Are the Hobbit sets (like the one Scott posted) scheduled to hit this year yet?  I've been looking at the LOTR sets and considering getting those (I did pick up the smaller Gandalf/cart set), but I think if I could only afford one larger set I'd like the set pictured above.  Has anyone picked up the other LOTR sets?

Sweet...I'm guessing the Spider Rescure and Barrell Escape were pushed from Movie 1 to Movie 2 and Lego had to cover their asses.  I am really looking forward to this movie.

That's the consensus from the interwebs.

Looks like you have to buy all the sets to get the 13 dwarves, but at least there's no double dips like there was with the LOTR sets and the Fellowship.

I've not seen any out at stores, but saw Hobbit action figures at K-Mart, my first sighting outside TRU.

Gotta admit I'm kinda anxious to see the sets in person.

I saw these sets at our WM this weekend, and man was I tempted to pick some of them up.  I did get the smallest "Riddles" set, but that's it for now.  If we weren't so tight with Christmas coming up, I would have liked to grab more.  All of them are nice, but I really want the Unexpected Party set with Bag End.  That's going on the Christmas list :).  I haven't seen them anywhere else at retail yet.

Anyone know there was a Mirkwood elf bagged figure available at TRU just last month?  Anyone happen to have one?  I missed this somehow.  I almost missed the Gandalf out now actually, for me and the kids.  :(

Would love 3 of the Mirkwood elf but can't even find out if they're still available anywhere.  Only coming out last month, I figured they'd still be around.

Kind of a neat video if you have the time to watch it, the building of a basically life size Hobbit house:

Man, it looks like it would be cool to work for LEGO ;).

I just got an email from TRU that says if you spend $20 on Lego (i am guessing this is valid Sun/Mon) you get this set free.  Perhaps your local store will have these in stock tomorrow?

Checke my ap and both Gandalf and elf are available for store pickup.  I'm sad at the TRU set prices tho.  Even with a free fig the mirkwood and tree sets are cheaper at Walmart.  Ill order a couple extra elves I think and avoid buying a set even. :( I never realized TRU was that overpriced on Lego sets.  Yikes.

Today my mom was at TRU shopping for a last minute present for my son and she decided on Lego sets called me to ask which one and while she was in the store I was on amazon looking at the sets.  I couldn't believe how much more expensive TRU was on almost all of these.

Anyway, she had the TRU Groupon which was set to expire today so she bought from them there anyway and she went with the Dwarves in the tree set.  I told her to grab on of the elves in baggy too.

Post by: Diddly on December 24, 2012, 03:11 AM
I seriously think TRU ups the price on most items during the holidays from the usual high prices... I mean, ever noticed how Wal-Mart and Target are usually picked clean of LEGO around Christmas while TRU has tons of sets? I think it's their way of getting more out of the frantic parents who need to buy sets.

I keep mental notes on the prices of the Star Wars stuff solely for the purpose of comparing it to the MSRP and hopefully sharing a laugh/rolleyes here from time to time, and I've noticed stuff inching higher the last few weeks. Like the Palpatine's Arrest set, I think it has like an $80 MSRP, TRU has been selling it for $110, and the other day I noticed my store had it for $120. Insane.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: efranks on December 25, 2012, 01:33 AM
TRU is notorious for being up to $30 over WM and Target prices on Lego sets.  I was in there Sunday and they still had some Harry Potter Hogwarts (4867) sets which retailed for $49.99...TRU had them for $79.99.  Even when it's not the holiday season, TRU is still way over the odds on sets.

I think they do it because, like Diddly said, they can be the last stop for people that find stuff sold out at WM and Target, plus they carry a lot more inventory than either of the other two.  They have the mindset that since they're really the only toy retailer left, on a large scale, that they're a destination and people will pay more for the experience.

Also got the Hobbithole set for Christmas, looking forward to putting that together.  Like Jesse mentioned, I'd really like to get some of the LOTR sets.  I'm debating whether to put some gift cards towards one of those sets or the Jabba's Palace one.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Jesse James on December 27, 2012, 09:49 PM
I'm aiming for Moria and Orc Forge soon I think.

Hobbithole took a little while to build but it's outstanding.  Great set.

I got the Orc/Tree set myself right before XMas because the WM Ap had it for $37, so I made them adjust to that price and they did.  Wish I'd gotten the Mirkwood set then too because it was $21-ish and a great set.

Hobbit/LOTR sets are DECIMATED at WM, KM, and Target.  These were big this year.  Bigger than Star Wars sets too, by far.  Lots of SW sets still around though they were hit hard as well.  Just still finding some of those whereas Hobbit/LOTR are gone.  I imagine TRU has a lot, of everything, as they should.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Brian on January 3, 2013, 12:51 PM
I was just mentioning this in the LOTR LEGO thread, but these sets are pretty ransacked around here as well.  The LOTR ones in particular seem to be mostly gone for the moment, and there are a couple that I'd like to pick up if I can.  I don't know if these will be disappearing soon (replaced by Hobbit stuff), or not.  Anyways, I got the Unexpected Party set for Christmas and then had a gift card that I used to pick up the Mirwood one as well (and also had the Riddles set from earlier on).  It has been a blast building these with our daughter, who is way into LEGOs these days (and Middle Earth stuff, despite not really seeing the movies aside from the "good guy" parts of LOTR).  Our kitchen table right now is covered with hobbits, dwarves, elves, Gandalf, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as various Star Wars minifigs.  Oh, and one Harry Potter.  Despite getting into LEGO stuff slowly, it really has been a downhill slide and I could see getting quite obsessed with these :).  Now I just have to figure out where they go once they're built.

I'd say LOTR sets are Oin the way out (see what I did there?) for The Hobbit, till new LOTR sets ship (huzzah!) later this year.

I highly recommend the Orc Forge set. It was one of the most fun sets to build and has great display and play qualities. You'll probably want to get it from Lego's site as it's a Target exclusive otherwise and I haven't seen one in Targets since well before the holidays.  Moria isn't bad, but it is WAY overpriced. Most of that is probably due to the Cave Troll being a new piece but it still is the least "value" of the LOTR sets IMO.

Also, TRU has, in general, gotten ridiculous with their prices, Lego or otherwise, in the last year or so. I won't buy Lego from TRU at all unless there is a sale of some sort and never buy their exclusives anywhere but Lego SAH, which is always actual retail and you get VIP points, semi-frequent free shipping and free polybags over a certain amount.

That's what I thought would maybe be happening, thanks for the heads up Jesse.  We'll likely be hitting some other Wal-Marts this weekend hoping to find some of the remaining LOTR sets.  We'd really like to get the Shelob set (which I think is still at TRU.com/LEGO), and - if on clearance/sale - the Mines of Moria.

I'm sure most have seen this already, but Target has an exclusive version of the Blu Ray of the Hobbit for sale tomorrow that includes a LEGO Bilbo minifig.  I believe this is an "exclusive" fig, as it is Bilbo with a blue jacket - I don't think we've gotten that version yet, right?  Anyways, just a heads up for anyone interested, I think it is the same price as the regular release.

Nabbed the TRU set escaping from the Mirkwood elves thing.  I love the set, and the drunken elf.  Now, debating picking up the last couple Hobbit sets and Helms Deep...  Helms Deep seems like a waste almost but I dunno.  I don't like it particularly because it's comically small, to me, but I want the figures...  I'm tempted to just get the figures somehow.

Yikes yeah, not my style, but I'd have to determine how into the figures I am...  I want the Berserker and Haldir the most...  The rest, meh.

That video of Orthanc floored me...  so did the price.

I think I may nab the Orc Forge full price just because.  Target doesn't seem to do good Lego sales much.

Found myself a Goblin King for $69, so I nabbed that...  I'm him hawing on it now but I'm keeping it I'm pretty sure.  $69 still hurts to spend, but to complete the dwarves, yay.

Spider sets were all full price still. :(  At least at the WM's that had them in stock still.

They had Moria for $59 I believe, and $9 on the Gandalf set which largely disappeared so I counted myself lucky to get one of those for $9 even though it didn't have anything new to me...  I got it just for completism's sake at this point.

Now, I'd like to find Uruk Hai sets for clearance to expand my Helm's Deep wall, and then the Spiders I just need to wrap this up and move onto the new LOTR sets completely and anticipation of the next Hobbit sets.

I've seen the Uruk-hai sets marked down to $21 at Walmart but mine still has them regular price at $29.  I passed on both prices, but now that I have the Helm's Deep set I may pick up at least 1 at regular price and wait for a sale or when I get back to that other WM for a couple more.

K-Mart's are marked to $28, and I keep hoping they run an extra 50% off because I'd probably buy 3 at that, and expand my Helm's Deep wall to a nice respectable length and have some goofy Uruk Hai goobers running around outside like jackwagons.

So, still no Smaug...you'd think they would release a Smaug set with this movie but have failed to do so.  I just do not understand the Movie biz and their reluctance to show off any of the villains before the movie hits.  Is it really that big of a secret?  He is a dragon.

In WM this weekend, and besides the 45 min wait to check out, I realized why I'm glad I haven't shopped at a Target or WM this season at all...  That said, I did see NEW Hobbit sets, and saw the Laketown set, and really wish I'd asked for this for Xmas now. :P

It's a dandy.  I kinda like the direction they went with the Laketown characters for the movie, and the minis look great.  I could easily see the Laketown sets combining to make a bigger Laketown too...  just awesome.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Pete_Fett on January 5, 2014, 07:36 PM
Decided that I would make the plunge into LOTR - Lego and The Hobbit - Lego this weekend. Seems like a fairly small theme line, should be easy enough to catch up on. For the Hobbit line, I grabbed:

Dol Guldur Ambush
Dol Guldur Battle
The Goblin King Battle

I was able to pick up all three sets on sale at Kmart - the two Dol Guldur sets I picked up online - also taking advantage of a $10 off $75 purchase for Shop Your Way Rewards members. The Goblin King set was marked down to $76 and I had some rewards points that redeemed for the purchase as well.

Gonna focus on picking up the rest of the 2012 sets before I purchase either the Lake Town or Mirkwood Elf Army sets just cause they're new and those 2012 sets are probably on borrowed time in stores.... In fact, I had seen the Riddles for the Ring set all over before the holidays and now it is totally cleared out in the stores by my house, so what I thought would end up being an easy set to grab, may prove to be a challenge.

Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Pete_Fett on January 8, 2014, 10:12 AM
Over the past couple of days, I've picked up these three sets:

Riddles for the Ring
Attack of the Wargs
Barrel Escape

The Barrel Escape set is currently on sale at TRU.com for $27.99 so I ordered that with store pick-up. I found Riddles for the Ring at a Kmart for $7.99 and I got Attack of the Wargs at a TRU who has it priced at $59.99 but with the current deal of $15 off any Lego purchase of $60, even though I was short the $0.01 they still gave me the $15 off...

Since the other 2012 Hobbit Sets (Mirkwood Spiders & Unexpected Gathering) don't appear to be going anywhere / retiring anytime soon, I'm probably gonna take a break from Hobbit sets and focus purely on getting the rest of the 2012 LOTR sets.

If I do get anything, I might pull the trigger on an auction for all of the three released Polybag Mini-figs if I see a reasonable deal.

The Attack of the Wargs set is great and even if you limit yourself to collecting only Star Wars Lego sets, pick up the Warg set simply for the tree - they did a great job with it's design and it would make a great companion piece to anyone's Ewok Village should they want to add more greenery to their display. I'm sure you could always sell of the mini-figs & Wargs w/o any problem and probably bring the overall cost of the tree down to almost nothing.

There are more than 3 polybag sets.  There are Frodo, Gandalf, UrukHai, Mirkwood Elf, Elrond, and I believe that is it but I might be forgetting one.  I wouldn't pay much for any of them as all the figures are in other sets at this point.  Neat to have but not pay an arm and a leg for.

Yes, sorry - I should have been specific - there are three Hobbit Poly Bag sets:
Gandalf at Dol Guldor
Mirkwood Elf
Laketown Guard

For the Lord of the Rings line there are three others:
Frodo w/Cooking Corner
Uruk-Hai w/Ballista
Elrond (from Prologue)

I was referring specifically to those three Hobbit Polybag sets - I saw an auction for all three for less than $30, not sure if that's a good price or not though.

I've missed the Laketown Guard all together...  When did that even come out?  Never saw a mention here of it.

Apparently it started having availability in Toys R Us stores in December. I never saw it myself, I see it on eBay - it is the exact same mini fig as the one that comes with the Lake-town Chase set (according to Brickset.com) - here's details on the set - http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=30216-1 - seems like a neat way to add to the Lake-town Guardsmen.

My guess is that once Toys R Us finishes their annual inventory - we'll start to see it show up a bit more at the stores.

When I ordered the Barrel Escape set I saw that it was in-stock and the website indicated also in-stock at the store I was going to pick up the other set from so I threw it into my shopping cart - shortly after the order, I got notified that they actually DIDN'T have it in stock and it was removed from my order. So my thinking is that in the TRU computer system a box of these is scheduled for delivery to that store and the only thing holding is back is annual inventory.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Jesse James on January 8, 2014, 11:05 PM
Yeah I'd buy about 10 of those given the chance I think since I dug the northern look to the Laketown characters and that's a first actually for a single army builder human character.

I wish I could've gotten tons of the elf but I missed him too and just managed to get some off here for me and the boys.

Elrond I never got, but he's the same I think as is in the Council set.

I'd like to see Lego dish more army builder sets.  This Mirkwood Elf set is a great starting point and vastly superior to the Rohirim wall set that they did.  You only got a few figures in that set.  The Mirkwood set is far better for that purpose.  Orcs and Elves galore.  Even Thranduil can be parted out to make other elves if you have the parts, or even just random ME characters.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Pete_Fett on January 9, 2014, 12:33 AM
Well - the printing on the Poly-bagged Elrond looks (to me at least) to be representative of him during the final battle of the 2nd Age when Sauron was defeated...

And then the Elrond that comes with the Council set, is like how he's dressed in Fellowship of the Ring...

So they are technically different.

It's interesting that you mention the Mirkwood Elf set - I was looking at all of the sets for the Hobbit and LOTR on brickset.com and apparently there was a poly-bagged Legolas that was planned but not released. It doesn't look like the minifig was going to be anything other than a re-release of the Mirkwood Spiders set Legolas, but the accessories he came with were kinda neat - like a target practice thing. Anyway, in the instructions for that set, there is a typical Lego picture that shows what you can make if you combine two sets. In this case, it's combining two of set 79012 to make a larger Mirkwood set.

It's not something that I plan to do right away, but I am very tempted to get at least TWO of the Mirkwood Elves set just so I can make a larger "fort" with a tower at each end.

In case you're curious about the cancelled Polybag Legolas the instructions can be found here:

Wow that elrond is way different.  I had no idea.  Ugh.  Now i want one. :(

The Mirkwood set, that's what I'm gonna do, and if I see them on clearance I plan to stack a bunch of them.  I got some Uruk Hai sets to extend Helms Deep.

Actually the Black Gate of Mordor is expandable too, to have 2 towers at the ends...  Lego gets ya comin' and goin'!

Wow - I built that set and I totally didn't notice it!

The cool thing though about that set is that it has the unique Mouth of Sauron, Gandalf the White and Aragorn mini figures - so selling those off to offset picking up a 2nd Black Gate would help.

Yup plus an Eagle if you didn't want it since I imagine those are worth something.

It's not my favorite set, but it is expandable and looks better with towers on the ends I think.
Title: Re: The Hobbit -LEGO
Post by: Pete_Fett on January 11, 2014, 05:55 PM
I would totally want to keep the Eagle to add to the Attack of the Wargs set.

I did pick up 2x of the Mirkwood Elves set at Toy R Us today - I got them to price match Lego Shop and I also got the $15 off from the current Lego sale when I combined them with the Mirkwood Spiders set which I also had them price match. So all three sets were $75 plus tax.

For Hobbit boxed sets I'm down to just Unexpected Gathering and Lake-town Chase.

Edit: Just put together the two Mirkwood Elf Army sets and they look great chained together!

Hey Jesse - did you know about the variant Bilbo mini-fig that came with the Hobbit Blu Ray? I saw it on eBay when I was looking through auctions for the remaining 2012 LOTR sets I need.

One more item to add to the pile... :-\

He has the blue jacket he wore during the Hobbiton market scene in the EE, not the red he wore during the rest of the movie.

Mine's still in the case.  The boys know not to touch it...

Hmmmmm...  I may not fight to get one of those then...  Minor enough I can't see me being that bothered.  That Elrond bagged figure is annoying me now though.  :-\

Yeah - it's a minor variation - and VERY low on my list.

Ordered Lake Town Chase and a couple Lake Town Guards from Toys R Us.com - using $10 in Rewards R Us bucks combined with the 15% off coupon.

Also picked up on eBay the Gandalf and Dol Guldur polybag set.

Once I receive those purchases, the only thing I'll still need to get from the Hobbit line is the Mirkwood Elf Guard polybag set. There's the Legolas polybag set too, but that's just starting to trickle out now.

I still haven't decided if I want to spend ~$25 just for that Blue Coat Bilbo minifigure....

I didn't recall seeing them at Toy Fair, but were there any new sets shown/announced for the Hobbit or LOTR lines, or do we already know everything that is on the way this year?

The only thing I saw was a little poster that said "more sets coming" or something like that for The Hobbit.

Here is the pic from ToyArk's coverage:

Back in October-ish there were some rumored Lord of the Rings sets coming this year:

Quote
The Mirror of Galadriel – Includes Frodo in a plain shirt and Galadriel. There is a small mirror and a statue. – $12.99

Amon Hen Ambush – Includes 2 Uruk Hai, Boromir, and what he believes is Merry. Small set of steps and the palantir tower. – $25.99

The Defence of Osgiliath – Includes 2 Orcs, a Gondor Knight, and maybe a Ranger. Small orc boat and ruins. – $40.00

Witch King Showdown – Includes the Witch King, Theoden, a Rider of Rohan (Eowyn), a white horse, and a Nazgul. Also includes a Fellbeast and small grassy area. – $60.00

The Battle of Minas Tirith – Includes Gandalf, 2 Gondor Knights, maybe 4 Orcs, a troll, and possibly Pippen. Set has 1 large gate at ground level, 2 smaller levels with a small house and the citadel. Also includes an orc catapult outside the city. – $120.00

And I think a lot of folks expected to see them on display, but there was no presence of Lego: Lord of the Rings at Toy Fair. So maybe SDCC (if these rumors are even legit)...

This past weekend (June 7-8), GameStop had a Lego-related event - which from the flyer, seemed to mostly center around having the Lego games on sale and then giving away some polybag mini figures - like for the Lego Movie - they had "Western" Emmett - and for Lego Hobbit they were giving away "Good Morning Bilbo Baggins"

I had already scored one off eBay, but on a lark I went into the Gamestop near where I work this afternoon and asked about the promotion. The guy behind the counter indicated that nobody came in for the Hobbit stuff and they freely gave me one of the Bilbo polybags - so now I have a spare.

If you have a Gamestop nearby, I recommend going in and asking if you're looking for this minifig.

If anyone is looking for this minifig and has either the Chrome Stormtrooper or White Boba Fett minifigs from a few years back that they'd be willing to trade for it, send me a PM.

The Hollywood Reporter has a story up now about a new Lonely Mountain set coming later this year - looks pretty good...

Here is the link to their story: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/comic-con-lego-unveil-smaug-720681

Seems like a bit much for $130, but it looks like they've cut off part of the set for the picture, so it's hard to tell...

Grabbed the SDCC Bard the Bowman mini-figure off eBay this week. Probably paid more than I should, but since it's still unknown whether this version of the character will show up in one of the four Hobbit sets coming later this year, I took the gamble.

I never got the Azog figure from last year's SDCC, but that ended up being okay since he showed up in the Dol Guldur set - if that ends up being the case with the Bard minifigure as well, then I'll just keep it for what it is - a nice memento from SDCC...

Man I wish there was a cheaper way to get Smaug.  Those sets just aren't appealing really. The five armies kinda sucks to be honest.

Agreed - I grabbed the new Lake Town set and the Witch King Battle set - and the only thing cool out of all of these sets IMHO was the Witch King and Galadriel (sp?) mini-figures.

Yeah those are the only ones kind of tempting me, and the Laketown one is really just an expansion of Laketown somewhat...  Not sure I'd want it.  The figures are meh.

Some army building sets would've been appreciated, ala Star Wars.  Less mains, more randoms.  Needed that for LOTR too.  Elves, Rohirim, Orcs, Uruk Hai, Goblins, Gondorians (Rangers and soldiers), prologue soldiers (humans, elves, Orcs), Dwarf soldiers, Trolls (Battle), etc.  The army building sets are always the most interesting to me in Star Wars too I guess.  Maybe it's just me, I just feel they've neglected the secondary people a bit in the line, unlike Star Wars.

While the double VIP points were still in effect I grabbed the final two Hobbit sets I needed - finally got a chance to put together Smaug last night - they did a great job on him - gonna finish the lonely Mountain Set tonight. The Battle of the Five Armies (which is Army-less mini-figure wise) was even more of a let-down than I was expecting...

I picked up the Galadriel/Elrond/Witch King set at K-Mart...  I blew Reward Points on it, so it was free.

They had all the sets but the one with Smaug, which is probably the only other one I want due to Smaug... The rest of it is just boring as can be.

Anyway, the Galadriel set is pretty awesome.  She's a really neat figure herself, and getting the Witch King too, and a (I think) unique Elrond in battle armor is all pretty good stuff.  The Witch King glows too, or at least his head does, and so he's looking goofy on my shelf in the shadows right now.

The background stuff just blends in with Dol Guldor bits and pieces.  It's junk.  $15 for 3 mini figs, basically, hurts, but it's as interesting as this year's assortment gets.  All the sets really just add to sets we already have, or that is how it feels I guess.  And there's so little new as far as figures.  It really bites.

Yes - his armor is indeed unique - I was thinking it was the same as the mini figure from the LOTR Lego Game Polybag release, but it's not.

Yeah I wasn't sure, and thought if it was anything it'd be that figure (which I don't have anyway) but it's not so that's fine I guess.

I wish they just did some better sets...  Why not Elf cavalry, or some Orc/Warg army building sets?  Hell, sets to army build eagles and other stuff would be kinda nice too.

And I so wish Smaug were his own kit, like the Creator sets...  He really deserves to be more than a pack-in undersized figure IMO.
