Title: Target "Search for Luke" Taun-Taun Battle Pack(s)
Post by: Jesse James on May 11, 2011, 02:55 AM
Sandtroopers got another early proto image, this time it's the rumored Taun-Taun...

(http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/1-08/011Vin_TaunTaunConfirmed01_TN.jpg) (http://www.sandtroopers.com/smf/index.php?topic=14242.msg271084)
Clicky to see it.

The beast appears to have added ball/socket shoulders, and ankles, as well as a new removable saddle.  check out the stirrups.  Pretty slick that those are done that way IMO. :)

The left horn's broke, which is what Luke's had, so that's further confirmation that this is the rumored Luke's Taun-Taun, which I believe also turned up in Euro TRU computers if i'm not mistaken.

The figure should be pretty interesting.

Also of note...  That left horn's a separately sculpted/molded piece.  Leaves it open for them to do a new horn rather than resculpting the entire head, to do Han's more generic Taun-Taun...  Doesn't bode well for a split-belly feature though.   :'(

I really like the details to the saddle now though.  Much nicer.  I expect the figure to be pretty flawless too...  it's been way too long for Hoth Luke to get a decent figure.

When they do Han's less distinct ride, I'd really dig seeing them do a Hoth Rebel scout then, using Han's taun-taun sculpt.  I've always wanted a Hoth Scout for some reason, have some of the wranglers holding its reigns and stuff.

That looks excellent to me.  I would love if they did a pre special edition Wampa to go with it. One of the things I still can't stand about the special ed's is how the Wampa goes from having ears on top to none at all when he's chewing on that Taun-Taun bone.

Yeah, a new, nicely done Hoth Luke will be the real prize of this set.

Finally! I've been hoping for a new Tauntaun (and Hoth Luke, while they're at it) for some time.

Hoth is by far my favorite battle in the entire OT.  Anything from that little corner of the Galaxy is major win to me.

I love the Stirrups this time around  on that sculpt.  Bodes well for ball socket hips on the New Luke Figure.  I wonder if they will make us a Han Solo (in Blue coat ;)) with that added piece of articulation as well.

JJ, what makes the Scouts different from a regular Echo Base/Hoth Trooper?

Looks really nice so far, and I'm really happy that we are (hopefully) getting this soon.  Honestly, after the upcoming Bespin Han, this was one of my most-wanted redos from the OT.  I've been a big fan of the Taun Tauns since I was a kid, and I'm glad that it appears we'll be getting a new "ultimate" version (hopefully this year).  I wonder if the Luke will be "all new" as well.  In a way, it seems like it would have to be, but at the same time you would think they'd want to put the Luke in the basic line first.  I wonder if this will be an exclusive in the same vein as the new Dewback from a couple years ago.

This looks really nice.  Hopefully there will be a Luke and Han version.  I agree that there should be a "Rebel Scout" version.  They should take the Echo Base Soldier and paint him in the vintage brown vest.
Title: Re: New Taun-Taun (w/Luke) Rumor
Post by: Jesse James on May 11, 2011, 03:54 PM
Paul,

Not much really, he's basically just the regular Hoth Soldier with ball-jointed hips to ride the Taun-Taun is all.  The Hoth scouts can be seen briefly getting ready with Echo Base Troopers handling the Taun-Tauns before they're going out...  I believe maybe you see them when Han comes back to the base near the beginning of the movie?  I'm forgetting now exactly.

Basically though it'd just be a tweaked Hoth Rebel Soldier like we have now, to have ball-jointed hips to ride the Taun-Taun is all.

They could make Han Solo's and be really quirky and have the "Then I'll see you in hell!"* version of Solo without gloves and a removable hat (to carry in his hand).

*How does a galaxy far, far away have "hell" in its mythology? "Then I'll see you in Mustafar!"...doesn't work.  :P

I would have preferred a Wampa. I still think the vintage one is the best version of it we have gotten.

The thread at Rebelscum officially ruined this Taun-Taun for me when someone pointed out the arm placement is based on the maquette not the life sized puppet.  :P

This superb sculpt of the upcoming taun taun deserves a superior paintjob: Not only the shades of grey, brown or beige on the fur, but colour for the nails (on hands and feet), the eyes with iris and the interior of the ears pink.

We´re dreaming on a definitive Hoth Luke, with removable hat, binoculars, lightsaber, working holster: Perhaps he will be the wide stance version (unless his articulation resembles the balljoints for tvc Bespin Luke or tlc Dewback sandtrooper)
and later we could buy the figure with more natural stance on retail.

My only disappointment it that this is not assorted with a Han version. I hope it is also shown. I love this!!!!
This is one of my top rated wants, I cannot wait to see what else is coming this year!

I'll bet this is more of a deluxe item since it shouldn't fit into the skinny BP packaging.

Post by: ysalamir on May 14, 2011, 12:02 AM
Cool! Most likely It'll be released with an updated Hoth Luke. I mean that's his ride as shown with the broken horn soo..Maybe a Walmart exclusive like the Dewback and Sandtrooper I'm guessing?

We can still keep our old one with the guts this one probably won't have.

I'd love it if it fit in to the deluxe assortment at $18-20 or so. But if it is $30 something like the dewback, I probably won't get it until clearance/aftermarket.

Maybe just maybe Han's will have a different belly to stuff Luke in. What would be sweet if that set included a battle damaged Luke along with the revises TT and Han. After all it was Han'sthat got split open. Lukes was for lunch.

I am kind of happy to see a Tauntaun get trotted out again.  However, I really just want this for a new Luke Hoth.  If they would throw in a nicer Spirit of Kenobi that would be just fine.  Of course this would lead us to wanting a new Han Tauntaun with open belly and guts.  Then another Wompa version.  If they do the Wompa I would like some sort of cave set to go with it with some accessories like a bloody, meat bone (I know there are several bad jokes in there somewhere).  They kind of did this with that last Wompa release, but of course I'm looking for something a tad bit better than that. I know that is wishing for the stars and planets to align but as long as we're going to be paying most likely $20-$25 for a new Wompa throw in some extras!  8)
Title: Re: New Taun-Taun (w/Luke) Rumor
Post by: ysalamir on May 16, 2011, 11:38 AM
The Saga Wampa is not too bad. You get part of the cave with some sort of ice structure with a bloody bone. I like the upside down Luke and ice structure that attaches to it for display, even though it's not a definitive SA Hoth Luke like we want it's still cool and worth having if just for the ice structure.

I had forgotten it was Han's Tauntaun that got the guts spilled out (duh) Maybe we'll get one later. That would be cool. Other than the overwhelming plastic fumes it probably won't "smell bad on the outside."  :D

I'll likely get it because it is an improvement, but as Hasbro resculpts the better and/or more recent releases, I find myself less excited to get them.   ;)

Nice to see that Hasbro is thinking ahead on this.  This is a clear indication that this must be Luke's tauntaun, since this one doesn't feature the opening belly.  And I think it's pretty obvious that we'll get a new Hoth Luke Skywalker with this release, and a Hoth Han Solo with the opening belly release.  I'm just wondering how far Hasbro will space the two releases apart.

I hope not long, in fact I would love if another retailer got it at the same time. I want to get rid of the old Taun-Tauns and would love 1 ultimate SA Han Hoth. I currently have 2 Blue coat and Brown coat with the hoodless optional head. there have been way too many Han Hoths in last few years.

Insta-buy!  nice.  So this means we are probably getting Luke in the main line I would think - unless there is another one of these packs with him in it.  New Luke with New Wamap?!@?!?!  that would rock

Based on the fact that there was a Luke Tauntaun proto floating out there (cracked horn) and the fact that Target likes to double-up on sets (like last year's 2x Hoth sets), I would not be surprised if there is a Hoth Luke/Tauntaun/Figure 2 set that will also make it out at the same time...

Nice: the cannon concept for Han´s taun taun which was the belly opened animal. An interesting variation on vintage style Hoth Han, hope the figure sits on the mount ok. The rider will need a system of articulation similar to the dewback sandtrooper from tvc.

Now we wait for a cool tvc evolution of Hoth Luke, the character deserves a taller figure, with ultimate detail on clothes sculpt and removable hat.

Super psyched for this set, and I do hope we see a Luke companion set like Jeff mentioned earlier.  It would make sense, as these usually seem to come in sets of two - as well as the Luke Taun Taun proto that people saw earlier.  If it comes with an all-new Hoth Luke, that would be extra spiffy.  I wonder if they would save an all-new figure like that for the regular line though.  Either way, I'm all over this set as well - maybe a couple depending on price.  Too bad they couldn't have made this a "Vintage packaged" item, but I guess we wouldn't get the figures then (at least that way) since the Taun Taun was packaged alone in the vintage line, correct?  Anyways, looks good.

I'm kinda hoping a carded version of the Han in a brown coat myself, but I'm getting that set regardless.  It's glorious.  I get the blue coat nostalgia though.  I'll just be glad to retire the POTf2 stuff.

Luke's got me really curious now.

Title: Re: Target "Search for Luke" Taun-Taun Battle Pack(s)
Post by: Jesse James on July 11, 2011, 02:34 AM
Hmm, never thought much about it.

I'd wager, as with just about everything, there's a difference in scale between the lifesize prop for the hangar scenes and the maquette.  I'll have to check that out next time ESB is on or I have a little time to dig into that.

For some reason I'd be more forgiving of something being off on the Taun-Taun, but it does look a tad larger than the POTF2, which always looked right to me...  Could be just how it's posed or something too I guess.

I think that the stop motion prop was more upright, and the live action prop had more of a horizontal back for sitting.  This looks like the studio prop, with a longer torso.

Does Han ever actually wear that thing on his head?  I know the hood is up or down but I can't remember him in that cap thing?  Not that it matters much.  I will go after this set and plus it's another chance for the shaved rebel soldier.  I would probably always go for an improved Tauntan.

I'm really excited for this set. I think I'd have preferred the brown coat Han with his hood up, but I've got extras so it's no problem there.

I'm stoked they are including the shaved Rebel again. I missed the battle pack he debuted in and I have been holding off on the three pack, I didn't want to pay $20 for one figure. It'll be nice to get him just as a toss in.

The Tauntaun looks pretty nice, the head looks a bit off, especially in the picture Diddly provided. But I'll live with it. Overall I'm quite pleased. :)

The head doesn't bother me nearly as much as the arms.  All the modern Taun-Tauns have the "stop-motion TaunTaun" arms, which are down on his belly, instead of the "life-size prop TaunTaun" arms, which are up on the shoulder blade.

The smaller head I can live with, it's the fact that his arms are down where his boobs should be that bothers me...

I like it in general, but like I said I'm being more forgiving on beasts.  You really can see a head and arm difference there though...  That's odd.

Ryan, I too hoped for a brown coat, and I am still hoping we get a shot at Brown Coat Han with a hood up now, using what I assume is improved leg articulation on that Han figure.  I'm hoping a basic release in a wave...  I'd gladly buy that.

Easy money Hasbro...  come on...  come on...  You know it's your favorite thing.  I'm waving a $10 around here.

It is pretty silly after all this time.  The prop coat was on display at Celebration 4 in LA, and it was pretty clear that it was brown.  But people hang onto the nostalgia of the Kenner vintage figure with the blue coat and they superimpose that onto their memories of the movie.

Man, you should've been here some years ago Sybeck. :)

Seriously this is one of the things that wound up making me come hang out more at Jedi Defender, much less working here, so it's a pretty old and deep debate, but Scott's put up scads of proof to the brown argument...  I'm not even sure where it is, but I'm sure someone can drag it to the surface for this thread now.

I think most people hanging onto blue recognize it's probably brown but simply don't care and prefer the blue because of what they had as a kid.  I think (though I shouldn't speak for him) the boss here feels that way.  I can't argue with people on that then.

I just hope Hasbro gives us a brown coated Han able to ride the friggin' Taun Taun.  I'll buy it gladly, single carded.  Easy money Hasbro...  Easy money.  Though you're kind of prickish if you don't put a hood up head in either as the main one or an extra head.  Seriously, he wears the hood on the beast for the most part...  I'd like the hood then.

Bingo.

I know in person and on screen it is brown, but the one I had as a kid was Blue.  I will buy both colors and not complain.  Hoth Han was a top 2 figure for me back in the day, hence the strong Nostalgia factor.  Others I like more screen accurate/authentic.

Totally possible, but with the debate already I could see him leaving it alone if he likes it being blue, since some think it is...  I don't think he intended that though, and he cares so little about fan's nostalgia anyway, I doubt he'd tinker with something like that.

Now, changing it to black, since "Han always wears black"...  and just totally f'ing with everyone for his own jollies, now that I could see.

That's what I was wondering about too...was it mentioned?  I know we heard that the Landspeeder and Luke's Taun Taun were coming to Target, but is this set slated to hit there as well?

Other than new zeland or wherever this was last spotted, has anyone heard anything new about this item?

What is really going on with the vintage and the target exclusive items. After the Blu Ray Comm figure set, Nothing.

If anyone has some info, please share.

This is getting from bad to worse.

JTA reports this has been found in the US now, so start looking.

Best part? It's $24.99, the exact same price as Luke's Taun-Taun.

So you pay the same for 1 Taun-Taun as you do for a Taun-Taun with 2 action figures thrown in.

That makes sense.  ::)

Picked this up yesterday.  The $24.99 price seems about right... and helps even out some of the overpriced mark they have on the vintage Tauntaun and Landspeeder.

Unfortunately no pricing error. Picked up two SFLS BP's, vintage landspeeder and found Bom Vimdin(finally) at a target I don't shop at often. Had to leave Luke's Taun Taun behind. $24.99 for all three items. $24.99 for luke's TT also. $10.99 for Bom. Have to go back next week for the Taun Taun. Happy Hunting everyone.

I picked up this set today and it's great.  I'll always take more of those Hoth Rebels, I'm nuts for Han so this is a nice new variant, and the new TaunTaun is swell.

$25 for this set feels pretty fair for a new beastie and two figures... and really shames the solo Luke TaunTaun at the same price.

For those that bought the set, is that little scanner/greeblie the Hoth Rebel is holding new or recycled?  It looks familiar , but I can't place it...

Not having the set, but just going off memory of the pic, it's the one from the Saga Han Solo, K-3PO, and I think maybe one or two other figures had it?  Or maybe not.  :-\

It's not that Han/K3PO scanner, it's a handheld thingy - my camera is recharging or I'd take a pic.   :-\

I'm not sure if it's new - but I figured out where I've seen it before - it was originally supposed to come with him when he was supposed to be a single carded figure -

Cool and kind of odd that they finally included it.

So a local collector on Yakface is freaking out because he called a few stores in the area and they told him this set isn't being ordered by any stores and isn't in the nearest distribution center (apparently in Dallas). I think they were just pulling his leg. Which reminds me, I've been seeing a lot of online freakout for these new exclusives though and I'm not really understanding it. Maybe it's just because we haven't seen anything new in so long?
Title: Re: Target "Search for Luke" Taun-Taun Battle Pack(s)

I've fielded several emails from folks being told that this item is "discontinued", when obviously that isn't the case. I think that Target's system must say "no longer available" or something along those line if the store hasn't received their first allotment of product and they don't have a location on the floor or in the back.

I used the some DCPI searches I found on rebelscum to locate these in my area, and went and didn't find them on the shelf. Someone was good enough to go pull these out of the back for me, and within 20 minutes I had all three of these sets. They are expensive, but I look at being a drought in star wars till the end of january, so why not get them now.

Scored one of these to keep MIB, one to open and one for Captain Piet this morning.

The endcap had been set up, but nothing had been put out yet, so I asked an employee to pull both assortments and was able to grab everything I needed.

Glad to have the last of the 2011 Target exclusives out of the way... (unless the Villains & Sith 2-packs hit)

Picked up this set myself. I like it, but my only complaint is that Han's cloth part of the coat doesn't seem to be done well. I looked through a couple, but they all seem to be a bit short. Definitely a figure for display on the Taun Taun.

Love this pic!

I picked up this set today.  Glad to get this set, but it seems that Target has more than their fair share of exclusives at the moment.

Be that as it may, I really like the new tauntaun.  I would've like to see Hasbro go all out and give the rear legs several points of articulation each, but that might have taken away from the sculpt.  I think we have to expect another version of Han's tauntaun down the line with the split belly.  The forward compatability of that open belly seems to be screaming that out as plain as day.  And I think in that case we'll get this same tauntaun with Han (hood up), Luke and a split belly.  I could do without the guts, but whatever.

I expect swaps galore, more on the vinty one though by douches.  Target's douchey on the price, don't get me wrong, but then you just don't buy.  There's no "have to" with this stuff.

Got this battlepack at Target.  $24.99 plus tax for the Han, Taun-Taun and a Hoth Rebel is pretty sweet.  Not paying the same price for the vinty boxed version.

I didn't even really have to "get" the battlepack.  It was more like, "hey wife, here's your pumpkin spice latte I just waited 20 minutes in line for, gee wiz this taun-taun looks like it'd be a great stocking stuffer for Christmas.  I'm just gonna go wait out in the car until you're done shopping and maybe there will be one less taun-taun in stock by the time you checkout."

Yeah.  So.

FYI, a local collector called Target so much about this set that they finally told him it's scheduled to be put out on November 6th with the other exclusives. That's a Sunday, which I think is normally when this stuff is released, and I'd assume there will be an endcap or so.

So I opened this...

Other than the colors, the Han is great. Such a shame this isn't brown coated, and includes both head/hat options (hood up/down).  Though, it leaves the obvious re-release available, so I hope they're planning on it because I'll buy it for certain.  The pistol is a little lame too (lacks paint it seems).

The Rebel is great that it includes the scanner watchamacallit.  Great figure, nice extra piece for it.

The Taun-Taun is nice, and a marked improvement, but after all that work on the saddle and making it removable, they make the strap around his tail/ass molded on?  WTF?  That's just some odd stuff.

And would it REALLY have been that hard to just give us the removable belly/guts thing they're obviously leaving open as an option, considering this is the appropriate beast?  The way things cost, I really think you should get the max for your buck, and so I feel they didn't really go all out on this, and they should have.

Good set, just not great. :)  Still miles superior to the Luke one though.

I went to Target last night with DPCI #s in hand in hopes of finding the 3 exclusives and found my buddy that works there in the toy dept (a guy I have known since like 2nd grade).  This store is a stickler for not bringing things out early so I didn't expect much - I have had some battles with this store.  He looked up the numbers for me, they had them in stock, went to the back stockroom and came back empty handed.  He said he didn't have many on hand and that he would more than likely be resetting the area where these are supposed to go sometime within the week.

Just thought I would share for those looking - these may have a shelf space within a week.  Then again, he may be wrong and it may be a while longer like Diddly posted...

2 figures at $8 a piece
1 new Taun Taun for $9.

I'd say that is a pretty decent bargain considering my Target has a bunch of Prequel crap on Vintage cards hanging up waiting to go to the island of misfit toys.

I didn't say I was gonna buy 10 of them...but I might.

It's a good deal, don't get me wrong, I just don't know if I want to drop another $25...  Between the other two and this one, that's been a LOT for me to drop on toys in a really short period of time, so I'm just feeling tapped out.   :-\

My stores didn't have a ton of any of the new exclusives though, so I wonder if maybe they won't linger much either.

I could totally see this Han figure w/a Hood Up head and more appropriate coat color being released as part of the Vintage Collection before that line ends. Seems like a no-brainer to me, plus it also gives us a Vintage carded figure that more closely matches the Kenner figure from the 80s.

Found this set tonight. Four sets on an endcap, I only snagged one for now. I might get a second later, I like Paul's idea of making a Rebel Scout. Haven't gotten to open it yet but Han's coat coloring is really the only bad part about this set. Well that and it not being the superior hod up version.

The scout idea's growing on me a lot, plus this is the two full-horned Taun-Taun to boot...  That makes me consider it even more.   :-[  Maybe if I've got some extra scratch next pay I'll cave.  I could always use another Rebel, and the Han's parts are probably usable to some degree too other than just the legs.

*sigh*

Sometimes I hate Paul's good ideas since they involve spending more!

I was gonna look into chopping off a bit of the horn and basically making it Luke's Tauntaun... it would save me $25 from not buying Luke's actual Tauntaun, plus you get another Hoth Rebel and Han.

Just as my buddy said he would do the reset this week for this stuff, he followed through.  he sent me a text saying he set up the area.  I hope they are not all gone by the time I get over there   ;D

he let me know in advance he would not be able to be able to hold anything - this store, as I think i have said, is strict.

update:  sure enough I got there after work and grabbed 2 of the search for Luke sets, and 1 Luke Taun-Taun, and 1 speeder.

Probably going to return either the Luke Taun-Taun or one of the Search for Luke sets - I will decide later.  Going to see if the price for the Luke Taun-Taun goes down.

I had originally intended to sell off the Han when I first got the set, but I just really like the way he fits on the saddle- so I put a drybrushing of brown across all of the blue, and wet-painted some brown onto the soft goods.  Really can't see much blue now, and he looks much better!  As for the Tauntaun, the sculpt just grows on you.  I have the POTF2 Luke version one shelf over, and after a week of visually comparing, the older sculpt is definitely starting to show its age.  I wasn't going to buy the new Luke tauntaun, but I just may now.

Picked up this set last night. I really like the taun taun. The rebel trooper is always welcome and the extra gadget is cool. I think that's the best paint job on that particular Han Solo head I've seen. The paint on the fur of his hood is a really weird color though, I've never customized anything in my life but I think I can manage this.

These are becoming more and more common around my area. I'll pick up a second set eventually. Also saw a returned set today that had a POTF2 Tauntaun, regular Brown Coat Hoth Han and the Bespin Han from the 30AC Torture Rack set. Hid that one behind some RC trucks although I need to start placing Post Its on defective merchandise warning people not to buy it and stores to take it off the shelves.

I think this set is a real value compared to the single packed Taun Taun, so I only bought the BP.  With such high prices, Hasbro can keep those 'collector targeted' items - I for one wont be buying them anymore...
