Title: So is Medicom killing the Kubrick Star Wars line...???
Post by: Plasticlab on August 25, 2012, 11:49 AM

Naw man, waiting is half the fun. Medicom likes it this way and to be honest so do I. Gives collectors time to catch up.

I thought they give out new info in July Aug for the new series and it's Sept already.
Was looking forward to news of a Bespin series, but to tell the truth I'm losing interest with all this hush hush nonsense.
I'm thinking the BAF is going to be the demise of this line, I'd rather just have 9 new figures.
It must be costing them to much to produce and they could just scrap the line instead of going back to the original 6 and chases.
Just a thought...

Episode 7 kubs coming 2015?

Anyway now Disney own Star Wars they may not renew the contract with Medicom (Assuming it hasn't already expired).

It looks like they've retired the kubrick line and just moved everything over to bearbrick repaints.

i dont know about Disney ending it, they colab frequently with Medicom. I'm hoping for an awesome 2013

So, is there any chance that the reason Medicom has not produced more Star Wars Kubes is that the Disney deal was in play and they were either told to wait or wanted to wait to see how things panned out?  Probably one has nothing to do with the other, but just curious if someone more in the know thinks there is any link to this.  It would be nice if the reason they let the line die off was something like this versus just poor planning or a lack of interest.

I don't think there is any chance of that.

Historically, Medicom has been more than secret on upcoming releases other than the reveals at shows (or once in the Insider). Patience Padawans

Remember that Medicom hasn't released any new kubricks for months now not just Star Wars. In fact since the Real Steel kubs came out I think it's just been repaints/reissues/carded Star Wars kubs.

That's true, though all of the deluxe announcements were many months in advance of the release.  If they do have something coming, that means we're still not going to see product until next Summer at the earliest.  Blech.

I think the license expired and everything was on hold for the deal. I should think Disney would let Medicom have it's SW license back since they have a license with Disney and the Be@rbrick line anyway.
I'm sure well see more SW than ever before. Seems Disney is after Hasbro too...
I don't collect Hasbro stuff but has anyone seen a drop off in new modern stuff being produced?
I will be sad if it's over, really wanted more ESB figures and a clone wars animated line but nothing we can do but wait and see.
Watch the fakes start pouring into the market now... I'd wouldn't mind seeing a good fake of a ATST driver. 6 for $50 please...

I got tired of waiting, so I figured out how to get a message to Medicom.  Will see if they come back with any useful information - I hope the language barrier is not an issue.  I got a good chuckle from the auto-reply message:

Looks like Kubricks in general may have gone the way of the dodo.  On Medicom's site, all you see announced over the last year or so (?) are Be@rbricks, apart from the odd Star Wars con exclusive like the Imperial Guard guy.

Earlier this month I made mention at kubricknation that the Winter Wonder Festival 2013 was set for 10th Feb and no sign of of a carded exclusive.

Each WonderFest (both Summer and Winter) has had a carded exclusive Star Wars kub for the last 3 years but there was nothing this Fest, which has obviously now come and gone.

I did a search around the blogs for photos of Medicom's booth but the best I could come up with was from Medicom's (http://www.medicomtoy.tv/blog/?p=19040) own site:

Not exactly the best pictures but it's my impression there were no kubricks shown. Usually you can capture a glimpse of them (as well as the be@rbricks) in front of or behind the RAH's on their respective blogs and forums.

BBTS (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/list.aspx?list=11843) also has all the WonderFest 2013 exclusives to purchase and only RAH's from Medicom.

Not completely on topic, but I just did a search of sold auctions on ebay. Definately some surprises there. Hoth soldier chase can still be had around $150, but the only hammerhead on the list sold for $500  :o.  I think they underproduced the last couple of series, but that hasn't caused a corresponding jump in the price of the basic sets from those series.

An eensy-weensy, teeny-tiny bit of hope for the future...?

I sent out a "what's up with Star Wars Kubricks" email to the Medicom Press/PR rep and got this response:

Quote
We are sorry but we cannot give out informations of our future projects.
However, the Star Wars KUBRICK is an ongoing project so we have plans releasing items

I sent back a follow-up to ask whether the 'ongoing project' items were actually NEW or just more old figures on new cards, but I'm not expecting much more than the first line above as a response.  :-\

I wrote in and asked a bunch of questions yesterday, as I tend to do every 90 days or so. Here is the latest from Medicom, which is the same story they've been shilling for a few years now.  The line sure seems dead - I wish they would just confirm it or offer some explanation as to why there's been such a gap.

12/13/2013:

Dear customer,

Thank you for your inquiry.
We have not released a new item but the series is not discontinued.
We are sorry but we cannot disclose any further information.
Thank you for your understanding.

Not that this is any great surprise but the 2014 Winter Wonder Festival was held in Japan on Sunday and no Kubricks were to be seen let alone Star Wars.

These (http://ameblo.jp/medicomtoyblog/entry-11751494911.html) are Medicom's list of exclusives for the event and yet again no carded exclusive to be found, repaint or otherwise.

Here (http://blog.bearbrickmania.com/2014/02/%E8%A1%8C%E3%81%A3%E3%81%A6%E3%81%8D%E3%81%BE%E3%81%97%E3%81%9F%EF%BC%81%E3%83%AF%E3%83%B3%E3%83%80%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%A7%E3%82%B9%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%83%90%E3%83%AB-2014-%E5%86%AC.html) are pictures from Medicom's booth from the event provided by be@rbrickmania.

I'd take the demise of SW Kubricks and Kubricks in general with more ease if Medicom just released those Ghostbusters *sigh*

At the very least if there turns out to be no Ep7 Kubricks we can all stop holding our collective breaths for news on any new Kubricks and accept the series as dead.

I'm pulling these figures out of the air but at this stage I'm betting on 60/40 there will be Ep7 Kubs. 60% yes, because they would be mad not to get in on that merchandising bonanza and 40% no, because the last couple of years have shown us Medicom aren't interested in putting out new Kubricks.

Lol. We're going to hold you to that. Pics please when you're done.

It does seem that Medicom does still hold Star Wars license as they're still releasing various action figure, haven't seen and be@rbricks in a while though, but I'd be stunned if we saw any more kubricks.

... But to rub salt in to our collective wounds here's what I imagine we'd see if they did a series 11 for The Force Awakens (none of that DX business):

Hypothetical Series 11 - The Force Awakens - December 2015:

Regular Figures
_ Kylo Ren - 1:12
_ New Stormtrooper - 3:12
_ Finn - 3:12
_ Rey - 2:12
_ Poe Dameron - 2:12
_ BB-8 - 1:12

Chase Figures
_ Finn in Stormtrooper Uniform - 2:48
       - Found in regular Finn Box
_ Chrometrooper w/ cape - 1:96
       - Found in Stormtrooper box. 1 per master case, but only 1/2 of master cases contain him
_ Don't know, maybe whoever Andy Serkis character is or a returning OT cast member like Luke - 1:96
       - 1 per master case, but only 1/2 of master cases contain him

theres no way that Jedi Mickey won't be a chase. We'll probably even get a 400% version.

Guys, I plan to finalize my Kubrick display around June/July, so rest assured that once I have finalized my collection, Medicom will announce something new to make me redo everything.  Trust me, we'll have the new ones announced by August.   ;)

TFA DX Series 1 I hear you get to build Rey's fudgsicle speeder.

Now give me my Rebels line damn it!

Ezra 2:12
Kanan 3:12
Zeb 2:12
Hera 1:12
Stormtrooper 3:12
Chopper 1:12

Chase Figures
- Inquisitor in Kanan box 2:48
- Stormtrooper Commander in Stormtrooper box 1:96
- Sabine found in Hera boxes in 1/2 of master cases
- Agent Kallus in Chopper boxes in 1/2 of master cases

Clone Wars went on for what 5 -6 years and.... yeah, I like your optimism ;)

Also making Sabine a chase - Cruel. What are you, Lego?

Good call on the speeder. I wanted to move away from DX because we get an extra chase instead of just big, expensive half empty boxes but it's all a pipe dream any way.

I didn't realise BB-8 was half the size of R2 (which in kubricks is not very much to scale) so I'm going to move it to an accessory for it's 'owner' sort of like that crappy hovering droid that came with the black pauldron sandtrooper in DX 3.

That opens up a new slot and I'm going to put in old man Han Solo.

Regular Figures
_ Kylo Ren - 1:12
_ New Stormtrooper - 3:12
_ Finn - 3:12
_ Rey - 2:12
_ Poe Dameron - 2:12
_ Old Man Han Solo - 1:12

*BB-8 is an accessory included with one of the above kubricks.

Chase Figures
_ Finn in Stormtrooper Uniform - 2:48
       - Found in regular Finn Box
_ Chrometrooper w/ cape - 1:96
       - Found in Stormtrooper box. 1 per master case, but only 1/2 of master cases contain him
_ Old Luke - 1:96
       - Found in Rey box. 1 per master case, but only 1/2 of master cases contain him

Any suggestions. I prefer making Luke a chase. I feel like Solo has a bigger on screen role in this movie and I have no idea who or what Andy Serkis is playing he could be playing a Gonk Droid.

...In that case yes, make it a Gonk Droid.  :D

the other chase will be a bloodied plane crash Harrison Ford... the force is strong with that one.

Not the same injury but you reminded me of this.

Different type of minifigure than kubricks, but it got a chuckle out of me and is very cleverly done.
