Title: Vehicles: Do You Buy Them?
Post by: Brian on September 2, 2008, 04:24 PM
I know we had a thread going like this in one of the other "line" threads, but I thought with the recent push of the vehicles - plus the introduction/testing out of larger vehicles like the Falcon and AT-TE - it might be a good time to discuss the vehicle subset overall.  It seems like (myself included) when we discuss running out room (or budget) lately, its the vehicles that really eat up the space in collections (whether its on display or in storage).  Has that changed anyone's vehicle collecting habits?  Do you buy them all (at least all new ones, repaints aside)?  Do you stick to one trilogy over the other?  Do you pass them altogether?

Personally, I sort of pick and choose right now - although I will say I've considered dropping the prequel vehicles strictly because of the space (and budget) issues.  I haven't done that yet (nor have I picked up an AT-TE yet), but I will say they definitely take up a lot of room and it makes it difficult for someone like me to display them all (I have a relatively small office to display anything I collect).  Anyways, I think I'd always like to collect the best version of each OT vehicle (if we start getting more "new sculpt" treatments similar to the Falcon), and right now I'm only missing the Sandcrawler and Cloud Car from vehicles that have been made.  I might be facing a bit more of a budget crunch in 2009, so the prequel vehicles - as cool as some of them are - might be something that has to go unfortunately.  I guess you can lump in the new "playset/environment" pieces into this as well, since it is a similar situation of higher prices and larger space takers.

The short answer: mostly no.

The long answer: I collect OT above all, and I have grown bored with reissues of vintage sculpts. I bought the original POTF2 offerings of all the vehicles (except the Falcon and the X-Wing, both of which had aged too badly for my tastes), and only broke my streak when the Target exclusive Skiff and Y-Wing were impossible to find in my area. I did eventually get both via eBay, but right around them I stopped having an active display area, and buying vehicles became too much work/not enough fun.

In the post '99 era, I have bought very few vehicles, namely: Saga Dagobah X-Wing, Saga Landspeeder, Saga TIE Bomber, Saga2 Imperial Shuttle (was actually a gift), the OTC Y-Wing, and lastly the Legacy Falcon.

The answer for me has always been no. Even as a kid i had little to no interest in vehicles. If i do buy a vehicle now its completely for the pack in figure.

Complete opposite.  I've always been a sucker for vehicles (SW, Joes) as a kid and the same holds true today.  The figures were/are just gravy - especially since almost every figure I own nowadays are still locked in their plastic tombs.  Vehicles always get cracked open though.

Going to keep going until I come to the point where I'll need build a second story for my storage unit.  Yes it's a silly way to collect, but it allows me to cycle in new set ups/displays constantly.

Always loved the ships and such and have a hard time leaving them behind.

I'm a huge vehicle fan. I don't have many different types, but I tend to army build them, whether it be a couple of fighters or a tank battalion. I currently have 2 AT-TEs, 2 B-Wings, 4 Spider Droids, etc. My goal for June of next year is to have the following to set up a huge tank battle:

4 AT-TEs
4 AT-APS (UBP)
2 Republic Gunships
4 V-19s
2 ARC-170s
2 V-Wings

4 Hailfire Droids
4 Spider Droids
12 AATs (4 UBP, 4 Clone Wars, 4 UBP)
4 Droid Tri-Fighters

Now, oddly enough, I like the vehicles more than figures. With my goals you might be thinking that I have a huge army, but it's actually pretty small. I don't have near enough Clones from any one source to fill up an AT-TE, let alone four. As for space, that hasn't been an issue so far. Ships hang from the ceiling, AT-TEs are rigged to the wall (vertically) and the small ground vehicles are on shelves. I probably wouldn't open 2 more AT-TEs or all 12 AATs, but rather save them for literally a rainy day in order to make a cool battle display in a more open area of my house.
I don't go quite as crazy with the Imperial/Rebel ships, but that's mostly due to the lack of ground vehicles. If Hasbro made some Rebel tanks, I'd definitly fleet build both those and Imperial Heavy Weapons. I don't currently own any Imperial walkers as I'm waiting for re-done versions of the AT-AT and AT-ST, in addition to waiting for some good TIE Fighters/Interceptors.

I just sold off most of mine.  I kept a few, ones that could stand or park with landing gear down, and were small enough to fit on the shelves.    As much as I think the BMF and AT-TE are awesome, they don't fit my scheme, so I passed.

A real key to vehicles is how willing are you to go the route of hanging crap from your ceiling.  In my one room I have half the ceiling covered in 1:18 airplanes...  If you think Hasbro toys take up room, check out an Avenger Torpedo Bomber, or a P-47 fighter...  They make Hasbro toys look lame by comparison.

Vehicles have kind of become the focus of my collection...at least where Hasbro items are concerned.  I have shelves and tables covered with TIEs, X-Wings, Jedi Starfighters, Snowspeeders, AT-STs, Speederbikes, and even a few Falcons.  One display I have in the center of my collection room/office is a makeshift Alliance hangar with the BMF, X-wing, B-wing, Y-wing with pilots and droids milling about.  I hope to have pictures up in the near future.

It could be an Air Force thing....but I really like the fighters.

Yes. Although I'm definitely short on space, I pick up the vehicles. Mercifully, I've stopped doing boxed, so I'm not picking up the 5th repack (exaggeration) of Obi-wan's starfighter this year.

Yes and no.  I do not buy all of them but close.  I do not buy every variation either.  I am happy with one TIE fighter.  I will not buy the grey, blue, white, grey, etc.  I did upgrade to the new larger winged version but won't go out and buy another color variation or that new EU version.  I still have to get the BMF and AT-TE but the price and trying to lower my min payments on credit cards won't allow for that right now.  But I do try to pick up the $20 vehicles like once a month.

I have always supported vehicles even though the majority of them are in storage bins (and more recently kept in the box because of lack of space). I will continue to support them, but going forward, especially with CW, I will become more picky. With the repaints/re-releases of ships that we all have already a few times over, it has finally hit the point of pure overkill. In the past I would always buy every single vehicle no matter what repaint deco was on it, even multiples of a choice few. Now when I see the Arc with Space Whale Deco or the Wampa deco I do not feel compelled to buy them again. When I do I will seriously examine getting rid of an older version if the deco level suropass the older one.

I think I will always support any OTC offering vehicle wise as they have become few and far between. I do not mind getting another A-Wing and would love to see more X-Wings. I am really over the prequel/CW thing, I still regret buying Aayla's starfighter and am more than content with the prequel fleet I have:

Prequel Fleet
ROTS Jedi Starfighters x7
EP2 Jedi Starfighters x6
Arc Fighters x3
Gunships x4
V-Wings x2
V-Torrent x1
AT-TE x2
AT-TP Walkers x2
TAC Trade Tanks x4
TAC Staps x4
Hailfire Droid x2
Homing Spider Droid x2
Droid Tri Fighter x1
CW Trade Tank x1
Vulture Droids x8
Faambas x2
Gungan Chariot with the Beast pulling it
Gungan Bird Horses x2
Grevious Fighter
Grevious Wheelbike
Speeder bikes x4
Barc Speeders x4
Anakin's Yellow Hot Rod
Flashspeder
Maul's Starship
Maul's Speederbike
Jango Slave 1
Geonosian Starfighter
Dooku Speederbike
Anakin Speederbike
Queens Royal Starship
Pod Racers x2

Compared to my OTC fleet the prequel **** dwarfs it, therefore I am not jonesing for more prequel vehicles. I did not even include all of the Beasts!!! I sure I missed some stuff too…...

OTC Fleet
BMF
Larger X-Wing x2
A-Wing x2
Y-Wing x4
B-Wing x2
Tie fighters x3
Tie Bombers x2
Tie Interceptor x2
Vader Tie Fighter x1
AT-AT x2
AT-ST x1
Shuttle Tydyrium x1
Speederbikes x3
SnowSpeeder x3
Sandcrawler
Landspeeder
Boba's Target Slave 1
Luke's Skyhopper
Tattooine Skiff

It would be a fun game if we were able to pit our Toy armies against each others in some kind of collectors video game battle. Collection vs. Collection, that's another topic I may start…….

I very rarely buy a vehicle mostly due to space limitations. When I do, it has to be something very cool. I have all of the vintage vehicles and will only buy a new repaint of the vintage mold when my vintage one is too broken up. I do however, plan on putting my vintage falcon in storage for the new Falcon. I typically don't collect prequal vehicles except maybe one to represent the movie or might be fun for my boys to play with outside. (ie AT-TE).

I've bought every new vehicle, repaint, resculpt to come down the pipe in the new era. Up until last year I've purchased a second sample of each when packaged in a window box, or with figures. The sheer volume of product that's been coming out and the price that comes with it has forced me to cut back on that mint in box collection. Still, I never pass up an opportunity to pick up a "fleet" vehicle discounted at 75% off.

What's supposed to fly, I hang up, older sculpts (small wing ties, vintage x-wings...) go into storage. For land vehicles I have 2 dioramas going, Battle of Hoth and a non-cannon Seperatist/ Republic battle, I also have a couple of mini scenes as well. What doesn't fit in these are put in storage. I have to admit that prequel battle is getting pretty crowded.

That is an interesting point, and maybe a whole other topic.  I won't speak for everyone, but I think quite a few of us (myself included) tend to lean a little more towards the Original Trilogy overall - but I don't know about others, but personally I have a lot more prequel stuff I think, just due to the movie years being so figure heavy.  It often seems even that non-movie years kind of tend to be more PT heavy as well.  Granted, I didn't get in on POTF2 collecting right at the beginning - but I did backtrack, and I know my prequel display case is jammed more full than the OT one at this point.  It just seems strange, because although I like the entire Saga, I definitely prefer the OT - but I seem to have more prequel stuff (or figures at least) at this point.

I only have more prequel ships because more were made. However, I did pick up a few large ties and various rebel ships on clearance when I had the opportunity, so I do have a bit of an OT fleet. If memory serves, it's something like this:

TIE fighters (large wing) - 7
Interceptors - 7
Bombers - 3
At-Ats - 6
At-Sts - 5

X-wings (FX scale) - 6
y-wings - 5
B-wings - 4
A-Wings - 6

I don't buy a whole lot of vehicles, and when I do, they're usually OT. I may get some PT/CW vehicles later on, but I do prefer the OT. My vehicle collection currently consists of...

OT
TIE Fighter (Large Wings, Target exclusive)
Y-Wing (TRU exclusive)

PT
BARC Speeder (ROTS)
STAP (E1 Sneak Preview)
Vulture Droid (ROTS)

Its a little bit surprising to me how few of us (at least who have responded) actually collect the vehicles very much.  It seems like everyone has at least a couple, but I guess I kind of figured many to most would at least have the majority of the OT vehicles.  I figured it sort of went hand in hand, particularly with those who started collecting again at the beginning of the POTF2 line.  Personally, I didn't start right back then, and the only vehicles I had from the vintage line were hand-me-downs from my cousins (a Falcon and a Snowspeeder).  I always wanted more, but it just didn't work out that way.

Anyways, I wonder why many people steer clear of the vehicles.  Is it the space, the price, or just a lack of interest?  Maybe some had them and have since sold them.  I don't know if its the fact that I always wanted more as a kid, but I've always been excited about getting new vehicles.  At this point though, I'm considering stopping the PT ones (and maybe selling the ones I have), simply because I don't have the room.  Anyways, just kind of surprised that so few seem to collect the vehicles from Star Wars (at least from those who have replied so far).

For me, it has always been the lack of interest. As i mentioned in the BMF thread, i actually bought it and returned it 30 min later. I just don't care about it. I only buy a vehicle if i cannot get the pack-in anywhere else and now with ebay, i tend to get lucky and be able to just get the figure at a fair price. I am much more excited about things like the Sarlaac than the AT-TE.

I've been giving this topic some thought again lately.  As some of you may have seen from my "for sale" thread, I recently got news that I'm getting laid off at the end of '08 - and I'm currently in the process of selling off parts of my collection.  I've always been a fan of the vehicles, although I'm really running out of room for them.  I've given thought about selling off my prequel vehicles, and just stick to OT purchases from here on, but its tough to do.  I still like them, but I'm sort of using any sales I might get to fund new purchases next year (which looks OT heavy) - or to just fund general stuff we may need.  Plus, I guess its an excuse to pare things down a bit - but I'm worried I might regret selling some of them off later on.  Its interesting to see that a number of people here don't really collect vehicles in much capacity at all, I guess I figured it might have gone hand in hand with the figures.  Of course, I only had two vehicles my entire childhood, and it didn't seem to bother me much then ;).  Plus, finding space for them is becoming more and more difficult these days.

I've generally only collected the figures.  I think it was a price thing, I could either get a $20 ship, or a couple figures (time was you could get 4, and then three and now only two...).  So I never really spent much on the vehicles.

Sorry to hear about your Job Brian. My family knows all to well how that feels.

I've actually passed on some vehicles for the first time. I'm not getting the Obi's Delta 2 and passed on the WM Gunship since I have four other Gunships already (and haven't gone into a WM in over eight months.) I never got an opener Grevious fighter and may never do so.

I still have quite a few PT vehicles, but they are stored at a friend's house, as I don't have enough room in my apartment.  I can't remember the last PT vehicle I bought, but I do have the podracers, the first Obi starship, Anakin & [purple outfitted female changling bounty hunter hired by Jango - obviously I can't remember her name right now and don't care enough to look it up]'s speeders, Dooku's speeder, and that's about all I can remember now.

OT vehicles are what I love.  I bought the Falcon and love it.  Also bought the Walmart A-Wing, but passed on the B-Wing, as I have the movie version.  I have multiple FX sized X-Wings (Lukes, Dagobah, whatever else), various Y-Wings (but not that Blue monstrocity), other A-Wings, multiple larged winged Ties, Vader's Tie, Tie Bomber, Luke's landspeeder, speederbikes, Sandcrawler, cloud car, 4 AT-AT's, 3 AT-ST's, the new Hoth speederbikes, and that might be about it.  I still can't believe I can't remember the bounty hunter's name... I can see her face, her carded figure, her alien face, outfit, helmet, but can't get her name... guess it will come to me once I hit "Post".

Oh... and sorry to hear about your job Brian.  Mine ends at the end of December 2009.

I just put all my PT vehicles in a tub and threw them in my car hole. That's been my trend lately, all my PT stuff is going in boxes in favor of OT. Just yesterday I replaced some PT displays with the Scarlac set and second Skiff.

Just like the figures, I love NEW vehilcles, and buy every one that comes out.  I do not buy repaints, which makes up at least 50% of the product these days.  I have one Gunship, one ARC, one big winged TIE, and so on...the same Jedi fighter on many different colors does nothing for me.

For those who don't buy Prequel Vehicles.  Many of these are really great, well-made toys.  The V-Wing, Grievous' ship, The Three Legged walker and the new Obi-Wan fighter are excellent.

Agreed, and that's why I'm having a tough time getting rid of all the prequel ships at this point.  That recent Obi-Wan fighter is one of my favorite vehicles of the line I think, and I really enjoy a number of the other recent vehicles as well.  The V-19, V-Wing, AT-PT, and ARC 170 are all really good ships/toys I think, and I've always been a fan of the ROTS era Jedi Starfighters as well (repaints aside).

Those three and a MUCH better scaled AT-AT seemed to be the biggest requests now for redos from the OT.

I'm still waiting on a Twin Pod Cloud car though... I know it's not as "iconic" as those others, but I'd still like to see it redone and better.

I think a better AT-ST would be better received than a new AT-AT.  The AT-ST has more potential all the way around.

-Room to be upgraded.  It can be upsized to featured a larger cockpit
-There's less plastic involved in upsizing the AT-ST
-It can ship in a significantly smaller package than the AT-AT, and package size is a great determinant in whether or not something can make it to retail.
-You can pack in a hero figure!  You could go with either Chewbacca or Han Solo in AT-ST Driver disguise as a pack-in to help drive sales.

Can't disagree with anything there, but I think the At-At would have a bigger "coolness" factor. They can certainly trick it out like the BMF.

Seriously though, I think a upsized and upgraded AT-ST would be really great.

The AT-ST can be done to-scale completely without any problem, so I'm more in favor of it...  The AT-AT actually isn't really all that important when you think about it.  There's little interaction with characters in the movie, especially "heroes", and ultimately I think that's a factor.  The AT-ST at least gets a lot more screentime.

Personally though I'm biased too...  The AT-AT is simply too large to ever be done full sized, and while it could be improved, it never would be something I'd ultimately appreciate.

I don't look at the AT-ST as "a big item of the future", as AT-ST's are small, but I surely support the AT-ST getting made over the AT-AT at this point.  AT-ST's simply would be doable to-scale no problem, and that gets my attention immediately.
