself - for TAC, I refused to drop $80 just to get the TAC versions of Darth Vader's TIE, Anakin's ROTS Jedi Starfighter, Obi-Wan's ROTS Jedi Starfighter and Mace Windu's ROTS Jedi Starfighter.

I'm currently fighting the urge to pick up the three repackaged Evolutions sets.

I did purchase all of the TAC Battlepacks so far. It definitely is getting harder and harder to justify grabbing a second (or in some cases possibly a third) versions of the exact same item w/no paint op variations just to have a "complete" packaging collection.

It's not that hard.  The only thing that's been bugging me is the Betrayl at Bespin BP.  I really want that for some reason, but it has been getting easier for me to pass on newly repackaged stuff like the "new" Evolution sets.  My old ones are just fine.

Nope, that Luke doesn't have articualted knees.  They need to make a new version of him...

When you think about it, it's TRU, not that big of a loss of shelf space.  ;)

Shouldn't maybe there be five figures in the battle pack.  Because all there is in the battle pack is really just Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear (most likely a repack of the Luke Skywalker figure from the SAGA 2004 collection), A tauntaun, and a wampa.

Not necessarily.  The Wampa and Tauntaun are each roughly equivalent in size to 2 figures, so 2x2+1=5.  Actually, in a way, you could say there are 5 figures.  ;)

$20 isn't ridiculous for two beasts and a figure.  Figure that a lot of people are paying the same amount for two figures with speederbikes.  On the flip side, there's apparently nothing new here, so not exactly what I would call a deal either.  Still planning to pass on this one.  :P

Doesn't TRU charge $30 if it's exclusive, $25 if it's not?

Yeah, I've seen dozens so far... just collecting dust!  I wonder why they thought this would be a good set... if the Taun Taun had a removable harness, then it would have been cool.  As is, easy pass.

I wonder why they thought this would be a good set...

The set makes a lot more sense in it's original context...  when it was originally shown at C-IV, it was supposed to be in stores for the holiday shopping season (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/files/gallery/Conventions/Celebration_IV/Hasbro/Friday_Presentation/DSC02902.JPG) (Oct/Nov 2007).  And it was originally supposed to be in the main, non-exclusive BP assortment.

Putting this Hoth set out for $20 at the Holidays made perfect sense as it would have been a great gift idea for a kid who may not have these beasts yet.  $20 for the two beasts and Luke isn't a bad deal for a gift.  While many collectors already have them, many kids don't since it's been a while since they were available (3-4 years).

Putting it out as an exclusive for $25 well after the holiday shopping is over though sort of torpedoes all the above reasons why it's a great idea though...  :P

I forgot this was originally slated for a $20 set around Christmas... I could see it doing ok then, but this time of year at $25 = dust collector.

I'll be curious to see how it does-- honestly, if it hangs around as the kids go into full SW-mode, it might do really well.  As a youngster, the first things I asked for by name (and the very first thing I *got*) were Hoth figures.  After the Wampa, it all sorta snowballed-- the Tauntaun is a retooled one (no running/no split belly), but Luke and the Wampa are kinda unremarkable.  To kids, they might be good, but as others have pointed out it's a real shame that Luke can't sit on his ride.  As that somewhat defeats the point of bundling them together.

I need to finish editing it, but:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26599914@N04/sets/72157605295954703/
(Can I say I love this Flickr thing?  Well, I do.)   I put this one down as another "just different enough to make you mad," which is a shame as I thought the STAP Attack set was totally worth the $25.  (Love the figures.  I'd have been fine with just one STAP, but hey, I dig anything with a Droid Army logo on it.)

That Geonosis Arena set seems to have done well despite being a redeco box with minimal new tooling.  I see a few sitting here and there, but this was after it seems to have vanished once or twice, so I *guess* TRU can really move a big box with a lot of critters in it.

I picked up a pair of these (one to open and one to keep MIB).

I mostly grabbed it 'cause I only picked up one of the Ultra Edition Wampas from the Saga1 line and if I ever wanted to display separately a Wampa running through my Echo base figures, this was as good a chance as any to score that figure.

Same thing with the Tauntaun, I'm hoping to just customize a Hoth Rebel Soldier to put in the saddle.

The Luke is a throw-away figure here. I wish they had put in the display base pieces from the original figure relase and ultra Wampa, just so I could have a second display of the Luke hanging upside down, but oh well.

The STAP Attack set is by far a better exclusive set when compared to this one, but that's in my opinion. I just got a $10 off $50 at TRU that expires June 30th and I'm currently leaning towards grabbing two more STAP Attacks just 'cause I bring the cost per set down to the regular Target/WalMart battle pack price.

I agree the STAP BP is cool, the Hoth..uhhh..its just "ok" I'm just not really into the regular BP anymore, Ill save my $$$ and buy the UBP.  I think they when the BP came out there cool something new..now I just pass them buy..part of my overall plan to cut back on SW collecting.

I've been very surprised to see that these are selling better than the STAP Attack Battle Packs.  One would have thought that collectors would've gotten their fill of tauntaun's, Hoth Luke and the Wampa.  But perhaps it isn't the collector base that's buying this battle pack.  I'm skipping it simply because it's redundant.  I have everything in the set already.

I agree with Pete_Fett, the ice bases from saga hoth luke and ultra wampa were necesary in this pack.

It happens every time when Hasbro repacks..... they diminish accesories. The decorated box inside serves as a diorama, but if they want to satisfy collectors' need for accuracy they must have included the ice bases of Luke and Wampa.

Funny that I made this comment about the TRU Hoth Patrol battlepack and now own one of these.   ::)  I'm looking for a definiteive guide on what's new about these vs. the original releases.  Anyone know of a good resource?  Rebelscum and Yakface didn't have anything.  AP's report seems to indicate the wampa is just a repaint.  Not sure if the Taun Taun matches the one from the Battle of Hoth Battle Pack and Luke seems like some kind of kit-bash.

Luke's a straight repaint of the Saga Luke that had bloody deco...  He's just clean in this pack IIRC.  The Taun-Taun is a (slight?) repaint of the POTF2 Taun-Tauns...  The Battle of Hoth pack you mention I believe has the split belly Taun-Taun in it, I think, which is a completely different beast though based on the POTF2 one's in terms of sculpt...  It's all new though if I'm not mistaken, to accomodate the split-open belly.

This must have been some sort of warehouse find has I read and heard reports of these showing up around the Midwest. Too bad they didn't show up a couple months ago at this price as I bought the Hoth set of eBay for full retail and then some.  :P

yar - I live in Mishawaka, Indiana and I grabbed this set and the STAP Attack BP on clearance the week it was BOGO 1/2 off - so I got a pretty damn sweet deal with 2 BP's just over $20.
