Title: Recent Purchases
Post by: I Am Sith on November 19, 2008, 04:49 PM
I made a pretty good purchase on ebay and was getting ready to post it here when I realized that we didn't have a recent purchases thread in the Reading Room.  Anyway, just scored the following TPB's in one combined auction:

Infinities - A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi
Dark Times - Volume 1, Volume 2
Empire - Volume 1, Volume 7
Rebellion - Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3
Knights of the Old Republic - Volume 2, volume 3, volume 4

I already have the Empire Strikes Back Infinities and the Empire tpb's, so if anyone needs them, shoot me a PM and we can work something out.

I had a feeling that this thread would get your attention (thinking back to the GH days when you would update almost every day with your comics haul)!  Congrats on the LE Sculpting a Galaxy.  That's one that I would love to have, but just can't justify the price.

I recently bought the trade paperbacks of Legacy (Volumes I, II and III) from Amazon.  Volume IV comes out 21 December and I must say Legacy has a great story so far.

Don't feel bad, Matt. I'm also extremely behind in my reading. I have all of the Legacy comics, but after about the first eight, I got real busy and didn't have time to keep up as they came out and now I'm regretting that. I'll have to dedicate an entire day to catching up here soon.

Speaking of comics, I haven't been by the shop in several weeks either. I'll have to do that soon so I don't rack up a couple hundred dollars.  :o

Not an actual purchase, but I was just giving the first book in the Coruscant Nights series. I hope to get to that series once I finish New Jedi Order and Legacy along with the other books in that timeline.

I'm almost done with it and I'm absolutely loving it. Can't wait to see how it ends. Due to the large amount of positive things I heard about it, I decided that this would be the next book I read even though I have a ton of other novels to catch up on in the GFFA.

I WANT to purchase the two new Clone Wars books that have come out but I like to pick this kind of stuff up used at "Half Priced Books". Normally I don't have a problem finding it that way. But I think no one is willing to spend $15 for a over sized paperback new to then have a copy to sell to the used place.

Well, I convinced myself tht $50 was a reasonable price to spend on Traitor and pulled the trigger today.  I'm calling it a birthday gift to myself.  So I now have the full NJO series in HC.  I'm very please to have finally tracked these all down.

Is  Traitor going for $50!?  I don't remember paying anything close to that for it.  Maybe that's one I got in paperback.  Congrats on completing the series.  While there were a few misses early on, I still think the NJO series is my favorite EU storyline to date.

It's going for almost twice that normally.  I think the cheapest I've seen it sell recently on ebay is $80 shipped.  It was a crapshoot finding it on Amazon though.  I contacted the seller and he said that it was a brand new copy.

I never started the series only because I didn't have all of the books.  I'm really looking forward to sitting down and reading these now.  Will more than likely go from NJO right into Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi.

Not that anyone else reads this thread, but I was just thinking that Walt God.... I mean Disney coming in and deciding what did and didn't happen in the EU, probably is exactly why this book ended like it did and why it is a stand alone. Boooooooooooooooo. Thanks for ruining Pixar and Star Wars Disney (SW still to be determined).

I'm still here Nick...

I recently picked up both the Making of Star Wars and Making of Empire Strikes Back.  Finished the Making of Star Wars and absolutely LOVED it.  Can't wait to tear into ESB and get ROTJ once I'm done.

Does anyone know if there are plans to do the same books for the prequels?  Not that I want to drop another $150 for these, but I would if they are done this well.

The "making of" books that came out along side each of the prequels were actually pretty detailed IIRC. They're not the same format as the new OT ones but they are very rich in information. If you haven't read them already you could pick up where ROTJ leaves off and be satisfied IMO.

2 out of 5.
Tarkin's early history was some what interesting, but the plot of the book was boring. I liked the interaction between Vader and Tarkin. But remove Tarkin and make it just a generic Imperial big shot and the book would have been a joke.

No. It's kind of a western feel with tuskens as the "indians" set on tatooine shortly after he leaves luke with the lars

I grabbed three TFA books at Five Below yesterday...  All of them kids books, one was a look and find with BB-8 on the cover, there was a cardboard cut-out assembly book, and the Ships of the Galaxy book. All, of course, $5 or less.

I haven't heard anything about this.  Is it a new story tying him into the Rebels version?  Or some kind of tie back to the Legends stories that introduced him?
Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: GrandMoffNick on April 20, 2017, 04:54 PM
It starts with the Imperials finding him after being banished by the Chiss and then works through his ascension through the ranks. I'm 100 pages in. Finding time to read is hard with a kid and getting old
Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: Matt_Fury on April 20, 2017, 05:50 PM
I'm a couple of chapters in and Thrawn mentions meeting Anakin Skywalker while he was still with the Chiss.  Looks like Outbound Flight is no longer part of legends!

I meant to mention this last Thursday Dave, but I'm not sure a 9 year old will love this book. I enjoyed it but mostly as the Thrawn lover that I am. Fun to read about his meteoric rise through the Imperial ranks but maybe not enough to hold a kid's attention

Admins, please feel free to move this to the appropriate thread, I wasn't sure where I should post it.

The wife is forcing a renovation of the basement and I had to choose between Kubricks, Lego and my book collection.  Unfortunately the book collection lost.  Do any of you know what the appetite is for pre-Disney era books on the secondary market (i.e., not marked as "Legends")?  Trying to determine if it makes more sense to try and sell these or just donate to a local book store in my area.  Thanks in advance for any advice given.
Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: Dave on April 6, 2021, 02:10 PM
I know about five years ago I was picking up some of the books aimed at 10 year olds - Young Jedi series.  I don't know if these were Legends or not.  They were all going for roughly face value on eBay, so not a ton of money, but you might get some cash back for your trouble if you sell them.
Title: Re: Recent Purchases
Post by: I Am Sith on April 6, 2021, 03:05 PM
Thanks for the reply Dave.  I've been looking also and there are one-off editions that could score more than face value as they are limited run hard covers, but like you said, most are face value or less depending on the series.

I may post them on the Classifieds first to see if there is any interest before trying eBay, but I ultimately think these will end up at the used book store in the end.

Yeah, outside of rarer editions I don't think they are worth much.  I would bring whatever you have to half price books and see what they offer.  I think I ended up just donating mine years ago.
