Title: New Packaging for 3D Re-Releases
Post by: Jeff on February 25, 2011, 01:17 PM
We all know that the Vintage look will continue into early Spring 2012, but how about Summer 2012 for the TPM 3D release?  Why, it's a brand new look!  Nothing like getting a sneak peek at the packaging we'll be seeing 12+ months from now. :P

Check it out from StarWars.com (http://starwars.com/vault/collecting/2012_star_wars_line_look/index.html):

"2012 ushers in a return to the beginning of the Star Wars saga with Episode I in theaters. It seems only fitting, then, that the iconic Phantom Menace Sith Lord should land himself on product packaging spanning the entire Star Wars saga."

Meh...I don't really care for it.  Nice throwback to Ep I though when that hits theatres again.  Maul sure does look pissed though.

Just reading through that article at the Official Site, and it mentions this line look should start appearing on shelves "early next year".  I thought they mentioned at Toy Fair that the vintage line would continue "through 2012", so I figured lasting the entire year, or at least until Fall.  I wonder if that is not exactly the case, or I'm just reading it incorrectly.  I guess the new packaging is fine, but almost anything is going to pale to me next to the vintage packaging.  If nothing else, at least we'll get a good two years out of it, hopefully it will continue longer though.  If this starts off right away next year, they're missing a great chance to put out an ultimate Darth Maul on a vintage card though - I'm sure many people would like that.

It's sharp looking and the card looks to be sturdy without too many annoying corners to get dinged and bother the carded folk.  I think they did a good job with respect to the general design, especially pulling in Maul as an icon on the cardback.

As for spanning the entire Star Wars saga, um, I'm not so keen.  Maul didn't span the whole saga; hell, he didn't even make it through a whole movie.  I liked the Darth Maul character too and understand the popularity.  I also understand that Obi is too boring even though he spanned most of the saga.  Stormtrooper?  Nope, too many different early iterations.  Really the only thing you could practically go with is Vader, which I assume is 'tired'.

I'm sure my general dislike for many aspects of the PT is coloring my views but I must say I find the notion of Maul as representative of the 'whole saga' to be humorous.  Didn't Greedo have just about as much screen time?  Ok, maybe not him but surely Jabba did, especially after the SEs came out.  Get the fat blob on a card.   ;)

Just reading through that article at the Official Site, and it mentions this line look should start appearing on shelves "early next year".

Yeah, that's just the look in general though and not necessarily when Hasbro will go all in on this look.  For example, LEGO debuted the current "Dark Sky" blue packaging look on their stuff in Spring, but it took Hasbro until the Summer/Fall to debut it.  It could be that LEGO or puzzle makers or whoever else will start cranking out TPM stuff with that look first and Hasbro will get to it later.  Or not... who knows?

I thought they mentioned at Toy Fair that the vintage line would continue "through 2012", so I figured lasting the entire year, or at least until Fall.

At TF, they were coy about how far into 2012 the Vintage stuff would go.  I'm sure we'll see some stuff in Spring 2012, but I don't think they had fully settled yet what they were going to do for Fall 2012.

I mean, for all we know, maybe the plan is to move the Legends line to the Vintage cardback?  Those would continue the Vintage look with repacks and greatest hits, while the new movie figures get the Maul card design?  Or maybe they decide to dump the Legends line and split the movie line - use the Maul card design for the TPM movie stuff and then continue to do the OT thing on the Vintage card alongside the movie stuff?

Until Hasbro offers up their comments/plans for LFL's new Maul card design, it's just a guessing game on how/when they are handling the switch...

I think it'll be the same set up as we've had for a while. Vintage. Legends. Clone Wars. Clone Wars and non-vintage packaging stuff will all sport the "Maul look" just like the blue/red packaging with clones from 2008-2009 and blue/black "SOTDS" packaging with Rex for 2010-2011.

That looks like an awful lot of plastic, I wonder if it will be trimmed down for production.

That motif is going to look kind of silly for the Clone Wars line though, IMHO. (Oppress arc or not)

You have to imagine too what the focus is for the year...  Clone Wars will be taking a backseat to the theatrical release.  The line's look will lean more on what's being pushed the most by Lucasfilm more than anything.

Clone Wars will ultimately sort of fall secondary then, I'd imagine.

I don't mind the card...  It looks like maybe bigger/cooler accessories could return.  I like that, if it happens.

Ha! If only I had the resources to make a mock Jabba Collection card.

I dislike any character-theme packaging. Not even Vader makes it look good.

I bet vintage packaging ends by early next year. It's been a "treat" for fans, but I suspect the suits really want  a more unified brand look.

They should have went with Sio-Bibble instead of Darth Maul. He represents EP1 so much better...

This reminds me of the old Ep1 cards just the blue and Maul's red face done seem to work for me. A black card with Maul's face would be better. At least the case is large again.

How about a greenish card with Boba's mug on it?

I think it is for legends, and CW.  it is ok, I believe Maul is going to be in CW in the fall/next year, they hint that in the last part Savage Opress series and the re-release of TPM. makes sense to use Maul in the package

Yeah, I don't mind the look for what it is (just not a spiffy as vintage).  Like Jeff and others mentioned, hard to say what Hasbro's lineup will be for sure regarding this - or what time it rolls out.  That being said, I could see them switching the "line look" up for each year with there being a new 3D release from 2012 to 2017 - pick a different "icon" representative for that year's movie to be the centerpiece of the line look.

My fav package design was the Thirtieth Anniversary Collection aka TAC. I liked the die cuts and strong visual look they used.

I was thinking the same thing, but forgot to comment on my original post.  Maybe they'll try and compensate for the higher price?  Ya probably not...Might just be more room for those AWESOME BATTLE CARDS!

Stupid going back to artwork instead of photos. I blame the upcoming vintage collection EU figures for this.

(I'm kidding...I read the post at rabbleskum).

I've seen quite a bit of panic regarding this packaging replacing the Vintage branding and I'm starting to understand why.

I've been to three different message boards and even though this new look will reportedly have zero impact on the beloved Vintage line, discussions are taking place in the Vintage forums rather than the Clone Wars or Saga Legends forums. It's pretty misleading.

Anyway, for anyone who thinks this packaging is early, it's actually later than usual. The 2010 look was officially revealed on StarWars.com in mid-January. (http://www.starwars.com/vault/collecting/news20100113.html) The on-shelf date has typically been late-July/early-August but since LFL is pushing the 3-D release of Episode I, the on-shlef date has been bumped to January 2012. Makes perfect sense.

As for the look, I'm fine with it. Maul was a very overexposed character back in 1999 and 2000 and I certainly had my fill of him then but I can't think of a better character to represent The Phantom Menace.

I personally think the look is colorful and fresh, and, come on, really, Maul may have had so little screen time, but it's very clear that he's the face of TPM, and maybe Hasbro will exit out of this artwork phase once the re-release is out of theaters.

I wouldn't mind at all seeing this look transfer over to the realistic figure line after TVC is done. I wonder if they'll use a character from AOTC once AOTC makes it in theaters again.

I've been reading some of the posts on those otheR Sites as well and they are freaking hilarious. Some people are ready to slash their wrists over this news it seems. "I'm done with collecting!"  :D

I just saw the other photo mock-up for what I assume is either a BP box or mid-size vehicle package. Kind of odd looking with the clear window. I'm not losing any sleep over this news though.

LOL!

Hmmm.  2012 packaging?  TPM coming out in 3-D in May 2012?  Darth Maul on the packaging?  It certainly makes sense to me.

I donīt think Maul deserves too much predominance on the collection, besides there are few variants of this character
his card portrait is only justified on ep1 releases, but I insist, he is not a character to epitomize the whole saga, rather portrait Yoda, whatever version of him, or classic Obi Wan.

Itīs good to read the vintage line will continue with the same packaging, only varying the photo of the correspondent character.

There is a scenario that everyone is overlooking...

Hasbro said that the Vintage line will be continuing through at least 2012.

They didn't specifically say that Ep1 figures coming out in 2012 would be on Vintage cards. They just indicated that the delayed Ep1 wave would be coming out in 2012.

What could be happening is that those Ep1 figures are coming out in this style packaging and any new realistic figures coming out from EP2 - EP6 will remain on Vintage style cardbacks.

In 2013 when they re-release EP2, any characters from AOTC will be released on an AOTC themed cardback and figures from EP1; EP3-EP6 will be on Vintage cards. etc....

So each year an episode is released, it is excluded from the Vintage line and a dedicated sub-line to that movie that's two or three waves worth of figures is released that year in support of the re-release.

That would make the most sense to me. Would I be disappointed? Sure, I was really hoping to see any and all future realistic figures continue to be issued on Vintage style cardbacks, but I know that actually happening was very un-realistic (no pun intended)

I'd be let down if we don't see TPM figures on vintage cards this year or next.  If vintage is continuing through 2012, you'd have to think we will.  It would be silly not to attach every product segment to the movie release.

You got it wrong. Hasbro doesn't just mean that packaging is for 2012, $20.12 is also the MSRP. (TRU will charge $21.99)  :P

Oh yeah, huh... and on top of that, Hasbro doesn't do the movie-themed waves anymore in TVC. I think you're right that the TPM wave will be released in it's entirety on the new Maul packaging, and then the transition will go back to TVC.

OR, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen, the TVC wave released before the delayed TPM wave could be the very last wave of TVC, and we'll start seeing realistic figures on this new packaging, being that TVC is set to end in 2012.

Maul just grabs your attention.  It's a good design approach to go with him IMO.  The only stuff I keep carded nowadays is vintage unless it's truly something unique or a bit rare like say Sandtrooper on the Freeze Frame cardback but that was over a decade ago.

Hmmmm...I don't know about this.  I can't imagine these Maul cards, plus TVC, plus Clone Wars all at once.  I think TVC will take a break.  Personally, as long as I get some ANH stuff (RFT, Ezavan) on Vinatge cards I'll be satisfied.

Comercially, it would make sense to have Maul on everything for a year, then Jango with AOTC, then Grevious with ROTS, then Vader with ANH, then Yoda for ESB, and finally...hmmm who should be on the ROTJ card?  My vote is for Droopy McCool, but Jabba would be fine.

Time for a bump...

Our pals over at Yakface are once again reporting that Yoda will be the key to the 2013 Packaging.  Sure makes sense and flows nicely from Maul in 2012.

When the Maul stuff broke last year at this time, there was some concerns about the Vintage Line, but we all know the Vintage stuck around and Maul was only for Movie Heroes and Clone Wars.  I can see Yoda being used for Movie Heroes and Clone Wars...  but will Vintage be around in 2013 or will the 2013 "realistic" line use the Yoda look too?   :-X

Also, I can't remember where we were speculating on this before, so I'll re-start the talk here too-

2012/TPM = Maul
2013/AOTC = Yoda

Your guesses for the rest?
2014/ROTS = ?
2015/ANH = ?
2016/ESB = ?
2017/ROTJ = ?

You have to figure that Vader and/or Anakin will end up on there for ROTS... probably get Fett for ESB. Maybe a Stormtrooper for ANH?  Or Vader for ANH if they use Anakin for ROTS?

I'm just starting to warm up to the Maul packaging. I can't really say that Yoda is too representative of AOTC, but it's whatever at this point, I guess. All said and done.

Here's my take on what's coming next...

ROTS - "Sith eyes" hooded Anakin
ANH - Darth Vader
ESB - Boba Fett
ROTJ - Jedi Luke
Title: Re: New Packaging for 3D Re-Releases
Post by: Jesse James on February 16, 2012, 12:22 AM
ROTS: Vader
ANH: R2-D2/3PO (both or R2...  I don't think 3PO would get it himself but R2 might)
ESB: Fett
ROTJ: Jedi Luke or Palpatine

ROTS: Sidious
ANH: Vader
ESB: Fett
ROTJ: Luke

I've been curious if they would continue this pattern for the other releases as well, I sort of hope they do.  I've been tempted to pick up a carded Maul just to have a "set" of each of the featured characters on those cardbacks when all is said and done, but we'll see.  It is tough to pay $8 or $9 for those cruddy Maul figures :).

I like the thoughts posted here on future possibilities, if I had to guess:

ROTS - Anakin
ANH - R2 or Vader
ESB - Fett
ROTJ - Luke

Honestly, it would be nice to see some new characters on the cardbacks (like Luke, he doesn't seem to get his due much with the cardbacks, same for R2).
