Title: Disney Infinity
Post by: Phrubruh on January 22, 2013, 03:15 PM
This June, Disney is coming out with a Skylanders type game but based on Disney characters. You buy the figures and then can use them in the game. The game is basically a virtual playset for the action figures. You can fight enemies, build buildings, push buttons, drive vehicles and move figures from virtual playset to playset.

Now that makes me think that since Disney owns both Marvel and Star Wars I can see this virtual playset-type game being applied to future Star Wars figures.

Since Disney was able to incorporate many characters from the entire Marvel universe into Disney Infinity, I wonder if they will be able to incorporate characters from the Star Wars universe into the game.

Is this some sort of stand alone system or does it work with an X-box/Playstation?

Now I may have to start collecting those things.

Version 2.0 was available for PS4, PS3, Xbox1, Xbox360, WiiU, Android Tablet/Phone, iPad/iPhone, Windows 8 tablets, and PC.

Starter pack (like the box shown) includes the game/disc, the figure base, and 3 game pieces (either 3 figures or 2 figures and some sort of power-up thingy), but you still need a system on which to play it.

We've got an original hand me down Wii that needs to be replaced with something better.  Now I have an excuse.

Any thoughts on the best system to get for kids currently aged 5-8 that will work with this?

We've got a pile of Wii games, but if WiiU stinks, I'm open to making a change.

The WiiU should do nicely for 5-8 year olds. There isn't a lot available for that age group on the Xbox one or ps4.

Well, unless you're going to buy a ton of games, I'd absolutely go with an XBox One or Playstation.  We got the XBox one for Christmas and both the kids love to play it.  We started off with Disney 2.0, which has a create mode (think Minecraft, but not just cubes of stuff) for all kinds of custom playhouses.  I think it came with a Dance-off sort of game as well.  Then we grabbed a few Lego-based games - Sam's favorite is the Marvel Super Heroes.  His latest acquisition was the Skylanders Trap Force, which is a lot like Infinity where you have to buy the characters to play them.  This has the added element of buying traps to capture bad guys in - then you can play the bad guys in the game.  I've heard good things about the PS4 as well - I don't think you can go wrong with either of those.  You're also coming in at a time where ou might be able to get the games/system/figures for a lot less than last year.

My boys already started their Christmas list for this one.  They were also loving the fact that Disney confirmed they will be releasing an Age of Ulton based playset with Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron figures.

Has anyone gotten this release yet and started playing.  The boys were starting their Christmas lists and I was curious just how good it is.

I also noticed on Best Buy today that there are some Infinity 3.0 Expansion Packs.  I think they are still pre-order, but one pack looked like it was a cart-style racing game that utilized the Infinity characters.

My son got it for his birthday.  So far we have Ahsoka, Ben, Anakin, and Sabine.  All the characters are fun with new moves and loads of new playset options.  Our favorite is a random dispenser that gives out an enemy, new vehicle, landscape change, etc.  Also fun to see captain America battle Obi-Wan. Totally worth getting if you're a fan of the 2.0 stuff.

I have the twilight set and the Rise against the empire set. I love playing them-I'm still a big ole kid. Have Vader+tron characters and Ronin,Loki+ heros that came with the sets. I have alot of fun playing/ creating.

Just a few more days and Maul, Ultron, Hulkbuster release. Trying to build villains/fringe group. Excited about TFA set too.

Picked up the formerly PS4 bundle exclusive Boba Fett Infinity figure at Target yesterday.  Can't wait to fire this up with the kids on our Xbox this weekend.

Snatch those Star Wars figurines up while you can.

My kids are crushed.  They love playing those games.  We still have our Wii hooked up so they can play the 1.0 version.  Thankfully all they still need is the Black Panther figure for 3.0 to have all of the characters, so it shouldn't be too hard to get a hold of.

The problem is they overproduced the figures and they didn't sell. A lot of the later waves never made it to stores. Sound familiar?

I picked this up at Christmas for the kids so haven't followed it closely for that long.  However I recently picked up a ton of version 2 figures on sale at Target and what I noticed is that the assortments at Target seemed to kind of suck.  Maybe it was just a warehouse clearance deal for 2.0 figures, but it was only a handful of different characters and some of them were pretty lame.  I went to a few different Targets hoping to find a different selection but they were all basically the same.  The kids and I ended up getting pretty frustrated because they wanted a few figures (Sully and Beymax) that just weren't available.  Maybe these came out years ago and are no longer available, but the kids got frustrated that they were shown on the cardback and not available.

Yeah, Target has been blowing out the 2.0 to make room for the newest 3.0 sets (Zootopia, Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, etc).

Sully was 1.0 and Baymax was 2.0 so low chance of finding them at Target these days.  Both of those are on Amazon though (Sully $8; Baymax $10-11 usually).

Amazon is where I've been getting a lot of our figures.  Pretty cheaply if you are patient.  Right now for example - Light-Up Saber Kylo Ren for $7.59 (http://amzn.to/25m8aHh) if you are a prime member.  I've picked up a lot of Infinity figures for the kids in the $6-8 range at Amazon.

Since Disney killed the Infinity line, we should start seeing close outs of these figures for pretty cheap.
