Title: TOMY Remote Control R2-D2 at SWS.com
Post by: DualSaberMaster on June 28, 2005, 05:07 PM
Up for pre-order at SWS.com Tomy Exclusive Remote Control R2-D2 Action Figure (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=103950&ReferrerID=CJADBN-00001).

As of now it is only available for Hyperspace members.  I ordered me some, as these look pretty cool and fun.  They will be available to the general public July 1 st, if they don't sell out.

Cool.  Thanks for the head's up, Ricardo!  Just placed my order for a couple.  One less headache that I was expecting to deal with since that was a Japanese item.  Nice to see SWS.com step up to the plate and give the non-Japanese collectors a shot at this one...  8)

BTW, I'm moving this over to the regular figure forum, since it's a standard sized figure.  ;)

That is cool they are offering them this way.
I have a few ordered from another source, but I like that are offering
these to the US.
I wonder if Kubs will get a shot on there now!
How much is shipping for R2, BTW?

It looks like I'd better rip open my Early Bird Set so that I can get the free 3-month Hyperspace membership to order one.

Dammit, much cheaper than the place I ordered from, but the delivery date looks to be a matter of several weeks later through SWS. I can't wait for this lil guy.

I've got some coming from Japan, but if anyone wants to order an extra, I don't think I'd be too put out to have one more.  I've been wanting this thing since Jeff mentioned it at C3.  Looks awfully nice and I'd be happy to own several.   8)

Hah, I'd like to Jared...

Won't do it, but I'd like to.

I think this is great...  Nice to see something that has had a bit of buzz being offered for an ok price.  I'll definitely nab one even though it technically does stray outside what I'd normally buy.  I love the concept and can't wait to nab one.  Saw someone do an RC Custom droid once a while back with small RC modules...  Pretty neat.

Also, I mentioned in antoher thread, check outthe sale they have, click on the red/white/blue banner and there's some really good deals on stuff like the CW posters($10ea.)
, jap.posters, M&M posters etc.

I ordered one. Its pretty cool. Normally i would have passed but since its in the figure scale, i have no choice but to consider it a figure, so i had to buy it.  ;D Thats my story and i am sticking to it.

Uggh, I always succumb to peer pressure, I think I'll order one.

Junior might get a kick out of it and then my wife won't be so angry at yet another box waiting on the doorstep.

Since the R2 is scaled to match the Hasbro action figure line - I could NOT pass this one up! I'm really happy that the shop.starwars.com has offered this up so you can easily obtain one in the US.

I ordered two of them since I'll definitely want to open one up and play with it, my two little kitties will be driven nuts by the thing!

I'm happy to see SWShop offering this as well, and I plan to preorder it here as well.  Just sounds like a real "fun" collectible, and the fact that it is in scale with the basic line makes it even better to me.

So they had one of these things at the Hasbro Q & A panel down at Comic Con last weekend.  The Hasbro reps were all amped to show it off, and... the thing didn't work.  At all.  They fidgeted with it for a good 5 minutes in hopes of fixing it to show off to the few remaining folks at the end of the Q & A, but to no avail.

Looked real nice though, with a nifty little lightsaber remote and all.  Hopefully they'll work a little better than that when we finally get them in person...  :-\

I was kind of wondering about that.  I saw a couple of pics online of them attempting to show it off, and it looked like the rep was practically pushing the R2 with the remote manually.  It reminded me of when the batteries are low on the TV remote, and I attempt to "throw" the signal towards the TV :P.  I hope that they work a little better than that when we get them, I already have a 3 3/4" R2 that can just sit there ;).

So, in some distant manner, you guys witnessed a modern day, and tiny, reinactment of Lucas's prop guys pissing around with the original astromechs as they would topple over, go off track, break, and just not work. :)

Probably killed the batteries in it...  RC in this tiny scale eats batteries.  My gf's kids got these little RC cars from Radio Shack and they tend to not last real long.  I definitely see possibilities in those little cars though for moving droids.

I want an RC Mine Layer droid from the Sandcrawler now. :)

I have one and I have to say I love mine.  At first it was very hard because I have a very heavy accent when I speak English.  However (and this may just be me) but the damn thing seems to have adjusted itself to me.  I do research in an university setting and have R2 sitting in my lab bench in my lab.  I talk to it and ask it questions as I work and it responds in a positive, negative, confused, or mad way.  I have it play several songs and even do some of the stupid little games.  I paid like $75 for mine but it is one of my favorite things in my collection.  I only wish I had one MIB.

So I cannot complain about mine because it rocks, its like having the little brother I never wanted :P

We`ll, R2 is pretty damn neat!
Little bigger than the 3 3/4 line, but that was to be expected.
The remote houses the sounds for R2, one way they were able to
keep him so small I`d guess.
I have posted pics on my website:

I recently won an auction on eBay for the POTF2 remote control R2-D2 and it is so much fun!  Of course, the wire connecting the controller to R2 is a serious pain in the ass, so I think I'm going to have to get my hands on this smaller (and wireless  :)) version.

Don't know about "doorsteps everywhere", but it arrived at my doorstep this morning.  ;)

Of course, I'm right next to SWS.com's distribution center here in L.A., so it'd make sense that I'd be among the first to receive it.  But everyone else's should be en route now too, so they should be arriving throughout this week, I'd imagine...

These are continuing to show up, as I received mine this morning from FedEx.  Although it is a little pricier than I would have liked at $20 plus shipping, it is quite a fun little toy.  The little bit I've been able to mess around with it, I haven't had any trouble with it working correctly.  Kind of neat, and glad I ordered it.

A co-worker of mine received his today at work and called me into his office for a quick demo.  Needless to say, that's all the convincing I needed.  I ordered one immediately.  It is so friggin' cool!!!  It works beautifully.  One button makes him go forward, the other makes him spin around.  He lights up himself, but the sfx come from the lightsaber control.  I know he's a bit more than I would usually spend, but again, as soon as I played around with him for a bit, I was hooked.  I can't wait to get mine now!!!

Title: Re: TOMY Remote Control R2-D2 at SWS.com
Post by: jadesfire on September 19, 2005, 03:30 PM
I love this toy!!!  You can actually change his forward direction if you turn his front wheel.  You can't make him turn right or left directly but when you press his "spin" button, just let up on it in the direction you'd like him to go and he can actually roam around a table without falling off.

As for the package itself, the top and bottom are held to the plastic by one long piece of tape so you can actually take the bottom piece off, take R2 out and play with him (after you undo the three wire ties) and then package him all back up by re-tying him and sliding the bottom back in the package.  I made the mistake of taking the top off and trying to get to him from that direction and it is a no-go.  He has to come out from the bottom.

All in all - well worth the twenty some bucks I paid and can easily be displayed right back in the package when not in use.

PS:  Both R2D2 and the remote have on/off switches and with a mini screwdriver, you can easily change the battery once it dies out.  I never checked the size but am assuming calculator/watch size will do.

I loves it. The LED light is sooooo bright if you turn the lighs out he virtually lights up the wall he's heading towards! ;D

I guess the only downfall(as pointed out by my daughter) is that he doesn't make that wooooowwww sound like he does when the Jawa's get him or in the xwing(shot) ::)

I tell my daughter that's part of the play that she make the sound for him(which she's pretty good at) 8)

gonna see if I can attach magnets to him to "fetch" pens, paper clips ect ;)

I still haven't ordered one of these ::) but imagine my surprise when I was looking through robby.jp's email list this morning and saw what appears to be two more versions of this little guy :o

I'm not clear about whether they are exactly this item or not, though they did show the Tomy R2 in the same picture for comparison.  I emailed Ryo for an answer on them and whether I interpreted the email correctly or not.

What the hell am I rambling about?  It looks like they are doing two new versions of this RC droid:

R2-Q5 paint deco :o
R4-P17 paint deco  :o

Dale or Jeff can probably scavenge the image when they see the email and upload it.  I can't do that currently.

Pretty neat though and I'll definitely be ordering these guys.

I got a response from Ryo at Robby.jp and these are indeed more radio controlled Droids.  He hasn't seen them personally (release date 03/31/06) but his impression is that they are just the same as the R2-D2 but repainted.

Sweet. 8)

I love the RC-D2 so these two repaints are welcomed...  This little "sub-category" of figures is cool by me.  I'd even dig an RC version of other droids that rolled...  Not anything too small, but something they could do to-scale like the mining droids or whatnot.  R5-D4 would be cool too and you could make him do a donut and topple over just like the real droid.

It'd be cool by me other than the price, but being sorta "premium" items I'm ok with that price even.

The price is much better through Robby.jp, though I don't know what the total is going to be after shipping and whatnot.  I ordered a few of each from robby.jp, if only to help preserve my status over there for the next kubrick series.  I wanted to get my R2's from there as well, but they were out and the preorder was closed by the time I signed up.

If you guys are wondering how the RC holds up to the Hasbro astro's, it's perfect.  Not poseable mind you, but it fits in AOK.  I lovethese as a sort of "sub" category.

I love my remote controlled R2 - like Jesse said, it fits in great with the Hasbro line of 3.75" figures. It physically stands a hair taller than the other R2 units, but it does so for one simple reason - the functioning wheels. If Hasbro were to make the "rolling action" wheels on their astromechs really work with a push, then those figures would stand at the same height too.

I pre-ordered my R4-P17 from the club yesterday and I hope they are going to also be carrying the all black Imperial Astromech (I'm sorry I can't recall it's name, R2-Q6 I think, but I'm not sure).

Down the line, once we get the new R5-D4, I'd love to see Hasbro share the head mold for R5 and then we get a remote controlled version of him.

Oh this is embarassing.

I dragged my ass never ordering the R2 from SWS.com and now they are gone.  Ebay prices are already silly ::) so I'm looking for one or two of these.  I have the two new versions ordered from Robby.jp already, though they won't arrive for months but I'll happily trade either version for one or both for two if anyone has a spare.

Loser.

Brent,

They still have this in stock here (http://store.yahoo.com/robotoys/stwar2d2mirc.html).  Not sure if they ship to Canada.

I finally got my Remote Control R2 from swshop today.  I ordered it along with the Wedge ANtilles figure and they shipped the whole order together.

Anyway, I think this is one of the coolest ideas for an action feature ever!

For anyone that has an account with Robby.jp there will be a limited re-issue of the R2-D2 version in January.  Naturally this appeared after I got mine off ebay ::)  I didn't pay any more than I would have at SWS.com but I did pay more than from Robby.jp.

I finally do have one in hand and it looks pretty much identical in terms of scale.  Nice piece and though I haven't yet played with it, it looks well worth the price.

I got that same e-mail Brent.  I've pre-ordered the remote control R4-P17 and R2-Q5, so this comes at just the right time since I never did get my hands on the R2-D2.

They're an absolute blast to roll around a hard floor or table...  I can attest to that.  I reviewed the R2-D2 so if you want some opinion it's around somewhere, but yeah it was fun to mess with.  :)

THe packaging is nice to keep too and I'm not much of a packaging fan...  I don't usually even comment much on it, but for stuff like VOTC, Evolutions, and these RC Astromechs it's definitely worth a nod.

I can imagine someone making a Death Star obstacle course for the black astromech...  :)

I somehow wish Tomy was doing unique paintjobs after R2-D2 though, rather than duplicating paintjobs Hasbro's already covered.  Like make a black with yellow markings Imperial astromech just for diversity's sake...  Or a totally unique color from the films perhaps.  Just something different that Hasbro wouldn't do (since it seems to be like pulling teeth to get them tod o what was actually in the films in the first place).

I picked up a few extra of these from Robby.jp if anyone is interested.  I'm happy to trade or sell.

If anyone's looking for the battle damaged version of the R2, I ordered some from Robby.  I can sell them for $22 USD and the shipping.  I'll have 7 available if anyone's interested.
