Of the two or three things I am proud of in this hobby, getting most everyone to believe that Han's coat on Hoth is actually Brown and not Blue (Including Hasbro!) ranks right up there...this goes back to my days over at SSG (which was going on 10 years ago!)  Anyhoo...I wrote a story for our forums which can be read:

Hoth Han Revisited (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=5384.0)

I display a Blue Coat Han in my comparison cases just out nostalgia.  It was nice of Hasbro to make all 4 varieties and each one is neat in its own right and satisfied everyone

Hasbro made an ad about the controversy and they actually put the coat on display at C4

Anyway...Jesse just found this pic a few weeks ago...too bad this wasn't around when the whole brew-ha-ha went down

I just found a fun read over at Rebelscum from back in 2003 when the Hoth Han Saga figure was first revealed...man I sound like a whiny bitch :-[

NEW Han Solo in Hoth Gear - Has BLUE COAT!!! Complaints Thread! (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=698752&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1)

This thread has one of my favorite Gregg moments, where I call Jesse "Uncle Jesse" and he bitchslaps me for being off topic ;D

It's actually a repack of the Hoth Recon Patrol (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/html/TLC/battlepacks/hothrecon.html) Battle Pack version.  ;)

I was always more upset the vintage Han had yellow/brown legs as opposed to the correct grey color.    ;D
Kenner had a ton of coloring issues with the old figures.  The regular Han had black pants and they should have been navy.  The Cantina aliens were all off.  NBD IMO.
The old Han was great for the holster alone.  Always a favorite of mine.

Oh my God that Rebelscum thread is bringing back so many memories.

But yeah this debate was heating up just as I started posting online. I never really cared about the color, but I always saw the brown coat when I watched ESB and actually paid attention to the coat color. I care more about the color being screen accurate, but I do think it's awesome that Hasbro continually gives us both colors. I think this was the first time I actually felt like HAsbro actually listens to us. Ironically I own the blue coat figure from the Droid Factory pack from a few years ago. Definitely need to track down the brown hood up Han figure since the hood down figures are awful.

OK, first my Hoth Han Vintage to modern thoughts...

First, I loved Hoth Han as a kid, and he always got mixed in as a scientist the Joes had to rescue when it was winter out.  The figure just kept coming back into the play mix with me over and over.  I still have my original, though he's beat to hell.

His modern counterparts have been sketchy...  I liked the Taun Taun figure a bit, but obviously it lacks articulation.  The POTF2 carded figure sorta sucked major.  The Saga figure(s) both sucked, but the blue jacket a little more than the brown obviously.

I was ecstatic to see a new one then in the TVSC...  though he can be improved!  What can't, right?  I could totally see Hasbro doing softgoods and a separate holster for this figure now though.  I could see him getting upgraded articulation for Taun-Taun-ing as well.  Some ball-jointed hips, softgoods "skirt", and I'd be pretty ecstatic with it so long as you got both headsculpts (hood up and down).

One cool thing the Saga figure had that the newer ones do not, was a better blaster.  That DL44 just looked a lot snazzier than the ones they have with all Han figures now.  I don't know why, but I just liked it a lot more.

Now, I'm taking a stroll down BHC memory lane here...  BRB.

OK...  Wow.

So here's some thoughts...

-I still laugh at all the people who complained about the people complaining on the toy.  What the hell is a toy forum about, if it's not to sit there critiquing the toys that come out?  Everyone wanted sunshine and giddy children blown out of their asses about that Hoth Han figure, and you know what?  It still sucked a big fat weiner.

That figure had a goofy wide stance, goofy action feature tumor on his ass, and was originally the wrong color...  That was a bad figure.  Was it sculpted ok?  Sure.  Was it better sculpted than the original?  Sure.  And it came with a cool mask feature, and a cool working holster.  It had good points, but for me the bad far outweighed it, and that figure still sucks.  I have my POTF2 Han riding the Taun-Taun to this day, till Hasbro updates the VTSC figure to do that.

-Rob was a real dick. :)  :-*

-JoshEEE had some seriously passive-aggressive **** going on.

-GNT was actually on our side, till he seemed to lose something in the translation with Scott and I...

-I was actually the first person to suggest Hasbro do both versions of Hoth Han's coat, and now I wonder if that actually played a part in them doing both coats?  That's really neat.  :D

-That thread was epic at 7 pages, and it was among collectors that largely aren't there at all now.

-It's the only known thread to actually get Hasbro's attention enough to make an ad for it.

-Han's coat is so clearly brown, it's not even funny now looking back at how wrong people were.

-I see one guy tried arguing it was brown at a costume fitting, but would not provide any visual proof of how he knew this, or where he had seen this.  Yet he still would directly address Scott with his info, as to why Scott was wrong.

-That thread actually spawned a number of side arguments between myself and others.

-Dressel was all about defending that brown coat too.

-I miss Dax.

-Our own Paul Mundheim wanted Blue!  You bastard!

-And yes, that figure still sucks.  Thank god Hasbro actually listened to complaints, and the line's steadily improved since the dark times.  Those years were some of the worst IMO, as far as what was coming out goes.

And I petitioned Steve Sansweet on the StarWars.com message board to go to the archives and bring that damned coat to Celebration 3. Ah, memories. (http://forums.starwars.com/thread.jspa?threadID=110738&start=0)

Oh man, this has been a trip in the way back machine I could've probably done without.

I knew I liked Dressel Rebel for a (good) reason though, and that thread renewed that faith I had in him.  DR, wherever you're at, thanks.

A big "go f yourselves" post from JediMAC too.  And some D. Martin spewing to "quit the hobby if you're so unhappy", as well...  That thread had it all.

I like that 7 pages was an epic rant too.  That's a baby by the standards these days.

BTW, this was always more my Uncle Jesse style...

Though, I did rock an outstanding Mullet every bit as impressive as Mr. Stamos' above.

I suppose that's a matter of opinion.  :-\

Its so funny that people had a problem with this.  I remember even watching Empire in the theater in 97 thinking the Jacket was blue.  Of course the figure had something to do with it, but honestly, in the whited out series of Hoth outdoor shots, it ALWAYS looked blue to me (ok maybe not Hoth Han figure blue, but a dark blue - that was probably our eyes adjusting to our retinas burning out in the dark theater).  Even inside, I just took the darkened "brown" to be the shadows playing off of things.
I was at C4.  I know its a brown jacket.  But even watching it today, I always see it as Blue (especially in those outdoor shots - and knowing that his bespin jacket is blue as well).  Besides screen accuracy, I never saw the point in everyone arguing about it.
ANYWAY...
I never had hoth Han (funny, since the only Luke I had was Hoth Luke), but my friends did, and I loved using him to cut open the Tauntaun belly and save Luke from the Wampa.

The arguing, at least to me anyway, seemed to take on a life of people with proof and those without, but who would vehemently argue it was blue (to the point of making **** up) because for them it was nostalgic.

Now, I got the nostalgia argument...  "My toy was blue in 1981, and I want a blue one now!"

That to me, actually makes sense.  That's valid...  That's preferences and opinions being bantied about between collectors.  To me no different than a guy who wants figures carded, and Hasbro to go the extra mile to make sure figure cards are minty mint, as opposed to the loose collector that sees the package as merely a short-term obstacle to happiness.

The "argument" seemed to be a lot of Scott posting a bunch of images of the figure in a brown coat, definitively, and a bunch of guys showing nothing as definitive and making stuff up even (I still can't believe a guy kept arguing it was only brown for a costume fitting...  dont' ask him how he knows, he can't show you images, but he's sure he knew this).  :)

Arguing about WHY you want it one color or the other seemed to really go by the wayside to some degree...  Guys would say they'd want blue because the vintage was blue, but nobody seemed to pay attention to them saying that.  *shrugs*   :-\  I was wrapped up in a separate argument about the figure itself simply sucking.  Which it did.

One of my favorite figures, both vintage and modern.  The whole coat debate brought back a lot of memories as well.  To be honest, I always thought it was blue as well - primarily due to the vintage toy - but it does seem fairly obvious now that it was/is brown.  I am sort of glad that Hasbro keeps releasing it both ways, as I like having the "movie accurate" one, as well as the modern equivalent of the vintage toy.  I'm pretty happy with the versions we have already (hood up and hood down), although I wouldn't mind a slight tweak here or there so it could ride a Taun Taun (and maybe be included in a pack with an all-new Taun Taun as well ;))
