Title: Glass Display Cases?
Post by: speedermike on March 29, 2008, 01:12 PM

In the next few months I'm going to buy a simple glass display case (or two) for my collection.  This one from Ikea looks pretty good.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

I know a lot of people use the Detolf (also Ikea) for their Gentle Giant stuff - inexpensive and you can line a few of them up...

I think they cost $60 each and come with lighting (don't quote me on that) and come in a few different shades.

Sorry....I couldn't resist.  :D

I remember a while ago that someone posted a shelving unit with glass doors and shelves that mounted on the wall.  It' was really cool.  I think it was from Ikea, but I'm not 100% sure.

If you really have a lot of stuff to display may I suggest making a case yourself

I would love to make something myself, but time, lack of skill, and the probability of moving to a larger house in the next two years all suggest that it's not a great idea.  I've seen that room, and it really is great!

I'm a big fan of the Detolfs.  Affordable and they look great.  I have 4 - the first two were bought before IKEA introduced the black color for them, so I just painted them that color.  The other 2 were bought in the stock black color.  Two of them house my 12" Sideshow stuff (except for Jabba and the like, which sit next to them on a coffee table), one houses my Kubricks and the other is for my animated maquettes.  They're filling up quick though, so I might need to grab some more.

This it?  I have one of these for my loose collection consisting of three shelves of vintage, one shelf of the VOTC/V30th figures, one shelf for my astro droids, one shelf for the McQuarrie figures and two each for GIJOE and Cobra.  There's room next to it for another one once that gets filled (and like the Detolfs, it's getting there quickly).

Mikey,
About how many figures do those wall shelving units hold?  Virtually all of my stuff is loose and I think those look really sharp and would be a good fit for the vintage and modern SW stuff plus the Kubricks as well.

Also can you ballpark how many maquettes a Detolf will hold?  I'm thinking about doing Detolfs for the maquettes and mini-busts but I'm not sure if they're an efficient use of space.  Perfect for the maquettes but not so much for mini-busts unless you can add shelves?

Brent, the 22 or so Vintage modern figures all fit on one shelf so there's plenty of room on each shelf.

I have 2-3 maquettes on each shelf in the Detolfs with room to spare.  I also elevate some of them to make a better fit.

I've always liked the look of those cases as well, when I've seen them in various collections here at JD.  Do you happen to have pics of your collection in the Mikey?  Just curious.  I wouldn't mind picking up a couple of these too, if they were affordable - since pretty much all of my stuff is loose as well.

Thanks Mikey,
Those might be ideal and that 24" on center wall stuff might just end up being brilliant, because I might be able to sink a few of those into the wall.  On one end, we built a false wall about a foot (ok, 10") from the outer wall because the sump pump outlet pipe goes up that wall.  So I easily have room in back and could probably reinforce it pretty easily to put those in.  Is the wiring plug in type or can I direct wire it into stuff?  I have the switched outlets in my room for the plugs for the Sideshow Obi/Vader, I could easily tie those into the same switch and have all the lights for display go on at the same time.  Hmmm.

Brian,
Those are Bertby shelves if you're hunting through the Ikea web page.  Retailing at $99 ($159 in Canada  :o >:() each.  The Detolf's are only $59.99 ($69.99 in CAD  ::)).

Anyone know where to get plexiglass/lexan/clear plastic risers?

They don't get recessed into the wall, Brent.  They're surface mounted.  I'm sure you could attempt it, but I'm not sure how the hinges and door would then work without some modifications.  And now you're talking more of a hassle than it's worth in my opinion.

Is the wiring plug in type or can I direct wire it into stuff?

I honestly don't know, none of my cabinets have lights and I've never considered lights.  When I bought my cabinets I didn't look at that option.

No pics yet, Brian.  I'm such a procrastinator when it comes to **** like that.

 :-\

Better to know in advance.  They looked like they could be flush mounted, but I can see your point, you'd have to alter the hinge so the frame could come out first, then swing open.  Definitely way more hassle than I'm capable of.  Still look pretty sweet for figs though.  About 180 figs per cabinet though?

More or less.  My figs are packed in there and the new vintage figures and the astro droids are the most crowded, but each group does fit on one shelf.  I'll have to take a pic and post it soon so everyone can get an idea on what it looks like filled.

I can vouch for the Detolf's that Rob mentioned.  But I think I paid something like $80 at the store for them and I bought two.  There are a few pics of my collection if you go to the vintage section and take a look at my Han focus. I don't have a group shot of all of the collection in both sets of shelves.

That was the price I was thinking ($80) for Detolfs Chris, but when I checked online yesterday at Ikea.com, $59.99 came up.  Maybe it's a sale?

Wow, I wish I had waited another year to buy mine.  Might have to spring for a third case just for the hell of it.  I'm going to overflow mine pretty soon anyway.

Good lord at just 180 figures per case, I'd have to get at a minimum 17 cases. That's over $1K for cases alone at the $60 cheaper price. I think I'll just wait and build a custom case, some being the large enclosed dioramas that I've been planning for, for sometime now.

I wouldn't use the Detolfs for action figures as it only has 4 shelves and isn't expandable as far as being able to add more shelves. It leaves a ton of dead space above the figures. I'd use the Detolfs for tall items like 12" figures.

I bought two Detolfs and used them to make a custom case.  I used all three sides of one and the doors of both as five glass display shelves.  That allowed me to make a pretty sweet 6' x 6' display shelf AND left me with a spare Detolf ( minus the door ) to display some bigger figs and Marvel Legends.
