Title: Kilborn Calls It Quits at 'Late Late Show'
Post by: Matt on August 13, 2004, 09:34 PM
Saw this on Bloody Disgusting (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=496&e=1&u=/ap/tv_craig_kilborn):

LOS ANGELES - Craig Kilborn has decided to quit CBS' "Late Late Show" after five seasons, leaving the network to find a new host for the hour that follows "Late Show with David Letterman."

"It was easily the greatest job I've had, and CBS was very generous in their offer to re-sign me," Kilborn told Daily Variety. "But I simply want to try something new. I can now focus on writing and producing different television projects I haven't had time for."

Not one to pass up a gag, Kilborn added: "And this is cool: I will continue to wear makeup in my everyday life."

Kilborn had drawn solid ratings for CBS since he took the time slot over from Tom Snyder. Since 1999, the audience had grown 34 percent to this season's average of 1.7 million viewers.

He likely will wrap up his tenure by within a month, according to a source close to the production, Variety reported Friday. The program is produced by Letterman's company, Worldwide Pants.

CBS, which learned of Kilborn's decision Thursday, had no comment on his replacement, a CBS spokesman said Friday.

There was immediate speculation that Conan O'Brien, whose contract with NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" has more than a year to run, might be a candidate — if he could eventually could end up with Letterman's job.

Industry speculation has it that Letterman is likely to exit late-night TV before Leno does.

Kilborn was the original host of Comedy Central's "Daily Show" and had a role in the 2003 film "Old School."

. . .And millions of people will continue to watch Conan.

Go back to ESPN, Kilborn--you suck.  But please, don't go back to the Daily Show.  (Like they'd have your smug, pompous, unfunny ass back, anyway.)

Agreed.  Kilborn was okay on the Daily Show, but John Stewart is a million times better as a host.  Buh-Bye Mister Kilborn!

Couldn't agree more with both of you. He can rot. I always thought he was just this glue that held the Daily Show together with his humor, then came to the realization that it wasn't him, it was the writing staff that did it, and Jon Stewart was even better. Kilborn is a tool. His arrogance might have come off as funny when he was younger on ESPN, but now, he just plain sucks. Bye bye, lamer!

And  because he was in Old School... doesn't change a thing. He sucks.

He should have quit 2 years ago.

He's no heir to the Letterman throne.

My Kilborn-watching policy mirrors my Leno-watching policy:

Watch Kilborn/Leno only if Conan/Dave have a particularly lame guest on, and the Kilborn/Leno guest is either a foxy babe, or a music act I like.

As for Kilborn's role in Old School:  He played a pompous, arrogant, unfunny *******.  Man, what a stretch that must have been for him!

Not too sad to see him go either, my wife and I have always been Conan fans anyways.  I really thought that Kilborn was funny when he was on Sportscenter, and then I decided to watch his show a couple of times (the Late, Late Show) when he started hosting there, and wasn't impressed.  We had a couple of friends that went to a taping of his show while in California (tickets were free), and they said they couldn't believe what a jerk he was in real life.  Thought he was much "bigger" than he really is the way it sounded too.

I liked him for any reason that he was a huge Wolves fan (being from the area)  Can't say I ever watched his show though, Make Mine Conan!

Maybe there will be a surprise return to Sports Center on a more regular basis?
