Title: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions
Post by: dustrho on November 7, 2003, 08:10 PM
Just finished watching this and it was AWESOME!  I taped it, of course, and it was everything I was hoping it would be.  Anakin seems to be a bigtime bad a@@ in this, and I can't wait to see the rest of these.  I thought the teaser for Chapter 2 was pretty funny... only 5 seconds were shown.  LOL!

If you didn't have a chance to see, hopefully they'll air it again.  That reminds me, when is it going to be on again?

It re-airs at midnight, EDT.  Also, it'll be available to Hyperspace subscribers on the official site within a half hour or so.

I think the episode was decent.  However, the intro sequence ate up a lot of the showtime.

The voice actors seemed decent.  Yoda sounded good, and so did Obi-Wan.  I didn't think Palpatine was quite so good though.

If I'm not mistaken I thought I read in one of the Star Wars Insider magazines that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen did the voiceovers for their cartoon counterparts.   I swear I read that in one of them.  And Yoda sounded just like the real Yoda, so I wonder if Frank Oz did a voiceover for him.  ???

I watched the cartoon again, and again, and again, and the next chapter airs next Monday at 7/8ET.  Can't wait to see what takes place (even though there's a hint of a big space battle).

How about that Tauntaun-like creature Yoda came riding in on at the very beginning of it?  That was pretty cool.  And yes, Palpatine was pretty lame looking.

FINALLY! Something new and Star Wars that excedes all of my expectations! This was fan-frigging-tastic, I absolutely loved the cartoon. Cant wait to download it and watch it again. Im definately going to go all out trying to collect the cartoon stuff, everything I can get my hands on!

I do agree that the Palpatine voice left a little to be desired, and the intro kind of took up a bit of space. But now that its off to a start, I see good things coming!

Can anyone get to the Cartoon Network page to choose the Jedi that will be in the last episode, or enter the contest to get the cel?

Yes, I was able to get into it.  I voted for Roron Corobb (an Ithorian).  And if you get to the point you can enter a contest to win a signed Clone Wars animation cel and a Hasbro Clone Wars prize pack.

Got a link to the voting thing? Also want to sign up for the animation cell contest.

The only voice talents from Star Wars doing the cartoon is Anthony Daniels, everyone else is from Cartoon Network

Is it on at 8:00 or 9:00 PST?

to be honest, i thought it was too short for me to really form an opinion on, as to whether or not i liked it.   :-\ the action was cool, but it just seemed... i don't know. i don't understand why they didn't just make it an hour long special. would have been a whole lot easier to follow if you ask me.

It just screened at 8:00 PST!  I thought it was good, and it will peak major interest with kids.   I had a conversation with a boy in the toy aisle the other day, the kids are interested.

I will continue to follow the chapters, and eventually buy the DVD.

I really liked it.  Very energetic and more like the OT than the PT in style with all the droids and hanger shots and Yoda on his camel type thing.  Five minutes is WAY too short, though.  There's no good reason for it being little more than a commercial.

Post by: JediMAC on November 8, 2003, 12:22 AM
Yep, as I figured, this is going to be too much of a hassle for me to try to tune into or even tape, so count me in as one of the future DVD buyers!  Which by the way, was confirmed at the Lucasfilm licensing summit on Wednesday - Clone Wars shorts are indeed going to DVD.  I still think they'll somehow manage to intentionally leave at least some type of content exclusive to the Cartoon Channel somehow, just to piss us all off for thinking the DVD in and of itself, would suffice.  We'll see...

But I did catch some clips of these cartoons at San Diego Comic Con a few months back, and they were pretty cool.  Short, but cool.  I'd probably agree with Dave though, in that 3-5 minutes is just too short to really get into it.  Another reason the DVD will be great, is you can just (hopefully) watch them all consecutively.   8)

BTW, how long did it turn out to be tonight?  3 or 5 minutes?  What was the verdict?
Title: Re: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions
Post by: Jesse James on November 8, 2003, 05:02 AM
I loved it...  start to finish, it was great.

I'd say it was the best 5 minutes of my life, but I'd be lying...  :)  (Insert perverted jokes here by the way)

I thought all the voices were well done, even Palpatines which had the rather complex "regal" quality to it that's not easy to find someone able to mimic that.

If anything, I thought Palpatine's animated character looked emaciated and wafer thin which was odd since the actual human character is old, but doesn't look THAT bad.  I mean, did you see his arms?

Anyway, small tiff in an otherwise great 5 minute cartoon.  I honestly was hoping for more, and anticipating the next 5 minute cartoon...  Of course, that sounds lame, but I liked this that much.

Come on!

-Clones with black ponchos in a firefight during a thunderstom?  Woohoo!

-Republic Fighters Taking off and a glimpse at a non-clone Republic military personnel?  Oh yeah!

-Yoda riding headlong into battle and whippin' butt?  Show me more!

-All the other Jedi shown slicing battledroids up like they were deli meat?  YES!

-Anakin messin' with 3PO by force throwing his cloak on him?...  That was actually more amusing than most the humor seen in both prequals so far.  Kinda made him out to be a bullie/snot.

-Palpatine being a uberjerk in his office while Anakin snidely watched on?  Great!

-The Jedi Fighters giving a little ground support to the Republic forces by droping explosives?  I now want MORE Jedi Fighters cuz of that (The other squad colors helped).

Overall I think that was a neat little cartoon...  I'd take a full-length one honestly.  :)  I wonder what the ratings were for that tiny 5 minute window they had there?  I loved that toon though.  Very fun...  And I agree with anyone who thinks that THAT felt more like Star Wars than the last couple movies have.

The Anakin/Padme moment was even great...  I mean, it actually LOOKED more emotional than the two living actors have done.  That's great, and yet so sad at the same time.

I just wish I could've watched more...  And that my damn tape worked and I'd be able to watch it a little more closely over and over. :(
Title: Re: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions

The total running time was about 4 minutes, with one minute of introduction.

As far as trying to figure out why these cartoons are limited to only 3-5 minutes per week, I think I have an idea why they're doing it this way.  The artists are probably thinking people will either love it or hate, and only doing 5 minute blocks will cost much less than spending money on a 30-minute or 60-minute block.  I think of them testing out the show, to get a feel for what everyone's reactions will be.  If it turns out to be a huge success, then maybe they'll make the episodes a little bit longer (preferrably 30 minutes).  And maybe this could be the real future for Star Wars movies after EPIII is done & over with.  It's just an idea.

I liked what I saw from Friday night.  My fiance was really bugged about the way the characters were drawn.  She really did not like the way Palpatine and Padme were drawn.  Me though, I did not mind it at all.  But then I knew what they were going to look like for months now.

Heck I actually liked the way Anakin's JediStarfighter like.  Anyway, I am certainly interested in this.  It will be difficult if not impossible for me to see these in the next week or two.

When does the DVD come out???

Good stuff tonight...I wasn't too hip on the reuse of Music and Sound Effects from the OT in Chapter 1.  TOnight was better, tons of Ships, some good action.  I was thinking this was just the Battle of Geonosis Part II however.  Eh...I'm hooked for now :-*

Tonight's episode was great!  It seemed longer than the one on Friday, but I know it was the same length.  It was packed with action... that's exactly what we need to see.  And I loved it when those ARC Troopers and Clone Troopers popped out of that crashed Republic Gunship... very cool.

i'm gonna stick with my previous comments... i think i'm seriously going to avoid watching this until it comes out on dvd. it just seems that in the first two episodes, just as i start getting into it, it's over. now, hopefully, on the dvd they won't make it so that each episode starts and ends with the credits and logo and all, and just make it a conitinuous 30 minutes or so. otherwise, i'll just be in the same boat  >:(

I'm really impressed with this cartoon, and definitely hooked right now.  Its nice to have some new Star Wars to look forward to watching every week day.  Although the episodes are only 3-ish minutes long, they definitely do a good job getting a lot packed into those minutes.  And, at least for me, they really leave me wanting more and looking forward to the next day right away again.  I hope they at least explore the option of a 30 minute show when this micro-series is done with, I think they are doing a great job so far though :).

Post by: Jesse James on November 11, 2003, 07:34 PM
I had a blast with last night's episode.  Full of great action, and the intro of the ARC's.  The red arc's a squad leader or officer of sorts which is neat to know.  Shows a hiearchey and excuse for the colors/dots.

I love the voices personally.  I'm hearing around the net that people disliked Anakin's and said he was too whiney, but I think that's important to his character, and that his voice was pretty close to Christensen's.  I like the "Snotty" aspect to his character where he feels held back and that others are jealous of his quick adaptation to the Jedi lifestyle, and mastery of the Jedi arts.  He's cocky and arrogant, and that plays well to the character overall I think.  Whiney dialogue and all.

The only complaint, if it's even that, which I had for the toon is, and this is an EU complaint overall.

Once again, the EU have said basically F it to the established continuity.  My case in point this time is the Republic Gunships which seemingly were dropping from space.  These ships, in the FILM even, are established as not having doors that cover the cargo/troop deployment area.  Only the 2 doors that swing out and back that cover the rear most portion are there, and actually have a small missle rack mounted in them.

Why the Clone Wars writers opted to make these space-worthy craft instead of simply repulsor-lift atmospheric craft, I dunno.  They contradicted the film though completely because you can see inside the Gunships in E2 pretty clearly, and see there's no doors to cover it.  It's also a contradiction of the Incredible Cross Section.

Either way, it was great and that's all just minor stuff, but it's a thing EU does that is frustrating to some.  I mean, just do a little research, ya know?  Would an Acclamator Class cruiser coming into the Atmosphere to deploy the Gunships been that bad?  Oh well...

Overall, great, and here I am at 7:35 anxiously awaiting chapter 3!  This is great, and I hope and pray I'm able to get all of them on DVD somehow so I can watch them all in order and not have to worry about all this downloading crap online.

I now can see why you have been trying to land some Red ARC's.  They were shot calling.

Gotta love that gunship crashing and the commander just pops out and points!

If you download these can you then burn them onto a DVD to watch?  If so, how many episodes could you get on one DVD?

Indeed, the Red ARC's rock.

They're squad leaders, if anyone's curious, as Obi-Wan addressed one as "Sergeant".  I really honestly think this is a good sign t hat the supposed color structure to the standard clones is a bit of a myth as well perpetuated by an ill-informed EU writer in the Visual Dictionary.

Anyway, besides the EU stuff I was thinking of...

Tonight's episode rocked all. :)  Great footage of the various useful little gadgets ARC's use.  Who are the "basic" white clones with ARC's though?  I wonder if they're support or lowest level ARC's?  I'm guessing support troops personally.

Their equipment rocks...  I want clone Grappling hooks, Clone RPG/shoulder launchers, and clone hand-held sensor probes. :)

The Battledroid snipers also rocked the party with their neat visors and repeating blasters.  I'd take that as a figure!

We NEED this stuff...  These cartoons are as big a tease as the last date I went on...  :)  Definitely leave ya wanting more!

It's amazing what direction the SW universe is capable of taking...  With the right people running it.

I just watched the third chapter tonight. This series is very impressive and manages to capture the Star Wars universe wonderfully. On the downside, I don't like watching it in five minute chunks; it just goes by way to quick. I can't remember specifics, but isn't there supposed to be twelve chapters in the entire series? If so that will make a much better program to watch once it hits DVD. And, if they keep airing new episodes every night, they could theoretically get this released by Christmas. That would kick serious A$$! Personally, I think this is so well done that I’d like to see at least two hours total running time devoted to the Clone Wars exploits.

It's OK Todd.  Let it flow man...  Like this:  ASS

Yeah, we've decided to let that one fly here, since we're all big boys...   ;)

Due to laziness and being too busy, I'm just going to pass on the CW shorts altogether, and watch them in one big fell swoop once they hit DVD.  Should be much more fun that way, and I've got the necessary patience to hold out for that...  Can't wait though.  Sounds like everyone's really digging these things.

Rumors abound that the series will continue on beyond the originally scheduled 24 (I think it was) episodes now...   8)

Tonight's episode was unique...

Durge was pretty badass, as expected, and while I still wonder about the character choice I think he's turned into one of the best figures Hasbro ever made (The deluxe one).

The little droid gang he has under his command is neat...  I wonder if they're his or created by the Geonosians in their droid factories?  Hmmm...

The whole "lance" idea's a little goofy...  It's ok, but I mean, come on...  The lancing of the AT-TE was a bit much.   ;D

I liked seeing the banking clan guys all snivvling in their command center, and Durge did show some coolness there (And when he did his victory grunt/noise thing).

I liked seeing the leveling of some of muunilist's city that's under seige too.  That was a pretty neat part I thought...  The Clones were made look like chumps tonight though after they were built up as super troopers last night.

I'm not as wild about Chapter 4 as the prior 3, but I'm still geeked to watch Chapter 5 which is going to have Kit Fisto for the first time. :)

I'm also a bit curious about that space battle going on in Muunilist's orbit because they really are just skimming over it.

one thing i am a little confused about... in the comic books, there were like 3-4 blue arc troopers, and all of them were killed with the exception of one. in the cartoon, it seems like there are only 2 blue and 1 red arc remaining alive. i know that the book and the show take place at different times, but which came first?

Chapter 6...

Wow!  Not a whole lotta movement in the overall story, but a NICE full episode to introduce Assaji Ventriss.  She rocked...

She's got a shape-shifting ability too apparantly?  Through some force control I'm guessing since Dooku seemed to detect it/critique her ability.

She rocked all then by jumping into a great arena of gladiatorial combat.  What really got me was that I planned to do custom figures (Fan fic) of gladiator-ish aliens and such from Star Wars.  There was a Gammorrean and Aqualish which were the only 2 species I recognized.  The rest seemed to be a variety of large aliens and androids...  Not one human.  Kinda funny that Humans are a weak species of the galaxy but a "plague" upon the aliens in a way.

Anyway...  Assaji kicks everyone's ass there basically...  This little sick looking bald girl.  And makes them all look like chumps.  Her sabres are green and blue so far...  She seems like a dark jedi aspiring to become a Sith.

I wonder what her deal is though?  IS she looking to replace someone?  Is Dooku looking to off his master and become the master and this his apprentice?  Hmmm...

Dooku's voice was cool, and Assaji's was downright creepy.  Her glazed over white eyes were neat too.  Demonic looking.

Lots of death this episode too...  Aliens and androids in that arena were offed like Russel Crowe was in there doing the killing!

A great redemption episode for the Kit Fisto episode which was mediocre.  Some of the alien designs were a bit "extreme" but I liked them ultimately.  My favorites were:

-Crab-guy with one eye
-Robot-thing that Assaji killed and his head bounced on the arena floor
-The Dog-like alien with cinderblock things on a chain (Big alien!)
-Aqualish "ninja" dood...  Long hair even.

Those were some cool characters I thought.  Like I said, some "extreme" stuff there, but for a big scene like that it seems worthy.

I wonder what planet that was though?  Like where the hell is this underground combat event at?  Very mysterious.  It almost looked like Geonosis...  I'd liked to have seen where it was, and if ti was a Separatist thing or a public event that people just go to watch for craps and giggles.

I have a feeling it was that way because she'll earn the red lightsabers from Count Dooku.  That's the only thing I can think of.  I was freaking out the first time I saw her on the TV holding those non-red lightsabers.

Yeah, that was a good episode the other night.  The other gladiators reminded me a lot of the Samurai Jack cartoon.   Yeah, I know it's the same creators but I could not help but see the influence there.  Definitely looking forward to tonight's confrontation between Asajj and Dooku.

Tonight's episode was a doozie for "plot".

It answered some Q's and raised some others...  Overall it gets a thumbs up from me.  Jumping from one story arc to another sucked, but now that they're moving THIS story arc along it's cool.  The Mon Calamari episode with Fisto STILL doesn't fit, and is definitely my least favorite.

So Assajj is a wanna-be sith which I sorta figured was going to be the story.  She's turning into a pawn, which is cool, because she thinks so highly of herself.  I'm curious if Dooku's just an unwitting pawn also though?  Hmmmm

Her sabres are now the curved-hilt reds we have known and loved, so we're cookin' there I guess...  She was given them as a gift after Dooku whipped her good in battle (twice), and subsequently destroyed her old blue/green combo.

I'm guessing she is a fallen Jedi of some sort?  Trained in the Jedi arts, but her training was abandoned because of her emotional state?

It's kinda cool having Sinead O'Connor go balistic and get sabres and want to be a Sith Lord.  It's also kinda cool that she's a weakling when it boils down to it, and that she'll be punked out by Anakin probably.

Very neat episode, lots of Dialogue, and the first sighting of Lord Sidious...  Good overall in this viewer's opinion.

Yes, i really like this episode, I think Asajj is a bad ass,

also she tries to hard, she needs to take a break.

But i must say i liked when her and Dooku were dueling in the air, that was pretty sweet.

And when dooku gave her, her very own sabers,, and said ...."consider this a gift."  That was sweet, he is such a smart ass!! :-X

It reminded me of Vader alot...and in a good way. MisterPL had the idea that it would be cool to see the Jedi wearing armor similar to Vader's during the Cone Wars. Now I can see how cool that would be. It would also make sense for why Vader wears it. We've been seeing little samples and references to it (Obi-Wan last night, and Mace Windu has the shoulder armor in white), so I'm hoping we're getting a taste of what the Jedi may be wearing in Episode 3.

Obi-Wan in that Clone gear was as bad ass as it get's man! What a spectacular battle scene. It was almost as exciting as seeing Yoda open a can for the first time. I'd love to see this made into a figure. I also can't wait to see Anakin and Asajj's battle. I'm fairly sure how it will play out but it will still be cool nonetheless. So far I am VERY impressed with the series and I can't wait to actually have the opportunity to get 'em all on DVD.

Actually, I like the Durge from the Clone Wars cartoon much more than the one from the comics. In the comics he just walks around and talks trash and acts all comic-cheezy. In the cartoons, he doesn't speak. He just has that creepy metallic laugh.

He really reminds me of "The Shrike" (http://www.seanparnell.com/Hyperion%20Cantos/Web%20Pages/Shrike%20and%20Tree%20of%20Thorns.htm) from an excellent series of books I read a few years ago, the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons. If any of you get a chance to read this series, do it. You won't regret it. For more info on it, go here (http://mostlyfiction.com/scifi/simmons.htm). I personally recommend this series.

Eh, I kinda dig Durge, but I think his figure turned me more than his cartoon incarnation.

I mean, his figure is singlehandedly THE best figure Hasbro has put on shelves so far...  I think the Ultra Clone will replace it, but in the meantime Deluxe Durge is simply amazing.

-ball/socket knees
-ball/socket shoulders
-ball/socket elbows
-ball/socket friggin' torso
-ball/socket  neck
-wrist articulation
-working holsters for 2 nicely sculpted blaster pistols
-sawed off blaster rifle
-trident pike weapon
-nicely sculpted swoop bike

I mean, that's a LOT of toy for $10.  The first figure from Hasbro I can honestly say that they gave you everything you should get for a $10 toy I think...  Maybe Deluxe Luke/Bacta Tank was too, but Durge surpasses that I think.

Now, his cartoon character was just "ok".  The whole lancing to win a battle is a lame-ass plot idea though (Not Durge's fault, he coulda shot the hell out of Clones and I'd have dug THAT idea more).  Beyond that I think he's just ok though.

He's obviously a bit of a rip-off character.  A cross between the Terminator, T-1000 from T2, and a Boba Fett-esque bounty hunter...  And of course an obvious replacement TO the Fett boys.  That's a tad uninspired IMO, but I can still believe the Durge Character is/feels like a Star Wars character.

If I'd done the show though, Assajj would be the ultimate badass, not Durge.  She'd be weilding blasters, dual lightsabres, and a swoop bike with a gang of black droids.  Not Durge.

That would've helped simplify the story some too, as it's a bit weird having umpteen storylines for a series that's only 10 episodes, and each episode is only 5 minutes long...

Keep it to one story (the Muunilist story) and keep the characters to a minimum.

#11 was indeed a good episode...

Lots of dogfighting between Assajj and Ani, as mentioned, and it was pretty intense seeing them fly through the cityscape on the Banking Clan's planet.

BTW, the Bankers have a nice rock to rest on...  It's a pretty peaceful looking place.

Anakin was indeed particularly doofy tonight so that was cool.  Lots of snotty stuff that you'd love to smack the crap out of him for.

The Clones constant "Yes sir", "No Sir" answers are funny...  I like that they are not the best conversationalists, but Obi-Wan still treats them like they're normal people.

Assajj's ship is officially on my "To-Do" list for customizing.  I REALLY want a scale one that opens up and everything.  It's not too big, and I already have a million ideas floating in my mind on how to do the "fan" part too.  Good stuff...  And ya know Hasbro wn't get off their ass on a Season 2 Clone Wars line, so I'm left to do it myself...  And likely do it better anyway.

Her ship's one of the neatest designs...  And it even keeps to the Geonosian Solar Sailer look too.  Love that stuff.

I loved tonight's episode...

Watching 1-10 though reminded me of some of the STUPID moments from those though.  Durge destroying an AT-TE with a lance, the Mon Calamari episode, Durge wreaking havoc with his lance otherwise, etc...  These toons aren't without some pretty "Stupid" seeming flaws.  Kind of like the prequals but to a lesser extent.

Maybe its the reverence and understanding of why the OT was good? It seems to have a much more "Star Wars" feel to it than the PT does, amazingly. Maybe thats heaping too much praise on it, but just as an example, when Anakin has Assaj in his crosshairs, he says, 'I have you know,' to great parallel to his ANH line, without it seeming forced, makes an big impact. The banter between him and Obi-Wan, even in 3 minutes of #11, drives their characters' perspectives and attitudes more than most all of their AOTC dialog.

I hope they get a DVD of the series out this year!   ;D
Title: Re: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions
Post by: Jesse James on March 28, 2004, 04:01 AM
Yeah, there's something about the toons that has a genuine charm like the classic films does.  It tells me that Lucas is more to blame for Star Wars losing a step than anything else.  I'm still not fond of two actors in particular in the prequals though, but ultimately it's Lucas who just doesn't seem to have the same "knack" he did in the classic trilogy to make a movie that had nothing "forced" on you but was fluid and worked on all levels.

The cartoons have that...  They have some terrible moments too though, where you can see the creator's imaginations getting out of hand...  The "crap" superlaser for instance...  The incessant use of lances as weapons (I don't get this personally...  Someone's watched too many camelot flicks)....  Propelling Durge to super-human (or whatever he is) feats like lifting an AT-TE with a lance and a speederbike...

To me, these are the dumber things shown, but for every dumb thing there's been 10 neat things.

I mean, I can't even wait to make a figure of that weird cat guy that hosts Dooku to watch the arena battle.  I don't know why, but I like that guy and he's as boring as anything...  It's an excuse to buy an extra Imp. Dignitary I guess, and I like cat people.

Anyway, on the Durge thing with the lance...  I know some people actually dug that, and I'm not saying Durge isn't even cooler than I'd anticipated, but it's still crap because (and this is very nerdy of me, I know):

a) there's no way in hell a single guy could lift the AT-TE...  We're just pushing Durge as a character too far, and making him "too strong".  Seems silly to me...

and b) His bike, and or lance would've both broke upon impact...  Maybe he's that strong, but unless his bike and lance are made of indestructable materials all of a sudden, that just doesn't jive to me.

It's like most EU though, in that it has some overly creative imaginations at work that maybe don't take into account that part of Star Wars' charm is that it "looks real", and it "feels real".  It looks like it COULD be...  Beyond the Force, there wasn't much that made you go "Wow, how'd they do that!?" when you watched those films.  It just made you think that it was your own world.

If it's my own world, then maybe Durge is that DB at the gym that I can't stand who's always powerlifting and swearing constantly while he puts up his weight, then walks around like he has a stick up his butt all day showing off.  Maybe that guy can pick up an Abrahams tank while riding his Harley?  :)

Nah...  Durge just shouldn't be able to do that stuff.  Cheapens his character.

He's still cool though, and translated into the 2nd greatest (maybe even greatest) Star Wars action figure of all time.

Didn't he get all huge and wonky when Obi-Wan started hacking off his extremities? Maybe he is that strong.

I don't know. ??? It was a cartoon made for kids, and from what I've seen of Cartoon Network's other programming, not too far out of line with cartoons nowadays.
Title: Re: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions
Post by: Jesse James on March 28, 2004, 07:58 PM
True, but it's also got a duty to conform to continuity with the Star Wars films.  Now Lucas obviously doesn't mind it enough to say "hey, whatever", but to me it's got some lame qualities.

I love Durge, but like all EU I just disevow the things I don't like as simply never happening or not existing.  If it's crap, I ignore it is all.

After seeing the first episode of "Season 2" Friday, I am still really digging this series.  I'm glad others have noticed as well, that these toons really seem to have the Star Wars "spirit" like the OT did.  Not that I hate the prequels, although I don't like them nearly as well as the originals, but these toons do seem more "Star Warsy" to me.  Can't wait to see more of them this week, but a good debut on Friday.  I really enjoyed the "I have you now" line too, these are the types of things that should be done in the movies it seems.
Title: Re: CLONE WARS Cartoon... Reactions
Post by: Jesse James on March 29, 2004, 04:10 PM
I think it's funny that a cartoon of Anakin, and a cartoon of Kenobi can have a better relationship than the actors playing Kenobi and Anakin.

Or the same could be said for Padme and Anakin, but even more strongly.  That little moment he touches his canopy and she touches the glass of her apartment as he leaves for war is actually REALLY good.  It trounces every "tender" moment he and Padme had in E2.

McGregor does a nice job with Kenobi in the films, but the guy can't carry every scene with Christansen.  It's a shame really, that their cartoon likenesses had better dialogue, better timing, and were simply more in tune with the classic trilogy.

I like the prequals too.  This is coming from someone who is excited when each of these movies comes out and leaves the theater happy every time.  Hell, I even watch E1 anytime I see it on TV.  But these cartoons I could watch religiously if they were a ful-length series and the quality didn't diminish.  They're just that great.

I'm imagining Rogue Squadron in this format set after Endor...  Like in the immediate aftermath.  I would just go nuts for a cartoon THIS good with classic trilogy characters.

I have a slightly mixed reaction on 12 and 13...  (Missed 12, had to wait to d/l today...  crap in a hat)

Anyway, here's my take...

12 starts out awesome.  A collossal battle with taking place on the rural Dantooine (BTW, neat to see that Dantooine still looks futuristic, but has a sort of agricultural and docile theme going on.  An entire planet like that, with few cities, and at one point a big ass rebel base makes this planet all the more believable and interesting to me, but I digress).  Basically everything looks cool.

The battle's playing out well too, with the child's perspective on the hillside really adding to it.  You see Droids and Clones in everything from hand-to-hand combat to wild blasting.  I would say that a minor complaint is that this battle fell prey to the prequal battles as well, in that it has no rhyme or reason to it.  It's a haphazard mish-mash of intermingled troops blasting the hell out of each other, rather than a seemingly definitive "line in the sand" that two sides are clashing over...

That would've made the battle slightly more believable to me, but whatcha gonna do, ya know?  It was still sort of neat, but there just wasn't any "form" to the function...  They didn't even appear to fight over anything, did anyone else notice this?  I saw no clear objective, like a Separatist base, or something.

Anyway, Mace kicked ass in it, and that was cool.  I can buy the over-the-top stuff in 12, as Mace seems like he'd be a bit extra tough in battle.  A guy not to be trifled with.

The "ground pounder" or whatever the hell it was, was neat, but sort of disappoionting too.  I can only accept it as some attempt at an experimental weapon by the Separatists, but to me it smacks of  yet again the "Super weapon syndrome" that plagues much of the EU.  I've seen others liken it to World Devastators, and I agree, and World Devastators sucked the first time around so I dislike the concept from the start.

That said, the thing seemed simplistic...  It was intended to just F up a battlefield where the separatists were maybe losing, so that basically nobody wins the battle.  I can accept that (I'm trying to convince myself anyway), and the vehicle wasn't out sucking up natural resources like the stupid Devastators did.  That's lame.

These were simple pile drivers...  We have thingsn like this on Earth, just smaller, so I guess I can see the goofy attempt at making one a weapon.

Their effects...?  Well, I'm not physics major, but I somehow question the whole process somewhat, but I'll just overlook it.

Overall then, I liked the episode.  Hardcore combat, little dialogue (sometimes that's good), and lots of neat, gritty, "realistic" military stuff that makes you think this IS a war, and not just some super-hero crap...  That's cool.

Chapter 13 then...

I liked 13 for the same reasons as 12, and mostly as a wrap-up to 12 (which is all it was), but the excessive force-power useage by Mace kind of fell flat on me.

So when Mace wigs out with the Force, he turns into the incredible hulk and can destroy anything with a flick of his wrist?  Damn...

Had this been toned down some, I'd have liked it more.  it works for a toon, but if this were a comic, or video game, or *gasp* film, I'd had hoped  it would've been more "realistic" as they say.  I could see him kicking some droid butt, but not EVERY droid butt without a saber.  That just strikes me as odd, and makes you wonder why he, or anyone else didn't do this at Geonosis.

If you went by Clone Wars, you'd think Mace could've rescued Anakin, Obi, and Padme at Geonosis himself, ya know?

The way he got into the ground pounder thing sorta sucked.  I would've liked a more "real" method of getting in it, like a commandered vehicle of some sort.  That's just my take there though.

Short of those couple minor things that I'd change, I liked this episode too...  IT was really fun, and the way it ended was great.

The handing of the drink to Mace only needed Mace handing his tattered Jedi Robe to the little boy to make it more a parallel to the 1970's Coca Cola commercial where Mean Joe Green gives his game Jersey to a kid who offered him his Coke in the players entrance.  Any Pittsburgh fan (especially the die-hards from the old-school Steel Curtain I'd imagine) catches that one right away.  Good stuff.

Mace = Joe Green...  Hmmm....  Funny.  :)

So, in short, 2 great episodes...

I would just like to see a LITTLE more structure to the battles...  At least make them look like there's 2 sides, ya know?  And tone down the Jedi abilities slightly.  I think this is more the style of the animators more than anything, but it's a bit over the top...  I don't think it'd hurt the "action" to make things slightly more believable.

The ground pounder things kinda bite, but they're better than the lobster super laser the Quarren used.  THAT was, to say the least, a terrible idea.  Too Death Star-ish, and didn't even look real creative, nor add to the story if you ask me.  That's all old news though.

Well, another winner with Chapter 15 - from a certain point of view. More great fun with the characters and dialog is what did it for me. Yoda using the Jedi Mind Trick on Captain Typho, with Typho repeating in Yoda-speak is fantastic, actually funny without being blatant. This is superior writing for all of the characters, again. What's getting a bit redundant is the lightsaber acrobatics and droid smashing, however.

I really enjoyed last night's episode as well, the Yoda/Typho part was funny.  It was nice to see more of the droids and Padme too.  I really think that they are doing a great job with this micro series overall.  Sure, things can be a bit over the top sometimes, but I've been able to look past that just because the rest is so well done.  I really hope they release the series on DVD soon.  Hopefully this isn't the last we will see of Star Wars in animated form either.

chapter 17 was crazy. I thought it was really cool seeing the clone troopers thrown about.  The part that ruined that episode was when ANakin says something like "something's not right, i can feel it." I felt like saying "No ****? you just saw that clones helmet roll by!"

2 video game "bogarts" from Clone Wars...

-First, in one of the ARC Trooper episodes, the one troop raises his rifle and there's a "click click" sound, which sounds like someone "Lock and Loading" a weapon...  Anyone know the sound I mean?

This was actually a soundbite from the original Dark Forces game from WAY back when.  Took it direct and put it in Clone Wars.  Cooooool homage to a great game.

-Second is the steaming lightsabers...  Or I think it is personally.  In Jedi Academy (the last Dark Forces/Jedi Knight game), there's several duels you perform as the main character in rain ranging from thunderstorms to downpours that go from a dead stop to light to heavy.  The sizzling lightsaber is exactly the same...  I think they pulled that from the game personally...  Otherwise it's just an eeerie coincidence. :)

Anyway, onto my impressions of the Anakin/Assajj episodes...

I'll keep this short, but basically I enjoyed them.  A bit much at times with the hopping around and things, but that appears to be a theme to the Clone Wars.  Lots of over-the-top Jedi action...  Use of force powers beyond the films, etc...

It's neat, but the Assajj/Anakin fight came into its own in the last episode when he offed her using the darkside.  GREAT climax.  Great enemy pawn character.  Great effects to show him "turning" and using his dark powers.  Great death for Assajj.  Great weather effects with the thunderstorm to set the mood.

This episode, in and of itself, embodies Star Wars, and the hype that SHOULD circle Episode III.

Great stuff, and a great way to show Anakin's not just disobeying orders, but he's also acting out on his dark emotions now...  Anger's going beyond vengeance for a loved one, but to all out rage when fighting his enemies.  Overpowering them as Luke overpowerd Vader himself at the end of ROTJ.

This is right up there as the best episode of the series.  Can't wait for the last two, to see if they top it.  Good stuff.

I totally felt an intro to Episode III in tonights episode!

That yell that Anakin mad too, was vicious!  I am scared of that young fellow! ;)

This above all was the best episode, *cough* tomorrows will be better *cough*!

i also just downloaded chapter 20 and watched it.  it was actually pretty hard to keep up with what was happening because the action was so fast.  i ad to rewatch it like 6 times and rewind it a whole bunch to catch how each jedi died (or didnt die depends on who it was).  It took me like 20 minutes to find out how aayla got beat.  finally saw her thrown into the wall with another jedi.  general grievous is one SCARY bad guy!

WOAH at Grevous. It's nice to see that he is made to look like a giant threat AND they gave him some cool moves (The twirling sabers, hopping on one foot, holding sabers with his feet, bouncing and sticking off of walls). They did MUCH BETTER with him then they did with Durge (Probably because he will be in the next movie).

About Ki and Shaak fighting him, I have a feeling that the conclusion to that scene will start off Episode 3.

Anyone else notice the Shaggy character? His name is Sha Gi. :)

I was hoping they'd add on the last set before they released it but I guess they are going to release it in the spring of 2005:

Clone Wars Micro-series on DVD -- The Emmy-nominated series one and two of Clone Wars will be coming to DVD from Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox Home Video in spring 2005, around the same time as the debut of the third season of Star Wars: Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.

I'm not complaining as I am glad we are getting it but I guess since I have to wait until next spring, what's a couple more months??

The stuff on the gunship's just noseart like in World War 2...  Or even today, Warthog "Tank-killers" often have the shark motif.  Dunno what the beast was on the Gunship but I liked it.

The episode was fantastic...  Great Clones, especially ARCs, making Greivous do a little work...  I liked the new weapons in a "Mini-Gun", and a "Pom-pom-Gun".  Some heavy weapons are much needed for SW grunts.  Many customizing ideas just popped in my mind, haha.

I thought the Anakin/Padme development was ok...  Showed the tension, wasn't overdone...  Nice seeing 3PO get his gold plating and there was humor there too with his showing it off.

The Knighting was ok...  A little too earthy I thought, but whatever.  Plus, how do you knight anything that doesn't grow hair and stuff?  See, the whole ceremony applies only to humans really...  Just seems odd, but then again I'm not a huge fan of the braids and stuff from the films.

Overall, great episode...  To me this series shines with the combat and stuff.  I liked it from start to finish, but the highlight is the beginning of the episode with the ARC rescue...  I liked the bombs they leave in a trail to the wreckage too, to blow on the way out and clear their path of escape.  Very clever...

The voices of some of the Jedi bugged me, but I'll live.  Namely really Kit Fisto who needed something more alien I thought, but no big deal there.

Great episode and I'm already stoked for tomorrow.  I wish these were a full half hour though.  They easily could fill that much time per episode actually.

I really enjoyed last night's first episode, and although a half hour show would be great...it sure was nice having about 15 minutes to watch instead of 3.  This toon just makes the ARCs and Clones look so....cool....for lack of a better word.  The opening sequence was quite nice, and the rest of the episode was neat as well.  I enjoyed the little Anakin - Qui-Gon moment/flashback as well.  I'm really looking forward to the next episode tonight, and hopefully they won't wait too long to release the DVD of this "season".  Part of me wishes they would make this a regular series, it just seems so well done to me, and I know I'd like to see more.  They do a good job of taking a few liberties to make it "cartoony" without deviating too far from the Star Wars world, or making it seem too silly.  Good stuff.  Picked up the first volume on DVD this morning, oh, and they did have those 3 packs at Wal-Mart as well.

I was very skeptical of this all during the first run but last nights episode was pretty swell.  My only beef (and as I've said many times before about EU in general) the forcing of OT references and lines in to the story and the like.  It just doesn't need to be there, and while its a nice nod to the OT, it just seems forced more often than not.

Good, good stuff though...I'd be OK with them doing 1/2 to 1 hour specials or the like for the time between Episodes III and IV, I think that would help flesh out that glaring hole left by Lucas.  I still have no idea why he made the PT timeline like he did.

I liked it.  C-3PO's opening of his robe was a little weird, but other than that, pretty damn good.

Need to find some GIJoe / generic army figure weapons that might work to outfit my clonetroopers.

At first, I got that same "North America" error screen. Torrentspy.com has torrents for 21,22,23. A ton of seeders, too. It's only taking about an hour and a half to download.

Good episode tonight...  I liked the idea of seiging shielded cities like that, rather than the fast/furious attacks of the films and stuff...  Another tactic, and neat to show how the war varies.

The battle scenes were good this go-round...  More good clone action.  Greivous/Dooku were cool too.

I'm confused if the battle at the opening was the siege Obi/Ani broke as well...  Same thing, or different?  I dunno.  I liked their leader though, and his exchange with the droid with the macrobinoculars at the beginning.  :)  Very funny.  Another Separatist Leader I guess...

I love this series...  I'd kinda like seeing this continue as well, and with it becoming a half hour series that runs alongside whatever other TV Series the Lucasfilm crew has set up...  Could be really interesting, and both could appeal on different levels I think...  in different ways.

I really enjoyed Chapter 23 last night.  The Anakin/Obi-Wan storyline with the tribe is something different, but has been interesting.  The best part for me was all of the action and battles on Coruscant with various Jedi (Yoda, Mace, Saesee) taking part.  Again, like I've said before, they do a good job makes the ARCs/Clones look "cool" in this series.  There is that one part where the clones seem to be overwhelmed, and one of the commanders takes on a number of Super Battledroids on his own, picking up a fallen troopers' gun and taking them on guns-a-blazin'.  I thought it was neat anyways.  Even my wife said last night while we were watching it "its the kind of show where you don't want it to be over" :).  Looking forward to tonight's episode.

I'm glad these episodes are also going to jibe with the stuff from "Labyrinth of Evil" - the scene in Palpatine's apartment and what we caught a glimpse of in the preview for ep24 with the elevated train were GREAT in the book - I can't wait to see Mace taking on Grevious on the train!

I also thought the painting foreshadow was pretty keen.  I'm not so keen on the force powers of aliens (ala Saesee Tiin's and Plo Koon's BS Saga Force Effect stuff)  Those powers are never showcased in the movies and they smack of EU crap to me.  So why it is cool to see a Hammerhead Jedi, I think the stuff they had him do was lame.  But that's me :P

I liked the Hammerhead force scream thing, but the explosions on walls, the fist-fighting SBD's, and other things tend to suck a bit.

The all-out saber smackdown with Greivous and his goons was great though.  Real classic saber fighting.

The Clones continue to impress too.  They're great.

Greivous' character was great tonight too.  He really "grew".  The catlike moves, and his twice now poking his head out a window and sorta shocking everyone.  Just great.  And in true SW fashion the bad ass villain goes out like a punk by having his cape tied to a train.

I am really continuing to enjoy this series.  Last night's episode was another great one, and I can't wait for tonight's finale (although it is sad to see it end).  I really think it would be cool if they continued Star Wars in this type of arena after the movies.  Like I mentioned in another thread, maybe its the kid in me, but I really get into these episodes and think it would really take off with kids and adults alike if they would make this (or something like it) into a regular series.

The saber fights with Grievous and his guards were great.  I like how this animated series allows some of the "background" Jedi to get a little more attention/spotlight that isn't really done in the movies.  I thought the Hammerhead Jedi was really cool, wish he would be in ROTS somewhere.  I agree, there are a few moments throughout this series that get to be a bit much from time to time...just in a cartoony type of way...but I guess I look past it for the most part because overall the series is so great to me.  Also, like Jesse mentioned earlier, the clones are just too cool in these shorts.  To me, the animated series has done a great job fleshing out areas that maybe weren't done as well in the movies (well, at least in AOTC).  I get a better feeling of the Anakin/Padme relationship, as well as the "good friends" part of the Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship.  That, and all sorts of Clone Wars battlin' action :).  Good stuff, I'll be sad to see it come to an end.

All-in-all I was very satisfied with the five new episodes. I'm not too thrilled with the fact that the animated series didn't fit in with the story in the novel "Labyrinth of Evil" - in that book Anakin and Obi-Wan were on a rim-World with the goal of confronting Dooku and the entire time the Jedi were trying to protect Palpatine he was surrounded by Red Senate Guards and there was a sequence on one of those trains where Mace actually squared off against GG.

If they were going to do all of this material based on the days/minutes leading up to EPIII, I would have preferred that it all MATCHED.

I really enjoyed the last episode, and the whole (continuation) of the series in general.  I'm kind of sad that it is over actually, as each episode was exciting to watch.  My wife even commented to me several times how it is the type of show you don't want to be over when you are watching it.  Actually found her watching the marathon on Saturday while she was working out :).  Anyways, a good series overall, and I'm already looking forward to these being released on DVD as well.  I'd like to see this (or some form of it) continue as a regular, half hour series, I think it would do well.  If not, well, we at least got about a 2 hour "movie" of animated Star Wars.

The only problem I have with EU prior to ANH is that there's some pretty good stuff established that I'd hate to see NEW stuff trample on.  I'd dig it if they looked deep in the EU, and made it all fit in one cohesive story...  It'd make any potential thing they try more entertaining for me personally, especially since a lot of the pre-ANH stuff I really dig...  Hate to see it get dumped on.

Here goes my cartoon OCD...I always notice mess ups in cartoons:

When one of those Hulking guys pats the other's back, he still has the harness on, and then doesnt.

When Anakin is talking to Obi-Wan with his hand wrapped, his scar is there, and then blue again.(I think. I dont know if it's exactly right, it just hit me.)

Then when Anakin runs off to his starfighter, it's still blue(the scar).

Yes they are showing them all.

The series WILL eventually be continued in the form of half-hour 3-D animated episodes (presumably three-dimensional computer animation like Pixar or Final Fantasy). I don't know of a precise date, but I doubt it will be sooner than a year or two.

Just seeing this new packaging for the next series of Attacktix, with a Stormtrooper and Han in Stormtrooper Disguise on the outside...in animated form, it kind of reminded me of the same type of style of the Clone Wars series.  Part of me wouldn't mind seeing a cartoon set in the OT time period, although I might be in the minority with that.  Here's a pic (from RS):

I've been re-watching the Clone Wars series on DVD this week while I'm running on the treadmill, and its really bringing back how much I enjoyed it.  I agree, I liked the Grievous voice in the series as well, and wouldn't have minded seeing that in the movie too.  The whole CW series just really seems to get the overall "feel" of Star Wars, in some cases better than the prequels (well, the first two anyways).  I know its on tap to start up again in 2007/2008, but with a different team/animation/etc.  I hope it is as good as this "micro series" was.

I have those same feelings and fears about the series coming up Brian...  I worry it's not gonna live up to my expectations much the way E1 was a flop when compared to the classic trilogy's quality overall.

My love of the toons is unending though, they were done well.  Especially if you were able to watch them with that feeling they were stories being retold with exagerration and things, but based in the truth (if that makes sense).  They were just great fun and excitement then...

I remember watching every episode when it premeered and getting all anxious waiting for it to come on...  It was fantastic.  Everything from the goofy Separatist General in the trenches to the fast-paced action of Grievious stealing Palpatine...  There was just a ton of great stuff int here.

Even the episodes that stood alone (not my favorites) were still great...  The Quarren/Mon Cal episode with Fisto was really nice even though it didn't tie to anything...  And the Windu bit where he gives his cloak away like the old Steelers Coke commercial from the 70's.  That stuff's classic to me. :)  I just really hope the new series is able to match that quality.  It's a lot to live up to in my eyes.

Same as I hope the live action TV show is able to parallel the great way that Episode III was done.  If it was done half as well as say Deep Space 9 or The Next Generation (the last half of the series anyway) I'd say it's got legs to be a hit itself.

That's just how I'm feeling about it Jesse.  It seems like Lucasfilm has really been touting that the new series will be "all CG", and while that might turn out to be great - I wouldn't have minded if they kept the same animation/team as the previous installments.  Like you mentioned in your post, I really looked forward to each chapter and it felt more "Star Warsy" to me than the first two prequels in many respects.  Hopefully the new series will continue on the quality, and we'll get a nice "realistic" sculpted line to go along with it.  I still would have liked to see the Clone Wars line/figures continue, using the designs from the show as inspiration but with realistic "movie" sculpts.  No "frito bandito" Yoda, just have a Yoda with his hood up like on the toon.  Anyways - I'm glad there are more on the way, hopefully it is great once again.
