Title: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: Mainland05 on March 29, 2004, 01:54 PM
Was browsing Yakface.com and came upon this, it states the Private Universe, has heard that we are getting Episode III - Preview figures this Fall/Winter 2004.  Read Here:

Sorry for the lack of posts recently due some problems in my personal life... Thanks to Pete, Dean and all the TPU staff for their kind works and for keeping the site alive!!!

Anyway enough of that and back to normal business...

The Target glasses have started shipping in the US - Darth Maul (Episode I) and Obi Wan (Episode IV) are out with the next wave expected to ship in mid April.

A question that's often asked is how many of a particular figure is made etc. Well I've been given the heads up on this one directly from Target, along with the first news of a preview figure for Episode III!!!

There will be 15,000 of each Glass and Character shipped to Target stores acroos the US. At the moment the current shipment includes a box of four glasses with 3 Maul's and 1 Obi Wan but this will reverse in due course.

The final wave of glasses will include an Episode III glass shipping in early summer with an exclusive Target (as yet unknown) preview Figure. You read it here first! This is further confirmation that Lucas intends to announce the title of Episode III very soon to tie in with the release of the Classic Trilogy on DVD!!!

As if this wasn't enough I'm told from a reliable source that to coincide of the Classic Trilogy on DVD (which features an exclusive Episode III preview) there will be four Episode III preview figures released in October!!! What a Year!!!

As yet there is no news if these glasses will be coming to the UK - they HAVE been offered to Argos, TRU and Woolworths so fingers crossed!!!

Which figures, do you think we will get as a preview set?

4 Episode III figures being released in October, oh yea!!!!

General Grievous as a Preview Figure?

Not to sure about having core charcters as sneak peek!

This would be neat, if true.  I was wondering if they would do something like this (particularly with the glasses) to complete the set.  I could see Grievous be one of the preview figures as well, since they are really starting to promote him already (cartoon, Insider cover, Hyperspace stuff).  Also, if you look at the some of the preview choices in the past (Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Zam Wessel) he kind of fits into the line.  I could also see some sort of a droid, the new clone/stormtrooper, and maybe a Wookiee warrior of some sort.  It would be nice to see some preview figures this year though....Episode II's preview didn't hit until a couple of months before the release, if I remember right.  At least, I think that's when I found mine.

I betcha Grievous is one - an overhyped character who's probably barely in the movie.  See Boba Fett in ESB, Mace in TPM, and Zam in AOTC.

If they stick to what they did for AOTC, then expect something that Hasbro claims is in the movie, but barely noticeable, that for all intents and purposes it isn't.  I still can't find find R3-T7 in AOTC.

Yeah, Grievious is a lock.  Too bad he's so boring.

General Grievous
Obi-Wan's Astromech
Stormtrooper/CLonetrooper Hybrid
Darth Vader :-*

Hmmm...

* S P O I L E R S *

Be warned...

My 4 preview figures would be:
1) Gen. Grievous (Droid General) - Just like Jango, give away the baddie since he'll be in the preview AND we'll probably get like 15 different versions of him.

2) Wookie Warrior (possibly even Chewbacca!) - Woo-Hoo!

3) Episode 3 Clone Trooper - just like Episode 2

4) Droid - I don't know if they'll go Obi-Wan Astromech (since fans voted on it) or maybe a new battle droid model.  Either way, I'd vote on a droid for the 4th.

Then, I'd throw in a Darth Vader w/Episode 3 Cup to go with the Target set.

Just my guesses...

Jeff

I like your pics Jeff.  A Vader with the glass would be ideal.  Needs to be a core character (ok, I know, Maul's dead) and to not have a glass with Vader is silly.

Not so keen on the clone/stormie for preview.  We got hosed up here last time on those, so hard to come by.  Presumably they'll milk us for all we're worth with multipacks during this movie, so probably sweating over nothing.

I bet anything the preview figures will be as follows:

Grevious with some sort of action feature (Most likley a pull string so he can rotate fast. THe string will probobly be attached to one of his lightsabers)

CloneHybrid

Droid

Anakin/Other Jedi.

I sense it.

I really have to go with the Grievous thread because he is unique to Ep. III. Jango and the other two previews were uniquie to Ep. II. If that pattern is followed, I think Darth Vader is out as is Chewie.

Greivious
Combo Clone/Storm Trooper
Some not so well known character

Hmmm... let me see

I think Grievous is a given for this too.  As for the others, I would like to see:

- Wookie Warrior
- Nemoidian Soldier
- Clone/Stormtrooper

I think that army-builders would be awesome for this personally.

I think that if we took the vote we would find Grevious and the Clonehybrid trooper to be among all of them...although I would definitely like to see a wookie warrior, I do not think it likely...the Vader is probably the most likely and possibly a droid but I don't hold my breath for a Wookie...disappointing and I hope I am wrong

Well, Jango Fett was a preview figure.  It's not unprecedented.  I think Grievous will wind up filling a similar role to that of Jango Fett.

A nice list...  I just read that too Scott.

It's nice to see the Coruscant Wave's still the Coruscant Wave and not preview figures.  Gives hope for "Something more" to be unveiled in the coming months and things.

A wookie warrior's going to go over well methinks.  I hope it makes for a GOOD wookie custom base without "things" on him.  I've wanted a Chewie with removable bandoleir for that very reason (I'm hoping for the VOTC, but the more the merrier anyway).

Another Astromech should do well, so long as it's a poseable one.  I've found the posed ones without retractable legs are often not popular.

I have been thinking that Grevious would've been a preview figure for ages now.  He's the big pimpin' figure of this line, I can see it coming.  Deluxe, and about 6 basic versions of him in a single freaking year.  :(
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: Darby on May 21, 2004, 11:54 PM
Yeah, Grievous is the Maul/Jango of EP3.  Hopefully they'll make one decent version of him, and I'll stick to that.  The list of Sneak Preview figs sounds good.  The Wookie Warrior is the one I think everyone (including me) will want most.

I do hope they are shipped a bit better than last time, though.  I only saw the EP2 Preview figs once at retail, and that was on 4/23.

Title: EP3 Preview wave
Post by: MarkW on July 30, 2004, 12:03 AM
It seems like most of the EPIII figures are coming out in April but as well I see that KEBco Toys will have a EP3 Preview wave arriving this fall.  There is also a Hong Kong release that costs more and later a US release.
First, what exactly are the EP3 Preview wave?
As well, is there a difference between the Hong Kong and US Release?
Title: Re: EP3 Preview wave
Post by: Scott on July 30, 2004, 12:18 AM
I would call the Episode III Preview Wave the first Episode III figures of the line

Galactic Hunter named them to be:

Wookiee Warrior
General Grievous
Astromech
Tion Meddon

There may be more OT and PT figures between this Wave and April, that won't be known until the fall sometime I would guess.

Details on the Episode III figures should start coming out near the end of the year

Action-Figure.com has said too the preview wave will be Grievous, Meddon, Astromech and Wookiee

Not a bad wave IMO. The EP2 sneak peak was similar. EP2 had a droid, a villain (Jango), a warrior (Clone) and another random important character (Zam). EP3 has a droid, a villain (Grievous), a warrior (Tarrful) and another random important character (Meddon).

I'm content with that, especially if the Greivous is a more "clone wars" representation like reported, since rumor is he won't be so CW-ish in the film.

Another astromech.  Yay!

Wookies are cool.

Other guy...  Uh, great I guess.  Dunno him and I've avoided most major plot things, so cool.  Random guys are good.

Sounds like a pretty good preview wave to me too, and about what I think we expected.  Grievous, aside from Vader, will be the "major baddie" this time around, and will be a nice figure to get.  I'm always happy to get a new Wookiee, so I'm happy about the inclusion of Tarfful.  I'm looking forward to picking up an army of Wookiees, should they decide to make them all (or several).  The droid and Tion Medon round out the wave well.  Its funny, I remember really searching around trying to find the Preview wave last time...especially Jango and the Clonetrooper.  I can still see Jangos at TRU from time to time :P
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: Diddly on August 16, 2004, 10:37 PM
This wave sounds nice.

Grevious should be a must buy, since it will probably be his only figure without an Action Feature. I fear that Hasbro will cheap out though, and give us a no-better-than-decent sculpt with limited articulation. Oh well.

Astromechs are always fun to have. Hopefully this will have the "Ultimate" Astro articulation.

Wookiee Warrior? Sounds good enough. Just give him some good articulation. However, I have the same fears as I do with the preview Grievous. Hopefully he'll have good articulation and accessories.

Tion will be good since it'll probably be his only fig. I don't care what comes out, I'll buy it nonetheless.

Anyway, I'm hoping for some surprises.

Were the sneak preview Ep2 figures their own case assortment? Or did they slip in with POTJ stuff? I seem to recall them being a completely seperate deal because of the TRU sku#s that still linger on the shelves.

The Post-OTC case assortment (Sly, etc) box has this printed on the side:

SW E3 BASIC FIGURE ASST W1R1 05

So I guess they'll not be ******* up the retail channel with tons of sku shifts and different cases to order up to ROTS.
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: Morgbug on October 7, 2004, 09:41 PM
The preview figs for Ep II were indeed an entirely different line.  I can't provide an case numbering information, but the cards were of course totally different and they shipped in their own case.

I remember it distinctly because it was one of those rare times when I walked into a TRU at just the right moment.  They'd just put out four full cases, it was awesome.  Remember this was just after Canada had been shafted on the last two waves of POTJ so finding figures from a new line so quickly was great.  Sadly that was at a time when TRU up here was charging $11.99 per figure :o  Still, it was so cool to find them.  And they never brought in another shipment either, which rather sucked the big one ::) >:(

The case assortment for the Episode 3 Preview wave...

SW E3 BASIC FIGURE ASST W3R1
Case Assortment: 85172000B
4x Figure #1 - 85362
4x Figure #2 - 85365
2x Figure #3 - 85363
2x Figure #4 - 85361

So, the question is, who matches up with who?

I'll guess 4x Greivous, 4x Wookie, 2x Droid, 2x Tion Meddon.

:)

I'll guess 4x Greivous, 4x Wookie, 2x Droid, 2x Tion Meddon.

I'll second that as the logical casepack. Being Hasbro, those numbers are all probably reversed.

So I'm assuming the Wookiee is Tarrful?

I saw these last night.  That Wookie is pretty sweet looking.  All look to be very well done. I wonder what the fourth fig will be?  Wasnt it rumored to be some type of Astromech? I am assuming that this is the Preview wave that will be out soon.  Possibly Christmas?

I just saw those as well, and I think that they look pretty nice.  From the protos and now these that we have seen so far, it could be a good year for ROTS toys.  Granted, we haven't seen the "action feature" figures yet, but from what we have seen, it looks like we could be in for a good year of collecting.  I wonder how long it will be until we start seeing these on the pegs.  The earlier the better :).  Thanks for the links, they all look great to me.  Really liking the Tarfful figure, I hope that we see all sorts of nicely done Wookiees next year.

My initial reaction is that these look fantastic!  The General looks really nice as does Tarful.  I see Tion packs some weaponry.  I wonder if his character is in some action scenes?  I don't know since I have not been 100% up on the spoilers lately.  Anyway, yes, between these and those early prototypes it looks like the ROTS figures could be something special.  Some good articulation on the figures we have seen so far.  I'm ready for more pics and this movie!  :)

So far so good. 6 figures revealed and no horrific action features. Good to see that elaborate, discreet articulation seems to be a standard. I'm shocked that has happened. What an improvement over the statues we got as AOTC Preview figures.

You guys realize we're just building up way too many positives on these, and Hasbro is going to knife us all in the gut with Collection 1, right?

As long as there is Collection 2 counterparts for everything they do in Collection 1, I'm OK

The fact we have Crap Outlander Anakin and Crap Arena Padme means I'm still not OK with 2002 Saga (and I don't remember who it was that said the Lightsaber is cool on Outlander Anakin...I still think its the stupidest thing Hasbro has done PS (Post Snoova))

God, I'd blanked Outland Peasant Ani from my brain. What a sack of suck.

Hasbro has to have learned from the backlash on that thing to be more creative/discreet with their action features. Those first Saga figures were a disaster. I  just have a feeling we will have some character casualties that will drop into the resculpt list and stay there for years because of C1. I mean, we still don't have a definitive Mace after like 3 Saga versions because of gimmicks.

What about the Mace from the Screen Scene? I know it doesn't have a cape or lightsaber, but it didn't have a gimmick. Besides being stuck in a 3-pack, I mean.

These Ep. III figures are awesome. Can't wait to own Grevious. :D

These look just as good as that wave of prototypes we just saw last week.  Color me impressed.  Very impressed.  Awesome articulation, great neutral sculpts, good paint.  Just please, please, let this new quality translate into further figures from the OT!

I'm not such a fan of the prequels, but at least Hasbro appears to finally be pumping out some really top notch product.  I just wonder why it took them 9 years to finally figure it out.   ???

Yes and no...  Yes because it's there, but no because I think the feature it's accomodating is quite cool.  I'd actually kind of dig more sabres with that...  Maybe not so prominent/large, but it's a neat enough sabre feature.

Implies a removable blade too...  I loved those, even though some were breaking their figures because of it.  I haven't broken one yet, so it's a feature I highly enjoy.

Well, yeah - that's kinda a tricky thing.  It certainly doesn't look too great when the lightsaber isn't attached to the figure's belt (or wherever), but at the same time, it's cool that you CAN attach it to their belt, when it's not being "used".

But in a perfect world, Hasbro would be so wonderful as to give us a lightsaber hilt both with, and without, the little attaching peg you see there.  That way you could attach it if you wanted, or have it being used without seeing an eyesoar of a peg...

But I am glad to see they're going back to the removable blade too.  Like Jess, I always enjoyed that feature a lot, and never had a problem with it myself.  Just have to be real careful with them...

These do look nice, and I really like the looks of Anakin's starfighter as well.  Can't wait for these to start to show up.  I'm really enjoying all of the early looks at things thus far, but it just makes me want to see more :).  I saw on that little preview "pamphlet" shown at RS, that there is a Wookiee supersoaker.  Might be a fun "odd collectible" to pick up.  Always wanted a supersoaker in the house anyways, for spraying the nephews when they visit and such :P.

Yeah, not out in stores yet, but fully flushed out in official Hasbro pictures...

They look pretty good, much better than Episode 2, I agree.

Great stuff...

The Anakin fighter, if to-scale, could be incredible.  I was always a little disappointed in the E2 fighter that it was too "action feature" layden like all the figures, and they passed on it having working rear landing gear.

If it did it'd have been a very accurately scaled ship.  Damn that "attack mode" feature though, that wasn't anywhere in the film.   ::)

I think that anikans ships looks far too predictible, I mean I wasn't surprized at all with its shape. I didn't and don't like the looks of the jedi star fighters either. I have always thought that the naboo fighters were awesome looking. So with that being said I will only buy 1 LOL ;D

As Jesse mentioned on the front page, the latest issue of Star Wars Insider has some nice images of the four preview figures, as well as the preview vehicle (Anakin's Starfighter).  Everything looks really good from what I can see, and I can't wait until these start hitting the pegs/shelves (supposedly by Feb 1st, 2005).

Also of note, they have started a "feature" within the Jabba's Collection section (that covers Hasbro's products) entitled "Making the Figure" and covers the production of the ROTS figures from start to finish.  Within this first installment, they specifically mention the action features..."This topic is a source of much debate within the Star Wars collector community.  Relying on what it had learned about the Episode II lineup - mainly that kids enjoy action features while collectors aren't as fond of them - Hasbro took a new approach when conceptualizing those feature."  It also goes on to say that "squeezing the legs together will activate most action features, which means no more buttons protruding from their bodies to mar the aesthetics."  It also says that figures will be "amply articulated" to "fit inside vehicles".  Just thought that might be of interest...you can check out the entire feature in Insider # 79.

Well we shall see if the figures can actually fit in their vehicles or not this time around.  They also claimed the figures could be fitted into vehicles before by saying you just needed to  "work them into" the vehicle.  Ha-ha!  Ok Hasbro.  Whatever you say.

Yep, it's a fact.  Kids love the action features (rolls eyes).  Regardless it sounds like an interesting article.
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)

The making-of documentary's really good for people to learn the process they make figures by.  It's been posted on the net before how it's done, so most folks enjoying hte hobby know the general routine, but the Insider's showing a lot of stuff unseen to most before so I think the article will be informative for the majority.

I've seen every production process's step at one point or another for various toy lines (including Star Wars), but I still found this article pretty enjoyable.  It's neat seeing the concept drawings and how the designers envision the toy much the same way film-makers draw out a sequence of events on storyboard for a film.

it's a neat read even if you just check it real quick at the newsstands.  And it's only part I of a multi-part mini-article, so check it out if you have time.

The shots of the preview wave that we've seen so far online don't do the figures justice, judging by the shots in Insider.  Really nice stuff shown there, and the Wookie and Greivous look ten times better than before IMO.

The Jedi Fighter (Anakin's) I'm not sure on.  R2 looks like he just plugs into this ship, but that it doesn't have a bottom to it and like R2's lower half is just gone...  This makes me think the ship is way underscale, but I don't know enough about it to say at this point.  If it is though, I'm disappointed because NO fighter should be underscaled given what is put out by other companies.  Plus this thing DOESN'T look big in any shot I've ever seen, so I don't know.

Just seems odd.

Oh, and Obi's Astromech has the hoses on his feet.  I didn't notice that till now, but he's a really nice looking figure.  Best astromech ever possibly.  :)

I was thinking that R2D2 didn't look just right in the pic in the Insider too.  He definitely looked like he was cut in half.

As for the preview droid - yes the hoses on the feet look great.  Too bad the only R2 like that (at least that I can think of) is the VOTC R2D2 - and I don't like that figure at all.

Sail Barge R2D2 is the best of him to date IMO.

Found 'em at a local Walmart.

5.88 per figure, on pegs filled with 10-12 Greivous, 10-12 Wookiee Warriors, 6 R4-G9, and 3 Tion Meddon.

Got some pics coming, sorry if I'm overloading the page:

Wookiee Warrior:
Bigger than VOTC Chewbacca, articulation that nearly matches it, and removable armor that makes him a nice generic Wook for customizers.

(http://members.aol.com/jareedo/wookac.jpg) (http://members.aol.com/jareedo/wookcomp.jpg)

R4-G9:
Seems to use parts from the VOTC R2 on the legs, and a new 3rd leg mechanism -- you rotate the dome to retract it into the body.

(http://members.aol.com/jareedo/r4pack.jpg) (http://members.aol.com/jareedo/r4_1.jpg)

General Greivous:
Ball sockets at the shoulders and head, torso twists at chest,  with twist sockets at the elbows and knees. Cape is removable.

Tion Medon:

Indeed, those are great pictures Jared, thanks!  I dig knowing just how great a figure that Wookie's turning out to be.  So that's NOT the officer Wookie named Tarful then?  Just a generic one?  Very cool to me...  I just hope he's abundant enough to find.

I wonder if Chewie's sort of a runt for his species?

Tion Medon's cool I think, nonetheless.  As cool as any "senator" type figure can be.

Greivous is really growing on me, and the fact the first version they make of him's pretty poseable and "neutral" and I'm already getting hyped to see more of that guy in Clone Wars and E3.  Rock on Star Wars!

My disappointment for R4 is a surprise...  I don't like "features" with the middle leg, and wish Hasbro would've just done a basic re-release of the R2-Q5 body...  To me, that's astromech perfection.  I dig the colors though (a first), and the planet's neat too.

I just hate pissing with what I felt was perfect...  VOTC R2 doesn't even compare to all the astro's that used the R2-Q5 body, IMO.

My one complaint on the Wookiee is his head color doesn't blend well with the upper torso, in fact all of the different pieces look to be different shades of brown.

Grievous looks amazing though, I'm not exactly sure why they needed to introduce him to the story when they had Dooku but he looks like a great design and a great figure

R4 (How lame is it that they call R2 units R4?) is a step down from previous models of R2's released so in that sense R4 is a disappointment

Tion is a great figure for what he is and I agree with Jesse, he's basically a "senator" I don't expect much else

Got a set sans R4 tonight (One of the local guys just happened to be there scooping up the LAST R4, so we chatted for a few then parted ways).

I have to say, the Wookie is hands down the best figure out of the wave, and that's saying a lot because I'd say all 3 of the others are VASTLY superior efforts to E2's Sneak Preview wave, except perhaps the R4 compared to E2's R3 unit.

Anyway, the wookie simply rocks all.  He's huge, he has completely removable armor (at least it appears to me his body armor or jewelery would come off if you worked the braids around it), and he holds a rifle with TWO hands!  Yes, Hasbro has actually seen that it's important that a figure with a rifle hold it with two hands...  Nice!

My only gripes are the big squares cut out of the soles of his feet, the sorta mis-matched paintjob on the fur at every separate piece (the figure almost looks like it was painted and then assembled, rather than the other way around), and that his helmet doesn't fit him well (falls off, so better loose than too tight so it won't fit on I figure).  Oh, and his knee joints are VERY loose.  Mine are anyway...  They almost bow under his weight if posed the wrong way.

Still a grand figure...  Something to behold.

It does appear that they're packing Tion Medon and R4 less to a case too.  Not to raise panic, but R4's were all gone and Tion's were down to two when I got there while Wookies were all over the place as was Greivous.

I'm easily "in" on I'd say 10 more wookies...  Dare I say this is one of the best army builder figures ever made by Hasbro, so hats off.

Tion Medon's what I expected.  His cane's cool...  He has a rifle that, unless it's used in the film, is a bit out of place as an accessory...  He's really quite poseable for what he is actually, and he's a top-notch sculpt with great deco.  He's dull though beyond being kinda freaky looking.  (BTW, the Wookie's articulation is pretty nice too.  Shame to see Hasbro dropping ball/sockets for angle-cuts in some places, but he's still lightyears ahead of anything offered in 2003 or prior, save for a SA Clone).

R4 I only got a glimpse of so my opinion stands.

Greivous is odd...  His arms arne't as poseable as I can tell they could be, and as much as I'd like.  He's got a great saber though, and apparantly someone at Hasbro fibbed to all the people who asked for "single-piece sabers" to come back because he's got the removable blade going on.

His robe actually CONNECTS to his chest via pinholes in his chest (very small and unnoticeable) and 2 small pins on his robe.  Pretty nice.

He's still sporting a lot of articulation and 5 ball/socket joints which is great...  His saber seems like it was intended to plug on him, but I can't tell if it does somewhere.  He's a little tough to pose I'm finding, and I sorta am hoping for a more poseable one in the basic line.  If not, this is a happy substitute...  This guy gets you pumped for E3 though, lemme tell ya.  Makes you want to see him in action.  He just oozes evil, and I was one of the many who didn't care for the concept at first.

That's a mini review...  Figure goodness I tells ya!
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: SilverZ on January 22, 2005, 05:37 AM
Totally agree with your reviews, Jesse.

I think they're holding back on the Greivous figure. He seems really basic and the articulation can go a lot further. If the one that ships in the regular line has the splitting arms and some better articulation, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd even be ok with the omitting the cape to help costs, as long as they left the pegholes in the chestplate to attach the Preview one.

Add to the list of minor gripes with the Wookie figure the fact that the arm sections don't blend into one another very well, meaning in a sculpt way, not paint apps. The parts seem a little out of scale and don't mesh together as smoothly as I'd like. Not a big deal, but hey.

I managed to grab another Wook tonight (which is the start of a really bad army building habit I think). I want to try to get the chest armor off him so he's completely generic.
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: Jesse James on January 22, 2005, 06:01 AM
I started, then stopped, but I think if you just work the braids under the armor one at a time going around it, you'll pop the armor right off.  I do believe it comes off though...  Which rocks to me.

I love the figure though...  It's really great.

I like how he actually holds his rifle or just stands there, or stands howling, or runs, or whatever you want, and also you can have him AIMING his rifle like he's really shooting it...  I mean, it's such a minor thing to so many people but yet it's such a HUGE thing for the figure to do this flawlessly but still look great in many other poses.

That's what it's all about to me...  They nailed it.

Now if they'd do a Hoth Trooper, Fleet Trooper, ENdor Trooper, Scout Trooper, Snowtrooper, Sandtrooper, Bespin Guard, etc., etc., etc., etc. just like that...  :)

Well it gets better: The head is a modern ball-socket and pops right off and on again. So I now have a second Wook au natural. Since there's at least two more Wookiees coming (Tarfful and a 2nd "Wookie Warrior") we might have the chance to do some super-easy headswaps and armor switching to create a quick army. Really genius of them.

If he had VOTC-style Chewie elbow joints, he'd be 100% perfection in an army builder.

So I now have a second Wook au natural.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was Mark Hamill on the "Empire of Dreams" documentary on the OT DVD set (and I'm paraphrasing):

"Of all the things to be concerned about: the Wookiee has no pants."  :D

I'm really looking forward to seeing these figures.  Grievous looks really cool, and to hear that the Wookiee is even larger than he looked (to me at least) in the photos has tripled my anticipation for that figure as well.  And any figure with a pimp cane is bound to be cool.

I'm really confused by Hasbro's astromech sculpting these days though.  In my opinion, they had the perfect base body for astromechs that could have been used at least once a year to make generic and/or R2-D2 figures until the end of time, and they seem to have all but abandoned it.  The last time I remember them using that particular mold (excluding the Star Tours stuff) was the Hoth R3 unit from the TRU four pack.  In the last year, we got a totally new mold for the VOTC R2 (which, foot-wise, was a cool change), a step backwards for the OTC R2-D2, and now an apparent third mold change (the third leg, which seems to go back to the Episode I R2) that does nothing to improve the astromech body.

My pointless complaining aside, can anyone with R4 say whether the hologram kind of "hovers" out in front of him, or does it actually touch the surface of whatever he is standing on?  I ask because if it's the former, I was curious how long it would be before R4 started having a "droop" issue.   ;)

Sounds like these are hitting all over the place, and over in Iowa, so maybe we'll get them here soon as well.  Might have to go check Wal-Mart this afternoon, although last time I was there the "section" for Star Wars was bare (no pegs even), so I'm not getting my hopes up.  Hopefully by next week everyone will see them for sure, and it sounds like for the most part the figures are getting glowing reviews, which is always nice to hear.

On a side note, we haven't heard too much about Anakin's Starfighter.  Although it has apparently been spotted (and bought) overseas, haven't heard of anyone seeing it in the US.  Is this coming later on, or have stores just been better at keeping this in the stockroom?

Made a run to Wal-Mart over my lunch break today, and they had loads of the Preview Figures as well.  I wouldn't have seen them, but I just happened to continue on down the action figure "aisle" past where the Star Wars, LOTR, and Marvel Legends figures are, and they were on pegs all by themselves, across from the action figures, with some assorted other toys.  I was surprised how small the new packages seemed, neat in a way...not so neat in other ways.  Figures look good though, might have to go back and get some more of those wookiees sometime.

OooooH!

Got my set today thanks to a friendly Californian!  So far, I am really digging these figures.

The Wookiee - Wow.  Great figure, very girthy.  I love him and hope they do a few of the other Wooks from RotS!  I love the articulation, but agee with others who brought up the poor realization of his fur colors into the figure.  A nicer paint wash and he'd be perfect.

The Droid - Very nice, really digging this one.  Maybe not as nice as using a different R2 base, but still a great little figure!

The Alien - As other have said, the most boring in terms of articulation/etc, but for a senator-type figure it fits the bill.  Great looking sculpt and interesting design.

The General - Wow.  Simply stunning articulation and great sculpt.  Makes me wonder if I'll need either of the other 2 upcoming figures since this one is a home-run!

I find the plastic used on Grievous to be a little flimsy. But I still like it the best out of the preview wave.

Weird... a Walmart I went to tonight had about 12 each of the Wookiee and Grievious, but no other figure... are there some assortments shipping with just these two figures??

Anyways, the Grievious is pretty good, but I think it's not so cool to me right now only because the THE WOOKIEE WARRIOR KICKS ASS!!!  Got 5 of them so far... need at least 5 more...

THESE WILL BE SO FUN FOR AN UPCOMING PHOTONOVEL!!!  :)  :)  :)

Dont panic everyone.  I went back to my Wallyworld tonight and there were over 60 of these things on the pegs.  A box was also on the floor.  Tion and R4 are the short packs.

It might be worth noting in here that I actually turned these up at a TRU in CA in fairly good numbers late last week, so there's more than Walmart leaking these out before the "official" date.

Just finished fondling my figures and I can't complain about any of the 4.  All of them are homeruns!

What torques me off is that they won't do this same quality for all of the ROTS stuff.  I see no reason why kids wouldn't want to play with these too

Best new feature:  R4 ( ::) I still hate calling this R2 unit R4) and the wind up center leg.  Amazing and it works so well that you can't even see it when its inside the body

I hate the Wookiee coloring but I'm still buying 2-3 more.  Which says a lot that I can overlook the shoddy paint job and admire the greatness of Wookiee Love.

Grievous may be the only Grievous I buy

Tion Meddon is also a great figure.  The headsculpt and nice articulation are great pluses

That's true, but I live in Astoria, Queens, so I'd have to either cut across Manhattan or go through it. Still, I'm going to be heading into Jersey this weekend for a relative's birthday, so maybe I'll see if there's a walmart along the route.

TRU's usually good about not leaking stuff early so I'm surprised they have them too.  Maybe trying to beat otehrs to the punch.  Do you recall the price on them there Jared?

I hoped to find some at my nearest WM tonight but no luck.  I would've grabbed a Wookie and R4 if they had either...  Oh well, guess my local WM read the street date because other than ANH VOTC and a Felipern on the pegs, they really had nothing of note...

I'd dig more wookies, that's for sure.

I'm actually not wild about R4's "feature".  Guess I like the turning head more than one laden to a feature, but I'm sure he's a good figure either way...

impressive to say, but I think standing General Greivous (not easy) is probably the only major negative to any of the figures.  None are perfect by any means, but they blow E2's entire run out of the water in my book.  If this is Collection 2's quality this year, then color me impressed.  It appers to be the case too, so I dare say I'm more excited about collecting this year than I have been in ages.  Figures I finally don't feel that I have to "fix" in some way or another...

Looking at Aayla Secura's images, I'm already tossing the extra AS I got on clearance into my fodder bin for something else.  Hell, I even appreciate the AOTC AS even more now because she's cool for that one kicking pose, and I'll just dig having a fairly super poseable one for any dioramas I ever want to use with her in it.

Life's good...  I just now hope they carry this level of quality into the OT and start redoing things.  I'd take me some Classic army builders as nice as that Preview Wookie I know.  Rebels need that kinda quality, and a Death Star Trooper is sorely needing to be that cool too! :)

None of it have surfaced that I'm aware of...  Anyone else?  Tarful's pic has, and he's looking pretty cool I think too, and maybe reusing parts?  The warrior listed, I almost expect to just be a recard of this.
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)
Post by: SilverZ on January 28, 2005, 12:52 PM
I'm convinced the 2nd Wookiee Warrior is going to be different in some way from the Preview version, even if it is just paint apps, a head swap, or armor variants. Considering the movie cards are exactly the same as the preview cards, they must plan on the two lines mixing together and it would be pointless to ship the same figure so quickly under a different collection and card number.

Oh, Jesse, the price on the previews at TRU were 6.99. Now you can pay a full 1.09 more than Wal-Mart for the experience of shopping in Toys R Us, where they aim to impress with dirt mall K-mart ambiance and service!  ;)

Stumbled upon these myself this afternoon at a Target...honestly I wasn't even looking for 'em (but once I'd heard the April figures had started to leak, I had to at least look...) I was really impressed with the looks of them, and picked up a Wookiee and R4.

R4 can be the standard for astromechs now...just sculpt up an R5-D4 head and get that thing on the shelves already! I'm really impressed with all of the features included:a retractable third leg that wont get loose, wheels that don't make the two-footed pose awkward, an unobtrusive place to plug in a hologram (which could easily become a standard astromech accessory), the extra detail on the foot wires (without paying ten bucks) clicking dome, light-up eyeport (though possibly they could've made that correct like R2-R9's, but that's just nitpickin'). I was fairly sure I'd buy this guy just for variety's sake--I love the astromechs--but this is "an extremely well-put together little droid."

And now the Wookiee. First off, I'd seen the size comparison pictures here, but I was still impressed when I pulled him out of the package. I think that was by design--he actually stands pretty low in the bubble, almost to disguise his height on the card, but when you pull him out, you can see his feet go all the way to the bottom of the package--outside the insert plastic, in fact. It makes for an impressive removal from the package.

His face reminds me of Chewie's wife, his gun looks goofy, his helmet won't stay on. I like his bandolier/armor--especially the fact that it is removable. I may wind up repainting his arms a more even shade. That's the one big gripe I have about this guy--VOTC Chewie's multicolored fur worked well because of the joints used. If the back of this guy's arms are black and front are brown, then how are we supposed to use the angle joints correctly?

As for the packaging, I liked the looks of it to begin with, but in person the lava is a little busy for the eyes. Vader pretty much disappears when the figure is in there. I'm impressed with the cardboard inserts...I had no idea there were two separate pieces in there, they work well, and the big picture cards may make nice little side-collectibles to save alongside those Force Files and Commtech Chips. I can fully see this package being used for non-ROTS figures soon enough--all they need to do is swap out the "Revenge of the Sith" title on the bottom, and it would work.

I may yet pick up Grievous--he looked good. Just didn't feel him at the 6.99 pricepoint. I may even get another Wook, if/when I see them at Wal*Mart's cheaper price. I had not planned on getting more than the droid, so Hasbro has succeeded in reeling me in, anyway. That's a feat.

I snagged a Greivous and a Tion Medon by pure luck and chance. It was a lucky day all around. I got a call back for an interveiw, got to go to dinner, and then we headed out to Wal*Mart. Rather than pay me 20 bucks for shoveling I asked "If they have a couple Star Wars figures out, can I get those instead of money, is that ok?" And with a dash I sprinted to the toy isle, and saw a plethora of Wookie Warriors, one Tion and no General Greivous.

There were 2 fresh cases of Clone Wars 3 toon figures, and a stray CW Greivous on the shelf. I grabbed Tion, and rooted around for the Astromech with no luck. I kept looking at that lone CW Greivous, and finnaly I decided to put it back with the others (all due to the OCD in me.) and I found 2 General Greivous Preveiw Figures.

I'm pleased with both figures, especialy Tions blaster.

:)

I'm back in the buying game gang!

You know, we were at Wal-Mart over the weekend, and I had found the Preview figures there earlier in the week (in an odd area of the toy section, the Star Wars area didn't have pegs up yet).  Now, when we went back this weekend, the pegs were up, but only two Grievous figures were there.  I went to the area where I found them earlier, and they were gone from there and replaced with some other miscellaneous toys.  I find it very hard to believe that they sold out (there were TONS) when I picked up my set of four, so maybe they heard about the Feb 1 release date and took them back in.  Just curious if that is what happened, or if they really sold that well.  I'm thinking about picking up a couple more wookiees once they show again, I've got two so far, but a few more would be ok.

Also, on a side note, do you think we're going to see Anakin's fighter tomorrow?  I don't think we've heard any reports of this showing anywhere in the US, so I'm wondering if it will be delayed a bit.  I'm kind of hoping it will show up, but we'll see.

I was just wondering the same thing. I'm excited to finally get a new ship that's not a lame turd like the Sandcrawler.

SWS.com says they'll have it tomorrow. But aside from those plans (if true) the only place I've even seen shelf tags for the thing is Kmart of all places. You'd think people would be finding these pretty easy by now if the figures have been leaking constantly for 2 weeks. So I think the chances that these have been locked up safe and sound for a strict street date are pretty slim.

I have this feeling we'll all hit the stores and find that not a single thing has changed since today. Empty pegs and pegwarmers. No masses of Preview figures, and certainly no sign of the Starfighter. Then it'll trickle in over the next few weeks.

Except for TRU, who will get it just before Christmas time. That would because they suck. Suck, suck, suck, suck, suck, suck, suck, suck, suckity, suck, suck, suck.

Alright, once and for all, what the heck is WallyWorld??!?!!?! ???

WallyWorld = the Amusement Park from "National Lampoon's Vacation" (a great movie from the 80s).

WallyWorld was the ultimate destination of the family's road trip west, although they visited many famous sites between Chicago and California en route to WallyWorld.  They end up going through a lot of crap to get there, but cling to the hope that it will all be worth it when they get there; however once they got to WallyWorld it sucked ass.

Interesting enough that same description is, to me, the epitome of Wal-Mart.  Everythime I go there, I have such great anticipation as to what I will find when I get there, but upon arriving after going through all the crap you have to go through to get to the AF aisle (smokers, crap in the aisles, too many people), I am always more frustrated leaving said store - it sucks ass.

I believe that is why so many people refer to Wal-Mart as WallyWord.  Well, that and Wal-Mart kind of sounds like WallyWorld.   :P

Jeff

Is anyone not finding these?  I went to a WM and TRU yesterday and both of them had ****.  Not an inkling of this wave.  I would assume that at least one of these figures would be hanging on a peg at one of these stores.  Before you had stores that couldn't read and put them out early.  Now you have stores that probably don't look at boxes to see that these need to put on the shelves.  ******* morons.
Title: Re: Episode III - Preview Figures (SPOILERS)

To be honest, they aren't all that plentiful here either Mikey, although I have seen them.  When I picked up my set of 4, it was a week early, and they were tucked away in an off-aisle at Wal-mart.  At that time, they had TONS, but when Feb. 1 came around, they only had a few each of Grievous and Wookiee Warriors.  Last time I was there, they still had a couple of these two figures.  TRU recently got these in as well, but had 2-3 each of those two figures as well and none of the others.  Target, on the other hand, was stocked pretty well last time I was there (last weekend).  They had several of all 4 at the time.  Other than that, the Star Wars pegs/sections have looked somewhat bare for awhile.  No OTC or POTC to be found at all anymore, a few leftover CW figures (at Target only), and a handful of preview figs.

I'm gonna be locking merging this one up...

Maul, general Q's about "value" tend to go ignored (as this thread appears to have been for the most part), and you can easily ask this in a previously existing thread about Preview Greivous.  You don't need to start another thread for questions of value...

Locked Merged, and keep that in mind for future reference if you would please.
