Title: OTC Wal-Mart Exclusive Carry Cases
Post by: Jeff on July 13, 2004, 10:30 AM
Seems like it.

Hasbro announced today that they'll be showing off Wal-Mart exclusive C-3PO and Darth Vader carry cases at this year's SDCC booth.

Yea!   More re-hashed goodness!  ::)

Once upon a time, the GH Seer, The Swami, predicted these may come with a figure as well, but no official confirmation on that.

Anyone gonna actually buy these?

Not me... unless they do have pack-ins which are new, but somehow I highly doubt that.  :(

I agree.  I won't be interested unless the figure is "unique".  It would be a good time to offer that unreleased Bespin Capture Vader.

Pass...Plano Tackle Boxes are much more practical

I may buy them :-[

They are rehashed vintage carry cases, but they are mint condition rehashed vintage carry cass.  If I'm only displaying them rather than using them for their intended purpose, wouldn't mint be better than risking ebay and getting some pile of crap for my money?  After all, so many sellers on ebay are completely honest when grading vintage material (no, the arms don't hold a position and sure, the weapon is a repro but there's not really much paint loss, other than the hands.  And feet.  And head.  but no doubt in my mind it is easily c9.5) ::)

Besides, odds are they will go on clearance for maybe 25% of their original price.  Yep, I'll be picking them up.

This just in from Comic-Con!

C-3PO case includes Cantina Han and Mechanic Chewie!

Darth Vader carry case includes Carkoon Fett and Stormtrooper!

I wish I could be more excited, but more repacks = me no buy :(

Even though I will pass on this crap, it just pisses me to no end that Cantina Han is yet released again ???What is this the 5th or 6th release of this figure? I loved this figure when it was first released in the Commtech line, bu now I loathe it just for the fact that it is everywhere. Hasbro has definitely run out of ideas.

What is this the 5th or 6th release of this figure?

Sadly... it's more like #7 for Cantina Han.

1 - CommTech carded
2 - 2003 Saga carded
3 - 2004 HoF carded
4 - 2004 OTC carded
5 - Target Figure w/Cup set (wave 2)
6 - Sam' Club OTC Falcon Pack-In
7 - C-3PO Carry Case Pack-In

And we probably haven't seen the last of him either...

:(

Didn't they just make a superior VOTC Cantina Han?  B.S.

Does anybody know which Stormtrooper it is? I'm guessing it's the Commtech/HoF/OTC version.

I'm going to be passing on these. I need no more duplicates of those figs.

I'm picking them up, because I'm stupid like that.

I always thought those things were pretty spiffy back in the day, though the only carrying cases I had for my SW figures were the Laser Rifle and Bandolier.

Couldnt really make out the pictures that well on the case but here is a question.  Were any figs shown in the case which have not been released yet, or were any more rehashes in there?

They're more rehashes. 3PO comes with Mechanic Chewie and Cantina Han (again) and Vader comes with POC? Fett and the CT Stormtrooper, a figure which we could all use more of, IMO.

I will probably pick at least one of these up as well.  I always wanted one as a kid, but never had one (probably one of the few, I know).  I had the Falcon and the Chewie Bandolier that I used to haul my figures/weapons around.  I know I often read/hear that the Vader case was a dime a dozen in the vintage days, and it didn't even hold the figures all that well, but for some reason I just thought it was cool.  Anyways, I'll probably try to pick the Vader one up for sure, maybe both, we'll see.

I got the PotF2 3P0 as a kid and think a Vader would do nicely next to it (too bad it's not electronic; I don't need room for figures). I don't mind getting a Boba or a Stormie either. Those are two figures I can always use in a scene. As for Han  and Chewie with the 3P0 case? Please, give me a break! ::)

Here's the stormtrooper from the Vader case. It's the kitbashed TRU 4-pack version with Sandtrooper arms:

* New waves of the C-3PO and Darth Vader carry cases with different bonus figures are planned to arrive in stores late this year.

Is that really necessary?

of course it is. this way people who are completists will have to buy the same case - and the same figures - more than once. what's the matter with you jared?

You shut up, Jersey boy.  Stop antagonizing us freaks, dammit!   >:(

Yeah, I cringed when I saw that news...  I generally (OK, always) collect anything with a visible packaged figure(s) in it.  I had a hard enough time swallowing the idea of potentially getting both of these cases here, with the 2 "exclusive" figures displayed in each.  Now that there's gonna be packaging variations with the included figures, I'm not quite sure what in the hell I'm gonna do...   :-[

Damned Hasbro...   :-X

Picked up an opener today from Walmart. Strange that something so seemingly insignificant like a carry case could be such a well of nostalgic memories. I really love having one again, finally.  :)

Here's my question though - the backside of the case (uh, the back of his head) is a coarse texture, unlike the slick black plastic of the rest of the case. Is this a design thing, or did I get a funky one?

Just curious, but did everyone eventually see these carrying cases?  The two Wal-Marts here in Lincoln never had them at all, nor the "display" areas that they were set up on (with Galactic Heroes, etc.)  I guess they weren't necessarily something I "had" to have, but I wanted to pick up at least the Vader one, for nostalgia-ness.  I never had one as a kid, and always wanted one, so I thought I'd get one for the heck of it.  Could probably pick up a vintage one on ebay about as cheap though :P.  Anyways, just wondering if everyone saw these in their areas or not?  I know we don't have nearly as many Wal-Marts, etc. as some of you, but neither of ours had them at all.

I saw them at one Wal-Mart, they had quite a few too last time I was there.  The rest of the Wally Worlds here are the armpits of Wal-Mart...and that's saying something

The Walmarts here have been a bit iffy on these -- either they seem to have an abundance of them or none at all. When they initially hit, I was able to fing them in 3 seperate stores on those display palettes with no problem. The next time I saw them in any different of a setup was on OT DVD Tuesday, where a store that didn't have them previously put them into a big wire bin.

I've only seen these cases at one Wal-Mart around here (i don't hit them much since they're not good for new stuff right now), and the one WM they are at they actually have sold well.

They went from having a huge aisle display of these to having like 4 total (3 Vader and 1 3PO).  I'm surprised by that myself, but a lot of OTC things have sold oddly well...  The DVD 3-packs are non-existant here except the ANH one...  I never did get my ROTJ one. :(

WIth that said, they're not something that will sell over and over I don't believe...  This is the type of thing I can see a short run of them going well, but if Hasbro keeps pumping them out they'll have trouble selling the extras.  Just my take on things anyway.

I caught them on the last road trip to North Dakota/Minnesota we were on.  Back late August or early September, whenever it was.  Checked in at 3 Walmarts and all had the big ole display with the GH's and OTC figs.  The bins were full, so it must have been about when they arrived.  I did pick up the Vader one for much the usual reasons - nostalgia.  Could easily get a vintage one but I thought these were well packaged, two quaint figures and no risk of getting a piece of crap from an unscrupulous ebay seller.  Plus I actually got to see it in person before buying it, a fair rarity for me.

Unlike Scott's armpits, the Walmarts in Fargo/Moorhead/Grand Forks aren't all that awful, they're pretty standard.  That means I hate setting foot in them, but they are more like a boil on Matt's ass than an armpit kind of thing.  I also found a Vader and Yoda VOTC in them, so I had little to complain about really.  Target is much preferred, of course.

For some reason its a Twin Cities Metro Area thing on Wal Marts, you head outstate or out of state and they become tolerable and well stocked for the most part.  Their inner city bretheren are the boil on the boil on Matt's ass

Well, as an update, we drove to the "south of town" Wal-Mart this weekend, and they had several of the carrying cases there.  I actually had the Darth Vader case in the cart, but in the end, ended up putting it back.  Spent quite a bit lately, so I'm holding off for right now.  I also got to thinking about it, while I'd really like to have one (for nostalgia I guess), I guess I don't really "need" it.  I started thinking, as a loose collector, what I would actually do with it.  I'm not going to use it to carry my figures around ;), so otherwise it would basically just be sitting there in our office.  Space is at a premium right now, so I'm holding out.  I might end up picking one up eventually though....but right now I think I can better spend the $22 in other collecting areas.

Any word on what the next figures included will be? I want to buy the 3PO case, but don't want to get a Cantina Han with it.
