Title: Lots of Stuff This Year...From a Certain Point of View
Post by: Brian on June 3, 2004, 04:04 PM
While reviewing what has/will come out this year, and figuring out what I need to (or am going to) pick up, I got to thinking there is quite a bit of stuff this year.  Granted, much of the stuff is re-carded, re-hashed, re-released, etc....and I'm not a fan of that either, but just looking at what we have/will have the opportunity to get in the year 2004...and its a pretty big number, and believe me when I say I feel very sorry for you completists:

Saga - 21 Basic Figures
Saga Ultra - 6 New, 2 Re-released
Saga "Hall of Fame" - 12 re-released figures
OTC - 7 "new" figures
OTC - 31 re-released figures
VOTC - 12 all-new "ultimate" figures

I may be forgetting a few things, but that's 91 figures for the year...not counting the following:

Clone Wars Animated Figures - Target Exclusive (8 figures)
Multi-packs - Skirmish at Carkoon, Naboo Final Conflict (?), Endor Ambush
Target Cup/Figure Sets - 5 of them
Jedi Council Screen Scenes - 4 additional sets
DVD Commemorative Packs - 3 sets, 10 figures total (repacks)
Vehicles - Red Leader X-Wing (Saga), Darth Vader's Tie (OTC), X-Wing (OTC), Millennium Falcon (OTC), Tie Fighter (OTC), Sandcrawler (OTC - Diamond Exclusive),  Y-wing, Slave 1.
Unleashed Figures - 10 planned for the year (including Clone variant)
12" - 6 figures that I know of (Obi/Jawa/Garindan, Vintage "3")

I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting, and granted much of these items are re-releases or items that I might skip for one reason or another...but that seems like a whole mess of stuff this year.  I'm not saying its good necessarily, as I would rather see it somewhat toned down in favor of more new sculpts...but it is a lot of stuff to pick up for those of you that want one (or more) of each.  I guess outside of the re-releases, we are still getting 40 "new" figures this year, not counting the repaints in the OTC re-releases.  Also, hopefully there are a few more surprises awaiting for the last part of the year.  Anyways, sorry for the long post, just something I was thinking about today.

Edit: Roughly (not including the DVD sets, don't know price) that is around $1300 potential to spend if you buy one of each of everything.

You are absolutely right, there is a lot of stuff out/coming out in 2004.  Just a lot of it is rehashed stuff that it seems 99% of us collectors already have, and the distribution sucks.

A lot of the stuff that has come out has gotten to be a tad frustrating.  I remember a few years back in the POTJ days I wanted a few of the rarer figures to be re-released (it seemed everyone at the scum forum said it would never happen) like Ishi Tib, Ree Yees, Pote Snitken, holo R2D2, CT Stormtrooper, hooded Leia, Sio Bibble, Naboo Royal Security, etc, but I never thought we would see the Cantina Han rehashed so many times over and over and over and over...

We also just don't seem to get enough stuff that would be in demand with all of these rehashes.  And where's the damn damn playsets?

I think I will be saving a lot of money this year, but will still spend a fair amount.

Thank you.   ;)

Despite all the rehashed stuff, it's still gonna be an expensive year just for the basics (for a completist).  Granted, I probably won't be buying two of most of the rehashed stuff (figures, ships, DVD sets, etc.), unless there's some kind of change to it, or it comes in a nice window box (ships).  Otherwise, just one to keep packaged for the stuff I've already got loose.  Extras though on any army builders, including ships.

But in regards to a lot of the griping about this year, and the lack of new stuff - I think we've had it pretty well for the first half of this year (Saga), getting a new wave of figures to track down pretty much every month.  We're just developing a negative vibe now for the remainder of the year, with so many re-releases, which will significantly reduce the fun for all the "loose" collectors out there.  Only having 7 new figures on tap for what currently appears to be a solid 6 month period, is definitely enough to bum many a collector out.

Carded completists will still have their hands full, however.  I think for the most part, despite the rehashes, the beauty of the new OTC card designs is going to make it a pretty enjoyable period for a lot of the carded collectors.  For those of us who pretty much buy at least one of everything, rehashed or not, we'll be just as busy and consequently poor chasing all this stuff down as always...

The bottom line is that NEW stuff is always better, always much more fun - for everyone.  But unfortunately after nearly NINE solid years of pumping out figures and ships, Hasbro's starting to run out of choices, and good ideas.  So I think the future holds a lot more rehashed product, which will put a damper on many a collector's collection.  With the exception of the new Ep. 3 stuff on the horizon, this is just something we're unfortunately going to have to get used to with the remaining life of this line.  A few all-new figures mixed in sporadically with a lot of rehashed stuff.

Just hope that Hasbro doesn't isolate so many loose collectors that they don't have enough left to sustain the line for another 2-3 years...   :-\

Yeah $9.99 seems so high on these, but I know I want some of them for sure to open - Han, Leia, Vader, 3PO, Lando so far, not too hot about the Luke, Obi Wan and Stormtrooper at this point.
