Title: DC Direct Figures
Post by: Brian on December 2, 2004, 08:48 AM
I didn't see a thread for this company/line yet, so thought I'd start one.  I really know very little about the line, but I did pick up my first ever DC Direct figure yesterday (via the mail).  I got the JLA Superman.  It basically looks like this version (although the picture here is "technically" the Superman from the original Superman group of figures.  The one I purchased came with the American flag, and did not have the "angry" face variant that showed up in the JLA line from what I understand.  Anyways..looks like this:
I've always been a Superman fan, and from what I have seen and read, this was the best action figure of the character that we've seen so far.  I got it via Tower Records.com, if anyone is interested.  Although the articulation isn't too bad on this particular figure, it (along with the rest of the line) is lacking when compared to Marvel Legends.  However, I have to admit that the figure itself looks great.  The sculpt, paint applications and pose really make for a nice looking Supes.  Looking at the back of the card, the rest of the JLA figures are a little bit tempting as well.  Much of DC Direct's product has been tempting to me over the past year or so, but I've stayed away mostly due to price and availability.  Anyways, do any of you collect anything from DC Direct, any comments on what you have (or would like to have)?

You have no idea how many times I've thought about diving in this line...both with those JLA figures AND with the Super Friends 2 packs that came out a couple of years ago

I think I asked some of the guys at GH who are more in to DC figures but I think it would be cool to collect Comic Likenesses of the Super Friends that have been made so I could display them with my Marvel Legends.  This is because most of my DC love is due to that show (never really read any of those comics) Cartoon based figures wouldn't do for this since I would like them to look like Legends

I almost bought those JLA figures a couple of times but just have never pulled the trigger...and I wouldn't necessarily need some of those B-Listers of the Super Friends, probably just:

Superman
Wonder Woman
Batman
Flash
Green Lantern (old school)
Hawkman
Robin
Aquaman

And from the Legion of Doom:

Lex Luthor
Riddler
Solomon Grundy
Bizzaro
Braniac
Sinestro
Scarecrow
Captain Cold
Black Manta

The other option would be to collect Modern Equivalents of the Super Powers figures which I never owned but played with many times at my buddies house...uh Brian, don't tempt me like this :)

I know what you mean Scott, I've been tempted by pretty much the same figures you had mentioned.  I grew up on "SuperFriends" and also watch the new Justice League (now "Unlimited") show, and that is where I really know the majority of the DC characters from.  I grew up reading Superman and Batman comics, so those are givens with me, but the rest of the JLA line is tempting to me as well.  Here's some tempting pictures :P, isn't it better to dive into a line with a friend Scott? :D Just kidding.

One thing holding me back:  The price of Hawkman, he only came in a two pack and that goes for $80+, no way

You can pick up a set of those JLA figures pretty cheaply (around $50) which isn't too shabby, I don't know who that Green Lantern is, I'd get the classic Hal Jordan Version though (which is new isn't it?)

I forgot I'd also want a Penguin and Joker too...

Super Powers Line (http://www.toyotter.com/sp/figure.html)

Of those I'd buy DC Direct Versions of:

1. Superman
2. Green Lantern
3. The Flash
4. Batman
5. Robin
6. Hawkman
7. Aquaman
8. Wonder Woman
9. Red Tornado
10. Martian Manhunter
11. Firestorm
12. Green Arrow
14. Darkseid
15. Lex Luthor
16. Brainiac
17. The Joker
18. The Penguin
24. Shazam!
25. Cyborg
29. Samurai
31. Plastic Man
32. Mr. Freeze

I'd Skip:

13. Dr. Fate
19. Steppenwolf
20. Kalibak
21. Parademon
22. Desaad
23. Mantis
26. Golden Pharoah
27. Cyclotron
28. Orion
30. Mister Miracle
33. Tyr

That's only 22...OK shutting up now...

DC has always been tempting to me too, but the relative lack of articulation to go with the ML stuff keeps me away.  There are some really nice pieces out there, but I don't need something else to collect, do I?

I was into DC comics.  When I was actively buying comics, I bought all the Batman titles, Superman, Green Lantern, Catwoman and then whatever caught my eye.  Prior to that we read a ton of comics at my cousin's cottage at the lake when it rained.  So I was a big fan of Aquaman, Hawkman, Shazam, Green Arrow and others at the time.  In fact, most of the comics were DC rather than Marvel in my youth, with the exception of Spiderman comics.  Still, when I got older, I was much more into Marvel and remain much more a fan of that company's characters.

I of course delved into the Batman line and they are nice.  I was tempted by the Red Arrow figure at toyfare and now I'm tempted by the Green Lantern (Hal Jordan was always my favorite) they have available.  But then again there are lots of toys I find tempting out there, but have to force myself to stay away from.  Room and reality dictate that necessity.

I bought the Hush figures and the 'angry' JLA Superman, but that's all I have. I will pick up the next two series of Hush figures, and I'm thinking about the rest of the JLA figures too.

I never was much for DC besides Batman and JLA. I do love the Superman and Batman movies, though, and, like Scott, I loved the Super Friends cartoon, though for my age group, Super Powers.

Same here. I wish they'd rip ML and do a nice super-articulated Superman and Batman two pack... The prices that I've seen for these things are too high for me to even take a second glance, which is really my main complaint with DCD.

Thanks for the link there Scott, I was looking at that last week too....and it makes it even more tempting.  I'm happy with my Supes for now, but it sure would be nice to have some more of those Justice League members.  Nice looking figures, especially all grouped together like that.

Prices are a bit high, but they seem to have come down in the last few months.  I've been eyeing them for a while, and only recently picked up a few (starting with the Hush Batman).  I'm a big ML fan, but I have to say that I actually prefer the dc direct stuff.  Sure they're not as articulated, but in many ways I think that's a positive thing.  More and more it seems to me that the articulation of the ML line is really detracting from the sculpt.  I would rather have a figure with less articulation that looks great.
Title: Re: DC Direct Figures
Post by: Ben on January 27, 2005, 03:30 AM
The bitch about Marvel Legends is the toys are overengineered to uselessness. I've found with the DCD toys I own that they have articualtion well enough for the character represented. That's all one needs to ask. There's little point in 45 points of articulation when some joints don't stay in place or move at all. :-\
Title: Re: DC Direct Figures
Post by: pakledjim on May 17, 2005, 07:20 PM
Up until recently I only bought a few of the DCD figures that I liked and could get for 10$ or less. I was able to get Cyborg, Starfire, Modern Starman, Wonder Woman & Wionder Girl and Kid Flash. As you can tell I'm a Titans fan. Sometime a go I was at a Collectiables show where they had the box sets of Batman & Robin, Superboy & Supergirl and Joker & Batgirl for 25$ each. I couldn't pass them up. Since then I've found my self buying more and more. I picked up the Golden Age reen Arrow & Speedy for 10$ and just recently bought the Alex Ross figures for 10$ each and the Penguin & Catwoman, Superman & Lois Lane sets for 20$ each. I also bought the modern Teen Titans figures and the Green Lantern figures, but I paid full price for them.
I'm looking foward to more of the Titans, Lantern and Ross JLA as well as the Crisis on Infinite Earth series.
I completely agree with you inadvertent imitation and drewlam, although I wouldn't mind a little more articulation in the Dc figures I think they look more like their counterparts then do the ML figures. I can barely get some of the ML's to stand due to loose joints.

Well, I caved in and ended up picking up a DC Direct Kilowog for two reasons.

1) I decided my GL Line Up wasn't complete without him
and
2) I heard about this guy at SDCC:

As a Looooooooong time fan of Green Lantern, I can't believe that I finally will have a shelf with action figures of my top 3 favorite GLs - Tomar Re, Kilowog, and Salakk.  It's like I just won the Green Lantern Lottery or something.   ;D

I guess I'll just have to start wishing for a few more now... how about Katma Tui to go with John Stewart!

Congrats on the pickup Jeff, I could definitely seeing a big GL fan like yourself wanting Kilowog.  DC Direct continues to put some really neat stuff, and I'm always tempted to get a few more figures here and there.  I'm tempted to get into some of the Superman stuff further, and I'd also like to pick up the JLA Flash figure (and maybe, eventually, the rest of the JLA).  Too much spending elsewhere right now, but hopefully eventually I can get to these.  Pretty nice looking stuff overall it seems, I know I'm quite happy with the Superman figure I have here on my desk :).

I'm still doing well avoiding DC direct.  I think I've come to the realization that most of what I want would be feeding directly into my fanboy persona ::) and I don't think the wife is going to be inept enough to not pick up on that.   :-[  Zatanna, Black Canary, Catwoman,...   Oh sure, I'd like to have a Green Lantern and a Green Arrow too, but let's be realistic here.

So, what you're saying is you'd be VERY interested in the upcoming Catwoman from the Knightfall line-up with her very big... hair.  :-X

Yeah.  I think it was last month's Toyfare that had the DC direct preview.  There were lots of nice figures in there (double entendre intended) and I was scoping out the DC Direct figures at stores here.  But they're about $20 a piece and most of the um, nicer, figures you need to preorder to even have a shot at.  Since that leaves stores stuck with the dregs from a case, they only sell them as sets here.  Can't say I blame them.

I'll go through the Toyfare later to see which figures interested me just so I can mollify the fanboy image, if only a little.   ::)

I took a gander over at wizarduniverse and here are the figures that interest me right now:

Justice League Flash

Aquaman and Black Canary

Joker

Thrillkiller Batgirl :o
(http://store1.yimg.com/I/wizarduniverse_1852_36828381)

The classic silver age stuff is really nice too, but far too pricey for me to get into it as a side line click me to look (http://store.yahoo.com/wizarduniverse/clsiagedese.html)

I'd also probably pick up a Hal Jordan GL figure to round it out.

My DC days were about equal to my Marvel days early on.  I've mentioned before when we got shuttled off to the cabin at the lake (Aunt and Uncle's place) on rainy days we'd read comics.  I had my hands on a massively beaten copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 at the time too (cover gone, numerous ripped pages).  It was later on that I really got more into Marvel in my late teens.  But I got a ton of joy out of DC comics in the early years and those characters were some of my favorites (Catwoman included).

Well, this is a little off topic...and belongs in the Justice League thread most likely, but with the Green Lantern talk earlier I thought I'd post it here.  I don't know if you saw Jeff (or are even interested), but there is a Green Lantern 3 pack coming up in the Justice League Unlimited (http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/sdcc2005/images/mattel/lanterns.jpg) line from Mattel.  Like I said, not sure if you care, but thought I'd post it just in case.  I'm a fan of this show, and have a few of the figures, so I happened to come across this in the coverage (from Julius Marx).

Yeah, that was great news from SDCC!  I can probably pass on the Shark (I hate when they "re-interpret" Silver Age villians ::)) and the Manhunter as I've skipped bost of the villians (except for Sinestro).

As for the GLs included in this wave, I'll probably pass on Guy Gardner too (unless he's in the Yellow Ring Costume) because I've got the previous "bowl-cut" version they made.  Salakk though, now that's what I'm talking about!

Just for the heck of it, here is some pics/coverage (http://afigures.com/g/?mode=album&album=2005_SDCC%2FDC_Direct%2FDC) of the DC offerings coming from DC Direct in the future.  This was shown at Comic-Con (coverage and pics by TNI).

I wouldn't mind getting a Lex Luthor to go with Superman, the one shown above doesn't look too bad to me.

I picked up a Hush figurine. It's absolutley fantastic, though I only wish they had given him interchangable hands so I could have him hold 2 batarangs, or even include a hand with two batarangs. It's an awsome figure true to the comic though.

Just curious, for those of you who buy/collect the DC Direct figures, how does Amazon come through with these (if you've used them?).  I know that Amazon hasn't had the best track record lately (Unleashed, Marvel Legends, Lord of the Rings, etc.), so I wasn't sure.  They have a Superman figure that comes out this month (actually September on Amazon) that I thought about preordering, but I didn't know how reliable they would be.  Has anyone here preordered/ordered DC Direct from Amazon before?

I've never used Amazon for DC Direct pre-orders, but I have used them to buy things once they are in stock.  It's always worked out pretty well for me that way and you don't have the hassel of the pre-order.

Just picked up a couple of the Justice series 2 figures (Batman and Aquaman).  Batman looks pretty nice, though the decision to give him pupils is a bit strange.  Aquaman is a big surprise - very nice figure.  Although I'm not sure I really like the metallic green, on the whole he looks great.
I also just saw pics of the next wave, and the Joker looks fantastic.

I saw those Justice Series 2 figs at the comic shop last week, and they did look kind of spiffy.  It stinks that DC Direct is just so high priced though.  They make some nice stuff, but I just can't afford the majority of it.  I did pick up a Superman/Batman: Public Enemies Superman figure a month or so ago, but that's been the last.  I just liked the design of it, and it was something a little different for my shelf of Supes figs.

Actually the place I've been picking up my DC Direct figures from charges pretty close to the price of ML figures at TRU.  I think my ML nightcrawler was $12.99 from TRU (canadian), while the latest Justice figures were $13.47 each.  I know in the past DC Direct figures were pricey, but they really seem to have come down in the last year.

Only 2 weeks until Toy Fair! I can`t go this year, going to miss seeing all the

I picked up Zatanna, Green Arrow and Hawkman from the Identity Crisis series.  The figures are nice looking and I've only opened the Green Arrow figure.  These are ok for what I want (cheap statues) but they sort of suck from some lack of quality issues. The paint is less than perfect, a not uncommon issue.  But more disappointing is the hands and the accessories.  After seeing what can be done with an archer in the ML line, this is a letdown.  The arrow heads don't fit properly in the quiver, they're loose and flop around, never mind that they are just a little raft of arrow tails, not individual arrows.  His hands won't hold the single arrow included (all one of them) and barely hold the bow as well.  I actually prefer Green Arrow over Hawkeye from a comic book perspective, but the Marvel Legends Hawkeye figure is just so much better executed than the Green Arrow figure is.  Same cost for me too, so it's an even bigger loss.  Were it at a lower price point I could maybe accept some shortfalls. :-\

Is it gone yet?   :P

So, what you're saying is you'd be VERY interested in the upcoming Catwoman from the Knightfall line-up with her very big... hair.  :-X

Consider this purchased :o and worth every little penny.  I also picked up the Bane from this series and it's much nicer than the current Mattel release, just a monstrous figure, along the likes of the ML Hulk figures in size and weight, just as it should be.  The Knightfall line is really well done and I did manage to avoid picking up others, but that Catwoman.... :P

Anyone pick some of these up lately?  I snagged some from Alex Ross' Justice League 3.  Grabbed Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy :o  I'll let my daughter pick between this version of WW and the Red Son version, both are very well done.  I passed on the Joker, though it is extremely well done as well, probably the figure from the series with the most WOW of the bunch.  But I didn't want another Joker, so I left him behind.

I wanted to get the Joker from that series, but all the pieces that my local comic shop received were spoken for. So I settled for a Man-Bat from the Rogues Gallery series.

I've been getting all the heroes from this line.  I missed Black Canary, and am really kicking myself for that.  Then I passed on plastic man - not a character I'm interested in.  I did pick up the new Joker though.  Really nice figure.  Like you Brent, I've already got a bunch.  But to me, this one is the "definitive" Joker so far.  Looking forward to Martian Manhunter in series 5.

Galaxy has the Black Canary still in the store, or at least did last time I was there.  Steep though at $19.99.  I think there's a new DC Direct version of her coming as well.

Hoping the Green Arrow figure from this line is what I hoped for out of the other line :-\

Just picked up Shazam and Zatanna today, nice figures and I'm happy to have them, but they're the least impressive of the Ross figures.  Paint is a bit sloppy, something I haven't had much of a problem with in past.  Zatanna is basically rolling her eyes in perpetuity.

I also set aside the angry version of Superman from Series one.  No idea where the guy got it, but I'll pick it up next time I'm in.  And yeah, I'll open it :-*

Just checking on anyone's thoughts on the recent Batman figure from the Crisis line.  I just picked it up and it's a pretty nice figure, but it's also a bit of a disappointment.  Lately DC has been doing a number of "artist specific" figures, where they're sculpted to match the style of the artist.  Generally I'm not a fan of this, but I'm a big George Perez fan so I thought it would be cool to have a batman figure done in his style.  From the promo pics I thought the figure looked pretty nice, so I ordered it.
Well, if it weren't sold as a Crisis (Perez) batman then I would really like it.  But it looks nothing like a Perez batman - especially the head sculpt.  Also (and I don't know if I just have a mispaint), on the promo pics and the box they show Batman having the black shading or whatever it is on his head.  In my figure, the head is all blue.
Has anyone else picked this up or seen it?  Is mine a mispaint, or did they produce them like that?

I hadn't heard yet that Sinestro was coming with Despotillis, the sentient virus from the SC.  Very cool!

Plus, I was totally digging the new "GLC" based 12" figure -

There will be a pile of e-tailers that sell them individually, not to mention local comic shops and Suncoast stores.

Just keep an eye on scifigenre, they are a good source for the DCD stuff (http://www.scifigenre.com/browse.aspx?sid=W112GO01JNY0PR0&nSubCategoryID=202&nExpandToID=1446) since you get your comics there anyway.  The figures were just solicited by DCD on Monday and it usually takes scifigenre a few weeks to add them to the site after they are announced.

I saw that line and I have to say that figures based on Silver Age Perez work are going to be reeeeeeeally hard to pass up.

I already see great Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Flash figures and there are rumors of Martian Manhunter in Wave 3.  All I'd need is Hal and Black Canary and that would be the start of a very sweet SA JLA set up.

(gah, I need to stop thinking about this line asap before I decide to buy  :-[)

Title: Re: DC Direct Figures

Yeah, I thought those figures were tempting as well.  I started to look into more DC Direct stuff until news broke that Mattel was going to get the license for the entire DCU.  Now I'm hoping to build my JLA (and Batman universe) from that line.  With very nice versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman (and Nightwing, a personal favorite) already done, and figures like Hawkman, the Flash, and a rumored Green Arrow/Black Canary wave on the way - we should have a good start there as well hopefully.  These figures do look pretty spiffy though.

Post by: JohnH on October 24, 2008, 03:00 PM
But a little more articulation would have helped

It's for this reason I can't get into DC Direct's stuff.  Most of it looks really nice, but the combination of limited articulation and stiff poses sucks away all the excitement me.  They do make some interesting characters though, no question there.
