Title: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 2
Post by: Jeff on February 9, 2013, 05:24 PM
Looks like Wave 2 will be...
- Mara Jade Skywalker
- Stormtrooper
- R2-D2
- Pablo-Jill
- Luminara Unduli
- 41st Clone Trooper

I think that the Stormtrooper and the 41st Clone are actually the Sandtrooper and 212th Clone since neither the stormtrooper or 41st were part of Legacy.

Wave 2 is a hell of a lot more solid IMO, but still neither wave's a complete pick-up for me at this point.  I'm kinda clone repainted out.

Pablo's my big want from Wave 2 though.  I've wanted a couple of him actually since we saw pics last year.

I already forgot what the R2-D2 was supposed to be. Does the dome pop off and Kenny Baker is inside?

Hopefully this is the case. I was actually very excited for the Sand Trooper, and the 212th Clone had nice paint apps. Either way this sounds like a decent wave, and I'll probably pick up all six figures plus some extra troopers.

The 41st Clone Trooper is definitely a bit of a question mark.  They appear on Coruscant in the standard phase II armor with grey markings.  But then they're also on Kashyyyk in the camo Scout Trooper type armor with Gree.

Since Luminara is in the wave, and she also appears on Kashyyyk in ROTS, one can certainlly assume that this might be a link that would suggest the Kashyyyk troopers.  Especially considering the recent re-release of the AT-AP.  But I guess we have to wait and see!

Nice figures, and a little more exciting than Wave 1.  I guess it just doesn't seem too exciting since we've already seen these before, and even then they were a lot of "oh, we've had that before".  I definitely don't mind resculpts of previously done figures, I think I like them more than a lot of people here actually, but I think they could have mixed things up a little more with these waves.  Re-use some of the droid factory stuff, but maybe sprinkle in a couple of things we haven't seen before too, but then again, I suppose things may have been rushed a bit with all the movie shifts/etc.  Again, I'll pick up some (all the OT ones, and some others), but it will be easier to pass on others with no build a droid or vinty packaging.  I don't really mind the Black Series packaging either though, it is fine for filler until vintage hopefully returns ;).

Hmm, the Jedi and Luminara are my definite pick ups, and probably the Stormtrooper. You can never have enough. Though I bet it winds up being that black pauldron Sandtrooper we saw originally, which I'll pick up one or two. Amazing what a new gun and droid will do to get you to buy a figure.

May be the case.

But, few were entirely happy with the short 41st Clone in Kashyyyk armor, so it would not be surprising they have a do-over planned. If the two realistic Clone wars releases have been booted out (it's not clear), that leaves the other 18 revealed releases from BAD plus one.

Or it's a *snooze* landing platform repaint of phase 2.

Looks like I was wrong. With the Stormtrooper and Sandtrooper both showing up in computer system I guess they really are going to be a Stormtrooper and 41st Clone.

Wish the new stormie and sandtrooper spot removable helmets and more detail for the armour than previous versions.

As I didnīt buy TLC yavin Luke I will buy black series one.

Biker scout perhaps depicts a different paint job; this figure seems to wear grey bands on his thighs.

Is that new or one of the old sculpts?  The gun on the right looks new at least...  I can't tell if the sculpt of the figure is different at all though from some of the Sandtroopers we've gotten lately.  :-\

Isn't it just the Dewback Sandtrooper, minus the Sandtrooper gear?  Looks that way to me.  Here's a pic of that one for comparison (http://www.rebelscum.com/photo.asp?image=/TLC/Creatures/Dewback/LC-793.jpg).

It still doesn't look like any Stormtrooper from the movies, IMO. They just cannot get the helmet right for some reason.

I didn't think it looked new but wasn't sure...  Same ole same ole...  I prefer the clean Sandtroopers...  You got more gear thus more value.  More troops are nice but for $10+ you seriously need to put some new in there for anyone to care.  Ball jointed wrists or at least a lot of rehash weapons n gear.

There's now a 41st Elite Clone (http://www.forum.starwars-figuren.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=526) photo... and man is it screwed up. Missing gray on lower legs, shoulder bells, belt, ab section, hand plates. I pray it gets addressed before release.

It's not production, so there's hope, but little.  I wouldn't be shocked at all if it was deco left off for cost reasons.   ::)  That's out of control.

For $10+ a pop, there sure is a whole lot of "just a tad different/fixed up".

Not trying to excuse this clone, since it looks like crap, but maybe Hasbro was using a shot with an unfinished digital model or bright lighting as reference? In any case it's bizarre since they got the paint apps spot on for the Legacy/Build-A-Droid release. Hopefully this Black Series version is corrected before release.

I see Yoda's News has posted some loose shots of the 41st Clone and Stormtrooper (https://www.facebook.com/YodasnewsPage/photos_stream) which confirm the paint apps on the 41st are missing and not just washed out by the flash or something.  Stormtrooper still looks like the Dewback Sandie minus gear to me. Not sure if it's got the removable helm like the VC41 did.   :-\

Also, the Germans have updated with carded shots of Pablo, Mara, and Luminara (http://www.forum.starwars-figuren.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=526) now.  I think Pablo is going to be my favorite from this wave, he's a great upgrade.

Agreed on Pablo...  He's awesome, and long overdue IMO.  I want 2 of him actually.

I figure the Hasbro official pics don't always match up to production so I'm willing to still give them some leeway, but at this point I think this was probably all cost-saving or simple factory laziness...  The way the Legends and Mission Series are described makes me think quality's taking a nosedive this year with Hasbro.  Not that it was perfect the last 3 or 4 years either.

I tried several times to get conformation on any newness on the Stormtrooper. I kept missing the guy who new. Daryl eventually took it out of the case for me and we both gave it a look. To my eye, there looked to be nothing new what so ever.

It's a nice enough figure...  I'm fine with it as-is.  I think the Stormies we've gotten have been pretty ok for the most part.  A flaw here or there for sure, but nothing major enough to me to care.

I still love that 2007 black pauldroned clean sandtrooper.  That thing's my fav.  Spacetrooper a close 2nd.

I've been thinking the same thing Jesse - order two cases of this wave from EE and just pick up the figures I need from Wave one when they hit the stores. What does that mean - I'm left with just finding two each of Padme and Yavin Celebration Luke?

Wow they are ALREADY shooting themselves in the foot with these cases - the 2nd wave should have ZERO carry-forwards from the previous wave and just been this:

2x Stormtrooper
2x 41st Elite Clone Trooper
2x Mara Jade
2x Pablo Jill
2x Luminara Unduli
2x R2-D2 (AOTC)

If this line is for collectors and the 5POA line is for kids - stop worrying about the collector line having a kid-friendly assortment in the case.

Post by: Jesse James on July 25, 2013, 07:02 PM
I can appreciate the beefing up on the troopers in a case...  I mean that's kind of collector-oriented, but Luke and Padme are all I need so I'm in the same boat.  Cancelling Wave 1 I think, ordering Wave 2...  Makes just more sense for me at this point.

I can order Luke and Padme off Amazon even, or just find them at stores...

The one thing though, there's gaps in these waves for sure...  I don't know that things will pile up much at retail IF there's demand.  If there isn't as much demand as collectors feel there is for the line as a whole, these will back up fast and you'll see it.  I think Hasbro's doing some experimenting right now with collector 3.75" in general...  I think they're looking to see if people care.   :-\

The troopers I think are a mistake. If the VC Clone Trooper is any indication, appetite in general for these has waned. I could be wrong, but I have zero interest in any of them. The carry forwards in general don't make sense, Biggs most of all.

[Luke] I care. [/Luke] I hope Hasbro doesn't look at it like that.  I care about the line, but being a pick and choose collector (and there are different types of collectors out there), there isn't much of interest for me in these upcoming 2 waves.  Nothing excites me there.  But that's just me.  I think my focus is slowly turning towards OT-only (or I guess I've heard it called the Classic Trilogy now).  There are so many interesting characters to do: Cantina guys, Jabba's goons, Lando, Yoda, Han (Yavin, Carbonite, Bespin Capture, Thaw), Leia (Endor, Yavin) that could have been better choices.  Granted, these waves have mostly AotC figures to celebrate the now cancelled 3D release, which isn't their fault.  These were long in the pipeline.  But I guess I wished they had better choices for OT figures.  I understand that Biggs will be out along with his X-Wing, so no complaints there.  And army builders move, but since I don't build, but it's another figure I already have (so more for those that want them). I guess I should be happy they intermingled some OT goodness alongside of the prequel stuff, but I wish there would have been someone there that I would be clamoring all over for and anxious to get go hunting for.
Title: Re: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 2
Post by: Jesse James on July 25, 2013, 07:43 PM
Not a ton in Wave 1 appeals to me...  I'm getting it all, but I'm not ecstatic about any one figure in it really...  That said, Wave 2, far more appealing I thought, and so I cancelled Wave 1 pre-order I had (glad I put it in later than most) and pre-ordered Wave 2 instead...  I'll track Luke and Padme down...

And sadly, if I didn't find either, I don't think I give a ****.

The desire to push the PT stuff that was largely there because of AOTC3D and it's cancellation makes me just really hope they're able to see past these first two waves.  I think 3 looks better, and I'm hoping 4 is better than that.

Truly though, wish they'd start getting off PT figures for the collector line and start getting on the OT wagon.  Aliens, army builders, main updates...  Even if it's minor updates, main updates would be appreciated.  I'd take a brown coat Han that could ride the Taun Taun, an all new Endor Han (I hate that figure), a new Hoth Luke, a BE Leia, a new Tatooine Luke, a new Endor Luke and Leia, a new Ceremony Han, Ceremony Leia, Bespin Han with a separate belt and holster strap for his leg, a similar change to ANH Han, an all new Carbonite Han with a light-up block (non-melty) w/floaty stand, A more articulated Boba Fett, Bespin Lando w/a removable cape...

All that, alone, would be more interesting to me.  And that's just main characters.  Forget about ANY Rebel Trooper head or uniform variation, Imp Officers, Cantina weirdos, Mos Eisley Human goons, Jabba's Palace and Barge...  OT needs more focus if they're clearly focusing one line to kids, one not.  Don't get me wrong, I like some PT stuff now and again too (Office Palpy, Wookiees, Clone Commander updates if they go all out).  I just need a little less of it.

I recently moved, and chose to scale down the portion of my collection that I display to OT-only...and I have to say, it looks so much more slick. I'll still collect PT stuff, but I don't see myself displaying it for a while. I'm having a blast with the OT.

Same here.  I display stuff from both trilogies (although the majority of my PT vehicles/beasts are packed away), but like Jesse said, the clones really eat up space quickly - and I don't have anywhere near the armies many people do.  I've thought about trying to narrow the prequel stuff down to one shelf, but don't see how it is possible without packing a ton away.

Anyways, as far as Wave 2 goes...not too bad.  Nothing necessarily super exciting, but some nice figures included.  It just seems like much of the first two waves has lost something just because we've known about them for so long at this point, not that that should change the quality of the figures themselves.  I'm getting to the point with a lot of the prequel stuff (clones in particular) that the previous versions are "good enough" for me, and can't see myself buying a whole lot more, if any.

It is a clean version (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/TGuide2004/html/TBS/basic/TBS_09.html) of the TAC figure (TAC04) but without the flame base

Seems to me that my case at site sponsor EE (wink wink, nudge nudge...  use our links please) is processing.  Yay!

Now I need to look for a new head for Mara I guess.

This isn't the most awe-inspiring wave, and looks to me to clearly still have a touch of AOTC 3-D wishful thinking mixed in there, but still Pablo is awesome and that alone wins for me.

I'm cool with another Biggs too...  Can't have too many average height X-Wingers I always say, since there basically was only one ever made (Red 10...  in an Evolutions set, eons ago).  So I'm taking some Biggs figs here and there, but he's actually not been one of the "pegwarmers" of TBS I see...  Actually it's the Scout steals the show there.  Go figure right?  He's a great figure, but I see him the most...  Hell, sometimes he's the ONLY Wave 1 fig I see on pegs since TBS didn't hit too hard it seems.

Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to my case...  Glad I didn't buy Wave 1 and held my ground there.  Wise choice.  I was far more able to pick and choose that wave then.

I'm going to anxiously await a Wave 4 pre-order because I must have those!  Hell, that's a case I may order 2 of.  Wave 3, I'm sure I'll order as well because...  meh, why bother shopping at this point?

I read the bit over at YF about the head swap.  And that Black Widow head DOES look pretty good on the Mara Jade body.  But from an economic standpoint, you're still looking at putting another $10 or so into a figure that cost you about $10 already.  And that $10 is the CLEARANCE price on this particular Black Widow figure (the one on the Avengers light-up base).

I'm hoping that the Wave 1 carry-forwards in my Wave 2 case come with the fixed cardback/bubble issue.

I saw on another site that the Black Series figures cardbacks now have a coating on them (they didn't originally) and it's this new coating that fixes the issue with the adhesive properly attaching the bubbles.

Sorta makes sense if the adhesive used is intended to bond to some kind of clear coat on a card...  The satiny look maybe just wasn't conducive to bonding.  Weird, and never would've thought that would've been an issue, but I can see it.

My Black Series Wave 2 is in-hand as of this afternoon.  I love Pablo Jill, and I hope my order for a 2nd from Amazon goes through because, well, I like people with upside down faces.

I enjoy this guy...  The rest...  eh...  Lots of army builders in the wave including the repacks (I count Biggs as one.  Headswaps seem easy).

I'm pleased with the case order.  Looking forward to hopefully ordering Wave 3 and 4 soon too.  :-\

I've been trying to break down figures from Wave 2 (and Wave 1 repacks from my case since I held out on those) in our Reviews section...  Lately I've ignored it all together since I haven't been doing reviews in general but I was trying to just put together some quick (but similar to my old format) Pros/Cons and an Overall at the end.

Suffice it to say I think some stuff is getting a worse review than it should, and other things I think are being lambasted quite adequately around the collecting world...  Some of it, I've really hit the "who cares?" point with certain things...  Even when some things are wrong either the figure wasn't really asked for anyway or it's so minor that in the grand scheme it's hardly worth pointing out anymore.

I've come to the conclusion though, Hasbro is no longer giving collectors unlit saber hilts it seems, and Clones are something nobody should get their panties in a wad over because nobody but kids cares about them anymore I think.

At this stage the only ones we as adults seem to want are Commanders or maybe realistic incarnations of the Clones from The Clone Wars series.  The rest...  Wow is it easy not to care about Clones at this point.   :-\  Kinda sad how that came full circle since 2002.

Well Amazon still has not processed my order for Mara Jade. They won't give an estimate when the figure will ship. I have a feeling I'll see her warming the pegs around here before they get around to shipping her.

Got my two cases of Wave 2 from EE yesterday.

Don't mind the Mara Jade head sculpt as much as I thought I would. The hair is a bit ridiculous, but it is what it is...

Disappointing that they didn't fix the Clonetrooper.

The stars of the wave are Luminara and Pablo Jill. I am still getting at least two openers of all collector-quality 3.75" figures - so I'll definitely be on the look-out for another Pablo Jill to open. Not worried about Luminara though since she'll be in the Wave 3 case, which I also plan on ordering 2 of.

I had such high hopes for this line to be something DIFFERENT than what the Vintage line became where the only way to ensure I got the figures was to order by-the-case, two waves in and we're already there with the Black Series - maybe I'll be shocked, but there are WAY too many Biker Scouts, Biggs Darklighters, Anakin Skywalkers and Darth Vaders out there right now for many stores to be ordering any more - and of course all of these figures are shipping again in Wave 2 so Hasbro's stupidity is once again going to get them into trouble.

How hard is it to just have six figure waves and ship them at 2x per case? It's a collector line, why not package them with collectors in mind?

Got an email from amazon today asking if I wanted them to cancel my order for Mara Jade. The message indicated they were having trouble getting more and that they would only continue to try if I told them to do so. Of course I said continue trying, originally I was supposed to have the fig on 10/28 according to my pre-order notice. Either Amazon didn't order sufficient amounts for demand or distribution has been screwed again. Of course it would occur on the only figure in the first 2 waves that I wanted, sigh...

very odd - on August 30th I pre-ordered through Amazon Mara, Luminara and Pablo.  Then I ordered in a 2nd order on September 2nd another Luminara, Pablo, Mara, and 2x Stormtroopers.

I had to renew both pre-orders since they were taking so long like others have mentioned here.

Today I received word from Amazon that for my first order Luminara has shipped but the other two (Pablo and Mara) still have not.  Luminara should be here Friday and the other two are slated for....  sometime between 12/31 and 1/16/14.......

I am not thinking that date is a real date, but who knows???

I haven't been looking...  Wave 2, as a case, was really nothing but Pablo I wanted an extra of.  I renewed an order at Amazon for him, and if I get him great, and if not, I'm sure I'll get him down the road somehow.

No clue on Amazon's deal with these...  Possible Hasbro had a production issue, or something or other.  I'd like a 2nd Pablo but I wouldn't be shocked if he turned up in a Wave 4 case assortment.

The stores in my area are clogged with Wave 1 Black Series and Vintage Series hold-overs, so I have very little hope of Wave 2 showing up at my local Target stores. Like Jesse, I'm just looking for an extra Pablo Jill. I also wouldn't mind an extra R2-D2 and a couple more Stormtroopers either.

I went ahead and ordered two cases of Wave 3 today - so I'll be good on the Stormtroopers, but the Pablo Jill and R2 figures, I'll have to get elsewhere.

I found Wave 2 at my local Target (in Raleigh NC) this morning. I picked up Pablo, Mara, R2-D2, and the Stormtrooper. I held off on Luminara and the Clone since I plan to order a case for Wave 3, and I have no desire for extras of those two. I also left behind the Wave 1 carry-forwards, which should ensure this particular Target will not restock for another two months.
Title: Re: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 2

I haven't been in a Target in a long time actually.

K-Mart, they got what seemed like 3 replenishments of Wave 1, and sold through most of the first 2 and the 3rd have sort of hit a wall.

Wal-Mart, when they got Wave 1, seemed to be behind the curve of TRU and K-Mart, and the same with the few Target stores here that got Wave 1 eventually.  At TRU and K-Mart they sold ok, then they got to the other two stores and nothing seemed to move much...  Some Targets here still never got Wave 1 though due to TVC hang-arounds because they refuse to change the DPCI and clearance TVC.

Clearanced, I'd probably buy more TPM figures for fodder like lil Ani, or Naboo dudes.

more weird stuff from my Amazon orders:

from order #1:
Pablo just shipped by himself - expected Friday.
Mara is still left as not shipped from this order and still is not due to me until the end of the year...

From order #2:
Luminara and one stormtrooper shipped and they are expected friday - they might be packed in with Pablo above as Amazon does do that (combine shipments)
the other stormtrooper and Pablo from this order are preparing for shipment and are expected to be delivered between 11/18 and 11/22
Mara from this order also has the expected delivery for the end of the year.

update:  well, they just shipped that other Stormtrooper by itself without Pablo....  Pablo is preparing for shipment all by himself.

on a good note Luminara from my first order arrived today (it was expected for Friday I believe).  She was shipped in a small box all by herself and is in excellent condition

Not very efficient/cost effective shipping if you ask me

update part 2:  now my two Maras are scheduled to come soon.  One between the 19-23rd the other between the 20-23rd...   ???

Noticed that Amazon had most of Wave 2 listed as in-stock and available with free shipping - so I grabbed the additional Pablo Jill, R2-D2, Stormtrooper and 41st Elite Corps Clonetrooper I wanted from this wave. Don't need to worry about Mara or Luminara since they are in my Wave 3 cases I ordered from EE - in fact, I'll have an extra of both of those....  :-\

I just don't have a lot of faith that this wave is going to show up in my stores locally. Too much Wave 1 on all the pegs...

41st Clone trooper (black series from rots)

This Black Series Figure has less color than the former rots figure,
the 2013 figure only spots longer limbs, bigger removable helmet,
no back antenna, no painted soles.

Where the rots figure shows a more intensive all in all paint job.

http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/galleries/2013/Review_41stEliteCorpsTBS/pages/Review_41stEliteCorpsTBS18.html

Hasbro needs to keep the identity of each representation of a saga character,
they usually fail in the tendence "to compensate one new paint application by suppressing a previous one".

It is the similar case with OT storm troopers: when Hasbro "corrects the helmet", they suppress the dots on stomach armour and even the paint for the soles.

How many bucks would be the cost for an all in all well painted stormie? (stomach dots, helmet with blue, light blue, grey and silver, grey squares on ankles and always black soles)

I donīt think it would be as expensive as the build factory Purge Trooper. Even more, Hasbro could made this figure common, not rare. Thus they can stop the reign of speculator selllers and bring order to the galaxy. :)

So my Mara Jade came in from Amazon today. For the carded collector, packaging will be a problem - the figure shipped in a box barely large enough to fit the figure. The card was all bent out of shape and the bubble was popping off. Since I'm a loose collector that doesn't bother me, but I'm sure it would others. On the plus side, the hair/forehead issue has been resolved - the hairline comes further down the head and makes Mara look more normal. Overall it's a nice figure, not what we voted for but I'll definitely take it over not having Mara Jade at all.

Unfortunately, I didn't think of taking pics until after I finished peeling the bubble off the card. The bubble was about 50% off the card when I pulled it out of the package which is the same type they use to ship DVD box sets. The card itself was bent at the top as it looked like the figure was jammed into the package.

It seems that Hasbro has recognized their good in the paint apps for the 41st Elite Clone, because it looks like there's a running change (http://www.forum.starwars-figuren.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=716) of this particular Trooper on the way with the correct markings.

I would say that could be attributed to the fact she was relatively easy to obtain online rather than having to chase her down at retail. I'm sure the hair/facial deco didn't help the matter either. I would also say that since this is a 3rd version of this outfit, not the one "promised" in the Fans' Choice poll, collectors are just disinterested in the latest rehash.

I would also speculate that with the possibility of her being erased from Star Wars history by episode VII, she is no longer a priority to many.

What Jayson said is what I figured too...

I don't think collectors would care about her being "erased" because you can't take people's memories ultimately.  I suppose a few might be that upset about that possibility to where they'll not buy the toy, but I really feel like that was something blown out of proportion.  :-\  That whole thing just had me rolling my eyes I guess.  People freaking out...  like books were being burned and things just simply wouldn't exist anymore.

I figure she was pretty easy to get...  Leading up to Xmas she was not hard at all to pick up on Amazon or HTS.  That's just what I figure anyway.  That and perhaps tired of the character ultimately.  It happens, especially in the niche that is the collector market at this point.  :-X

Good points by all, thanks...and wasn't she carried forward in Wave 3 as well?

I don't think any of the BS figures have been very easy to find at retail after Wave 1, so I guess I figured there would be more "heat" for that stuff in general.

Online, she was...  all of Wave 2 and 3 were really easy to get online for sale prices and free shipping usually, except perhaps Plaguis, though I got him from HTS for cheap too.  Took the patience of waiting for your order to come in was all, but wasn't a big deal.  Saved a lot by not having to buy by the case, plus using a coupon code.

Most of those figures from 3 and 4 ultimately sat...  But online.  Walking into a store and getting them, not so much.  That's retail's fault though.

I had gotten the Mara Jade Skywalker figure earlier this year and she's awesome.
