Fan of the figures or not, I think it's something any adult fan of action figures ought to see and consider supporting.
-
Nice, was hoping someone would post that here. I find the whole things amusing, but only insofar as it is likely to fail. I would be super bummed if they ever actually stopped carrying adult collectibles.
Maybe she should be more worried about those spandex-clad steroid-shooting wrestler action figures.

When I saw the report on the news that someone was protesting over "Breaking Bad" action figures being on the pegs at TRU I just had to shake my head. Because the moral outrage police are at it once again.
I get it that they (concerned parents) may have objections to figures from "Breaking Bad" because Walter White was a meth dealer / gangster. I think we can universally agree that drug dealers are bad. But the packages are clearly labeled with the appropriate age recommendations. So what happens if TRU actually DOES pull Breaking Bad figures? Where will the line be drawn next? I'm worried about the slippery slope that would follow if TRU relents here.

Well the Breaking Bad figures are gone from TRU.com, and my local store didn't have any on the pegs this morning (I actually wanted to check if "meth" was mentioned on the package... I know the accessory is hidden behind the insert). It would appear that "they" have already won. I agree 100% that this is a slippery slope, and it's scary how quickly this spread thanks to social media and mis-informed sensationalized "news" stories.
Hopefully TRU takes this opportunity to re-evaluate placement of the "adult toys". I think placement near the electronics section (where I can grab a copy of GTA or Evil Within... go figure) may be more appropriate and would hopefully minimize the chance of something like this happening again down the road.
-
It's incredibly stupid. On top of being with all the other adult figures like aliens and predators and Freddy and Jason and such, it doesn't actually advertise drugs at all, as many have said, the "Meth" accessory is hidden behind the insert. Where do you draw the line? Ninja turtles have swords and other violent weapons, should they be removed from shelves? GI Joes have guns and terrorists, does buying a Cobra Commander mean advocating terrorism? Girl dolls are dressed very sexualized with unrealistic proportions, should we boycott those too?
Whats next? Am I gonna start being denied my Cantina Aliens cuz some crazy mom finds out those little plastic cups they have on them are filled with a ficticious alcoholic beverage? I suppose we might as well kiss Han Solo figures good bye as well, drug smuggler that he is. And forget ever getting you're dead Padme and extra crispy Owen and Beru....And while we're wasting all this time saving their children from a terrible action figure they probably don't give two tosses about, being that they're just boring old dude action figures that no kid would probably be interested in anyway, lets instead teach them a very important lesson! That if you see something you don't like, just gripe and yell and scream until everyone caves in and gives you what you want. Cuz that's good parenting. But I digress...
-
Yeah, the Breaking Bad figures were either pulled or someone bought them all (speculating). There were tons of them a week ago and none today.... and they hadn't been moving at all.
I'm surprised there's no outcry against Slave Leia. I mean scantily clad, wearing a chained collar and the slave part is rather ambiguous. And what about Star Wars' own death stick dealer from 11-12 years ago?
But yeah, there's one aisle that is dedicated to adult toys (or should be). My TRU has all these Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Firefly, ReAction stuff with Transformers. Still, what kid would be interested in a hazmat guy and he wouldn't know about the meth bit in relation to the show unless his parents allow him to watch it. I still laugh that the Mom in question professes to love the show, too.

That's one of the worst parts about this whole thing... nothing on the package advertises the meth/drug connection, so the only way a kid would know what the character is about is if they were watching the show... what has happened to common sense?
-
Grand Theft Auto, swords, guns, laser pistols... nearly every boys toy in that store is violent or offensive somehow, to someone.
I hope TRU stands their ground on this.

Sounds like that mom needs some toys of her own, and to chill out.

The terrorists have won: Pulled (http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/toys-r-us-pulls-breaking-bad-action-figures-after-petition-n231146)

It's very disturbing how easy a victory that was....

@toysrus = Re: BB "Let's just say, the action figures have taken an 'indefinite sabbatical.'" (https://twitter.com/ToysRUs/status/524698863740125184)
Man, way to roll over TRU. ::)
Oh, and I like this from EE (http://news.entertainmentearth.com/2014/10/21/burned-face-gus-fring-for-the-adult-collector/). Timely ad. ;)
-
Thanks to a push from BB's Aaron Paul (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/10/23/aaron-paul-toys-r-us-breaking-bad-toys/), the KEEP BB on the shelves at TRU (https://www.change.org/p/toys-r-us-keep-breaking-bad-and-other-adult-collector-figures-on-tru-shelves) is up over 30k.
I'll guess that the figures will eventually come back, but not until all of this has died down and the big media won't notice. :P
-
No shock since we live in a society of spineless individuals. I really hate people. I signed the petition but i doubt toys r us will put them back in. I don't even buy those figures but its the first step of the collectors aisle going away.
-
So it's been a few weeks since the Breaking Bad figures were pulled. But what other adult figures are hanging in the same general space? How about Sons of Anarchy figures! Yeah, characters who are involved in organized crime, meth dealing and murder. Such a step up in socially acceptable action figures! ::)
-
Hey, SAMCRO isn't into meth, in fact anti-meth was a big part of early seasons... illegal gun-running and porn, sure, but no meth dealing. Oh, and a brief perion of drug muling for Mexican cartels. But no meth. ;)
-
I had no idea TRU was so PC about their figures. I guess this is a good time to place a few calls about the disgusting flesh-baring. underwear dolls they call "Wrestling Figures."
-
Football figures. That sport is way too violent... and demeaning. I mean, look at the ass-whooping the Bears got from the Packers. That has to be demoralizing to any kid Bears fan. Same might be applied to the Vikings since the Pack did the same to them.
Seriously speaking, all TV shows (cartoons and otherwise) have some sort of violence in them. Tom and Jerry, Looney Toons are violent at times and they have been on TV for years. Transfomers, Joes, SW all have guns, Batman movies have violence. Game of Thrones? You could list the seven deadly sins there and probably add another seven. Boys toys aren't the only ones: Barbie has its issues, Bratz. The solution isn't to ban all toys though.
I think if TRU wants to sell Breaking Bad and other collector focused toys, perhaps they need an 18+ section where only adults can go... just don't make them like the curtained room in some comic shops or cigar stores where you'd feel 'dirty' for going in there.
-
They should just have a whole separate section to sell these figures in, where you have to show ID to enter, and it should have big neon signs all over it that say, "ADULT TOYS" all over it... Outside could have the same thing too. Like right below the big Toys R Us sign could be a big neon blinking sign that says "ADULT TOYS" below it... blink blinking.
Someone will inevitably get confused and put Hex Bugs in there, but they'll figure it out eventually.

You have got to be ******* kidding me! ::)
Star Wars Action Figure Has Parents Furious (http://www.myfoxphilly.com/story/29539702/star-wars-action-figure-has-parents-furious)

Might actually clear the pegs now... Either because of complaints or people will hoard the Leias hoping the price will go up.
But, yeah, to complain now? That Leia has been sitting on that peg for almost two years.
-
Everybody needs to be offended by something. Ugh.
I like how this guy thinks it ahold be pulled because he does t want to see it. ProTip: don't look.
Still, this may be a brilliant campaign by Hasbro to sell this thing. The fact checker definitely got wrong that this is a poplar toy. Hardly.
-
I saw this posted on the SWAN Facebook page. Pardon me for copying and pasting my comments from there, but here are my thoughts on this "controversy":
When I bought the 6" Slave Leia figure at Target for myself LAST YEAR, I had my daughter with me. Mind you, she's a toddler. But I felt kind of self concious. And the cashier (female, btw) actually said something to me about the figure like "Ooooh, Leia's looking pretty powerful". I didn't quite know how to take that, personally. And frankly, I was a little surprised that Hasbro went with Slave Leia as their first 6" figure depiction of the character, but it's a look that is very much an accepted part of pop culture. I mean, the costume was the basis for a subplot point on the sitcom Friends after all! And there have been Slave Leia costume contests going on at conventions for years.
As for this article? It came out yesterday on the heels of SDCC. Star Wars was a VERY BIG story coming out of Comic Con, with lots of positive articles running about the panel which featured guess who: Carrie Fisher. If you pay attention to the news, you'll generally find a trend where there are usually some negative articles about some tangential aspect of a given big news story. The negative pieces generally aren't breaking any sort of hard-hitting news, but they do generate website hits and it might fill 2 minutes in a local newscast, like for this Fox 29 station in Philly. And if Fox 29 in Philadelphia is fishing for a story like this, it's probably an effort on the part of that station's News Director to pump up their ratings and social media profile.
The fact that this figure has been out for well over a year, or that the likeness of Leia is something that's been in pop culture for well over 30 years, very likely does not mean a thing to the News Director of Fox 29 in Philly or the reporter who put this piece together. Have they run pieces about the Funko action figures that depict Danaerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, who is featured in even more brutal scenes than Leia in the slave outfit? Not likely, since Fox 29's reporting is pretty superficial. And they almost certainly wouldn't get a comment from Hasbro because when they ran this piece since all of Hasbro's people were probably travelling back from SDCC. But if they can run a negative piece about a hot topic like Star Wars that leads to a ratings bump? Then they're probably all for it. The journalism and related facts don't matter to the people at Fox 29. And this is the kind of crap that I've come to expect from local news...even if Philly is among the top 10 TV markets in the country.
-

This is the problem with media anymore. There are no objective stories anymore... everything's told with a slant. Even ads do not adhere to what the product actually does (car ads about cars doing CG stunts on a crowded highway to get to a meeting on time (despite the small, brief disclaimers)). I didn't take journalism classes, but my language arts classes definitely taught me about the credibility of advertisement and journalism.

I love that the single dad who first complained about Leia wearing a chain around her neck is in fact WEARING A CHAIN AROUND HIS NECK. The figure is wearing a lot more than you'll find real people wearing at swimming pools and beaches across the country. I wonder what he thinks about skinny, trashy Barbie figures since they all have removable clothing. And that anchorwoman..."I'm glad I don't have to explain this to my kid." Because this would for sure be the only time your kid will wonder about revealing clothing. Best to just avoid talking to your kids about sensitive subjects. ::)
This is not news, Fox 29. Do some real reporting.
-
Again... How are machine gun toting villains, monsters, or steroid using wrestlers better toys for children than this?
-
>>"Its just a bit much for a child. So, no, I probably wouldn't give this to my 4-year-old and maybe not an 8-year-old," Tiffany Mahan said. "It's true to the scene, but I don't know if I would purchase this for my girls," added Allison Degarmo.
I guess this explains why it is a two year old peg warmer. Girls won't buy star wars!
-
Do kids buy into the $20 6" line anyway? I also would not buy an Xbox for my 4 or 8 year old daughter. Or an antique lamp. Or a TV. Or a lawnmower. Or anything that wasn't primarily intended for a 4 year old.
-
Or anything that wasn't primarily intended for a 4 year old.
Yeah, but to the complainers' defense, the box does say for ages 4+
-
The age rating is much more about safety than being age appropriate. So maybe Hasbro should re-think the age on the package.
Beyond that? This is a classic case of lazy parenting. *SPOILER ALERT * The imagery of Leia in the slave outfit has been around since 1983. The guy who complained to this station in Philadelphia is probably more concerned that this action figure might lead to him having what he perceives to be an uncomfortable conversation with his kids. And in the grand scheme of things, this one is pretty easy compared to what real life has in store for most people.
-

The price isn't an issue. Look at the Frozen toys, that's where the real money is going right now. Barbie's in whore costumes are A-OK though cuz it's dress up. Neither Tiffany nor Allison were ever going to buy the Leia figure for their daughter anyway and neither is Hasbro targeting them with the figure. Gawd. People are so effing stoopid.

This article really needs one of those "Trigger Warnings" all of the feminists demand nowadays.
