Italy looked terrible today. At least it wasn't their age that caused the tie. Makes me feel slightly better but they need to step it up several times.

How is all the "obvious" games turn out not to be obvious.  France ties Uruguay, they are losing to Mexico, Spain loses, actually the only countries that have pretty much played as expected have been Brazil and Germany....  Well, at least my prediction about being uniquely wrong, was right...

The ref in the Germany Serbia match is out of control.

4 yellows and and a red I in the first half.

I am sure i am going to get a yellow for just writing this. He is turning  soccer into the NBA.

Uck.  Leave it to the US to let Slovenia score first.  And then, just when the US was starting to look good in the latter part of the first half they give up that second goal.  So much for my hopes of the US getting out of the group at 2-0-1.

***EDIT - Perhaps I spoke too soon.  Amazing goal by Landon Donovan!

Leave it up to a ref to completely **** the US out of the win.

Unreal.  >:(

WTF!?!?!?!  Some of the US players asked the ref about the foul on Maurice Edu's disallowed goal.  The ref would not tell them what it was.  Meanwhile, some of the US players were being blatantly held in the box.

Oh, and this was this particular ref's FIRST ever World Cup match.  ::)

So the Score today is Refs 2 - Teams/Players/Fans  0..........

Let's hope the match is decided on the pitch by the players in the next one.

Yeah, right on.  Refs should immediately start with their SECOND ever World Cup match.   :-*

I don't care that it was this ref's first match.  That's not my chief concern here.  However I DO care that he made a monumentally bad call on what just happened to be his first World Cup match.

Taking the piss because Canada didn't make the tournament, Brent?   :-*

Not taking the piss, I couldn't even tell you the last time Canada qualified for the World Cup because I'm not a fan of football.  Just pointing out an asinine statement.  Everyone has a first World Cup match. ::)

But I did get the reaction I wanted, so thanks.   :)

Not willing to take into account the almost universal outrage over such a terrible call, eh?  Almost every report I've seen on that match has had people completely baffled over Koman Coulibaly's call.  He would not explain the foul to the American players that led to the disallowed goal.  And a lot of observers think that he won't include an explanation in his post match report.  And what's worse, most of the American players in the box were being held by Slovenian players, but the ref calls a foul on the Americans?  That alone is cause for Koman Coulibaly's credibility and experience as a referee on the World Cup level to be called into question.

Sigh.

For a brief, illuminating moment put aside your stubborn bullheaddedness and think about what I commented on.

As for the universal outrage, you're sounding downright Republican on this one.  Here's a subtle hint: the U.S. isn't the center of the universe.  So no, I'm not ignoring the outrage but neither is it universal.

The outrage I would think is justified; it's a dubious call.  I would suggest your bias is readily apparent in saying that "most of the American players in the box were being held".  Yes, certainly some of them were but if you bother to look objectively, you'll see some American fouls going on as well.  As many?  Probably not, but hardly entirely one sided.

All that said you continue to miss my point: every ref has a first game at every single level.  Refs miss calls.  Your reaction and comment on it being his first game is what I went after.  He's human and indeed may have blown it.  Wah.  You're being an ass about it being his first game.  We had a parent thrown out of a 10 year old girls game today for berating the ref from the sideline.  He immediately made me think of your comment.  Ref's miss.  Deal with it.

I'm not the type to usually say things are fixed... but this guy, missing that call, in that situation... makes me wonder...

Ugh.  I've seen serious questions in English papers that were wondering what in the world elicited that call.  Where is the English press's vested interest in the U.S. doing well?  Especially since a good number of international soccer observers thought that England could win the tournament?

And we're not talking about a kid's soccer match.  There are rules at those games regarding the officials because parents don't know how to behave in front of children and some of them will get out of control.  How does that compare with the World Cup, and the pisspoor performance of a referee?  And mind you the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world.  And this was a call that could potentially shape the outcome of the tournament since points are awarded both for goals scored as well as wins.  That call directly impacted the standings of group C.

The ref made piss poor calls the entire match...the disallowed goal was just the height of his crappy officiating.

The red card situation in some of the matches has been pretty astounding.  There was a red card in the first half of Chile - Switzerland that probably should have been a yellow.  And the red card in Germany - Serbia?  That had people calling for blood.

Absolutely amazing!!!!  Landon Donovan cements his legacy in US Soccer lore with that rebound goal in stoppage time.

Clint Dempsey's disallowed goal?  Shocking, especially considering what happened in US v Slovenia.  He was clearly on side from all of the replays, but the linesman called him offside.  It's all academic now though, since the US wins Group C.  The first time the US has won their group since 1930.  The likely opponent in the group of 16 will be the runner up in group D.  Right now that looks like it may be Serbia.

Definitely shocked to see Brazil go out this early in the tournament.   Little Brazil in Manhattan was quiet as can be today.  But overall the Netherlands has been really strong in this World Cup.

Glad to see Ghana got eliminated after they beat the U.S.  The fact that Ghana couldn't make that penalty kick after the hand ball absolutely cost them the match.  And then the match ending penalty kicks were crazy.  And that winning one?  It basically fluttered in.

But what I really want to see?  Argentina - Germany!  Especially after Diego Maradona talked so much trash to the Germans.

I'm not really a soccer fan, but I enjoy watching sports in HD from time to time just for the hell of it.  What's with those stupid horns?  Very annoying IMO.

OMG!!!  I don't know if Maradona can ever go home to Argentina after the way Germany just took the Argentine defense apart.

And then Spain - Paraguay this afternoon?  Wow.  I've never seen that many penalty kicks that close together in regulation time.  And then to have one PK goal being disallowed, and then two getting blocked?  Amazing soccer today.

And from what I've been reading the American TV ratings for this World Cup have been 40% higher than they were in 2006.  Good news for the world's most popular sport in the United States.

Yeah, because only 19.4 million people watched the U.S. team play Ghana (http://www.freep.com/article/20100629/SPORTS18/6290378/1066/SPORTS18/U.S.-soccer-team-missed-opportunity-to-KO-coach?-).  And 14 million watched the U.S. play against England.  To put that in perspective, it's on par or better than NFL prime time regular season games.

;D

And 140 watched any other match in the whole freaking tournament.  Most of them PVR'd the highlights.  ::)  It means they watched the home side because they're patriotic, they don't give a rat's fart about soccer.

BTW, did fox light up the ball so it was easier for U.S. fans to watch?   :-*

Ooh, ya got me Nick.  Broadcast in Spanish, the first language of the United States of America.  Yeah, Americans love that soccer stuff.

9.3 million Mexican's and Cuban's that are stateside does not equate to America loving soccer.  But you can keep telling yourself whatever you like.  M'kay?  ::)

When the spanish language broadcast of the World Cup in the U.S. rates better than the Stanley Cup finals (featuring 2 American teams), it seems to be a significant story.

Whooo hooo!  I finished in second.  I think I was in 6th at the start of, and part way through, the knock out stage.

I thought the Spain-Netherlands game was pretty good.  Though I was shocked by how many chances each team threw away (either by dribbling too much, flubbing shots, etc.).  I'm glad Spain won, they seemed to create more chances on their own.  As for the Dutch, boy they seem to play a style that is hard to like.  The seemed to flop an inordinate number of times, committed more than a couple aggregious fouls (De Jong's kick to the chest?), and seemed to lack a level of chemistry, particularly on defense (lots of finger pointing...).

If you actually believe your point to be relevant then you really don't understand how minor a sport the NHL is in the U.S. south of 40o latitude.  Canada is the country where hockey is popular.

Brent - how popular is American football in Canada?

Bigger than Canadian football maybe, but not nearly as popular as hockey.  The average audience for the Olympic hockey final was 16.6 million people (out of about 35M) with upwards of 80% of Canadians catching at least part of the game, or so the stats say.
