Title: "Vintage" OTC Figures - Are You/Have You Preordered These?
Post by: Brian on February 24, 2004, 09:51 AM
I was just curious if any of you have (or are considering) preordering the "vintage" OTC figures.  Although we have only seen Obi, Han, and Luke (and Leia on the cardback) so far, I think that these look like some of the best modern figures Hasbro has ever released...and to me, are the "ultimate-ish" versions many of us have wanted.  I have been trying to stay away from ordering online for the most part (we don't use our credit card much), and with the help of some nice people here at JD (and a little luck at the stores now and then), I have been able to keep somewhat caught up on the figures this year.  However, with the rumors of these being a "one time deal" and not seeing multiple shippings of these waves, I am worried about missing out on these.  I have seen that EE has cases for preorder (of Wave I), and Kebco also has these figures up for pre-order.  I guess I am just trying to decide what to do, and I am curious what many of my fellow collectors are doing about these figures.  Anymore, I usually try to wait it out on things, because between friends on the forums and later shippings to the stores, I can usually find what I am looking for (or pick it up on ebay or something later).  However, if these are a "one time deal" I am afraid they might become quite pricey after they are released.  Anyways, what are many of you doing about these figures?

Just got an email from kebco this morning saying that these will be added to all members accounts sometime this week.  Due to the rumored scarity of these figs, for $10.49 each delivered to my door, I'm happy.  Sure kebco can be a little slow, but I'm a patient man and can wait for them.

Ordered mine from Entertainment Earth the day they showed up for sale.

I dont think they will be as scarce as everything thinks. Just because they are only shipping once doesnt mean a LOT wont be shipped, at once...

I ordered mine that morning from EE too, the rarity and the fact I want one carded and one to play with display make it a win win :)

Sadly, I think I'll need 3 sets:

1) To Keep Carded, to display on my wall next to the very few other Carded Vintage I own.

2) To Open, to play with display in my loose collection

3) For Work.

Man, I'd love to have a Super-Han and Super-Chewie both at HOME and at WORK to play with er display.

It's a sickness I know.

Jeff

I also ordered from EE.  I know this will make them show up by the hundreds locally now that I placed my order (actually, they will show up after my order has been shipped) but just in case.... :-*

I don't know. I don't think Target or Wal-mart will bite too much at $10 Star Wars figures, regardless of fan interest.

Maybe I'll just get my two sets from EE.

Thanks for all the opinions so far everyone, I've been trying to figure out what to do.  My wife isn't overly crazy with putting a bunch of stuff on the credit card (and honestly, neither am I)...but I just don't want to miss out on these 12 figures.  It seems like it is between EE and Kebco, and I have been trying to decide which way to go.  Entertainment Earth seems to just have the first wave up for preorder (the New Hope ones I think), for $90 for a box of 8.  Kebco has all 12 up for preorder, $10.49 for members, $10.99 for nonmembers.  I was thinking about going with Kebco just because I don't want to mess with the extras, and just want to preorder to make sure I can at least get one set of these...then try my luck at retail for the extras.  I'm generally patient when it comes to orders too, but I will be kind of anxious to get these figures when they come out.  Sometimes Kebco has been fast for me (I got the Yoda/Han/Boba Unleashed and 12" Yoda from them last August or so), but sometimes they are really slow (I got the Saga figures I preordered in April last year..Hoth Han, Mynock Chewie, etc. in November, and I still haven't gotten the Snowtrooper I preordered from them at the same time).  However, I did have them "hold" the Snowtrooper now until my Unleashed Luke/Chewie ships out (all three have been pending for over a month now).  Anyways, thanks for the opinions, it sounds like many of us are preordering these to make sure, now I just need to decide who to go through.  Thanks again.

I wish I knew the case assortments. If every figure is packed two per case in every case, then I'd just order a case for each movie.

That is sort of what EE is saying, 8 figures per case though is all they are officially saying

Will these be coming out all at the same time, or will there be separate waves with cases released at different times (even a few weeks separation)?

I ask because of a (seeming) anomaly with EE in their shipping rates.  Basically, without adding $13 to my shipping rate, I can only order one of these cases at a time ::)  So I can go order one, but if they put up the preorders for the next two (presumably) waves and they hold them back until all waves are in, I actually end up paying more in shipping than if I order cases individually.

It's a good thing I read your post, I ordered the wrong wave!!  I thought that I had put the OTC wave with Luke,  Han and Ben in the picture in my cart but I put the Dagobah wave of OTC in my cart instead.  I was all happy at getting 12 figures for $64.99 (even though there were dupilcates of some).
So I went and ordered the correct wave.
I am a little confused as to the pricing though.  8 figures for $89.99 (hopefully one of each) but still short 4 and then 12 figures for $64.99.  Aren't the ones included in the Dagobah wave of Han, Chewie and Vader the same ones that will be in the Original Trilogy Vintage Figures Wave 1??  or is the Original Basic Trilogy Han going to be different??

I think I need a spreadsheet to keep all this straight, with pictures to boot!!  :P

I too need to put in a preorder I guess.  Not that I want to, but if I missed out on these figures, I'd kick myself forever.

If they do wind up being some of the more sought after short-run figures from Hasbro then I'll never forgive the company personally.  To me Hasbro will have solidified itself as making some of the stupidest decisions for a toy line that any company has ever done.

With that said, they've given me cause to do a preorder which I haven't done since the Rebel Fleet Trooper wave of POTJ's run, as I anticipated a shortage of that wave at the time.  Sadly, it seems these Vintage OTC figs will be (at least for a time) difficult to find, even at $10.

Some have said that the pricetag will make them available in good quantities, but I recall 300th Fett moving pretty well, and he wasn't shorted in his production run that I know of.  These may prove much the same.

I really wish they had the entire breakdown and which wave will be what.  Did someone mention there would be 3 waves of the original 12 but packed 2 of each figure per case?  I buy from EE all the time but I'm still debating on this one.  I want to wait it out but I have a feeling I may miss out.  Anyone have further info on the assortment breakdown ??? ??? ???

It is confirmed they will be released in three waves: 1 ANH, 1 ESB, 1 ROTJ. Only one shipment each, and then they're gone.

Going by EE, it looks like 8 figures per case, and since the figures are all of pretty equal popularity, Im going to assume it's 2 per figure.

Jadesfire: The 8 figs for $89.99 are the ANH Luke w/ cloth, Ben, super poseable Han, and Leia.  I assume this will break down 2 per case.

The 12 figs for $65 is the Dagobah wave with the repack Cantina Han in there as well, I think.

I think you guys are wise in pre-ordering.  Myself, the pricetag and uncertainity about availability and the whole idea, really, has settled it for me.  I won't be buying them.  Money is tight as well.

This is of course without seeing Yoda, Vader, or the Endor Han, so updates as warranted.   ;)

Thanks for clearing that up for me Spuffy.  Looks like I have to wait for EE to post the ESB and ROJ wave then.

I'm still debating on ordering the Falcon though, I think I'd be able to snag that easier than the figures.

I'd wait on the Falcon too, speaking of which I have a POTF2 Falcon still MIB, I was thinking of unloading it to pick up the new better one.  Anyone want one :P

I preordered the first wave when it first hit EE.  Hopefully I will get the chance to preorder the other two as well.

Hasbro addressed the shipping of these "vintage" figures, but it didn't totally clear it up for me at least :):

Question: How will the Vintage figures be distributed?

Answer: Wal-Mart, Target, and Toys “R” Us, among others, are all planning to carry them in multiple ratios.

Multiple ratios, does that mean multiple waves as well?  I guess I'm just curious if these are going to be "miss them and tough turds" the way it sounded before.  Also, I see they don't mention re-releasing them on regular cards...but I suppose they wouldn't do that since it might endanger people skipping the $10 versions to wait for the $5 ones.

It sounds like most of you are going the preorder route, along with the fact that Entertainment Earth seems to be the popular choice.  I have never ordered from them before, but I don't think I have heard anything but good things about them.  I also have never ordered a "case" before, which kind of scares me because we usually don't put that large of amounts on our credit cards if we don't have to.  In the past I have ordered/preordered through Kebco (because of the single figures), but although I am patient...my recent orders have been really, really slow.  But, I have gotten pretty much everything...eventually.  I keep holding off to see if we find out that these won't be as limited as we have heard, but from what I have been reading, it is really just pointing to one shipment, although unclear how big of a shipment it is.  I just get this feeling that they might be tough to find regardless of how many, since they might only be coming once.  Figs such as Vader, Fett, Yoda, and the Stormtroopers especially.  Actually, with the lineup of characters, they could all be popular buys for casual fans and collectors alike.  Thanks for all the opinions everyone, I might have to bite the bullet and order a case (if the wifey doesn't care :P)

BBTS has them fpr preorder too, though I haven't gone to check the price yet. You can order sets instead of cases, if ye are interested in that.

All BBTS has up for preorder currently is the first wave, priced at $44.95 for the set. They also have the vehicles and some of the other OTC stuff up for preorder too.

I'm gonna rely on retail.  No sense in forking out a ton of money for extras that I don't need/want.

I ordered 2 cases.  This may actually be one of the few times that I leave something "Carded".  The other case is for trading purposes in case I miss something down the line or maybe even some Customs with the Luke, Han and Obi-Wan.

I just wish they'd do a case of the Stormtrooper.
