Title: The Apple iPhone Thread

Tried to get one this morning and the line was too darn long.  Anyone do the same?

I finally was able to place an order for a 16G one.  It should be here next week.

So excited.

I think all Apple products suck and always have, not to mention their nauseating advertisements.

I switched over to AT&T a few months back in anticipation of this.  I'm buying, but probably not for a few more months.

I have an iPod and a Cell phone.  No real need to combine the two since I really only need my iPod to play music and my cell phone for text messages and making calls.

Neat little gadgets though...if they were available on Verizon I might consider it down the road...I'm currently happy with my enV.

I don't even really plan on using the iPhone for my music, I want it for the Internet capabilities.  They're super handy when you need to look something or some location up when you're out and about.

Thanks for the thread crap.  I know that there are lots of people who thin Apple products are overrated.  My experience has not not borne that out.  I bought an iMac over 6 years ago and it still works well for what I want and need.  In the same time, I have been through three Dells for work, with them never functioning as well as my iMac.

So, I was hoping this thread could be for JD members who have an iPhone, want an iPhone or are interested in it.  If I wanted to debate Apple vs. ???, I would have created that thread instead.

Criticism is fine but that usually means that there is a specific point that is being made.  I just didn't see the point in dumping in a thread with a grand pronouncement that all Apple products suck.  In a community like this, people start conversations and they evolve.  Everyone's got an opinion and free to share them, obviously.

Again, I was interested if any JDers were getting the iPhone and sharing in that.  But I'll be careful of whom I criticize in the future.

That's just the point, you don't have to be careful of who or what you criticize here.

I think Apple products are oversensationalized. They always claim how much better they work but many times it is because those same people don't know how to use a Windows PC properly. I will say that their laptop hardware is often more sturdy than that of say, a Dell. But past graphic design work, they really have no place but to be trendy. There are many other solutions to the new iPhone that provide internet, calendaring, etc at a lower cost. Keep in mind too, I'm not a Microsoft fanboy. I'm thoroughly disgusted with Vista and a lot of the absolute **** Microsoft is pumping out these days.

I was able to score one last Thursday and absolutely love it.  While I have never played with the Instinct or Voyager, I am amazed at how easy this thing is to use and how much I use it.  The MLB at Bat program available for it is a baseball lovers dream.

I was visiting with family over the weekend and my cousin had the new iPhone so I spent a lot of time playing with it.  There are a lot of really fun apps out there.  The MLB one is really cool.  He also had one that let you record 10-15 seconds of a song (through the radio or by singing it) and the iPhone would ID the song and artist and let you tag it for future downloading from iTunes.  Very cool.

I've got an iPod touch but I haven't updated my software to the new version yet.  Without the wireless internet (3G style) and the Mic portion of the phone a lot of the apps aren't as useful or as much fun anyway.

Ok, need help from the folks who are more "tech" than myself (so anyone on the site)...

My Firm is going to switch to AT&T and my wife would like to trade her Blackberry for an iPhone, that's fine... but having never had any interest in one, I figured I would get another  BB... anybody have a reason one way or another why I would switch or not?

And is it worth it to get the biggest (32GB) one?
Title: Re: The Apple iPhone Thread

I can't speak to the merits of Blackberry vs. iPhone (but I love the iPhone), but unless you plan on keeping music or video on your phone, I say don't bother with the ones with the larger capacity.  Mine's the 8 GB and I've had it for a year and a half and there's tons of room on it still.

I have a blackberry and my wife has an iPhone.  I'd trade my BB in for an iPhone in a second if my company supported it.  I find the blackberry very clunky and although there are apps out there for it, its nothing like the support you can get for the iPhone.  Everytime I pick up my wife's iPhone I just love the way it looks and works.

Depending on how much email or texting you do, you may not like the touchscreen keyboard on the iPhone - it does seem to take some getting used too.

All I can say is I love my iPhone.  I've had it for about 8 months now.  I didn't want to get it initially because of the cost, but when they started dropping the price to $100  (3G version) with a contract renewal, I was all over it.  I didn't think I'd want to use all the stuff on it, but I use most of them, plus I've downloaded a ton of cool apps that keep me occupied when I get bored.  I like the text keyboard feature as I text a lot and have gotten pretty quick at it, compared to using the old school number system that was on my Sync.

My school district uses primarily Apple computers and so I'm pretty familiar with most of it and think Apple is better than PCs are.  We've gone through 4 PC/laptops in 7 years my wife and I have been married.  We've used two Apple laptops, one was a school district issued one, and the other was a personal one.  We are massive Apple fans...and we are very, very far from tech savvy.

Blackberry is better for business and work (E-mail, Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, etc). I believe the iPhone is better suited for personal use and leisure activities (such as apps) and music, etc.

This is pretty true according to people who I know that use the BB...but I can't comment on that part from personal experience.  The calendar for iPhone sucks, and you have to scroll through a bunch of stuff when using the contacts list.  I don't email from my phone much, because it's just kind of hard to do with a small screen and the keyboard feature.

Two things...just a few short months after getting my first iPod, I just renewed my cellular plan and upgraded to an iPhone 3GS.  So far i like it....have some nits to pick, but mostly very pleased.  As far as calendaring, email, and contacts I don't see any major functionality lost from my old Blackberry, although the lack of a "mark all read" option in email is stupid, but I'm synced over the air to my exchange server at work so my read/unread info stays in better sync than it ever did with my Blackberry.  Otherwise there's some quirks, but it sure is fun to use.

Other reason for the post....iPhone 4 leaked. (http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone)

Sorry to bump such an old thread. I figured it was better than creating a new one.

Anyone here have the iPhone 4s? This is only my second iPhone and I had a question.

I backed up my iPhone 4 to iTunes. I purchased the new iPhone 4S and synched it to my last backup. Did I just essentially just turn my 4S into a 4? I noticed the overall layout and look of the 4S was slightly different than my 4. It had more default apps and things of that nature. After I synched to my last back up, my 4S looks exactly like my 4 did.

You can manage all of your apps on an iPhone, iPad or iPod in iTunes.  It's simply a matter of formatting how you want your apps laid out in iTunes while you're syncing the device.

What probably happened here is that you had the layout for your iPhone 4 in iTunes, and that app layout has carried over to your new phone since both devices probably have the same name.  However, the iPhone 4S has hardware & software configs that will make it different from your iPhone 4.

Apple has shown off the new iPhone 5! It's longer with a new 4" screen and faster A6 processor. iOS 6 will also come out September 21st. Also the iPods get updated. The iPod Touch is thinner with a 4" screen, The shuffle gets new colors and the Nano gets a bigger display and thinner.

I'm a little surprised with the all the revamps to the nano that they didn't bump up the storage space.  A 32 GB nano has been rumored for quite a while, but they just have 16 GB models according to the Apple store.  I still only have an 8 GB model and didn't want to upgrade to 16 GB because I would have it filled immediately.  I think I'm going to finally jump on board with the iPhone, so I will probably just get the 64 GB model and use that as my mp3 player.

I'm all over this phone...

I'm a little annoyed by the articles this morning with people complaining about the new connector.  It'd be one thing if they just switched it to switch it, but it's going to be much faster and is reversible - which really should be the standard by now.

Why can't the new connector be just a standard mini usb port just like every other phone? Another Apple money grab.

I'm not surprised...they have had the proprietary connector since the beginning.  At least they are making adapters.  I remember have to buy a wall plug for ~$30 when I got my first iPod because you could only charge from a computer otherwise.

It will be far faster than mini-USB, and will plug in even if you're holding it upside down.  AKA, performance-wise, it is a major improvement.

Does anyone find it odd that there are no car chargers available as of yet?  I can understand that Apple kept the charging port under wraps, but even the Apple store doesn't have a car charger available yet.  Everything is just a USB adapter, but like everyone else, I don't want to have to either buy a second cord or carry the cord that comes with phone everywhere.

You don't need to by a separate cord just get the adaptor (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=48) and leave it attached to your existing charger in your car.

I think it's pretty regular for accessories to lag behind by a few days or weeks with new iPhone releases.  I remember the last time around having a hard time finding screen covers and case options until a week or three later.

The problem is that this is my first iPhone, so I have your standard cell phone charger.  I have a cord for my ipod, but that would require an adapter plus the car charger with USB outlet.  I also have radio adapter for the iPod, but it doesn't charge my wife's 4s, so I don't think that is a viable option either.

The car charger seems to be the only item not available at this point.  I have seen cases, screen protectors, the adapter for the old charge cord, but not any car charger.  I don't think I've seen spare cords either, but I haven't really looked too hard for them.  I doubt I can be the only one getting an iPhone for the first time, so I would think at least Apple would have the car charger out to make a few extra dollars.

Hmmm.... the car charger I have is basically a USB to Cigarette lighter adapter.  It's 3rd party, and any USB cord fits into it.  Maybe just grab one of those?  I'm assuming it'll still work with the new phone, since only one end of the cords are changing.

That is what I'm trying to avoid, either having to buy a second cord identical to what comes with the phone or having to lug my cord around.  I would rather have a dedicated cord for the car because I will be dumping my ipod and just use the iPhone for my in car mp3 player.  I have to stop by the Apple store anyways when my phone shows up since the Applecare is much less than buying the protection plan through Verizon, so hopefully they will have them by then.  Verizon always runs deals on accessories, but they didn't have either a car charger or the case I wanted when I ordered the phone, so they lose out.

I don't necessarily need to, but my current phone is going on 3+ years old so I had been waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out to get that one instead of getting the 4s.  I think just about everyone will be in the same boat with the operating system upgrade that comes out next week.

I'm not getting the 5 immediately and will wait a bit...  I never upgrade my phone immediately regardless.  I like to build up about $100-$150 so the hit isn't so bad.  I'm probably nearing $100 but I still won't upgrade right off the bat since I'm not much of a tech snob (no offense to anyone) and I'm perfectly happy with my 4.

Once you get one iPhone, you can pretty much upgrade for free after that if you're eligible for an upgrade with your carrier.  I bought  my 4 for $199 and  sold my 3G for $225.  I plan on doing the same next week once I have the 5.

I think I'm in the exact boat you're in.  I'm looking at the i5 simply because I'm still using my 30GB iPod classic.  I was contemplating a new iPod and thinking Android phone but for how much I use the phone I have now, an iPhone even if it isn't spectacular as a phone solves two problems.  I'm looking at roughly the same (idiotic) rate for an iPhone or an Android (Galaxy or HTC) on a contract, so I might as well get an iPod out of it.  That's probably going to be my primary usage anyway so I am pretty much looking at it as an iPod that can take phone calls too.

Any advice on how much data I realistically need?  Mostly I'd be doing stuff WiFi but some need for data will be there.  Plans in Canada suck but I'm curious what you guys use per month.

Looking at my usage, I've used 4.2 GB over the life of the phone with 670 MB sent - which is nearly 2 years.  That said, I'm on wi-fi at my house, and at my office... so that covers most of the hours in my average week.  I've also never bothered to look at it closely, I still have an unlimited plan (until AT&T decides to rip them out of early subcriber's hands that is).

My iPhone, as a phone, has been fine for me Brent...  if that's any help.  I get bad signal in valleys...  doubt you have a problem with that.  :P  Where I am, it's a big issue, but I still feel it's a very decent phone and a very fun everything else.

We have valleys.  That's where we run da buffalo into.

Adequate as a phone is really all I'm after.  I'm just not seeing any reason to not get an iPod that works as a phone instead of having an iPod and a phone.  At least that's the direction I'm leaning.  I still consider my old classic to be one of the greatest inventions ever.

And thanks Rob.  Plans here are generally 200 MB, 1GB or 3 GB per month.  Only one company has unlimited and I don't like that company much at the moment.

Yeah mine works pretty good as a phone...  adequate at least, pretty well though in general IMO.  I'm no cell phone expert though.  As an everything else though, it shines.  I went from my BB Storm to this, and I was really just livid with my BB at that point, so when I got the iPhone there was this learning curve (which is probably moot if you have an iPod), but the thing's been invaluable...

In DC I used it constantly.  I use it downtown to find a place to eat quick.  I use my map feature at work almost daily...  Forget about all the apps and stuff, that's just using the phone itself.

I'm sure Androids are pretty similar but my iPhone's a godsend.  I am not a huge music guy, but I even break out the tunes on it when I'm alone a while or going for a longer walk.  I fell in love with the thing the day I got it.  Hell, I'm only on Twitter (@Jesse_James77) because it's easy to do it from this phone and my BB sucked a nut.

I too went from a Storm (which I DID like) to an iPhone4, and the difference is staggering.  Everything just works so much better on the iPhone.

I've used Androids, my buddy has the R2 one...  He's let me use it a lot when we're out because he's anti-Apple.  Can't say things worked "better".  Similar I think...  I wasn't overwhelmed by it though.

Why It’s Unnecessary to Completely Reinvent the iPhone Year After Year (http://techland.time.com/2012/09/17/why-its-unnecessary-to-completely-reinvent-the-iphone-year-after-year/?iid=tl-main-lede&hpt=hp_bn16)

Quote
The Truth About Mature Markets

The reality is that the smart-phone market is reaching maturity. We currently sell more smart phones worldwide every year than we do traditional desktop and notebook computers. Over half the U.S. population has a smart phone, and we will quickly get to 75% saturation over the next two years. Once a market reaches the point where smart phones are today, history shows us that more evolutionary product iterations are the norm, while revolutionary leaps happen less frequently and are, in fact, more difficult.

The fundamentals of this market accurately reflect a mature growth market. Which means there are still new customers to acquire, and these customers are shopping with predefined preferences. If all of a sudden a leap in innovation occurs, it runs the risk of not being adopted by larger segments. This section of the market is the largest size by volume and appreciates more evolution than revolution because of the less technical nature of its needs and wants.

To use a parallel industry as an example, we do not expect Ford or Kia or Honda to change the world every year with their newest products. In fact, I can think of no industry that releases products on an annual basis where the expectation is radical innovation in every product. Mature markets simply don’t work that way.

Apple wants consumers in the middle part of the adoption curve who appreciate upgrades in key features they find valuable with each new generation. This part of the market wants products that are simple to use and just work. They do not want to have to tinker with or fuss with such products. That’s always been the appeal of the iPhone, which is why its satisfaction ratings are the best in the industry, and it’s exactly what the market will find appealing about the iPhone 5.

I keep hoping the electronics marketplace matures to the point where we don't have to replace phones every year (for those that do) or aren't so hopelessly outdated so quickly that there's a more natural degredation of the hardware over a longer period of time.  Pollution from electronics is the stuff that really scares me to be honest.

I'm not looking for leaps in technology anyway.  Anything released in the last 18 months will be a huge leap for me anyway as I'm just using a standard Motorola Razr flip phone anyway.  Having a music playing device that I can call/text/surf with will be more than adequate for me for quite a while.  If I can pull off Rob's stunt of selling my phone or if the company I'm going with allows for upgrades without penalty (my current carrier does not) then it's all a win to me.

Things work even better on a Windows Phone but no one knows that thanks to Microsoft's crappy marketing and company perception.

Wasn't Microsoft under some sort of court implemented ruling that restricted their marketing in the phone/tablet area for a number of years?  They certainly seem to have missed a large boat.

Android stuff is fine and really I was probably leaning more that way based on handling both phones a bit and we have an Android tablet at home.  But when it comes down to it for me I'm looking for more of a music device that does some extra stuff (as I've said repeatedly) and I do love the iPod, so it seems a more natural, logical choice.  Phone don't care so much, music device for me the iPod is the runaway winner.

The only other benefit I'm actually looking for is something I can use to access the nerdverse of yahoo fantasy sports.  Since changing jobs I can only access stuff at home.  It's been a painful ten months.

Funny how I actually liked my Storm for playing music...  go figure eh?

It was easier to make custom ringtones for it too.  I had the final seconds of the Pens last cup game as my ringtone...  I had to futz around to make that work on my iPhone.

Microsoft has been selling tablets since 2002. Granted they were pure crap running XP but they were tablets.

I can find anything about a court case restricting marketing. It really comes down to internal infighting within Microsoft and a giant company that's only focus is desktop for everything even if it doesn't make sense on a touch device. Now Microsoft has the opposite situation. Windows 8/RT/Phone works great on a touch device but scares people on a desktop. Of course according the Apple the desktop computer is dead so it might not matter anymore.

If course, crappy marketing and perception doesn't help.

I'd disagree that the Desktop is dead.  Sure, it's not what it used to be but there's no way I can do most of what I do on a tablet, phone, or even laptop.  These small devices are great on the go, they're great for media consumption, but I'm not animating a commercial on one any time soon.  Not by a longshot.

And Apple is getting ready to refresh the MacPro's, which tells me that they don't believe it either.

Maybe not dead. Steve Jobs called them trucks and not everyone needs a truck. They need an iPad (car) instead. I know I can't do my job without a desktop machine. Notebooks are too small to do proper coding.

I do engineering work on a laptop.  However, it has a docking station at my office so I get a full sized monitor and keyboard.  It is much easier to use in that mode than normal laptop mode.  I can get away with it when I need to, but I still prefer the desktop setup.  If I just needed a device to surf the web that was portable, I would probably prefer a laptop over a tablet.  I haven't had the chance to use a tablet yet, but I don't think I would like the virtual keyboard for a large amount of typing.

Ah yes... Making fun of the customers you're trying to lure away from a given product is a proven strategy for winning them over.

Of course when they make fun something like the connector, they gloss over the superior speed it's going to have... just like with all these little jabs.  All this cynicism and mocking, but the iPhone sold 2 million units in the first 24 hours.  That says a lot about Apple's brand identity, about customer loyalty, their superior product...

Is bumping phones to share playlists really something people care about?  ???

Anyone download iOS6 yet for their phone?  Buggy or OK so far?

I didn't have a chance to update my 4S yet and some of the bad reviews I've read today (maps, battery life issues, etc) have me thinking about waiting a few days before updating...

Mine works pretty well, granted I only have the iPhone 4 so I don't get all the bells and whistles that come with the 4S but it's far more responsive and smooth pre-iOS6. I did have an issue with my home wifi network after the update but that was a Apple server issue and it was quickly addressed and fixed.

I upgraded the wife's 4s last night.  Haven't had much time to play with it since it took several hours to download and configure, but no problems so far.  I was able to take a panoramic picture of the kitchen and request a sports score from Siri.  Both worked fine.  Just need to test the turn by turn directions.

Just got my 5.  So far so good.  Similar to what I had, but faster, lighter, and with Siri and a Retina display.

The maps thing has some bugs apparently, but there's a pretty awesome view on it (if you're in a city that they've gotten to so far) where you can basically fly around a full 3D model of the city to see where you are.

Downloaded OS6.  Looking forward to FaceTime on 3G networks.

I think Apply completely screwed up by going away from Google Maps.  Google Maps are far, far superior to the junk Apple just put out.  3D is nothing but a gimmick.

Don't worry.  They know it.

They're working overtime to fix their maps though... at some point in the not too distant future, they'll get caught up for the most part.

The 3D city view stuff is awesome though.

So my Mrs just got her first iPhone, the 5. We're trying to put pics from her Windows 7 laptop onto the iPhone. ITunes doesn't appear to support photos, so I'm trying to access the internal storage of the phone as if it were a flash drive / camera. Though I can see the DCIM folder on the storage, we can't write to it. My Google-fu is showing me that Apple restricts access to the iOS file system, but I would think accessing the photos shouldn't be as problematic as this. Am I missing , is there a way to access DCIM without using a 3rd party app or does iTunes support photos and we're missing it?

Jason, I'm not sure what you mean by supporting photos as I'm completely tech stupid, but I can say that I took all my pics off my BB and put them onto my iPhone without any problem.

I have to do some file shifting and I'll PM you with what I do so you can see what my process is, if you want.

Question for any of you current or past iPhone owners out there.  Like an idiot, I dropped my phone (a 4S) this weekend and the screen is cracked...badly.  I've had it just over a year, but didn't get the "insurance" when I bought it.  Everything else still works fine, the screen is just cracked (shattered) pretty badly.  I've seen online that you can try to "fix it yourself" with a new piece of glass and a few tools, etc. (and there are also places that do it for you, but it sounds like it runs close to the price of a new phone).  Since my contract isn't up for awhile yet, I don't know that just buying a new phone is an option...so I was considering trying to fix the screen.  Has anyone here tried this, and if so how difficult is it?  What is the best option, just buying a new phone? Thanks for any advice.

I've actually seen kiosks in the mall where a guy will replace the glass on your iPhone or other smart phone with a large display.  Not sure about the cost, but I'm thinking that since that's what these guys do all day, they're probably pretty good at doing the replacement.

At the store here that does that they have disclaimers all over saying they're not responsible for breaking your phone totally and make you sign a lot of papers from what I've seen.  Beware I'd my advice.

Aren't cracked phone screens an "in" thing among the hipsters? Some kids actual break the glass on their phone on purpose for status.

Yeah, I had heard that before as well.  I guess it is another example of me getting older, because I don't find my smashed up screen cool at all.  More so annoying/depressing :).

Maybe check Craigslist or something for local people who swap screens? I know it sounds shady, but a guy I used to work with would buy the materials (which cost basically nothing) and charge about $20-30 to swap screens and such. Takes about 5-10 minutes to do too. There might be someone in your area who does the same.

For those of you still on out dated Apple iPhones, Apple has released the 5s (with finger print reader) and 5c (for those that like cheap plastic color phones). iOS 7 is available with a new flat gui and is 64bit.

Here's an app recommendation for those of you who are on the road a fair amount.  I've been using Waze a good deal for navigation, and the peer data it provides on traffic conditions has been pretty useful.

But I also got into using another navigation app called Metropia.  The concept behind this one is to aid in fuel efficiency and minimize carbon emissions.  And Metropia has a reward points system where you can redeem points for gift cards. Since I started using it last year I have probably redeemed $200 worth of Amazon gift cards.  They also have Target gift cards available.  Currently it's available in parts of New York, Arizona, Texas and California.  If you're in these areas it's a decent nav app, and can be really helpful with a collecting budget.

My first smartphone was the iPhone 5s which I purchased just before the iPhone 6 debuted 4years ago.  I liked the phone and never felt the need to change until my brother decided to buy my 7 year old and 4 year old a sphero BB-8 and R2-D2, respectively, and they don’t have anything to run the app.

So the wife and I went tothe Verizon store the day after Christmas and picked up the iPhone X.  Even though I probably don’t use the iPhone to its fullest extent, I like this phone.  This is the first time I have a current phone, and it’s kind of nice.  The no home button and new gestures took a little to get used to, but IOS 11 is definitely made with this phone in mind.

I now need to get a wireless charger and hopefully the case I ordered from Amazon gets here soon...it’s quite literally on a slow boat from China!
