Title: JediDefender 2009 Hasbro Star Wars Fans' Choice
Post by: Jeff on July 31, 2009, 01:49 PM
After some discussion among the JD Staff, we've decided to use the results from the 2009 JediDefender Wishlist: Tournament of Champions (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=19457.msg435631#msg435631) for the 2009 Hasbro Fans' Choice Poll (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Conventions/San_Diego_Comic_Con_2009/Hasbro/2009_Presentation&image=73.jpg&img=64&tt=).

We've been running the JD Wishlists for the last 5 years and we feel they are a pretty accurate representation of what the fans here at JD actually want to see Hasbro make.  Hasbro has always complimented us on the lists and the fact that they are honest opinions, including both resculpts we'd like and all-new figures.

So, like I was saying, we're going to use the JD Wishlist results... with a twist!  Here are the '09 JD Wishlist Results (with officially confirmed figures removed from the list):

1. Bom Vimdin16. Emperor Palpatine (Senate Duel)
2. Weequay (Skiff Master)17. Endor Rebel Soldier (Super Articulated Resculpt)
3. Bespin Han Solo (Super Articulated Resculpt)18. Fozec
4. Torryn Farr19. Kithaba
5. Doctor Evazan (Super Articulated Resculpt)20. Lumat/Wompus
6. Ponda Baba (Super Articulated Resculpt)21. Nien Nunb (Super Articulated Resculpt)
7. Hoth Princess Leia (Super Articulated Resculpt)22. Nikto (Vintage version)
8. Rebel Fleet Trooper (Super Articulated Resculpt)   23. Sim Aloo
9. ANH Grand Moff Tarkin (Super Articulated Resculpt)24. Zam Wessel (Super Articulated Resculpt)
10. Hoth Rebel Soldier (Echo Base)25. Tonnika Sisters (2-Pack)

13. Sergeant Doallyn28. Imperial Commander (SA Black Tunic)
14. Admiral Ackbar (Super Articulated Resculpt)29. Guri
15. Cliegg Lars30. ??

See #30 there, the one with the question marks?  We want your help in deciding who should get that slot!  It's one last chance to lobby for one last figure to get promoted to the “Top 30” list.

Does this mean I can't vote for Vlix?  Bollocks!

I guess I'll have to vote for Uncle Owen instead.

I am torn between Dash Rendar and Ackmena.

Ackmena will be my choice.

I really want a new Dash, I thought he made the list.

I got confirmation from Hasbro that Wooof is a lock for 2010.

Wooof was confirmed in a Q&A by Jeff last year

http://hanshideout.blogspot.com/2008/12/hasbro-star-wars-q-session-4.html

2. The 2009 RotJ Wave. You've confimed a new Leia of some sort (Slave Girl perhaps), Palace Guard Wooof, an Ewok, and a new Malakili. How about a hint at the other two figures in the wave - will we be running around with one of the figures from that wave yelling, "It's a trap!" Or will one of the new figures want to take our AT-STs out for a drive?

** We will not be revealing any more specific characters from the EpVI wave right now - look for a full preview in an upcoming issue of Star Wars Insider. One note - it turns out that we will not be doing Wooof after all, and instead have made sure he's in the 2010 lineup. In his place is another Nikto guard.

As much as I want an Owen, I think in due time that's a given that Hasbro is going to make a new one anyway (Beru too).  Especially since the PT ones have sold great, and the old ones just got recycled one last time at TRU... if I felt that Hasbro might not make him he'd get my vote.

So with my rambling out of the way, my vote goes to Bastila Shan.

I vote for Emperor Palpatine (senate duel),  but you guys need to be more clear about which Palpatine you're specifying.  On the full story for the front page article you listed Emp. Palpatine (office duel).  This is him in red robes for the Mace +3 Jedi fight.  The one I'm voting for is the dark gray robes for the duel vs. Yoda in the senate chamber.   I wish they'd make both really.

Kitster/Wald 2-pack. I'm voting for this one 'cos I think Hasbro will make all the others I want from the list eventually, but they probably need encouragement to make kids, which don't seem to be that popular at the big H.

Wow, this was super hard to narrow to just one.
Here are my top three...strange they are all female choices...

- Ann and Tann Gella
- Barriss Offee (Super Articulated Resculpt)
- Bastila Shan

Anyway, after giving this some thought, I decided to go with Bastila Shan from these three.

I figure Hasbro will get around to Bariss Offee one day. And the Gella twins...heh, either they'll get made shortly or they'll be another Tonnika Sister Act. Having Bastila made opens up the door more for more KOTOR figures to be done.

Wedge Antilles (Snowspeeder Super Articulated Resculpt)

Lots of good choices on there, and I'd be happy with most of them.  I was tempted to vote for Cold Weather Obi-Wan from the CW, but I'm guessing/hoping that will be made eventually anyways.  It was down to Wedge or Owen Lars for me - and since we can't seem to ever get a regular release, single carded, Wedge Antilles figure - I gave it to Wedge, the most underrated man in SW. :)

I'll go with ANH Owen.

Question:  Why are the Tonnikas still on the list since when announcing this Hasbro even stated they hope fans don't waste a vote for them since they won't make them?  Similarly, in a recent Q&A they said they wouldn't make Ackmena.  I mean, I'm all for voting for who you want, but I think Hasbro already knows we want them, but (for different reasons) neither Ackmena nor the Tonnikas will be made.

My vote:   JOCASTA NU

Question: Why are we accepting nominations for (Ackmena) and why do we have characters on our list (Tonnikas...) that have been put off limits by Hasbro for this poll... they stated at Comic Con that Toy Fair has been instructed to not even include these in the final poll... isn't this just wasting voting spots?

Off Limits:
Tonnika Sisters (either)
any character based on George Lucas himself.
Grebleips (the ET senators)
Tyvokka & Jedi Wookiees
any live-action character from the Holiday Special

Because they've been instructed by Lucas film that these are off limits. Any would be wasted slots.

With the Tonnika Sisters, Lucasfilm never got permission from the Actresses to use their likeness for toys (or something like that.)

The E.T.'s are owned by a different studio. Lucas had special permission to use them himself.

The Holiday Special - Lucas is trying to destroy all evidence of it's existence.

I can't say for sure about the other two, but there are reasons dictated by Lucas film.

I'd buy a Mallatobuck figure. He'll she'd be an easy repaint of any number of Chewbacca figures out there. Easy money for Hasbro.
Lumpy could be a nice pack in, or a two pack with another small figure.

And who wouldn't want an "Itchy" figure! LOL.

Seriously though, I'd buy a Chewbacca family set if it were made. Totally serious on that.

Do not get me wrong, I would also buy all of the figures you mentioned. The SW Holiday Special does have a few redeeming qualities. I find a lot more parts in that show more bearable than the 1997 SE ROTJ Musical Number. That made me sink in my seat in the theater. I was actually embarrassed of that scene. I had nothing to do with yet I honestly felt embarrassed that feeling still lingers. I take the SW Holiday Special for what it was a 70's Variety Show cashing in on the latest craze. The Y-Bith is awesome, I would love that figure!

But I really would love a Ackmena figure to tend bar.

and then later palps45895 reworded my question...

Unless I missed something, Scott hasn't addressed either question... why are we sending nominees for something Hasbro stated they won't make when we aren't accepting nominees for confirmed figures?  Both are equally wasted spots.

I have not seen the official rules...so I am waiting for Jeff to answer that since he has them.  I know they have said those figures were off limits in the past but its our list, you know what I mean.  I know other sites specifically said that but it could be their own interpretation of what Hasbro has said in the past.

I don't see it being an issue. I for one think their inclusion reinforces the collectors desire for such figures and to work on getting the proper legal releases. Plus, using that rationale, figures other than the "off limits" ones might have already been in the works so they would essentially be "wasted" too. Their inclusion in the list will just end up influencing the release order and those with a higher tally coming out first.

I have not seen the official rules...so I am waiting for Jeff to answer that since he has them.  I know they have said those figures were off limits in the past but its our list, you know what I mean.  I know other sites specifically said that but it could be their own interpretation of what Hasbro has said in the past.

What I understand from the info Hasbro presented at Comic Con is that they will have a panel (consisting of whom is unknown) to sort through the candidates.  That panel will make the determination on which characters end up in ToyFare's online poll.  I think this Hasbro/LFL/ToyFare panel will probably be responsible for weeding out those candidates that are submitted but are verbotten by Lucas Licensing.

Still, I think it's important for the fan sites that are participating to be vocal about which characters they really want.  Will it have an impact?  That's debatable.  But if Hasbro sees results from a dozen+ of their Q&A sites that show people want the Tonnikas, Ackmena, Tyvokka or other forbidden characters, maybe it will get the wheels turning at Lucas Licensing and some change could take place on the so-called "forbidden list".

We've definitely been seeing some very strong trends in the voting over at JTA.  When you let people pick 30 characters, you're bound to see a number of them recurr.  And I think with the annual polling that JD conducts that this site was already well positioned to take part in the poll.  As for when things get to ToyFare's poll?  That remains to be seen.  But looking back at the last Fan's Choice poll, it was definitely a positive experience all the way around.  We've gotten nearly ALL of the characters that were candidates in that last poll over the past few years.  And I think that this group of 30 Fan Choice poll candidates will definitely be the source of a lot of figures for the next few years.

I have not seen the official rules...so I am waiting for Jeff to answer that since he has them.

"nominate the top 30 most-wanted Star Wars figures from across the films and Expanded Universe"

There is nothing in there about 'except for those that we say we can't ever make'.  Like others have said, if it's going to truly be a measure of what our "top-requested" figures are, then why not put them on the list so Hasbro can see (yet again) that we want them?

I'm sure it will annoy some folks to see "wasted" votes in their eyes, but you could argue that about any number of figures on our top-30 list that Hasbro has already mentioned they have 'planned" for 'the next few years'.

whose vote is this supposed to be for, the real JD community or random people who will never return to the site again after that one post?

the random posters make this feel a bit fraudulent and not very collective of the site want

Which is why only 1 of the top-30 slots is open for polling at this point.  The top-29 on our list represent exacly what the 'regular' JD members would like to see (or at least the members who care enough to vote in the wishlist poll every year  :P).

At the same time, like Scott said we're not idiots and it's pretty easy with IP traces to figure out which votes are real and which votes are "friends".   ::)  Needless to say that the votes are being counted correctly.

Hi,

I know that, having just registered, I am "new" here... but do you mind if I ask what is wrong with telling other friends to come over and vote for a figure you already know you both want?

You guys make it sound like something sinister or prankful or something...

I read your qna answers from time to time, but frankly have never registered before because there has never been a real reason to do so. Now that I'm a member, I will occassionally post my opinions and news. But, back to the point, is there a problem with the fact that a fellow Rebelscum member emailed me and told me about your 1-figure only poll?

In all honesty, this attitude makes me feel like... "why would I even want to join here? New members are obviously not welcome." Now you guys were here first - - I get that. But if you want new folks to come on board and make this site as big as Scum and other sites, why do you want to dissuade people from joining in? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway... I just thought I'd mention this after reading all that before I got to the point.

I would like to place 1 vote for: (you apparently guessed it) ....    Jocasta Nu

I had assumed based on your having an open vote, that you will count it, but I guess you guys are planning on editing the vote to your own opinions.

Why are you even having the voting open at all?  ::)
Title: Re: JediDefender 2009 Hasbro Star Wars Fans' Choice
Post by: P-Siddy on August 18, 2009, 12:14 AM
I think the point is that there are several members that participate in all kinds of forums here on Jedi Defender and are voting in good faith. Yes, it is an open poll as you can see from the various choices offered. Now, we get newbies from Scum that are only here to vote for Jocasta Nu en masse, post once or twice and that is all they contribute to this site. Therefore it skews the results. Let's reverse the situation: how would you like tons of rookies joining Rebel Scum and voting for one particular character and making it obvious? Wouldn't that make you, as a regular, a little upset that your voice is being lost? Now, I'm all fine with you joining and participating in our forums! Welcome! But, look at it from our point of view instead of whining that we're being selective.

I was just checking out the posts and noticed this conversation and thought I'd chime in again...

I'm new here. But I've started posting and contributing a bit (or detracting, as one may feel...  :D). What makes you think all of the new guys aren't going to contribute in the future? I've already started, for better or worse  ;D.

And, as was previously pointed out in this thread, if you're not going to count the new members votes (whatever they are for) in an honest, fair manner, why are you posting the offer to join and vote on your front page? That seems pretty ridiculous that you would advertise for people to join and vote and then say their vote doesn't count...

I sincerely doubt that Hasbro had that kind of attitude in mind with all of this. And I wonder if you're new site ownership goes along with this idea to ostrasize the new members and their votes, just because you don't like them...?  :(

I don't think anyone is aiming to discourage new members from signing up and sticking around and contributing and enjoying themselves.  At the same time, we'd rather that JD's top-30 reflect the wishes of the membership here, and not the membership of other sites.  So there's a balance that needs to be struck.

Come on now, I'm sure we all know that the JD staff would never exclude new members from voting, I think Jeff made that clear.  What he has said is that people who are trying to unfairly influence a vote by registering multiple times will be excluded, as can be determined by IP addresses.

Just my $0.02, but if below your screenname, its says "1", I'm not sure you really have enough experience on JediDefender to complain you are being wronged.

That being said, if people take a poll as their opportunity to join, that's great, but part of joining is contributing beyond that vote.

If they were all actual new members who are finally stepping out of lurker mode and have decided to register and vote, that's fine.  We welcome them and their votes.

However, we've got some IP data that suggests a number of these "new members" are all coming from the same ISP Host.  So, either one Internet Service Provider suddenly has had a rash of it's users decide to register at JD and vote for Jocasta Nu or (more likely) something fishy is going on.

No one's vote is arbitrarily being cast aside simply because they are a new member... but a number of votes are being cast aside because they are coming from fraudulent sock accounts.

In summary - actual, real new member votes = ok, 1-2 people attempting to cast multiple votes via a bunch of sock accounts = bad.

Well said.
As the other guy who agreed with Carp on the newbie vote thing I think Rob summed it up the best. A balance is needed, I also like what Kenobi said but no one is discouraging new members from joining, just do not abuse the system, contribute to it! If the contribution is complaining about valid concerns from long standing members and somewhat dissing our staff that says a lot to me. Didn't we move on after Jeff explained that the staff is keeping an eye on the IP stuff? I know I acknowledged his explanation and to me put it to rest. As Jeff mentioned there has been some shady activity validating some of our concerns......

BTW - If I have not mentioned it already: ACKMENA

Understood. Thanks for the explanation, Jeff, and I apologize for the confusion. :-\

I do think that there are some people signing up here and going through the same process as everyone else to make their voices heard, and they shouldn't be treated like they're somehow tainting the results. When an open vote is advertised to your readers, new people signing up to participate is to be expected.

Again, it's not my intention to make a big stink, just trying to make everyone feel welcome. Have fun, and **cough**ACKMENA**cough**. :)

I've got another question for you guys, now that everyone's paying attention:

Why is your site contributing a list with so many results that have already been confirmed as forthcoming by Hasbro???? And ones deemed off limits by them... I was at Comic Con when this was announced, and they very plainly made it clear that Holiday Special figures (like Ackmena, whom I would love to own, btw) are off limits for this poll...?

On your list, I note the following figures that have been confirmed ALREADY by Hasbro:
Bom Vimdin (confirmed 2011, per Hasbro qna)
Tonnikas (obviously off limits)
Han Bespin (confirmed 2010, per Hasbro qna, and also reported in fall esb wave 2010 source)
Evazan (confirmed 2010, per Hasbro qna, also Stan has confirmed casting for new mold)
Ponda Baba (confirmed 2010, per Hasbro qna, also Stan has confirmed casting for new mold)

That there alone is 5 more spots you guys could open up for new figures, when these are already confirmed as forthcoming by not just "spies", but by Hasbro themselves????

It seems like you are wasting, quite literally, 20% of your figure nomination opportunites...

I don't know why the members here aren't more concerned about this waste of opportunity. Heck, we could get 5 more figures from this little poll in there and make EVERYONE happy. There are only a handful of figures in this thread with more than 1 vote...???

And to those that are going to say "we'd like to impress upon Hasbro how much we want the Tonnika... yadda yadda"...

Do we really have waste a spot for this?
Why not just add a little intro paragraph to your poll list indicating how highly the Tonnikas scored, but that you pulled them from the list because of the rules...

Who's Stan?

"Stan" is a Hasbro employee who occassionally drops bits about what's going on in development when he sees stuff. And, as far as I recall, he's never been dead wrong. Sometimes, it takes a year or two to see stuff out he mentioned, but it usually comes. BTW, Hasbro plans and tools the whole line over a year in advance...

Anyway, NEWS FLASH:

Ripped From The Headlines (Or Whatever)
8/17/2009 3:20:34 PM | Reported by Adam_May

Culled from Hasbro's own round-up of Q&A input some new items have been spotted in the passages. A new Attack of the Clones C-3PO will part of a second Target Geonosis Arena wave next year if the first wave sells well! The TWO Force Unleashed multipacks are confirmed — each with FIVE figures. There will be no direct "re-packs", just new figures, and significant repaints of some existing figures. Included will be TWO versions of Starkiller, Proxy, a variant of Juno Eclipse, and a few trooper variants.

A "super articulated" Bespin Han Solo is confirmed for 2010. Cantina alien Bom Vimdin is confirmed for 2011. Expanded Universe Anakin Solo (to go with Jacen and Jaina Solo) is also likely to come out next year or 2011. Hasbro has confirmed new versions of Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan next year. A new Wuher is on tap for 2010 or 2011. [Editor's Note: Might these Cantina figures come with sections to make up the "distillery"?]

Why are you even having the voting open at all?  ::)

Thanks for joining the site, you are most certainly a welcome addition as are all the other new members who have joined since the polling started.

First off, since you are new, a brief history lesson, when the site was started (perhaps before you were even collecting) it wasn't as a competition with any other Site.  It was just one more place to go for like minded folks.

With that in mind, please don't interpret this wrong, but I have ZERO interest in being as big as Rebelscum.  I was at RS from the early days (back when Phillip had just an email group), and saw it grow, that thing is a machine and has people who make their living doing computer stuff on staff and as owners.  That stuff is hard work.  They are a premier site and deserve that status.  But you might find it hard to believe but little JD.com here is considered a top 5 fansite by Hasbro and LFL.

Second, again, your shiny newness is blinding me here, JediDefender has been doing a Fan Poll for 5 years and delivering the results to Hasbro at SDCC each year.  I know some other sites have imitated this lately as well and that is great, the more interaction with Hasbro the better.

Finally, the Vote for 1 figure really didn't have to be, there was much discussion about pulling the confirmed figures off our list we already had spent WEEKS compiling and then letting the staff pic the final few.  We had a staffer give up his vote for the people because participation is fun.  And to let members (new and old) who missed the Jedidefender Wishlists get one last chance to chime in.

So are we being dick-ish for not having an open free for all? maybe.  Are we scaring away new members cuz we don't want to recreate all the work we already did a month ago?  perhaps.  Will we let a bunch of 1 post voters with identical IP addresses skew the vote? doubt it.  If we have to watch the vote with just one figure, think of the pain it would have been to open all 30 slots to the masses.

Rest assured if you are a 1 post voter with a unique IP your vote counts.

We are not a closed society, but more of a Gated Community/Neighborhood.  We let members/residents, their invited guests and delivery folks in, but we don't encourage drive by traffic or solicitors.  It keeps the kids safe.

Chiming in a bit late but this is exactly what's been done over at Snowtroopers... anyone below 40 posts isn't allowed to vote and if a new member joins and suddenly spams more than 40 posts, they get disqualified anyway...

i vote for Bastila Shan.

I almost picked Palpatine Office Duel, but he's already on the list in Senate duel form, hope he eventually gets made.

3rd pick was Magnaguard SA, but i know they'll eventually get to him & i hope they don't half-ass it to make us buy it again.  Eg. knees, no ankles or ankles and no knees
