Title: Age old question - What do you want for Christmas?
Post by: Phrubruh on November 25, 2011, 02:10 PM
Every year my wife asks me what I want for Christmas. I respond with things like certain vintage star wars stuff or certain figures or ships. Or I might respond with certain vintage video game carts or systems or certain programming books. Of course non of this stuff is ever available in real stores. No matter what I ask for I'm told that is stuff you can buy for yourself. What is stuff she can actually find and buy for me?

Do you guys have this problem? People ask what you want for Christmas but never want to buy those kinds of things you ask for?

So what are some good things the average Star Wars geek could get for Christmas even if he already owns a comb?

This pretty much happens to me every year. They'll ask what I want and then they'll ask me where to find it, as if there wasn't a Barnes & Noble in every city in America. A couple years back I asked for that Making of ESB book, and they got me a Darth Vader cookie jar. This year, I mentioned something about either the Achtung Baby boxset or the Pearl Jam 20 book, so I'll just have to wait and see what I get.

I've asked the people I buy for what they want, and I've already got all of it, so there's really no excuse why they can't get me what I want. I'm sure I'll end up buying both those things on December 26th.

Yeah, that's sad, Ben. Google is useful, or even Amazon... Of course, I've come to the realization that most people in my family don't enjoy the same music or don't know about Star Wars that I've sent out my list with pictures on it.

wow you come across as really ungrateful and self entitled in that post.

I just tell them I don't want anything because in reality the things I want are too expensive and I don't expect or want my family and friends to spend a lot of their money on me. I end up settling for a book or maybe a cheap xbox game if they really want to get me something. The same applies for birthdays too.

My biggest problem is I'll put the effort in and they won't. It's already started this year, and I kind of flew off the handle there. It happens every year, so I guess that yes, I am quite ungrateful. They don't try or care, so whatever.  :-\

Question: "What do you want for Christmas?" I respond with my list. The following is a list of common responses I get back:

Why do you want that?
Where are you going to put that?
There is no room for that.
I don't buy that kind of thing.
That is something you can buy for yourself.
You don't need that.
What is something you want that I can actually buy in a store?
You'll shoot your eye out.

That is hilarious...I have heard every single one of those comments, except for the eye thing.  :D

Reminds me of a movie.  Can't quite put a finger on it  Seems strangely seasonal.  :-X

Ask Scott. He seems to know about that kind of thing.

Yeah, I believe there's a king in it that where's a red suit, kind of jolly, fat, and there are elves.

I'd actually like to just watch Christmas Vacation, unedited, for once.  It seems ABC Family has the rights this year.  ::)  Why can't Comedy Central get it and air it at 1 a.m. at least once?  Blah.

You're thinking of The Godfather.

But I wouldn't really consider it a Christmas movie, per se, so I don't know where you're getting that from.

He said seasonal...  maybe the season he's referring to is whacking season?

Though Whacking Day isn't until May... hmmm.

Doesn't that comment belong in the Hotties thread?

Now we know what Jesse would like for Christmas.

I'm looking for a new iPod, some graphic novels, and books.

I bought myself a laptop on BF for my own present.  I haven't "asked" for anything for Christmas since I was a boy.  I still remember hacking up the Sears Wish Book each year and glueing pictures and writing out descriptions of what I wanted to sheets of paper.   :D

Nowadays if I get something from whoever then that's cool, if not then - I really don't care.  More about giving then receiving.

I hate owning movies for some reason, but that's one maybe worth picking up.  It's like Star Wars...  I never watch it unless it's on.  Hopefully In-Demand has it again this year.  I think they did last year and that's how I eventually caught it at some point.

I'm just happy to be with my family and not over in Afghanistan.  Anything under the tree after that is gravy.

gravy under the tree can really ruin your floors, though.

Unless your floors are, of course, made of turkey...  Then it's just gravy.
