Title: What else do you collect?
Post by: JediMAC on January 11, 2003, 06:27 AM
We all obviously collect Star Wars stuff (since you're here reading this post), but what else do you all (and your significant others) collect?  As for me, I also collect:
I think that's about it for me...

As for my wife Patty, she doesn't collect squat, and it drives me NUTS!  Everybody should collect something!  I really wish she'd pick a hobby or collection, as it would make it a ton easier for me to randomly buy her stuff on my own for her birthdays, Christmas, etc.  She's the only person in either of our families who doesn't collect anything.  Weirdo... (but don't tell her I called her that)!  Oh well, I guess she can keep pretending that she collects Star Wars figures, since she winds up pimping me so much of the new stuff before I ever manage to find it in the stores!  What a gal...

Well I collect lots of Scfi Fi stuff. Mostly from Gerry Anderson.

Supercar.
Fireball X-L5.
Stingray.
Thunderbirds.
Captain Scarlet.
Joe 90.
Secret Service.
UFO.
Space 1999.

I have all the original Dinky toys from them. Tons of figures, vehicles & playsets, model kits etc...
Grew up with those shows.

Star Trek playmates ships.

That's about it for me.  So far.  ;D

JediMac, I also have an HO model railroad. I have not been doing as much as I used to with it but would like to start soon. That and Star Wars takes up a nice sum of money. Each engine is around $60 these days. My grandfater and my great grandfather both worked on the railroad. My great grandfather worked on the C&O Railroad and then the Chessie System and thus now, CSX. My grandfather started on Chessie and went along when they turned into CSX, so that inspired me some to get into the hobby.

I also collect trains,  ;D.

My collections are....

Star Wars toys
DVDs
WW2 Airplaine models
Train set (cieling track w/ 2 bridges)
Star Wars Ornaments
Dustbunnies

I'll post a pic of the train-set in a "second", hopefully it won't take an entire day like last time, heh.

I don't know if it's considered "collecting", but I do have large amounts of CD's, DVD's, and books about WWII.
I gave up on Simpsons toys last year.
I also collect empty beer bottles ( mostly Alexander Keith's and Moosehead) ;D

Well I collect a few differnt things:

 GI Joe   3 3/4 82-87

 Military items (real)

Sportscards:: I went overboard on those in the late 80s 90s I think I have over 1 million cards
 Anybody looking for some?

I also like to pick up antiques I like almost anything old and almost perfect. The wife hates this btu owell she could be complaininmg about worse things

I also get into muscle cars and restore them as a hobby but thats getting to expensive to continue.
Title: Re: What else do you collect?
Post by: Scott on April 9, 2003, 09:34 PM
A million cards?   Holy crap I thought chuckles had a ton!  I was just going through my stuff BTW and pulled out 15 Sammy Sosa Rookies :)  Out of the "commons" box

I recently started two new collections:

Stikfas
Justice League (Of which I have them all except Hawkgirl who ahs not been released)

The Stikfas are pretty dang sweet but a bit on the pricey side.  A $2 reduction would sell these puppies like wildfire

Title: Re: What else do you collect?

Star Wars is the only thing I collect.  I do have a big interest in the "I Love Lucy" TV show back in the old days, and I have most of the episodes on VHS tape.  But, I don't really collect a lot from that show.  I think Lucielle Ball was one of the funniest female comedians to the day.
Title: Re: What else do you collect?
Post by: Jango Fettish on April 9, 2003, 10:01 PM
I've finally found 3 things I love to collect.
WoS Simpsons Line, Marvel Legends, and Star Wars.

I've got all the carded Simpsons figures, around 77 or so, 9 Marvel Legends, and I've streamlined my Star Wars collection a few times, but I do know I have 35 Jango Fett figures, each of which is uniquely packaged.  8)
Title: Re: What else do you collect?
Post by: Morgbug on April 9, 2003, 10:41 PM
Hmmm.

Bugs ;D

star wars 1995-present 3 3/4 figs,, Unleashed (though I won't own two Vaders) vehicles, playskool, action fleet;
but I've quasi-broken out of being a completeist.  I don't have every figure associated with Episode I or the vehicles or beasts.  Just no attachment there and same loathing for all things Gungan as I have for Ewoks (actually worse).

Simpsons - Homers plus a few others.  Have the THOH figs plus Burns, Burns Manor, Hank Scorpio, Smithers and now, apparently Scout Leader Ned diddly Flanders.  No MOE :D

LOTR - started and abandoned.  Only have FOTR Ring Wraith, Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn and they are all available except for Gandalf and Ring Wraith.  Have TTT Ring Wraith and Horse, but will happily trade it away.

McFarlane Sportspicks - NHL mostly.  Have all of NHL2-4 with the exception of a red Hull and a white Thornton.  Waffling about only keeping the goalies though.  These are the other acceptable things on display at work (Homer being the other).

Comics - from 1984-1994 or so, I collected comics and comic related cards.  Mostly Marvel (X-men, spidey, DD, Thor, Hulk) and some DC (predominantly Batman titles, though some supe, catwoman), Image (Spawn, Gen 13) and some others.  I fell out of it when big boobs became a super power that resulted in high comic book value :-\ >:(

Only thing my wife collects is Disney movies/DVD's so I can relate Matt.  Oh how I wish she would start with something.  Much easier to rationalize a purchase that way, or so Koda tells me. ;)

Naw, that's ok, she's hot.  Ever see the cover with her in a white bikini? :o  That pic should be in the other thread. ;)

I just didn't bother listing all the comics, just the mains.

Forgot to include spiderman/marvel figs as well.  Again, selective little git, I am.

I collect bug books too.
Title: Re: What else do you collect?

Modern Star Wars 3.75" figs and vehicles, Unleashed, Legos and whatever else Star Wars related that floats my boat.

I'm seriously thinking about starting a Gammorean Guard collection.  The Piggies are my favorite aliens and a character collection based on them shouldn't be too hard to amass, as there aren't many items with them on it.  Probably the hardest item to get would be that ultra cool 14" statue from a few years back.  I'm also seriously thinking about commissioning a Bill Cable One of a Kind drawing of the Gamorrean Guard.

Due to monetary issues, I've held off on collecting other toy lines.  Its tough because Marvel Legends, Muppets, MOTU and LOTR have really impressed me.  But I will buy a Sweetums Muppet fig if he's ever released, cause he's just too cool  8)

I do get comic books every week and have quite a collection of those, both in my apartment and in my Nana's house back in NJ.

My wife's like Matt's and Morgbug's, she doesn't collect anything except Hard Rock Hurricane glasses, but she's not as anal rentive about them as I am about my collection.

Other than Star Wars, I collect or use to collect the following:

Simpsons - I nearly have the entire WOS line. Missing a half dozen or so figs, a few playsets and a few exlusives and then I'll be complete.

McFarlane Sportspicks - Baseball only. Current on those. No variants, just the regular figs.

Baseball/football cards - No longer collect these but have about 75,000 of these from mid 80's to early 90's and late 90's to 2001.

CDs - I have a little over 400 of these including alot of imports but I just don't by them as often as I use to. Several years ago I was buying 2-4 every single week. Just don't have the funds to do that now with the other hobbies I've picked up since then.

This for people in the eastern US...I need 3 State quarters to be up to date with my collection...

Illinois
Alabama

Check your pockets please, oh and they all need to be Philadelphia mint (they have a P stamped on the lower right side below Georgy Boy)

Thanks!

State Quarters (http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/index.cfm?flash=yes&action=50_state_quarters_program)

I'll check my State Quarter stash out for ya' Scott, but like you mentioned already, we don't get too many "P's" out here - mostly "D's"...  The Kentucky one is pretty old, might have that one...  I usually can't find the brand new quarters 'til they've at least been out for 2-3 months - kinda like Star Wars figures pretty much...   ;)

Scott, I'll keep my eyes open for those three.  How anal are you about appearance.  Do they have to be super shiny just off the mint or can they show a little usage?

It shouldn't be a problem with all three, but 'Bama might take a little longer.  I just recently acquiried mine.

Word of warning too...

Dressel Rebel over at another forum tried to send me three quarters in the mail in a regular envelope, the thing got caught in the mail machine because all I got was a ripped envelope and an apology from the post office.

I hope they blew up their machine :-*

And I wouldn't blame you a bit.

I'm not sure how accurate that shipping-tracking is.  Stuff usually gets down to your area reasonably quick (relative to when I shipped it :-\) so maybe.  But maybe not too.  I think there are lots of things in there I never told you about, so hopefully you enjoy the contents.

Hopefully the former, but probably the latter.  We're probably all in the same boat with ya' though...  Maybe someone in boat #1, can float a few of their extra "bills" to us in boat #2 to deal with our "bills", making everything just honky dory...   8)   :P

Brent...I curse you, I now have a new collection to add

Captain America comic books

One of the only comics I read religiously as a kid was Captain America and in order to make up some huge trades with Brent I took possession of some of his golden oldies and She-Hulk mags.

Well a fire was rekindled probably coupled with my love of the MArvel Legends line and now I've been hunting down runs of comics on eBay.  They can be had very cheaply so it shouldn't be a problem completing a set back to when I started reading (around issue 300) and I've bid on some sets back before that since they are so cheap and will provide hours of entertainment

The scary thing is while paging through some of the issues I did have is remember them almost verbatim.  I must have read each issue ten times and I forgot how fun comics actullay are.

Any anger from the war department will be vented northward!

Moved your response to Nick into the new Sportspicks Thread (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=1291;start=msg13122#msg13122) Scott!   :-*

So feel free to continue on in the new McFarlane Sportspicks thread (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=1291) if that's your thing, and anyone else who wants to chime in with all the other stuff they collect can do so here (not to say you can't mention the Sportspicks as one of the things you collect here though  ;))...

Sorry for the interruption!  Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...   :-*

Hey, Brian? You know Toddy Mac is putting out NASCAR Sportspicks this year? Big E and Little E both got figs coming. I dunno that I'll be able to get them, given I am smack dab in the middle of NASCAR Country (Mooresville, NC..home of everyones damn race shop).

Anyway, since my last post things have changed.

My collection of 72 Simpsons is on eBay as we speak, I've gotten back into McFarlane figs, i.e. Predator and Matrix, and I am still doing Star Wars, L.O.T.R. and Marvel Legends.

Yep, spreading myself pretty thin, but I have to do something while we are all in this Star Wars drought.

NASA Space Shuttle toys/replicas
Any kind of spaceships.  I LOVE spaceships.   ;D
And the odd piece here and there.

I can't afford to pay $75 for him on Ebay, so... distribution here is awful.  I wish someone else would get the license.  MAC is a truly awful company.  The figures (such as they are) are nice, but their PR leaves a lot to be desired.

Where are you Spuffy?  I'll check a couple of the local stores.  I doubt he's around, but if he is I'll let you know what they're asking.  Sometimes you get lucky.  I managed to score my McFarlane repaint Cujo (only NM though) for $75 Cdn at a retailer when it was going for over $100 US on ebay.  At the time $100 US was around $150 or so Cdn, so you can imagine how happy I was.  Just missed a repaint Roy at the same store for the same price too :o

Well...I'vee decided to focus on toys from my childhood 1974+.  I am working on loose vintage SW figures.  No vehicles at this time.  I also collect Dune figures, vehicles, models, books, etc.  I just recently took up The Clash of the Titans, Tron, and Battlestar Galactica.  I'm still in debate on the Indiana Jones and Buck Rogers.

Here is a good reference site...

http://www.toymania.com/334archives/index.htm

Top Jedi:  Where were you when I was collecting Clix???  If you need any loose Secret Wars, old MOTU, Aliens, send me a list.  My buddy has a few.  Also do you have any words of wisdom concerning Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, or Indiana Jones figs.

My only words of wisdom for collecting those other lines is search E-bay often...and be patient......I've seen some great deals on tons of stuff.......but patience will be the key....unless you're loaded ;)

I really don't have much of a want list at this time......I just snag what looks cool......90% of my stuff is boxed up.....I'm hoping that within a month max my parents move out and I can set my collection up.....THEN I'll have an idea of what I need.......until then it's really a guessing game....other than vintage SW stuff....

Loaded!!!!  That's funny.  If turds were all of a sudden worth something, my butt-hole would seal up!!!  The Tron figs are the only real problem for me.  I spotted the newer versions on eBay, from a seller that's local.  The vintage are tough.  What burns me, is I used to have them all!!!  My very fortunate buddy, the one I've mentioned before, has alot of the Battlestar, Buck Rogers, Indiana Jones, and Clash of the Titans loose.  Maybe that's why I'm always broke.  I spotted a Kraken w/ box on eBay this morning, but he's already about $60.

I often times wish I could collect a few more lines than I am able to, but for now its just a little bit:

Vintage Star Wars 3 3/4": Loose, complete figures
Modern Star Wars 3 3/4": Figures, Beasts, Vehicles - Only the ones I like, not a completist, I buy them carded, but I open them as soon as I get them :)
Marvel Legends: I just got into this line, only collecting the "X-Men" ones.
State Quarters: My grandma started me on this collection, and gives me all the ones that come out from each year at Christmas :)

I've been "tempted" by a few other lines along the way, but haven't bought into them yet (we couldn't afford for me to collect something else I don't think, plus we don't have the room).  Other lines I almost got into include LOTR, the rest of the Marvel Legends, Gi Joe, Simpsons, and the new Masters of the Universe.  Just so many great toys nowadays ;).

Now it's just Star Wars + LOTR.

Harry Potter - Dueling Club Harry (The only HP fig I'll ever own)

McFarlane - Neo, Trinity, + both Predys. Soon to own TX + Casket Termy

No more room for anything else.. :P

Modern and vintage Star Wars, just about everything but 12"
Vintage RAH GI Joe RAH, pretty much from 82-89
G1 Transformers and PVCs, the only collection I'm equally obsessed with as I am for Star Wars.
Lord of the Rings, loose and carded. Haven't decided on Armies of Middle-earth yet.
Marvel Legends, but only the characters I like or know something about.
Kiss figures, but McF seems to be done with those. Looking forward to Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix figures.

Also, I collect vinyl albums from lots and lots of bands. Something about the album art. It's just too damn small on CD booklets. Especially the UK version of Hendrix' 'Electric Ladyland.' Hubba.

I find it great to see that people who collect G.I. Joe often just went for the '82-'89 waves.  It's nice to see so many others who loved that line from those years.

It's a shame what they've done to Joe now, but it's still one of Hasbro's biggest cash cows.  I did a large termpaper on the toy industry last semester, and Joe was (surprisingly to me) one of Hasbro's top brands.  It's really amazing what staying power that line has had...  I just miss the look/greatness that was the ARAH line from when it first came out.

I had a mess of cobra soldiers, grunts, flashes, etc...  I loved those original figures.

I quit in 1987 around the time of such great figures as Big Boa and Crystal Ball

Things got really dumb and I finally just quit

How were the figs in 1988 and 1989?

Ridiculous, especially with crap like Tiger Force, whatever that space gimmick was, G.I. Joe Extreme, etc.

The last Joe toy I owned was the Stealth fighter. Think I got Rolling Thunder w/ Armadillo as well at the same time.

I'm another GI Joe 3 3/4" 1982-89 collector.  The problem with alot of figs after 1987 is that they started coming out with Neon colored weapons, and started making mass 2nd, 3rd, & 10th versions/remolds of the same characters.  Seems they ran out of good ideas and used their crappy ones.  I've only got three figs after 87 and those are Iron Grenadier, Night Force Shockwave, and Night Viper.

I also collect:

Vintage 3 3/4" Star Wars figures.  Some POTF2 stuff too.
Vintage Tron Figures(none yet, just starting)
Vintage Lord of the Rings figures(also none yet, just starting)
New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Title: Re: What else do you collect?

I rahter liked Tigerforce, because of the deco partly, but also the figures looked nice...  A "unique" off-shoot of many characters I liked, such as Recondo.

And seeing the Rattler in Tiger camo, the Dragonfly, etc...  Those looked pretty damn nice like that.  :)

Battleforce2000 wasn't bad either, and their vehicles formed a fortress...  Not "realistic" like some of the earlier joes had been, but not too bad looking either.

To me, Joe jumped the shark when the big neon weapons started coming out, and when the "weapons that really shoot" thing was getting overdone.  That was never something Joe was into, and it just made things goofy, and many accessories grossly oversized.

I will say, some earlier items were the first signs of the apocolypse though...  Like the Golobulus figure, and while some love him, I say Serpentor was one of the earlier signs that things were going downhill...  Simply trying to replace Cobra Commander in the first place never struck me as a stroke of genius.

There was some great things though, and to me the first 3 or 4 waves will go down as the BEST waves of toys ever.  I mean, that first time you opened Snowjob, and saw skis that you could have him slide down a packed snow hill, well that rocks...  And having Airborne repel down a rope...  Those first vehicles that tied in perfectly to the first series of figures...  The first glider vehicles that really flew, and they actually would stay in the air a long time and do loops...  The Skystriker with working ejection seats that had parachutes on them.

Come on, that's GOOD toy making.  That's toy making Hasbro seems to have left LONG behind.

In terms of the other things I collect, I've gotta give props to Toy Biz this year.  They've really improved from their early days of hackneyed Marvel representations.  Just look at some of the Marvel Legends line, and the LOTR figures.  I'd argue that the LOTR Prologue Elf is one of the best basic figures I've ever gotten from any line.  And Sauron is right up there as a Deluxe.

And as for Marvel Legends, can you believe the fan base they've built?  It's incredible!

amen to that. I loved gi joe. it was really the only thing that ever knocked off star wars for me as a kid (though boba fett was often recruited for top secret cobra missions, usually when firefly was unavailable..i.e., captured and held in castle greyskull)

the playability of those toys was off the chart and the accessories that each came with were great...especially ones like stormshadow, scrap iron, and firefly.  though the 'regular' army look of that first wave (short fuse, rock n' roll, breaker, etc) was cool.  it made scarlett and snake eyes stand out even more

I've thought about replacing a lot of my original ones since most are a helpless pile of arms and legs and busted o-rings (though insanely loose firefly is still on my desk along with insanely loose boba fett).
Title: Re: What else do you collect?
Post by: Lemon-Viper on June 27, 2003, 11:19 AM
Those o-rings are extremely easy to replace.  You could have a working army again for around $4.00(depending on how many o-rings you need) if that's all that's keeping your figs apart.  You can get the right sized o-rings from any hardware store, or off most Joe collector sites.

Yes to a degree I do collect cars, much to the dismay of my wife. She complains that they take up to much room. They do but its not like I have hundreds. I have a few.  I always regretted selling a car I restored so now I don't sell them anymore ;) I am fortunate enough to have a large shop to store them at my dads house. I can't afford to buy show cars, so I find good solid cars to restore. I have a cousin in arizona who helps with some solid cars. I hate living in the rust belt of WI. I have been into cars and racing since I was 14. I still have the 70 SS RS camaro I drove in high school.  Cars and racing is my other big passion.

Anyway I can get you a good lead on that 67SS camaro.  Can't do quite as good as a deal as the Vader though ;)

Damn Scott, haven't seen a Maine yet out here...  My State Quarter collection has officially fallen behind once again...   :'(

On a SW collecting subset note - while we were doing some packing tonight for the big move, my wife discovered my new stash of the SW Playskool sets that I had hidden away.  Uh-oh!  Someone's in trouble!   :o  I tried to pawn them off as Brent's, since I'm sending him a couple as well, but she didn't buy it.  She's mostly pissed 'cause she thinks they look STUPID!   :-\

Just thought I would bump this thread up again, since it seems like everyone's interests are always changing, and plus...I'm always interested to see what everyone is collecting.  For me, its pretty much only Star Wars right now (for the most part).  I collect most of the 3 3/4" line, and I have actually gotten a few new figures within the past month.  I also collect the Unleashed line, as well as the Playskool line...if it continues any further.  Although we don't really even have enough room for my Star Wars stuff, other collections continue to call my name.  My wife isn't crazy about me picking up either line right now, but I am currently torn between MOTU and LOTR.  I kind of change my mind every week it seems.  I don't necessarily want to be a completist with either line, but I wouldn't mind having a few figures from each.  I currently only have He-Man and Sy-Klone from the MOTU line, and would really like to eventually pick up some LOTR figures (Gollum, Legolas are at the top of my list, as well as Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Sam, etc.)  Then there gets this issue of Armies of Middle Earth or the Toy Biz figs...aahh! :)  I make these decisions more difficult than they need to be.  Anyways, just curious what everyone was collecting at this point....if any lines have fallen out of favor with you, or if you have started collecting any new lines.
Title: Re: What else do you collect?

I've broken myself down to two principals, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I've picked up an interest in Buffy, despite my better judgement, and found myself satisfied with my Joe collection as is. My modern MOTU is slowly but surely being traded off, thankfully.

I still buy G1 reissues and Marvel Legends, but those seem to come out rather infrequently and I don't buy everything their respective companies put out.

I guess one could say I also collect DVDs and comics, too.

Besides Star Wars and Marvel Legends, two other things I collect are state quarters and golf balls.

I'm all caught up on the state quarters up to the coin released before Missouri (the current one).  My grandfather is usually pretty good about getting these when they are released and gets them in a roll and then hands them out to all his family members.  Well, for some reason, he decides to hand my wife the quarter instead of me.  I told her to keep track of it and not to lose it, blah, blah, blah.  What does she do?  Who knows, but she no longer has it.

I played a few different courses this year and noticed most of them have a golf ball with their logo on it.  Since I already had the golf ball display rack, I became obsessed with getting a ball from every course I've played.  Granted, some courses don't have balls and I suck at golf, but its fun none the least.

Besides SW, I collect old travel plates.  The ones from the 40's, 50's or whatnot from all over the United States.  If you still aren't familiar with them- the ones I collect are for the different states and they'll say the name of the state and then have drawings of different landmarks, and sometimes just little facts or whatever.
It is sort of a hand-me down collection from my maternal grandmother who has always had her's displayed.  I haven't actually inherited her's yet, but I've starting collecting some of my own.
My dad has a huge stamp collection, and I'm an only child.  I hope that it skips a generation.

My other big obsession for a long time was NES cartridges. I haven't redone inventory recently on them since a) they're sitting in the storage unit, b) I was down to a last few HTF ones, and c) have all the ROMS anyway. But, at last count I had some 590+ cartridges.

I was shooting for working cartridges of all the licensed US releases (some 650+). Boxes weren't necessary but manuals were, as was mint cartridge label (no jackass's name written on it or peeled off).

I do want to finish off the collection eventually, but I pretty much have to get all the storage containers and resort/recount what I have and start the search again.  :-\

The other side collection to the NES stuff was prototype material. I have one of the last NES rom carts we used at Virgin, and some old flash roms of stuff we never published, like Robocop Vs Terminator and New York Warriors (which have been ripped and leaked to the web anyway, so yay). I want to get ahold of some other oddball stuff along those lines once the cart collection is complete.

Ironic, but I was JUST unloading some NES boxes the other day...  We had HUNDREDS of games between my 2 brothers and I, and now basically we'd like to sell...

Do NES systems & games go for any decent $ at all?  We had the original with the robot even.  We really gotta unload these, but I'd hate to sell them for $.50 a game or something.  That'd really just hurt, thinking about all the $ put into them, ya know?

Lately I've been into the Chap Mei generic action figures. The toys can be readily found at dollar store-type outlets and clearance stores like Big Lots and possibly some flea market vendors. (Several years ago I picked up a few figures of soldiers at the flea market to use as custom fodder.) Toys R Us sells some of the military figures in-store and at one point sold rescue/emt sets. Through Amazon.com, TRU is distributing a whole bunch of Wild Quest (http://buybox.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-5785296-5130415) sets. (I haven't seen these in-store).

Blah. Go to amazon and search "Wild Quest".

I picked up Thunder Thor and White Fangs from the Beast Raider theme, an obvious grab for the He-man market. Also got the saber tooth tiger from the Polar Mission sub-set.

If I don't forget, I'll post in the non-SW collectibles the links I found on the net.
