Title: Who Overpaid for Walmart 2-packs? Do you regret it?
Post by: Jim on September 22, 2003, 08:34 AM
Unfortuneately I just did but I did not regret it. I am hearing that these were a one shot item and once they are gone they are gone.  With the dozens of Walmarts that myself, friends and relatives have checked for in the last week, nothing was to be found.  So, being worried I would find none, I overpaid on ebay, like alot of other people are doing.  I paid roughly double for each set.  I could live with $10 each, since I was at least getting 2 figures.  Your thoughts?  Will you wait it out and see if they are released again?

I bought a set off of eBay for around $8 a piece shipped which I thought was pretty reasonable.  I do not regret it either because I drove around forever and a day trying to get them and struck out.  I just don't have the time to devote to hunting as much as I'd like or the patience for prices to go down either on eBay...

I haven't found these in stores yet, but I'm not going to let the scalpers win just yet.  I am trying to acquire these through trades, or to at least buy them from people in the different Star Wars related forums.  I hate scalpers, and buying from them just encourages them to continue doing their scalping.   >:(

Jim,

Where in MA are you? I'm down in SE MA and found several sets of the two packs. I own probably 12-15... Yup they actually hung around here for a little at one Wally.

I did a show in NJ this weekend (I work pt time for Yestertoys) and saw a guy there selling the two packs at $15 a piece and believe it or not he sold every one he had. Sad... but who's to blame really...

As far as the one shot deal it's the truth. Once Wally has no more that's it for them...

If you can get them for $10/each on eBay, I say go for it.  This 2 pack is worth $10 anyhow since it's 2 figures @ $5/each x2 = $10.

Most people really need to hunt a ton of Wally's to find these anyhow.  My WalMart didn't even have the display left, and the manager said that the clone 2 packs were "all sold out" and that they weren't getting anymore.  So I went up and down every aisle in the toy department and the bicycle area and found EIGHT of these value packs lying around here and there, in bins, behind other toys, on the floor.  And this is after being told they didn't have any.   My advice is if you don't see a display, just hunt every aisle I think you may find one or two.

But if that doesn't work, $10 on eBay is still a pretty good price, particularly for the ARC/white clone 2 pack, but not so bad for the other 2 either.

I say don't overpay on anything until you've looked around on the forums for someone who can ship you 'whatever' @ price. We've got a really helpful community here, so, look around.

I'm contemplating it, since none of my WMs ever seemed to get these in.  If they did, they were gone in the blink of an eye.  Sounds like most people missed out on them unfortunately.  That's too bad, since these are great looking sets!

If we're lucky, we might see Hasbro continue to do this for the later waves on the Clone Wars line...

I saw tons of all three last week and picked up a full set.  I had to trade the Anakin / blue CT away and felt it would be no problem picking him up at a later date.  I went back to the same WM yesterday and not one was to be had.  I'll probably see if I can track the Anakin pack down on ebay for cheap money.

I got all 3 for retail.  I saw alot of them the day I got mine at WM, but 3 days later when I went back and every single one of them was gone.  If you can get them for under $12, I say go for it...its a great deal, and a steal at $5.  BUT.  I will advise not to wait and get them NOW.  if this truly is a 'one shot deal" then I would get them....these could be the next 12" Plo Koon, which became a high end item awful quickly....and I would hate to see fellow collectors pay 10x the price for them...

I only paid $4.77 for each. Retail is learning slowly.

I was able to find two of them at retail (ARC Trooper and Anakin), but now I'm out a Yoda  :(.
I never figured I'd find em, but went into a couple WMs a few weeks ago and was able to find the last one at each.

So, has there been any word about followup shipments of the 2-packs?  I've only seen one instance of these shipping to WalMarts in my area.

I finally found these sets for the first and only time so far this past week. I picked up X1 of each. THey are now sold out. I seriously doubt that this Wal-Mart will get more in. It was a miracle that they got in the one shipment.

Thank God I hadn't resorted to eBay quite yet.  I had placed some bids, but the were REALLY low, so as I'd either win them for dirt cheap or not at all.  Wasn't quite ready to go all out for them and pay much more than retail value.  Glad I didn't.  I've been working the trading boards over hardcore the past several weeks, and have still only come up with 4 sets (out of the 6 I need for the carded and loose collections).  I paid cost for them in these trades, so I guess technically I've "overpaid" for them (above retail) when you factore in shipping.  But that's OK.  Just playing it safe!

KB having them for only $5.99 still ain't too bad at all.  What were they at WM?  $4.50?  For $6 each, I'll live, and be happy with them.  Now the question is, will KB be getting a similar "run" of these, where they're in one day, and gone the next... forever?  If so, better move quick again, since the WM sets all seemed to hit in the same weekend across the country, and then were GONE!

Well, I caved and overpaid - $12 each. But I'm compensated with the sense of security that I at least HAVE a set now.  8)

It's so frustrating to see a WM store display filled with GI Joe and Transformers value packs in mass numbers for weeks on end, and there was about a 1-day window for the Star Wars ones. Lame.

I just hope to find these at KB so I can have an opener set sometime soon and that they ordered in better quantities. Fingers crossed!

I still haven't found these in stores yet.  I did get one through a trade thanks to Brad (AngryEwok).  I am not and will not resort to eBay.

Well, people around here have just been scooping up as many of these sets as possible.  A bunch of KayBee stores near me got them, and the value packs have just flown out the doors.  I've only seen them once at retail thus far.  And I've never seen the ARC Trooper on my own.  It's kind of depressing, honestly.  I think either the scalpers are back into Star Wars (after laying off us during 2002), or there's an overabundance of army builders around here.  It's made getting these and the Clone Trooper 3-packs near impossible.
