Title: New York - Toy Fair 2004
Post by: Mainland05 on February 4, 2004, 10:50 AM
With the NY Toy Fair 04' coming up in one week, i bet we are all very excited to see what is coming up for 2004, with Star Wars & LOTR.  I know i am really hyped up and ready to see those pics. But what do you all think is going to be shown? What figures do you think we will see any new, or suprises? Tell me what you think.

Well, we'll for sure get confirmation on the Original Trilogy Collection (Dagobah Wave) probably the Bespin and Coruscant Waves as well.  Not sure if they are going to show everything or just a little bit like they did last year

what was it last year in March, when they showed the Durge, and Clone Wars figures, what was that called? Was it just a Hasbro Press Release, or what? And do they do one every year or was it just a one time thing?

Not sure, our site was invited to Toy Fair and I'm sure we will be invited to the Hasbro show if there is one again, they have been sort of secretive on the plans so far.  Most signs point to a full blown deal at Toy Fair though again

Here's my question...

"Will the Super-Articulated Clone Trooper be released in higher numbers, possibly with other ranks mixed in, since SW collectors are willing to spend a fortune on them?"

Will the remaining Red Clone Wars ARC Troopers ever see shelf time in the US?

(AFAIK they are only in Canada)

I highly doubt we will have pics up before the rest of the other sites, we will be able to talk to them though much like dustrho and JediMAC were able to at Wizard World in Chicago and Comic Con in San Diego

Mind if I parasitize?

Will we see the SACT as an army builder four pack?

or

Will we see the different colored ARC troopers as an army builder four pack?

Both would make life much, much easier.

Will we ever see an ICMG figure? :-*

I really want to see some more Jedi!!!

And i would be pleased to see Sly Moore, Sio Bibble, and maybe a few Episode 1 figures, which to me was the best time of year for Star Wars for me. I wanna kinda relive the moment, that is why i have been really wanting to see EP1 figures in retail again.  But oh well.

Lets just hope we see a whole lot of good, amazing, exciting, brilliant, stuff!!

Great questions stan!  Keep 'em coming folks, and we'll see what we can do to run them by Hasbro's Toy Fair reps in a few weeks, and hopefully get some insight into a few of these mysteries for y'all...

Hey, which one of you guys is coming to NYC? Thats where I live!  :P

Ed - I don't think you really want to hang out with Dave (jokabofe).  He smells kinda funny from what I've heard...  But that lucky stinker will be our local man on the scene, since he's right in your neck of the woods already (NJ).   ;)

But if you two get together anyway, throw back an extra beer for me!   8)

Ok...

Will we ever see another Y-Wing?
Any chance of a to scale AT-ST or Snowspeeder?
Are more SA troopers planned?
Why do you shun OT playsets? We want a Death Star, dammit!
Why don't you rerelase the Death Star playset form '78?!
Why can't you do scale wings on a tie?
Any chance of Collectors fleet coming back?
Will you continue producing figures till 2018?
Can we expect 2004esq figures for Episode III?Or are you going to turn your back on the collectors again?
Why can't you make scale ships like 21st Century?

How can you get invited to Toy Fair? ???

It's invitation only, and those invitations pretty much just go out to retail toy shoppers, advertisers, and various media type outlets that would be suitable for covering the event.  Typically, most of the SW collecting sites will have a couple staff members invited to cover the show, but that's it.

No "commoners" allowed!   :P  Imagine what it would be like trying to get into something like that, if it was open to the public?  Every SW collector within 500 miles would be knocking down their door, and then you'd have to consider all the toy fans that are just like us for the various other toy licenses on the market.  It would be pandemonium...   ;)

Hence buyers and media only...

To attend Toy Fair, Hasbro must invite the business/group that you are with. As Famine said, I believe, you do not pay to get in, it is by invitation for vendors, press, and media.

As of right now, JediDefender will have at least one staff member attending Toy Fair 2004 and you can be sure that we will bring you pictures and the latest updates as soon as we receive them from Hasbro or the show. We also will surely attempt to do an interview with someone at Hasbro and incorporate reader questions into the feature.

My questions for Hasbro at the Toy Fair:

1. Whats up with Cantina wave 2, especially Kitik Keed'kak?
2. When is the next Fan's Choice poll?
3. Whats ups with the Sandcrawler and what figures will be included?
4. Whats the deal with the OTC?
5. Any surprises for 2004?

My question suggestion:

Can we get, or expect soon, some clarification on the fate of the Saga line and the forthcoming Original Trilogy Collection (OTC). What is the plan as far as release schedules are concerned for both and will both lines continue simultaneously? Is the OTC simply the beginning stages of yet another card design change for the Saga line or just another micro-line like Clone Wars, Shadows of the Empire and the Expanded Universe?

Here's a little question...

Will the Super Articulated Clonetrooper be moved into Saga eventually?

Also, whoever speaks to Hasbro, please (PLEASE) tell them that distribution still stinks, and that we want to support them and their product, but we can't do it if they don't get the stuff in the stores.

Hasbro releases a tidbit to get us worked up prior to Toy Fair this weekend:

"STAR WARS ORIGINAL TRILOGY COLLECTION

Ever since the classic Star Wars trilogy burst onto the screen in 1977, a new generation of movie and toy fans has continued the tradition of celebrating the past, present and future of the Star Wars universe. In 2004, Hasbro builds on the tradition with the Original Trilogy Collection of authentically detailed figures, vehicles and lightsabers, this time celebrating Lucasfilm's fall release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD.

Hasbro's Original Trilogy Collection will recapture the magic of the first three Star Wars film releases from the late 70s and early 80s for a new generation of kids, bringing back the memorable black-and-silver retro package look and collectible new versions of the earliest Star Wars toys.

In addition to updated action figure versions of the most favorite characters from the first three films, Hasbro is bringing back one of the most legendary spaceships in the galaxy -- available for the first time since 1996 will be the Millennium Falcon. (Approx. $4.99-59.99; Available in fall)"

My Questions to Hasbro:

-What's the possibility that we see the Super Articulation feature of the Clone Wars Clonetrooper expanded to other army builders?

I think that all the Imperial Troops are a no-brainer (Scouttroopers, Stormtroopers, Snowtroopers, Sandtroopers, etc.), but other characters like the Rebel Fleet Troopers, Rebel Hoth Soldiers, Rebel Endor Commandoes, and possibly the Jedi figures could stand to see the Super Articulated treatment.

-Has Hasbro considered taking a page from the G.I. Joe line's popularity by making a "Versus 2-pack"?

I'd personally love to see an idea like Super Articulated Hoth Rebel Soldier Vs. a Super Articulated Snowtrooper.  Or, perhaps a Super Articulated Rebel Fleet Trooper Vs. a Stormtrooper.  Army Builders would indeed rejoice at the opportunity.

-What is the possibility of a Modular Death Star Playset?

A series of sets that allow the customer to build a playset outward left or right, or upward stacked upon each other, in a cube style that offers a fan the chance to build and infinite playset of the Death Star.

A similar idea could be used for a Hoth Trench set where the trench can be extended left or right infinitely if the customer so wanted.  Remake a scale artillery tower, or a Hoth Rebel Tri-pod cannon, and it'd be a great little diorama series, plus good for army building.

-Will it be possible for the AT-ST or Snowspeeder to see a resculpt so both are 100% true-scale to the films?

The Landspeeder's resculpt was great, and seemed to do well, so I'd love to see these two get a similar treatment to improve their quality, especially since both vehicles were featured more prominently in the films.

-And of course, the obligatory question about Expanded Universe figures, will Hasbro be producing any Expanded Universe beyond the Clone Wars lineup?

I for one would love to see some more figures from the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series of video games, considering how well the original Kyle Katarn and Darktrooper seemed to do, even when offered at an inflated price through the Fan Club.

Some reports from GH.com say the "Vintage" 12 figures are goiong to only ship once, be $10 each, and never ship after the first allotment is gone.

WTF is up with that?  :(  I'm hoping those figures are mixed into the regular OTC line then at a later point, as they are truly "ultimate" versions of main characters.  The best ever.

If Hasbro drops the ball here, they're making one step forward in Star Wars figures, but taking 2 steps backwards by making them "Chase" figures and expensive chase figures to boot.  This news has me bumming today in what should otherwise be a glorious moment for collectors, especially openers.

Well, I like what I see. I didn't really like the Vintage figures at first, but I've changed my mind. I do like how they're rereleasing some figs that I don't have. Everything shown the past several days looks great!

That sucks if that 12' rumor is true. I don't collect 12' figures, but I can see why it would upset you guys.

Am I the only one passing on the "new" vehicles?

Figure production generally starts a year (+/- couple months) in advance.  A line like the E3 line I'd say, is without a doubt, in some preliminary stages of production right now, as Hasbro's probably just developing the core ideas they want to run with...  Possibly character selection's going on, and gathering what may be necessary from LFL as far as references as well.

The production of the films is moving deep into the process now where they're working almost exclusively on visual effects with ILM.  That means costuming's done, and a lot of the CGI work is on its way to being done, so character design is almost complete at this time.  Hasbro should have the fuel they need for the choices they need to make (who is good in the initial assortment(s), and who's out, and who's good for later assortments, etc.)...

I'd expect figures the same time in 2005 as they shipped in 2002.

when do you guys think they will start working on EPIII figures?  Do you think they already have a list of some sort?

This past August, when I interviewed some of the Hasbro Star Wars team in Chicago, they mentioned that 3 or 4 of their guys were in Sydney, on set.  They were getting the rundown of who the key characters were, what they looked liked, along with scan data from companies like Gentle Giant and 3-d animation  wireframe data from ILM.  They were there for about a week or so, and came back to their offices in Rhode Island to start work this past September.

The launch, conceptualization, design and manufacture of the EPISODE III line is going to take longer than a regular, non-movie year line.  Why?  When this line launches, it's likely to issue a line like this:

-20+ new basic figure
-Approximately 4 deluxe figures
-1 or 2 creatures
-1 or 2 small vehicles
-2 - 3 medium vehicles
-1 Large vehicle
-A possible playset
-3 or 4 12" figures
-roleplay items (lightsabers, blasters, etc)

...and all of this is supposed to hit mass retail on one target date.  And don't forget that there will then be followup basic figures that will be released around the time of the movie release, and more merchandise that will follow through the end of the year.

A movie year is a big thing to prep for, and considering the way the 2004 line is shaping up, with so many rehashes requiring little or no new design, it's a given that the EPISODE III line has definitely under development since the fall.
Title: Re: New York - Toy Fair 2004
Post by: Jesse James on February 19, 2004, 12:14 AM
Yeah, Nick definitely makes a good point about the vast # of rehashes in 2004 freeing up the developmental teams to work on E3 dilligently.

A good thing to think of too is that it's the last film as far as anyone knows.  Could theoretically be the line's last big push and it's likely the company's not overlooking this fact, so it may have extra umph to it.  Plus whatever alterations and adjustments needed to be made after the lessons learned from the E2 line and things...  It seems every film's been a "learning experience" for Hasbro as they've come and gone.

Post by: Darby on February 19, 2004, 01:14 AM
Good points.  I'd like to see an all out effort on EP3, not that the last two launches haven't been 'all out.'  Just in terms of the world class sculpting, articulation, and selection we're getting now.

I guess I really didn't miss too much while I was away.  Nothing much shown at Toy Fair that hadn't previously been or covered elsewhere, other than the carded vintage Luke.  Rather disappointing showing from Hasbro in that respect.  I assume no one's heard anything to the effect of them running another "Star Wars only" showing like last year?  That would be nice if they could spill the beans a little more on 4Q'04, or discuss their plans a little more leading up to Ep. 3, and the possibility that the OTC line may continue on up through that point at least.  Oh well.   :-\
