'Toy Story' gets 3-D makeover
Disney to re-release Pixar franchise
By MARC GRASER
Disney is giving Pixar’s 'Toy Story' franchise the 3-D treatment.

The Mouse House is giving Pixar's "Toy Story" franchise the 3-D treatment.
As part of an aggressive move by the studio to turn more of its toons into 3-D releases, company will convert "Toy Story" into the format and re-release the pic in theaters on Oct. 2, 2009. Its sequel will get the same makeover and bow Feb. 12, 2010.

The re-releases lead up to the opening of the newest adventure for Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their toy pals: "Toy Story 3" is slated for June 18, 2010. It will also be shown in 3-D; Lee Unkrich (co-director of "Toy Story 2") is helming.

Studio said John Lasseter, who directed the first two "Toy Story" pics and serves as chief creative officer for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, will oversee the creative side of the 3-D conversions for "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2."

The Mouse has become the latest studio to push the 3-D format, especially with its animated fare, as a way to lure more auds into theaters.

And for good reason. Studio's seen strong numbers from its releases that have received the 3-D treatment, such as Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Chicken Little" and "Meet the Robinsons." Of the $97.8 million domestic haul for "Robinsons," for example, $30.4 million came from 3-D runs.

Disney's upcoming "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," toon "Bolt," the performance-capture adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," the stop-motion pic "Frankenweenie" and live-action/performance capture combo "Alice in Wonderland" will also be distribbed in 3-D.

The studios have set their sights on 2009 as the year for auds to embrace 3-D; by then, thousands of theater screens will be capable of showing off the technology.

Across town, DreamWorks will bow "Monsters vs. Aliens" and "How to Train Your Dragon" that year in Imax 3-D and on regular screens in digital 3-D, with "Shrek Goes Fourth" to follow in 2010.

All of DreamWorks' toons will be produced for the format in the future, Jeffrey Katzenberg has said.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox will release James Cameron's "Avatar" in 3-D next year.

"Beowulf" has been the widest 3-D release to date, with 3-D playdates on hundreds of Imax and regular screens having outgrossed traditional runs throughout several weeks of its release.

Both of my sons are going to freak when I tell them that there's going to be another Buzz and Woody movie coming out.  And they are going to love the fact that they can go to the movie theatre to see the other 2 when they are re-released!

Hmm... not sure about the third one. Back in 05/06 I heard that the storyline was going to be centered around a Buzz Lightyear recall and the rest of the toys just happening to tag along to Taiwan. Interesting, but I'm not sure how they'd make a full movie about it. I'm sure I'll see it though, since I saw both of the other movies in theaters.

Hard to believe it's been 13 years since the original... I feel old.

i'm a little more interested in the mentioned revisions of Frankenweenie (Tim Burton's first feature length) and the live/capture Alice in Wonderland movies, myself. i kinda wish 2D would make a comeback at this point, but oh well.

I am sure Lucas can't wait to bust out his 3-D Star Wars now.  Anyway, nice news about Toy Story 3.  I kind of hope they make another Cars to.

I say they make up something about Slinky losing his talking parts. I agree with you guys, he wouldn't be the same with a new voice.

He'll just grunt when Woody asks him if he's coming along for the adventure. Then when the others ask where's Slinky, Woody will say he stayed behind to guard the house and the rest of the toys left behind.

Problem solved.

But then how would Mattel sell all their old, leftover Slinky Dog toys in the new Toy Story 3 boxes?

Maybe he'll come down with a particularly bad case of laryngitis.  Or maybe he'll appear in a "Slinky Dog gets his tonsils taken out" sequence.

By painting little goatees on them and selling them as "Evil Slinky Dog", Slinky Dog's evil identical twin brother... the one responsible for Slinky Dog's death!

Does that mean that the family in Toy Story 3 will reside in an apartment building -- thus allowing Slinky Dog's evil twin to push him down an elevator shaft?

So which are digital and which are hand drawn?

Wall*E - digital
Tinkerbell - digital
Bolt - digital
Up - digital
Toy Story 3 - digital
The Princess and the Frog - hand drawn
Rapunzel - hand drawn ?
NEWT - digital
The Bear and the Bow - hand drawn?
Cars 2 - digital
The King of the Elves - hand drawn?

Personally, I want to see The King of the Elvises.

I think Princess and the Frog is the only hand drawn one, but if that's successful then we might see Disney pump out some more. They're really hesitant about traditional animation since their last couple of movies using that style bombed. (somehow I doubt that the animation had anything to do with that)

Also, conspiratists look no further than this chart for more fuel of the "world ending in 2012" rumors. ;)

I saw an article today on Yahoo! that the 3-D release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be a double feature and will only play for 2 weeks starting October 2.  They also show a new trailer in the article.

Yahoo! article (http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/take5.html)

However, this cotradicts the earlier report that Toy Story 2 will be coming out February 12, 2010.

We took our daughter this afternoon as well, and just as others have said, we all loved it.  Every bit as good as the first two I thought, and an excellent end to the "trilogy".  We were talking about it afterwards, and it really is a pretty much perfect trilogy of movies.  All three are so well done.  I'd like to see it again as well.

Saw TS3 last night, and surprise surprise, another home run by Pixar. I'm gonna go all out and say we have our early candidate for movie of the year, hell, even DECADE. There were parts that made me laugh, there were parts that had me on the edge of my seat, and then there were parts that made me want to start bawling. Seriously, if you don't make it through the ending without at least tearing up you have no soul. Also the Pixar short at the beginning was amazing as well.

FWIW, I was surprised at the lack of kids in my theater... mostly full grown adults which really says something about Pixar's appeal!

Rat was the only real steaming pile of crap that Pixar has made IMO.  All their other movies=great.  They usually will get me to the point of tearing up.  The only one that didn't was The Incredibles.  I'll have to take my sons to see this movie.  Both love Pixar's movies.

See, I really like Ratatouille, I thought it was really well done and I watched it again last week and thought it the same thing.

My least favorite for sure is Bug's Life.  It isn't even in the same league as the others.

Same here, I liked Ratatouille as well.  I've pretty much liked everything Pixar has done so far, but Bug's Life is probably my least favorite as well.  In fact, it is the only one we don't currently own I think.  Not that it is a bad movie, I guess I just never got too jazzed about it.  I actually haven't seen it in a long time now though, so I should probably give it another watch.  Although I like them all, I think my "top 5" of the Pixar movies would be the three Toy Story movies, as well as the Incredibles and Up.  Wall-E, Monsters Inc., and Finding Nemo all get a lot of play with the family as well though.  Cars isn't too bad either (with a 2nd on the way next year).

Caught it today with my kids.  GREAT finale to the series.  I'm really glad that they decided to make the third installment and end it on such a happy note.

PIXAR seems to outdo themselves with every movie they put out.  This puts a lot of pressure on Cars 2 IMO...

Watched it in 3D today.  Other than the increase in ticket prices, I'm not sure why they put these out in 3D.  I don't think it helped my enjoyment any more than a 2D verison would have and there aren't really any 3D gags that I remembered. However, the kids wanted to see the 3D version so we did.  Having said that, I absolutely loved the movie.  It was a great ending to the trilogy.

Saw that news last night, and needless to say our daughter was pretty psyched.  Although the "original" trilogy of Toy Story was pretty much perfect, I can't say I mind that they would make another.  As I saw someone else mention online, the first trilogy was for the "Andys" out there, who are now grown up, and it is perfectly find for there to be new Toy Story movies for the "Bonnies" too.

That said, me, my wife, and our daughter are huge fans of the movies so we are looking forward to see what the next movie holds.  I can't see it being bad considering how great the first three were.  I never felt there was any real drop off in quality among them.

I can certainly see why you were not a fan and don't begrudge you at all.

I went with my wife and daughter to see this today and I really enjoyed it.  The surprise, non-surprise at the end was a cool gut punch and it will be interesting if they decide to make a 5th installment.  Overall though, I thought it was a solid addition to the franchise.  To me, another well done Disney animated film.
