Title: Mattel Batman
Post by: Scott on July 30, 2003, 03:48 PM
Another impulse buy today was the latest Mattel Batman (The Zipline version)

What a great figure this is, sculpted by the Four Horseman (Same guys who do MOTU) it looks like the Batman people have wanted forever.  Looking at what else is in the line though makes me cringe...

A line I probably won't collect but a figure I couldn't pass up!

Funny, I was thinking the same thing when I recently saw some pics online of the Zipline Batman, its not a figure line I want to get into, but I thought about picking this particular one up, just because it is so well done.  Plus, I always had a Batman fig when I was a kid.

the line will seemingly hav a lot of bad guys, so i'm happy about that.

and we'll be getting a batgirl sometime next tot he robin we already got, oh  and a nightwing.

I also found Joker last night and couldn't refuse.  The Four Horseman just rule in their sculpting.  So...I will probably buy a Robin as well and be done with it  :-*

I picked up the Batman Nightwing 2 pack the other day. It's pretty cool. The Superman Batman 2 pack looks good too.

I hate to consistently say this, but Canada sucks for toys.  If I get to see these, it will probably be in October.  That's if they come here.

I'll be in Cincinnati then too, so I'll probably find some stuff, but the first waves are likely to be gone.  And it's nice seeing pics, but I can never really tell if I want something by the pics.  I like to have the sense of scale and see how the paint it and all that sort of stuff.  Droid Factory R2 is my case in point.  I really liked the pictures, but once I had him in my hands, the paint was dull, it didn't look quite "right".  I don't even really want to keep this guy.

Sigh.  Such is the life of being a toy collector in the wrong country.  Thanks for letting me whine.

And a Batcycle with a dedicated figure! Yippee!

Mattel has actually found a way to fit more Suck into this toy line than Hasbro. There is exactly ONE Batman figure worth getting. Nothing against the Four Horsemen of course, they're just guns for hire. They do a great job of polishing a turd. It's Mattel's lame concepts that need to be scrapped.

This line needs diversity. Batman has a rich history of costumes and characters. USE IT. Make two or three AUTHENTIC Batman figures with oodles of articulation and instead of retiring them in six months, reissue them in new assortments with other characters.

Gimme a modern Batman figure with characters from "Hush" like Catwoman and Huntress. Gimme a Frank Miller Batman with a Carrie Kelly Robin and Mutant Leader. Heck, gimme a Batman Returns Batman with a movie accurate Penguin and Catwoman.

Are good ideas so hard to come up with at the Mattel offices? Are their heads so deeply entrenched between Barbie's™ perfect butt cheeks that they can't possibly watch a TV or read a comic? (Or visit the DC message boards?)

What pisses me off is that I've found these at three different stores, and have yet to find a Zipline Batman. I don't hold much hope of finding a Joker (or any villain for that matter) so I'm not to worried about this line. I just wish they could pull their heads out of their collective a$$es there at Mattel and just distribute the products evenly. But, if they did that, places like he-man.org would actually be a pleasure to visit.

OK, that was my rant for the day.

Amazingly, not so long after my whining ::)  this stuff showed up in force too (see LOTR minis).

I ordered the Batman/Superman two pack, Zipline Batman and Robin fig online and a few days later I find everything.

I scored two Robins last night, so if anyone wants one, LMK.  Today I found a Joker and it appears we have a card bender about.  Pretty funny really, but it's cool by me because I'll be opening it.  I've been finding Zipline Batmans pretty regularly over the past couple of days, so if you need one of those, LMK.

On another DC line note, on the extreme outside chance you need the Justice League Flash or Wonderwoman, I have those for trade too.

How tall is the Batman figure? Is it 7"?

The Hush Batman figures look really cool too. The Poison Ivy and Joker in particular. I'm still hoping for a really cool Catwoman figure....Grrrrr.....  8)

The Batman I got in Chicago is the same scale as the new versions that Mattel has just put out.  Think of the zipline Batman, but in the classic gray and blue outfit.
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Morgbug on August 19, 2003, 12:50 AM
I believe it's classified as a six inch figure yes?  I only got it after a friend showed me pics that indicated it wasn't grossly out of scale with Marvel Legends.  I'm much more of a Marvel fan, but Batman, Supes from this line and the Joker and Robin were all appealing.

They basically have to do a Catwoman figure, don't they ;)

Yeah, Mr Freeze is one per case.

The asortment apparently goes like this:
5x Ice Armor Batman
5x That Silly Orange Colored Batman
1x Zipline Batman
1x Mr Freeze

Retarded. Absolutely retarded.
This line'll probably die a long drawn-out death like MOTU as well. Oh well, at least DC Direct is bringing out 'Hush' figures.

Now there's a rumor that Mr. Freeze is left out of every other case in favor of Robin, ala the whole Joker fiasco of the first series. It's a rumor, but I wouldn't put it past Mattel to shove it up the collector's asses like that. ::)

Canada sucks.  Oops, said that before.  Sorry.

Anyway, the Killer Croc wave has finally started showing up (in all it's infinite wisdom, Walmart started putting them out after Christmas ::))  Not that I want much out of this wave, but if it's anything like the previous wave, I should be able to find some spare Killer Croc's and Robin's if anyone needs them.

You need to say so here because I'm tired of picking things up only to return them.  Two Robins, three Jokers and two Hobgoblin's (yeah, different line).

 :)

Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Morgbug on January 8, 2004, 11:54 AM
Specifically the fact that there are so many ridiculous Batman figures and only one of the more 'desirable' figures per case?  I'm still completely unclear on the point of a green Robin figure.  A buddy picked up a Mr. Freeze for me so only need Killer Croc and that's just a matter of time.

This line reminds me of modern MOTU with the case assortments.

Although I'm not a Batman collector, I do really like the character and try to keep up on the movies/cartoons/toys.  I just saw this over at TNI this morning, some pics of the figure line accompanying the new "The Batman" cartoon series.  Check out the new Batcave, that looks like one heck of a playset!  If only Hasbro could do something this big for Star Wars.

You can see the rest of it here, I might be tempted to pick up the Batman at least, kind of a neat look.

Anyone else appreciate the irony that the hardest-to-find figure this Winter is Mister Freeze? This should be HIS season, man.

I actually prefer the look of the standard version over the chase, but I'll pick up either one of I ever find them.

Weird.  There are lots of Mr Freeze chase on ebay, but most are not with comic, a Walmart exclusive.  Shouldn't that make the w/o comic harder to find?  I dunno, I can't follow this line.  I have both versions of Mr. Freeze and see a fair number of Crocs now so I really don't bother following.  I'm a little ticked at the flood of Freeze chase though, I had hoped to trade mine for several SW figs ::)

I don't know if it is the fact of seeing new stuff at Toy Fair, or that I caught a few episodes of Justice League on Cartoon Network lately, but I have been in a "Batman mood" lately.  I used to be a big fan, but kind of got out of comics and that sort of thing awhile back.  I still caught the Justice League cartoon for awhile, because I think it is pretty well done.  Anyways, while out shopping last weekend...and since no Star Wars was to be found, I decided to pick up the Zipline Batman.  It is nice to have a Batman figure on the desk here, and this really is a great figure (even though I am way behind and most of you have had this for months).  I have been debating whether or not to try to collect more of the line (not all the Bat-variants), but it usually doesn't sound like it is too fun to find these (thanks to Mattel).  Any current collectors out there?  What do you think of the line?  I'm interested to see what the new "The Batman" figures and show are going to be like.  I miss watching the Animated Series that used to be on.  Anyways, it is nice reading all of your comments on the line here, thanks!
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Morgbug on February 25, 2004, 04:05 PM
I might be the only one not completely frustrated by the line and still collecting.

Batman was and is my favorite DC character.  That said, Mattel is doing goofy MOTU style things to this line.  A single quasi-chase figure per series (Robin, Joker, Croc, Freeze) can make it frustrating.  Worse, after losing patience and paying too much, the good figures start showing up in two packs.  Robin (red version) has become available in a two pack with a Batman (can't remember whether it's the Zipline or blue version, both of which I have).  So if you still need and want Robin, now you have to buy another Batman figure with it, one you might already have ::)  Joker too is available in a two pack, but with one of those weird, purple deluxe Batman figures.  Blech.

I got the blue Batman with the Superman figure.  I do not like the deluxe or over-accessorized figures, though I am tempted by the white/arctic batman from the freeze wave.  It just looks...different.   :-\

I've had tremendously good luck with this line and I really don't think it's a) going to last b) quite as hard to find stuff, in most cases.  I've returned several Jokers and Robins back to stores because I simply couldn't trade them and would take a loss on ebay.  If I had the patience and held them, I could have probably made it worth my while.  I've got a green Robin in the trunk of my car that is likely destined for a return at Walmart any day now.  I've left at least three Killer Croc's on the pegs as well.  I've only ever seen one Freeze though and it was the chase version.  My regular version I got from a Canadian buddy out west.  But the Freeze wave is very uncommon here thus far, so I'm fairly  (over) confident I'll find more.

Probably my biggest disappointment with the line is that there aren't enough villains and those that do appear are not the ones I had been hoping for.  Mostly because I'm more a fan of the comics than the movies or animated series I suppose.  Killer Croc and Freeze are fine, but I was hoping for the classics.  Two-face, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Bane, Scarecrow, etc.

I just don't expect the line to last long enough to produce all of those figures.  I would dearly love to have a well done catwoman figure, but I suppose time will tell.   :-X
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Brian on February 25, 2004, 04:11 PM
I agree with you Morgbug, I'd like to see a Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, and Two-face as well.  Also, is there a site out there that has pics of all the figures released in this current Mattel line?  I remember checking them out in the visual guides at OfftheCard.com, but that site is gone now.  Just curious.

I'm wondering too if this line is going to last, especially once the new "The Batman" animated line comes out in the fall (ish) time.  I'm not sure if I'm going to buy more figures or not, but I'd like to.  I feel bad, because once I tell my wife I am for sure just focusing on Star Wars from now on...I get the urge to collect something else (smaller).  I have never been big on variants, so I'll probably just see what is out there for regular, different figure versions and go from there.

Thanks for the info Morgbug!
Title: DC Direct Batman, too!
Post by: MisterPL on February 25, 2004, 04:30 PM
If Mattel follows the current formula, you can expect a new villain maybe twice a year packed one per case with a platoon of similarly themed Bat-variants. Zipline Batman - the most comic accurate version so far - keeps finding its way back into assortments, but I suspect after seeing "Freeze" and "Croc" themed Batman figures, we can expect "Riddler" and "Two-Face" versions, too.

If you want comic accurate figures, check out DC Direct (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/action/actionlist.html)'s line. They're twice the price, but no one else is going to offer a Penguin (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/action/actiondisplay.html?itemCode=csacatpenact&itemType=action) figure with a cigarette or a Bob Kane Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/featured/featureddisplay.html?itemCode=fabatman&itemType=action) from his first appearance. That and you can pre-order them from your local comic shop guy without worrying about shortpacking.

Very nice sculpts and generally better articulation than Mattel's line. Here are some more:

The Dark Knight Returns Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/featured/featureddisplay.html?itemCode=darkknightbatman&itemType=action)
Hush Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/featured/featureddisplay.html?itemCode=hushbatman&itemType=action)
Kingdom Come Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/action/actiondisplay.html?itemCode=KCBatmanact&itemType=action)
Just-Us League Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/action/actiondisplay.html?itemCode=alfredbatact&itemType=action)
Silver Age Batman (http://www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/catalog/action/actiondisplay.html?itemCode=BatmanRobinact&itemType=action)

Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Morgbug on February 25, 2004, 04:42 PM
Oh yeah, DC Direct is infinitely better, no doubt.  I just wanted a cheap line that could approximately fit in with the Marvel Legends stuff.  This line does that, but your comments regarding the current formula are bang on.  For me, these individual figures are actually cheaper than Star Wars figures, so a bonus.  The formula is annoying, but frugal, so I take that as a positive, as someone that collects way too many stupid toys.

Zipline is a great Batman and the one to own, from this line.  I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see it being continued on the various cards.  It actually seems like a smart move, unless one was trying to sell the original on ebay :P

I have yet to find Croc, and I only found Freeze at KB before it closed.

Wal-Mart is supposed to have endcaps full of these, but that has yet to happen here and I doubt it ever will.

I'd like to see the Four Horsemen sculpt a Two-Face, but after reading what Mattel has in store for this line in 2004, this line will be dead and buried before that happens. >:(
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Brian on February 26, 2004, 10:22 AM
Yeah, I was wondering that too...what exactly is in store for this line in 2004?  Obviously Mattel has problems with case ratios, etc., and there seems to be more than enough different "bat-variants".  Is the line continuing at all, or is it done as soon as "The Batman" starts, sometime in the fall?

I have looked at some of the DC Direct stuff, and that stuff is really nice too.  Since I haven't had comics for quite some time, I don't really go in comic shops anymore...but their line of stuff really looks great too.  I'm kind of in line with Morgbug though, I was looking for a nicely done, cheaper line to collect.  I'd just like to have a small, nice looking Batman collection to have......and now that consists of Zipline Batman :P.  I guess I'll wait and see where this line is headed before I jump in, or just wait for the next line if it is done well.  I will admit, I do kind of like the look of the new Batman (from "The Batman"), so we will see.

What other non-Bat figures are in the 6" Mattel line?  There is a Robin, Freeze, Killer Croc, Joker, Superman, and Nightwing?  I wasn't sure, I haven't followed the line close enough, but I was just curious.  Thanks for all the help and advice everyone.

I've been really tempted to pick up a set of Super Friends figures my real love of DC stems from there and really there only, never got into their comics at all.  The other thing that does intrigue me is the JLA line, comic adaptations of the Super Friends which would fit in with Marvel Legends, I'm tempted but so far have waited ;)
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Brian on February 26, 2004, 10:54 AM
That's a lot of what tempted me as well Scott.  The only DC comic I ever read growing up was Batman (or anything related to Batman), I was mainly a Marvel kid otherwise.  However, Bats is probably my favorite overall.  I really enjoyed watching the Super Friends growing up, and actually am somewhat interested in the newer Justice League show as well.  I have considered both the Super Friends and JLA lines from DC Direct because of that.  Also, sorry...one other question...have any of you been collecting the current Justice League line from Mattel?  I know it is riddled with variants as well, but what do you think of the regular figures if you have any of them?  I've been tempted a couple of times to get at least the "team".
Title: Mattel Justice League
Post by: MisterPL on February 26, 2004, 11:56 AM
I have "the team" all standing on their respective bases in my office. They're like poseable maquettes more than action figures, but they're very authentic, right down to the subtle differences in height.

I also picked up the Batman and Superman figures with added articulation. They're not too bad, but neither figure has pegholes in their feet which strikes me as pretty odd for a contemporary toy. I should have passed.

As with other superhero lines, I'm only collecting the screen- or comic-accurate versions, so it's not a huge strain on my wallet. But I refuse to pay full price even for an authentic figure that's part of a 2-pack including a weird variant. Those days are over.

Just thinking about the Mattel Batman line again today, have any of you heard any news if this line is even continuing beyond the current releases?  I don't think anything was shown at Toy Fair (besides the animated "The Batman" line), and I personally haven't heard of anything more either.  Its a shame, I really do like that Zipline Batman...too bad he doesn't have anyone to fight :P.  I wish it wasn't so difficult to have a Batman line with versions of Batman, the Joker, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Two Face, Clayface, Alfred, Robin, etc.  Hopefully the next Batman line will do a little better...eventually.
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Morgbug on March 11, 2004, 04:56 PM
Well, made a decision.  I'm bailing out on this line.  Though I've been able to keep up with what I want pretty easily, with a clouded future and an odd assortment coming (if it is), I'm out.  A buddy locally needs the Killer Croc and Mr. Freeze, both of which I am not that attached to, so off I go.

My daughter has the blue Batman to play with and I have Superman, Joker, red Robin and zipline Batman, so I'm good. If anyone needs anything but the zipline Bats, they're welcome to it.

The line is just too slow in coming, too boring in terms of too many Batman figures and a limited future.   :-\
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Brian on March 12, 2004, 11:32 AM
I think I'm actually kind of leaning the same way Morgbug, although I never really got into this line (same with MOTU, a theme with Mattel-handled lines maybe?).  I got the Zipline Bats, and I thought that figure was so outstanding...and I looked into what else was out there.  I've always been a Batman fan, and thought it might be a nice "small" collection to have.  Then after I saw what was out there, the line's problems, and the possibility that it might almost be over...I kind of reconsidered.  I'm thinking about holding out to see what the next animated line has to offer.  I like these comic versions, but I just don't know if the line will last too much longer from the sounds of it.  And, seeing a collector of the line such as yourself give up on it says a lot to me to that maybe it isn't worth it to try to get into.  I'm happy with my Zipline Bats for now :).

Anyone actively collecting anything Bats-related right now?  I really haven't been, although I have considered it from time to time.  Since I'm trying to actually "cut back" on figure purchases, I'm doing my best to stay away.  Anyone picking up the new animated series figures?  I have seen them around on toy runs, although I haven't really looked too closely at them.  The Batmobile they have out doesn't look too bad though, and we almost picked it up for our nephews, looks like it would be fun.  I actually happened to catch the new "The Batman" animated series last Saturday, and it wasn't too bad.  It was definitely no "Batman: The Animated Series", but I guess it was nice to see Bats have his own show on Saturday mornings again.  Plus, I'd rather kiddos watch something like this than Poke-Yu-Gi-Duel Masters Supremo show.  Plus, I always enjoy a good superhero cartoon now and then.

Anyways, reading comments the other day on the forums (between Scott and Brent if I remember right), talking about Batmobiles, made me think of the Batman line again.  He was my other favorite hero, outside of Spidey, growing up...and really outside of the Justice League/Superfriends stuff, the main DC hero I was into as a kid.  I will admit I am looking forward to the movie next year too, hopefully it won't disappoint.  Just wondering if anyone out there is collecting anything Bats (maybe the animated line is all that is new right now, not sure), or if you are considering it in the future?  Or even, what does your current collection consist of (did you collect the original B:TAS stuff, etc.?).

Although I know many people aren't a fan of the new "the Batman" cartoon and/or toyline, but I've been watching and although it isn't "Batman: The Animated Series", it isn't too bad.  Maybe its the fact that I'm just enjoying seeing Bats in a solo cartoon again.  I've always been a big Batman fan, so I decided to check out the toy line, since I've always managed to get in kind of late on the other ones.  So far, I've picked up the "zipline" Bats (which is a good figure, aside from the "action feature"), and the new look Joker.  So far...it looks like Mattel is doing a better job with the line this time.  The Bat-variants make a little more sense in some cases (actually used/going to be used in the cartoon I guess), and the "basic" figures like Bruce Wayne, Batman, and Joker are the more heavily packed figures.  Also, in the next two waves, there are two villains each (Penguin, Man Bat, Bane, and Firefly).  Anyways, not too bad of line so far at least...if you like the animated look of the characters.  Definitely a different take on them.  Does make me miss the days of B:TAS being on tv though, I think I might go pick up that DVD set that is out sometime this week.

Edit:  Oh, by the way, here's what the next couple waves look like (they are re-releasing the "normal" Bats, without the action feature, and with a removable blue vest instead, so that's good news.  Upcoming The Batman Figures (http://toynewsi.com/index.php?catid=10&itemid=4470)

Again, not sure if anyone is interested, but some more figures were announced for "The Batman" animated line.  Could it be possible that Mattel is actually starting to "get it"?  These are the case assortments:

Wave "N" - November:

2x Man Bat
2x Bane
1x Zip Batman
1x Bruce Wayne to Batman

Wave "P" - December:

2x Penguin
2x Firefly
2x Power Disc Batman (which is a normal Batman, with a strapped on cannon of some sort)

You can see this info (and pics) over at Action-Figure.com (http://www.action-figure.com/Article12930.html).  Although some of the character designs are a little different than what we are used to, I have picked up a couple from this line, and I'm thinking about continuing.  I've always been a Bat-fan, but seem to get into the lines fairly late in the game.  Figured I could start fresh here, and see what happens.  If Mattel continues case assortments like this, it should make some people happier as well.

Yeah, I've seen the pics of the Bane and Scarecrow too, and they don't look too bad.  It would be nice to see Mattel turn things around in the comic line, and offer more villains over more Bat-variants.  Also a super-poseable type Batman coming up next year sometime I believe.  I agree with you, I'd like to see the 4H tackle Catwoman, as well as the Penguin and Riddler.

I know many people don't care about this line anymore, but from what I've been reading at various sites around the web, it sounds like the Batman comic line might be Going the Way of MOTU (http://www.toymania.com/toybuzz/messages/24670.shtml).  From what I have read, it is sounding like by the time the "new" figs of Bane and Scarecrow (as shown at ToyFair/Comic Con), will be sold not at retail, but overseas and possibly through Diamond somehow.  Probably not real surprising news, but I'm still kind of bummed to see it.  It sounds like Target might continue to get the 2 packs.

Behold! The lameness that is the Batman Begins toyline!!!! (http://www.americandreamcomics.com/index.php?catid=10&itemid=5675)

It just proves Mattel hasn't learned a ******* thing. More stupid variations on the Bat theme. It might be alright if the villains aren't nonexistant.

However, the links DO have small pics which include the VILLIANS!!!
From what I can tell, they look pretty damn cool. I'd just post the pics, but I'm looking out for the spoiler-wary and I'm just too damn lazy.

I saw those pics yesterday, and I wasn't really overly impressed either.  I always planned to pick up a "basic" Batman, and I hope to still do that as long as there is a decent one out.  The villains are a possibility too, we'll have to see how much I like the line/movie.  I think I read that these are 5" scale, which kind of bothers me because they'll be smaller than the Batman comic line as well as the ML and DC Direct scales.  I agree Ben, I really wonder if Mattel has any idea with their action figure lines anymore.

Julius Marx (http://www.aftimes.com/aslu/slu.shtml) has some pics up of an upcoming "Deluxe" Batman from the comic line (that will continue to be sold overseas, still up in the air here in the states), that has added articulation.  Lots of info and photos at the above link, looks kind of neat.  I'm out of the Batman stuff, but might consider picking up one more nice Batman, if they make him near Marvel Legends-style, or maybe a movie figure if its decent.  Anyways, pics above, here's a sample:

I was finally able to find a JLU Atom at a Target.  He's a terrific figure.  They also had the new 3 packs.  I picked up the Superman/Amazo/Starman pack.  I might grab the Red Tornado pack later.  I'd really like to see them make Black Canary into a figure.

Some Batman Begins toys have turned up on ebay (http://search.ebay.com/begins_W0QQsofocusZsoQQsbrftogZ1QQfromZR10QQcatrefZC6QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsadisZ200QQfposZ20164QQsellerZ1QQsassZdishgal1QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQcoactionZcompareQQcopagenumZ1QQcoentrypageZsearch).  I doubt I'll be buying this line, perhaps a single "normal" Batman, but we'll see. From what I've read, these are 5" in scale, which I don't understand at all.  Anyways, for pics of a few of the figures carded, hit the ebay auctions above, while they last.  The "regular" Bats is up over $200 with 3 days remaining already.  Why do people do this?  They'll be $6-8 and probably quite plentiful in a couple of months here.

I ran across a handful of Batman Begins figures at Wal-Mart this morning while picking up the Clone Wars DVD.  I decided to pick up the "normal" Batman figure (which is called "Battle Gear Batman").  I haven't had a chance to open it yet, but it looks like a pretty nice figure...for Mattel.  The articulation is better for them, but nowhere near the level of Toy Biz's work.  Plus, the 5" scale does bug me, it would be nice to have it in line with the Marvel movie properties.  I don't think I'll be picking up any others, but I did want to get one nice movie version of Batman, and this looked like the best I have seen.  Not a bad figure (from what I can see in the package), but Toy Biz just does a much better job with their superheroes.  That said, if you are on the lookout for these, they must be popping up...because they are here in Nebraska :).

Picked up Scarecrow and Battle Gear Batman at Wal-Mart today.

I don't know who sculpted them, but IMO, they did a pretty kick-ass job. The Batman looks better than the movie pics I've seen thus far, and Scarecrow is one creepy-looking screwhead.

I didn't see very many Scarecrow figures, since there was about seven or so different Batman variants, and they were there in force.

I guess they're in the 5" scale to fit in better with the animated toys currently on shelves, or to be in scale with the old Kenner movie Batman toys. Whichever. Likely the former.

Our Wal-Mart didn't have the Scarecrow fig (or likely, I missed it), what do you think of it Ben?  I've been debating whether or not to pick it up.  I don't want to get deep into this line, but I kind of like to have a basic Batman, and then one each of the bad guys.  We'll see.  I still haven't opened the Bats I picked up yet, but from what I can see, I agree, it seems to be sculpted quite well.

Honestly, I wish I wouldn't have bought the Scarecrow.

It just looks like a piece of crap once you get it off the card.

It doesn't look like a modern figure at all. It looks like something that was made in 1994, aesthetically.
The action feature spins his head around, for what, I don't yet know.
And there's a stupid water-squirting gun that will likely not work too well.

Although it was taking a major back seat this weekend, it looked as if the Batman Begins product must have rolled out as well.  I noticed at Target at least, they had a fairly large section on BB stuff, and saw stuff at Wal-Mart as well.  I'm not planning on buying anymore of this, but did take a look at the Batmobile.  I think they wanted like $30 for it though, no thanks.

Just a couple of random thoughts after re-arranging some shelves/figures last week.  I should have heeded Ben's advice and passed on the Scarecrow figure.  Part of me thought that in the future years, if/when there was Joker, etc. movie figure, I'd regret not picking up the "bad guys" from the first movie.  So, I decided to pick up the Scarecrow.  For the sake of having each of Batman's movie villains, ok...he serves that purpose...but otherwise, echoing what Ben said earlier...this figure is all sorts of suck.  I don't mind the Batman figure I have, but I guess after picking up the Fantastic Four movie figures it just doubly makes me realize how Mattel's stuff really can't compare.  With them having the rights to two of the biggest superheroes (Superman and Batman), they really need to step it up.  I don't think I've seen collectors or kids even looking at these figures.  In fact, just glancing at the display when I'm out looking for Star Wars/Marvel stuff, I always seem to see plenty of all the figures..."bloody" Scarecrows and all.  Anyways, I guess I don't have anything else to add, I was just noticing the shortcomings of Mattel's product I guess.  They've had some good stuff throughout the years, but I really think it is time to step things up a bit in the action figure department.  After seeing the Batman Begins movie, I wanted to go out and get a Batmobile/tumbler, but I've held off for now just seeing some of the product they are putting out for this movie.

I should have saved the money for a Batmobile. I loathe that Scarecrow figure.
I found a Ra's al Ghul a bunch of times, and he looks like a terrible figure too. So I've passed on him. He looks like he's in a different scale than the rest of the line, and that's sad.

I haven't found Ducard yet, but I expect he's going to be a ****** figure too. This stuff looks worse than Kenner's work in the 90s for the Batman line, and it's inexcusable the supposed #1 toy company puts out **** like the BB line.

Figured I'd bump this since it looks like the Batman figure thread. Anyway, I heard from Famine a few months back that Mattel was creating a new 3.75 inch Batman the Animated Series line, and I got pumped. The original Batman TAS toyline from the 90's was awesome, and that along with the show got me into superheros. Earlier today I stumbled upon Wave 1 at EntertainmentEarth (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MTH9331A) and I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. Looks like basic 5 point articulation, and in the case of the villains, not even staying true to the source material. I guess the wait for a decent 3.75 inch Batman line will continue.
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Jeff on July 6, 2010, 02:56 PM
I don't think that is the new rumored 3.75" line...   those appear to be the latest round of 5" scale figures sold at "the cheap stores".  I've seen all five of those at the Family Dollar near my house($4 each) and they are all over on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/BATMAN-ANIMATED-CLASSICS-JOKER-ACTION-FIGURE-/290062870684?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item438918289c) as well.  So, either the pic doesn't match the solicit or that solicit isn't for the new rumored 3.75" line...

Of course, I could be wrong.  And if I am, then I'll say that the decision to take those horrible Family Dollar repaint waves and turn them into 3.75" scale line is the worst Mattel decision ever... and that's saying something.
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Brian on July 6, 2010, 05:22 PM
Yeah, I've seen all those at stores like Big Lots and such locally as well - and I hope Jeff is right and these aren't a new line.  I may have missed it or been out of the loop, is there a new TAS line rumored - or a new 3 3/4" Batman line?  If they did go back to TAS stuff, I'd be all over it (and maybe with a regular 3 3/4" line as well).  I've often thought about going back and picking up some of those on ebay anyways, love that show (and pretty much all of the DCAU stuff).
Title: Re: Mattel Batman
Post by: Jeff on July 6, 2010, 05:39 PM
There are all sorts of 3.75" rumors -
- rumors of a GL line to prep for the new movie
- rumors of a new Batman line (and rumors of what the source would be - comics, animated, brave and bold, from upcoming DVD movie, etc)
- rumors of a new DCIH: Blackest Night line to replace the current DCIH: CoIE line that has been running
- rumors of a all-new DCUC-like 3.75" line, etc

SDCC is supposed to offer clarity, but right now rumors are all over the place when it comes to the future of DC 3.75" stuff...  :-\

The Fwoosh (http://thefwoosh.com/2011/06/batman-legacy-series-1-packaging) has some pics up of the first Series (carded) of the upcoming Batman Legacy series.  Although I don't collect for the packaging, I have to say that I think it looks sort of spiffy.  Plus, it seems about time that Batman has his own line (collector's line that is) at retail again, I hope it does well.  Hopefully it won't get too "wacky" like previous Bat-lines have, but we'll have to see.  I know that the Mr. Freeze is a day-glo repaint, but at least it has a basis.  The Batman and Joker look pretty nice though.

Really glad they're getting a Barbara Batgirl out there again in some capacity.  I've been looking for one for our daughter, and they are just so overpriced on ebay and elsewhere these days.  Not too bad of a lineup there, I'll likely pick up the wave as well.  I see that this line is only planned to go until the Dark Knight Returns is here (similar to Green Lantern Classics), and that is really too bad.  There is so much stuff, particularly villains-wise, they could get into in Batman instead of having to fill up so much of the DCUC waves with it - but maybe they want to spread that out.

I did get the Batman and Joker from Wave 1 via BBTS last week, and I thought both were pretty nicely done.  Although I don't keep any of that type of stuff carded, the packaging was kind of nice too.

That's pretty cool news.  As silly as that show is, I have to admit that I watched the reruns after school all the time when I was a kid and loved them.  I would guess this means that a DVD release is around the corner as well, which has been held up for awhile.  Not sure if I'll pick up any of the figures or not, maybe Batman and Robin at least.  Having an Adam West Batman at least would be kind of neat.

At least a Batman and Robin.  I remember watching these after school growing up, even as goofy as it was.

EDIT:  Looking at some of the showroom pics at AFI.com, and it looks like Robin is only available in a 2 pack (with Batman) that appears to be packaged like they are climbing the side of a building like in the show.  That one may pull me in for at least that set.

I was just watching the video review for the '66 Batmobile over at TNI, and it sounds like it is made kind of cheaply, with one solid piece if lightweight plastic. It seems like it still looks pretty nice, but I think it is supposed to run around $50 at TRU.  I have the Batman/Robin 2 pack on the way this week, and had thought about getting the Batmobile (always wanted a 6" scaled one), but I'm not sure now.  Watched the 2 pack review as well, those look pretty good.  Not sure if I will get any others yet.
