Only a week to go until the draft, and we've only got 5 teams in.

Yeah, we need 8 as a minimum.   :-\

How often do I need to change my roster?
Title: Re: JediDefender Fantasy Basketball 2009-2010

The line ups vary from day to day, but you can pick your best starters and just roll with them for as long as you want without changing anything.

If someone gets hurt or you want to play someone else you need to obviously make those moves.

One more and we're at a nice number.  I just get back that night from a conference, so not sure if I'll be at the draft.  I was waiting for Rob to ask for it to get moved.   :-X

You can probably finish last again without going to the draft.

Oh cool, okay see you there next Wednesday night.

I've said plenty of times that Basketball just isn't my game, yet I managed to win one championship.

Let me know next time you beat me in a head-to-head Football match-up

You probably know a little something about Shaq too.

That's how I am with hockey, something about an Ovechkin and a Crosby and I think Brodeur still plays.  Outside of that, I'm clueless.

The one that really got me was Kidd.  But you grabbed the other Mavs PG right before I was going to pick him too.  Then I figured I'd go Howard 2 picks later, but he didn't last.  The other fun one was how Dwight Howard and Chauncy Billups were the guys I had my eye on for my 2nd and 3rd rounders (they were projected to go around my second and third picks) but both were gone 5 picks before my second rounder...  Billups was projected 15 and went 10, Howard was projected at about 20 but went 11.   But that's how these things go I guess.

After you took Kidd, I had to go boom or bust with Arenas... if he's healthy and stays that way, I'll be sending you a thank you card at the end of the season.  If he gets hurt again, I'm in huge trouble.

I agree, it's going to look awesome in 2nd place.

Are you planning on finishing third then?  ???

The one that really got me was Kidd.

I wound up having to bench Kidd after a while last year because he doesn't score, when he does it's at a low FG% and he was turning the ball over too much.  You can't play him every game or he really starts to hurt you, but when you do play him the REB are nice from the position, but seriously, you shouldn't need REB from your PG.  His AST and STL are good but he'll drag you down in other areas.

The other thing with Kidd is the mileage on the tires, I felt like this year could be the one...

After you took Kidd, I had to go boom or bust with Arenas... if he's healthy and stays that way, I'll be sending you a thank you card at the end of the season.  If he gets hurt again, I'm in huge trouble.

It'll be bust with Arenas and you'll be in huge trouble.  He's another one I had to bench with the TO and bad FG% back in the day.

Are you planning on finishing third then?  ???

You can consult with my squad's name for the answer to that question *

Okay as for last night's question about it being most important in basketball to have a "top 5 pick" moreso than any other sport, here's what happened my last 3 years:

2008 - 7th pick overall

Round 1 - Dirk Nowitzki
Round 2 - Steve Nash
Round 3 - Yao Ming
Round 4 - Jason Kidd
Round 5 - Kevin Durant

2007 - 6th pick overall

Round 1 - Steve Nash
Round 2 - Yao Ming
Round 3 - Vinsanity Carter
Round 4 - Gerald Wallace
Round 5 - Antawn Jamison

2006 - 8th pick overall

Round 1 - Gilbert Arenas
Round 2 - Steve Nash
Round 3 - Boris Diaw
Round 4 - Ron Artest
Round 5 - Zydrunas Ilgauskas

In summary, last 3 years, I never got close to sniffing a top pick.  But with some careful management and thrifty late-round selections, it worked anyhow.

Yeah, it turns out that my own recollections aren't even accurate.... the year I won I had the 9th pick in a 12 team league.  The year I finished 2nd I had the 2nd pick in an 8 team league.

I handed you Nowitzki on a platter by foolishly taking Brand ahead of him.  I blame myself for your winning last year.

Like others and duly noting a small league, I rather like my team.  Injuries will be the key and if goes anything like hockey and to a lesser extent football goes, I'll be screwed already.  Nash, Camby and Okafor are already hurt to some greater or lesser degree.  Okafor doesn't bother me given the price paid but Nash has me concerned.  I was counting on Dressel to take him at the turn and leave Williams to me.  Alas, was not to be.

Don't, believe me you had lots of help.

Nash has me concerned.  I was counting on Dressel to take him at the turn and leave Williams to me.  Alas, was not to be.

Nash was a big part of 3 straight titles, but I know when enough is enough.  Nash's numbers were down across the board last year and he could be in line for even further drops this year.  Deron Williams, however, is ascending.  He too was part of one of my teams the year before last.

Don't get me wrong, Nash is still solid and I still wanted him.  I'm just not sure he's 2nd round solid these days.

I know it's only one game.  But he's  .476, .889, 1 three, 29 points, 2 boards, 9 assists, and a merficul 3 turn overs.  I'd like a few more boards and a steal or two a night, but I'm encouraged.

You countered that his TO's were bad and yadda yadda yadda, so when he had a good game right out of the gate, I thought it was worth mentioning.

For what it's worth, looking at your squad I'm not sure you need Arenas to do that well.  It's alarmingly solid.

Thanks.  Like I keep saying, I still haven't quite figured out fantasy basketball, so I'm slightly unsure of what I've got, although I think it looks good (with a league this small most people's teams probably look good).  At the moment guys staying healthy is my biggest worry.

Did you post this before or after I decided to take a flier on Oden?
Title: Re: JediDefender Fantasy Basketball 2009-2010
Post by: Morgbug on October 28, 2009, 03:41 PM
I agree with Dressel - most people's rosters look really good.  They're loaded and it's mostly injuries and how guys perform this year (I know - duh).  Arenas for example is a total stud if he plays all year, but I can say the same about Camby to a certain degree.  The odds of either playing a full year is pretty interesting but also unlikely.

I really like my team, but there's a huge ton of risk with much of my squad.  I need Nash and Camby to remain mostly healthy - I grabbed Barbosa essentially as a handcuff for Nash; there were other guys I wanted more at that point.  I need Marion to have a comeback kind of year though my expectations are not for a return to his former lofty status, rather just be an excellent fill for utility.  That may or may not happen.  I need Okafor to really benefit from playing with CP3 and not impact West too much on the boards - if that happens then Camby just sits on the bench unless he's playing well.  My biggest concern is Brand, though at least this year I drafted him where he should have gone.  If he returns to 20/10 and a pair of blocks then I'm really happy.  He's two years removed from his achilles injury, which is largely why I didn't draft Jefferson.

I'm really only happy with Durant, Joe Johnson (I do feel I stretched to take him) and David West.  The rest have doubts, but I can look at anyone else's roster and feel the same way.  Scott's roster seems to small to me - he'll put up tons of points, threes and get assists and steals, but I think he's going to lack in blocks and rebounds to a great degree.  Just initial impressions and I could easily be wrong.

It's part of why I really prefer larger leagues, because then management seems to play more of a role.  Small (as in 8 team or less) leagues always seem to have loaded teams and a very full waiver wire.  I honestly feel a little empty from winning baseball.  Sure, Rob got hosed with injuries, but everyone had some to a lesser extent so it was really how your draft worked out and a few key free agent pickups.  But I could easily drop a pretty good player and find another pretty good player without really suffering.  Remember Scott's comment and joy after I dropped Ibanez (for the second time)?  How much did that really hurt me?  10-12 team leagues are the most enjoyable to me, even when I don't win.

Well, Brand didn't do too well tonight.   :-\  He's not hurt, but certainly not the guy you want as your starting center if that's how he'll play.  At the same time though I can't feel too bad.  If Horford is going to play like that all season, I'll probably forget all about Brand.  (Okafor had a decent night too considering how little he's practiced and Camby has had a nice half thus far)

I'm suffering QB-disease in basketball.  I have a slew of very nice centers, none of them first rounders, but a good number of guys that should be putting up good numbers.  But they only put up good numbers when they're on the bench.  Aaargh.

And I did not draft your basketball team Rob, just to clarify.

And Steve Nash is my new basketball man-crush.

Not quite, not after 8 games.  Besides, I got Deron Williams in his place and that's after taking Amare Stoudemire.

Nash also has a back problem that flares up every so often.  I'm going to see Nash do this for a whole season before I regret taking Deron Williams.

But yeah, it was a very nice 1/10th of a season for Nash so far.  Also not too bad for Deron.

Someone needs to tell Arenas he's going about it the wrong way if he's trying to get the team name changed back to the Washington Bullets.

I suppose I was due for some bad luck but it's starting to look like my hockey team out there.
Johnson has a flu bug (minor enough)
Magette dislocated a finger
Thornton, my consolation prize off the wire after Collison and Millsap got picked up by others lands square on his back and basically misses a couple of weeks.
Robinson goes back to the bench after a grand two days of starting?  Yeah, not totally a surprise but he didn't play that bad.

Yeesh.  I still can't pick the right center on the right day.  I figured I had it all sorted out with Magette and Thornton at utility and then Nash/Johnson/Durant/West in the first four and then picking from Gasol/Horford/Camby for the center slot.  Then it all went to ****.  I'm actually looking forward to the all-star break.

Congrats Rob, awesome win considering the loss of Arenas.

I had you tied last night for a short while (there was a three way tie at 46 points going into the fourth quarter of the Phoenix game), but only getting 5 points from Nash hurt.  Even more painful was having Joe Johnson not play.  Still, I think there was a point where someone else had taken a point from you but you got it back during the course of the night, so the margin got bigger.

Pity, I was all prepared to come in here being a totally arrogant ass because I would have then been the 2009 champion in golf, hockey, football, baseball and basketball.  Missed it by that much.  Still, came close but really impressive to lose Arenas and still hold.  Congrats again.

Thanks.  Like I mentioned in the hockey thread, the more I looked at the numbers the more convinced I was that you'd be winning the whole thing.  Only about 20 points separated us from it being even closer... it was a difference of something like .002% in that category.  With no Arenas, no Lebron for the last 4 games, no Monta Ellis all last week (flu), and no Al Jefferson for 3 games (personal), and no Baron Davis for the last two (wrist), I was pretty convinced that one of you guys would pass me at the end.

And Ellis made 4 of 22 shots two nights ago but I gambled and started him anyway knowing that it would come down to points and assists... lucky me.

So anyway, yeah, thanks.  I don't like taking a lot of credit for fantasy sports wins given how much luck there is, but I think this was one of the best drafts I've ever had playing these games with you guys, and it's always fun to win.

Now, to go change my tag to "*5-Time* JD MLB/NFL/NBA Fantasy Sports CHAMPION."

COngrats guys on the wins/trophies.

I just have had some really crappy luck in hoops the last few years.  Roy and Butler just killed my team.  I was a little short of scorers, assists and rebounders.  But solid everywhere else.  Nobody really got hurt, they just played like ****.  Ginobli was a good make up pick but I didn't get a lot of help anywhere else.  Oh well...off to baseball

As for screwing up the season, winning only matters when other people try to win.  I looked back at the draft results and you had an awesome draft.  I basically did a coinflip between Nash and Roy and won that one.

I used to play when I was younger and enjoyed it.  I went to the driving range before I moved up here last year and was very surprised that I could still hit a ball pretty well.  It'd been like 10 years, maybe 15.

As for fantasy golf, I did that one year too... just couldn't get into it.  So I bowed out from here on out mostly because of....

As for screwing up the season, winning only matters when other people try to win.

....I didn't feel like I could add anything to the competition, so I figured I'd leave it for the serious fans.

I looked back at the draft results and you had an awesome draft.  I basically did a coinflip between Nash and Roy and won that one.

Indeed.  The draft I had was stellar... I managed to find Ellis and Scola in late rounds, and had a replacement for Arenas when he turned into a dip**** again.

Dressel coin-flipped between Nash and Williams... looks like you won out there as well.
