Title: Repro weapons. Any good???
Post by: Lemon-Viper on June 19, 2003, 06:19 PM
I've recently seen some reproduction weapons for vintage figures on ebay.  How close are these to the original weapons?  Did they make them in the same color as the originals or where they odd colors like the GI Joe reproduction weapons were?  Where else can you get them besides ebay?

Thanks for your help,

Lemon-Viper

I personally don't like them.  The ones that I've seen look fairly close, but they are made of the same plastic that model kits are.

I don't have any repro weapons in my collection, mainly because they're made of cheaper plastic than the originals.  They're pretty good for the price, but they're just they're definitely not the true-blue vintage ones.

One of the few things I ever bought from Brian's Toys was a pack of repro weapons & accessories.  It was too dreadfully expensive.  I needed them mainly for my loose ewoks.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I would like to stick to original weapons too.  Is there a good site to find the originals off, or should I just keep putting up want adds to eventually complete my figs?

Well, you could always try eBay of course, but it's sometimes hard to tell what is vintage and what is repro.  You could always try a local toy show or flea market to find those.

You could take a look for some on ebay. As for online stores, you can try The Earth Collecibles (http://www.theearthtoymall.com/) They have original weapons. Vintage Star Wars accessories (http://www.theearthtoymall.com/star-wars-action-figures-accessories.html)
There is also Brian's Toys (http://www.brianstoys.com/acatalog/catalogbody.html) They also have original weapons & accessories. Weapons & Accessories (http://www.brianstoys.com/acatalog/Collectible_Toys_Original_Weapons_for_3_3_4__Figures_136.html)

Hope this helps.  :)

Thanks for the links GSJ!!!  They are gonna be truely helpful.  Especially The Earth Collectibles.  I was looking for a good source of figure stands too, and that looks to be the place!

The only weapon I'd have to compare the original and the repro ones is Bossk's gun.  Does anyone have a repro version they'd trade or sell me fairly cheep so I can compare the pieces for myself.  I'd like to get an idea if they'd be ok for my personal collection.

Thanks,

I agree with most folks, if I am going to take the time to track down vintage figures, I want to give them there vintage counterparts.

Just the thought of having all vintage is more appealing to me.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll add to this one.

Can anyone tell me if their blue Han Solo blaster is "see through"

I just got one with the Hoth Han I purchased, and when I hold it up to the light it is kinda see through around the edges.

Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Scott

The Han Solo Blaster.

I checked mine & there is a very faint area around the blaster that is thin. The plastic is injected into a 2 piece mould. The plastic escapes between the moulds causing a very small flange around the part that is being moulded. Something like plastic model kits were the parts on the plastic Sprue (trees) have eccess plastic on the edges of the parts. Like this:

A good example is the Chewbacca Bowcaster. The scan of mine is very large so you can see the flange on the stock on the right side. When I held it up to the light. I can really see the thin areas around it. I could even see that the bottom of the Bowcaster was very thin & showed up in a very light blue compared to the rest of the weapon. This did not show up in the scan but if you have a Bowcaster, have a look.

Like I mentioned, the area is very small. Sorry for the big picture but I think thats the only way you can see it.    :)

Thanks...

Mine looks similar to yours except for the left side.. (barrel pointing left.)

On your pic there is a bump sticking out, on mine it is an indentation.

Also when I say the gun is see through, it is almost the whole thing...  The entire barrel is affected, as well as about half the body.

Repro????

I'll try... my camers sucks at taking close ups though.

I might be able to borrow a friend's camera.

Stay tuned......   ;)
