Title: Jeff's Custom Star Wars Figures
Post by: Jeff on July 28, 2004, 06:26 PM
Well,

I finally got off my lazy butt and decided to take some pictures of my 150+ custom figures to share with you guys.

First Up -

Baniss Keeg:
dead image link removed

My recipe is very similar to some of the FFURG ones I've seen, but not quite the same:
Duros - head, hands, and boots.
FF BSH Helmet Luke - Torso, legs, arms
lotsa painting

I really like the way he turned out!  I think he is my favorite custom figure.   :)

great job, jeff. that's one of those customs i've been meaning to do, just never seem to find the time. it's a fairly simple enough figure to make, and the reults are great.

can't wait to see more  :)

Every garage has one, so the Rebel Alliance must have had one too...

He was assembled from a Jek Porkins, Malakili, and a few other spare parts (including his "torch"). I like the look of the Ringer T-Shirt, has a Rebel Logo on the back of the shirt, but none of my pics seem to want to turn out today :(

Maybe I'll add a few more of my Hangar techs this week...

That's funny Jeff.  Good use of some of the more complex fodder to use up.  Fat guys just rarely translate to good fodder.

The only thing I'd do is change up his pants to match...  maybe shave off that front thing (sash thingie) and make him wearing those big Joey Buttafuoco pants or something.   ;D  Dunno why but that makes me laugh out loud.

One of the things I am planning on doing is re-painting the lower body.  I was thinking of keeping the sash, but giving it more of an "oily-rag" look.  As for the LOL part, well we've got to have some funny unique customs in our collections or it'd just get boring ;)

Took a while for me to come back to these guys, but here is the rest of the Rebel X-Wing Mechanic Staff...

Nikto Rebel Ground Crew:
dead image link removed
Nikto Jedi Head
Djas Puhr Body
custom made tools - grease gun, blowtorch, scanner

Human Rebel Ground Crew:
dead image link removed
Big Builder" Head
Djas Puhr Body
custom made tools - screwdriver, pliers, and two energy cutters (not shown)

I use the gun holsters as a tool belt, and did some very minor re-painting on the bodies.  Nothing like fleshing out my Rebel Hangar scene with a few techs.    :)

Jeff

ps
Note the vastly improved photo skills since last August.  ;)

Maybe I should re-take shots of the X-Wing dude at the start of the thread now that I can actually use the focus correctly?  :P

Jeff, these guys are very cool.  I would suggest possibly doing some hand swaps too, and maybe a bit of a dry brush to make the uniforms look a bit more "used" - but as is, they are still nice.   I really dig the custom tools.  :)

Time for another Jedi update...

Duro Jedi Master:
dead image link removed

Duros Head/Hands
Ep1 Mace Body
Custom Saber

I like the way he turned out - nice OT nod in my Geonosis Arena.  His saber is made from a Cantina Band instrument chunk.

Human Jedi Knight:
dead image link removed

Titan AE Head
Ep1 Jedi Duel Quigon Torso
Duros lower legs/boots (for the ankle holster)

A bit more modifications and painting on this guy.  I like to mix up the easy easy chop-n-swap customs with more intricate jobs.  I did a bit of work on the Qui-Gon body before I used it, but I really like the way he turned out as well!

Yeah, it's hard to see, but one of the 2 does have swapped hands (they are still black/gloved though - from a Biggs figure I think).

As for air-brushing, well I suck at that.  I need a bit more practice on other junk before I mess these guys up.   :-\

As always love to see Jedi customs. You might wanna mix them up and add some paint to them.

Other than that they look great.

I didn't mean "air-brush" - I meant "dry brush" - sorry if I wasn't clear.  by dry brushing, I mean slightly painting them with a regular paint brush, but with just a touch of paint on it to bring out details in their clothes.

I really like the two green energy cutter tools - those look awesome.

These look great!  Like Metal Jedi said, a bit of painting to them could really bring them up even another level.

I like the human Jedi with the blaster holster on his ankle, and the Duros is awesome.   :)

Man, it's been a loooong time since I posted in this thread...  how about an update?   ;)

Sai'torr Kal Fas (Saurin Droid Trader):
dead image link removed

I had to do something with my PotF2 Bossk after I got the Saga one, so I combined him with a little paint and an $2 Ep1 Clearance Rune Haako.

I still need to try to find a nice color match for paint for his hands, just haven't had time to mix up a batch of paint yet to do it.   :-\

I gave him a drinking glass made from one of my favorite customs tricks - it's a push-pin with the pin pulled out.  Without the little metal pin, those push-pin make pretty nifty glasses.   ;)

Indeed a nice job Jeff (and nice to see more of your customs).  May not be movie accurate, but who cares.   ;)

That's a good idea for a body for a Trandoshan/Saurin... I hope you haven't patented your idea, because I'm gonna "borrow" it.

Go ahead!  That's half the fun of these forums, sharing ideas and gaining inspiration for each other's work!

I really like the way it turned out.  Like you said, maybe not 100% movie-accurate, but since you hardly notice them in the movie, I'm not too worried about it.   ;)

ps.
I merged all 3 of my threads into this one to help keep things nice and tidy...

Looks good.  The combination of the head with the scaly-looking robes is perfect.  The pushpin glass idea is brilliant!  I'd been toying with the idea of sculpting glasses and cups - but pushpins it will be!

That looks really good.  I'd maybe try to use the Bossk hands or give him 3 scaly fingers, but really, that's just a minor detail.
If you wanted to match the head color to the hands, why not repaint him a new color?  Who says Trandoshans have to be green?
Great idea for drinking cups, I never thought of that but I see it works perfectly!

Ah, but he's a saurin, not a trandoshan, so his fingers are anatomically correct (I think)!

Jeff they all look great! I really like the Saurin as well, simple but it looks really good. The thumbtack was genius. I may have to take that idea. :) I was thinking of a way to make it even better: use a clear thumbtack and dremmel it out so that it is hoolow like a glass and then you can fill it with superglue mixed with dye (if that can be done) or just use glass paint and paint the inside so it looks like there is liqiud in there.

Time for my monthly update (a bit delayed thanks to a busy schedule):

First up, a simple custom - a pair of Ewoks!

dead image link removed

Wuta and Tamat here were pretty easy to do (they're just repaints) but they fill out my Ewok tribe nicely until Hasbro gives me some more ewoks!

Wuta is a nice tan paint on Wicket body with a PotF2 Wicket spear and a vinty ewok bag.  Tamat is a nice dark brown paint job with the drum set from the Saga Accessory kit and a re-painted PotF2 Wicket hood.

Next up, a couple goons to fill out my Jabba's Palace Diorama!

dead image link removed

Again, more chop-n-swap and/or repainting of existing stuff (as I suck ass at sculpty :().

Gariff (Kubaz Skiff Guard) is composed of PotF2 Nikto Skiff Guard (body) and PotF2 Garindan (head and hands).  A bit of re-painting to get the hands/gloves to color match, but not much else as I really liked the colors as they were.  Gives it a standard uni feel to the garage crew at Jabba's.

Last, but not least, is 5-LOM5-LOM is an old worn $1 vinty "Zuckuss" (aka 4-LOM) that was completely re-painted.  He's an accounting droid who was assigned to Ree-Yees, but unbeknowns to the Gran he's secretly a spy droid for Jabba.  ;)

I'm a little disappointed with the picture.  I tried to do a nice "rusty" paint dry-brush wash to make the droid look used/abused/rusted, but it isn't showing up too well on the black colors.  If you look close at the larger picture, you can kinda make it out the "dripping oil streaks" on his torso though.   :-\

Hopefully I can keep the monthly updates running - I should have 2 more to show in August: AT-AT Commander and Imperial Shield Technician (both WiP).
Title: Re: Jeff's Custom Figures
Post by: Gregorbian on July 28, 2005, 01:55 AM
Nice!  I like the big grin on Tamat.  I think it would be cool to give Wuta a hood (or maybe an animal hat like Logray or Teebo), ewoks look too "naked" to me without a hood  ;)  Of course, that's just something I have to deal with... :P

I really like that Kubaz Skiff Guard - very cool.  I like that you kept the colors on the body the same as the original figure.  The only thing that I would think to do with him is maybe repaint the hood to match the rest of the figure (some sort of yellow or tan).
5-LOM is nice!  I always wanted an accounting droid....

In September?  How about some Rebel Pilots!

Time for my monthly update!  Again, simple head-swaps with minor painting to spiffy up the flightsuits, heads and helmets.  First up, the aliens:

dead image link removed

From L to R:

Gand Pilot - Simple as can be, Zuckuss head plus Biggs body.

Snivvian Pilot - Takeel Head (repainted) plus Jek Body (slightly repainted highlights)

Quarren Pilot - Vintage Squid head plus Biggs Body.  I also took the Squid hands off the vintage figure and added them to the Biggs body (I used metal pins so they are articulated), then painted them black to match the gloves.  :)

And of course, some humans:

dead image link removed

From L to R:

Pilot #1 - Jurassic Park Head, Biggs Body, Jek Helmet.  Hair was painted Black, Helmet a Nice Dark Green to contrast Wedge's Olive Green paint scheme.

Pilot #2 - CW Jedi Head, Biggs Body, Luke Helmet.  I gave this guy a brown drywash to hiighlight his hair a bit, then gave the helmet a quick royal blue paint job.

Pilot #3 - Mace Head,  CS Wedge Body, CS Wedge Helmet.  Added some new eyebrows and a goatee to the Mace head and now he looks a LOT like Capt. Sisko (DS9)!  Also added a nice Dk Blue paint job to the helmet.

Once again, simple customs can be fun!  It's not intricate detail/sculpy work, but it's a quick way to build up my Rebel Pilot squad!  Hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them!   :)

They all look really good Jeff.  I do prefer the Dutch Vander body now to the older sculpts, but I do have to say that all of those look nice.  My favorite is the blonde human pilot from the Jedi.  It looks just like a Rebel pilot to me from ANH.

Good use of the Porkins body too for the Snivvian.

Me too.   ;)

It gives him that "plump" look you'd expect from a pig-like ceature.  I had that Takeel head for a long time, never quite sure what to do with it.  Turned out pretty good with just a minor paint job to liven him up.

Another new figure...

In the meantime, here are a couple new figures to ogle...

Jedi Master Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi:
dead image link removed

I was a little disapointed with the vOTC Ben's Robe, so I thought I'd try my hand at a Ben whose robe isn't waaaaay out of scale.   :P

This Ben was crafted from:
PotF2 Obi-Wan head (w/gray drybrush to highlight his hair)
Flashback Obi-Wan Torso/Legs (with tan/brown weathering and the skirt cut down)
Ep1 Jedi Dual Qui-Gon Jinn Arms
Soft Goods Robe (re-hemmed and recut)

The reworked soft-goods robe is what make him a great figure IMHO.  He might not be as posable as the vOTC, but he fills in nicely in this Cantina scene on my shelves.  :)

That soft goods robe looks great - it's so much more tamed down that the oversized one that comes with the VOTC Ben.  You said the robe was re-hemmed and recut -- did you use the VOTC robe?  It looks like a slightly different material.

It started out as one of those soft-goods robes from one of the Ep1 accessory packs.  I re-sewed it so that the robe fit the particular figures instead of the "one-size-fits-all" that Hasbro gave it.

Never sewed a thing in my life.  Guess it would be nice to know how to though... I've always wanted to be able to actually make a realistic looking bed for Padme's apartment on Coruscant, and I'd probably need to know how to sew to do that.

Great job on the sg Cloak!  It looks much better than hasbro's original version.
I really need to learn how to sew, there are so many things that I need to do (especially since I've been dabbling in 12" scale Star Wars customs).  I taught myself how to braid for the sake of customizing (hell yeah Wookie Braids! :P) so I guess learning how to sew is a small price to pay...

With all the folks working on the Group challenge, I had to go back and re-visit my old Roron Corobb:

dead image link removed

I did some trim work on his skirt and painted some highlights on him.  Not really a new custom so I don't want to post him in the other thread (he's not really Clone Wars accurate anyway), but I did want to show off the improvements/updates that I made to him.

I've finally had a chance to work on some things, so hopefully I'll have some more pictures later this week.   :)

Man, I had to dig to find this...

Guess I better get some pictures taken to get this thing updated.  For now, my first entry for this month's custom challenge:

dead image link removed

Head/Helmet = PotF2 Death Star Trooper
Rest = PotJ Imperial Officer

I was painting/priming a bunch of other parts tonight for upcoming custom figures/projects and I had time to sneak this simple head-swap in as my first entry for the month.

Don't know if you can tell (it's most noticible on the torso), but I did a gray dry-brush/wash on him to try to pull some detail out of the jumpsuit.  I think it turned out well for a 20 minute project.  :)

That looks good Jeff, I did a couple of these before too, but yours looks better.  For some reason mine looks awkard, as if the neck is too long on both of them.  Did you shorten the neck on yours, or maybe make the neck hole on the torso bigger?

Good looking solider there. I can totally see the drybrushing. It does make it look better. Is the head glued on or did you modify the neck post to make it fit?

I never noticed the Roron Corrob before - he looks awesome!  The parts look great together, I might have to borrow this recipe for my version.

The Death Star Trooper is good too.  The grey wash definitely brings out the details.  It's good to see some more customs from you Jeff!

My second entry for this month's custom challenge...

Death Star Squadron Officer:
dead image link removed

Head = PotJ Imperial Officer
Rest = PotF2 Tarkin

I'm setting up a new Death Star Scene in my SW Room and I needed a real Officer for all my jump-suit PotJ Imp Officers.  Since all our "real" Imperial Officers (Tarkin, Piett, Veers, Jerjrrod, Ozzel) are wearing gray, I decided to whip up this guy to create a DS specific Officer.

And another quick and easy project -

Endor Bunker Commander:
dead image link removed

Another simple head swap and paint/deco tweak.  Added the helmet for a bit of flair, like he tossed it on when the Rebels attacked...
