Title: Star Wars Transformers
Post by: Jeff on July 18, 2005, 01:16 PM
We all heard the rumors before Comic-Con, but Hsbro was silent and playing coy.

Rebelscum however claims to have more info (please take this as purely rumor for now):

Quote
While it's still very early in the development stages, and a lot depends on if retailers are willing to pick it up, here's a list of toys in the works (of the 12 that are planned):

Luke Skywalker / X-Wing Fighter
Darth Vader / TIE Fighter
General Grievous / Wheel Bike
Obi-Wan Kenobi / Jedi Starfighter
Boba Fett / Slave 1
Darth Maul / Sith Infiltrator
Anakin Skywalker / Jedi Starfighter
Snowtrooper / AT-ST
Clone Trooper / ARC-170 Fighter
Emperor Palpatine / Star Destroyer
Jango Fett / Slave 1

If all goes as planned, these should begin appearing early in 2006.

Egad, that sucks!  Isn't Toy Biz trying/tried this with the Marvel figures?   :-\

Figures that transform into vehicles?  Since when was Luke of Anakin a robot?    ::)

If this pans out, there is no way I'll buy these.  No way, no how.

IMHO, yet another lame ass concept coming from Hasbro - stop trying to force new lines on us and use that development money for NEW 3.75" stuff!   >:(

Sigh.  Hasbro will never learn.  You don't transform people into vehicles.  ::) You take the best of two popular franchises and merge them - Star Wars vehicles that turn into giant ass ******* robots.  I'd actually buy those if done right.  And don't tell me about licensing issues or **** like that.  Hasbro has already done something similar to what I proposed.  They made a Transformer called Snowcat.  Transforms from a robot to the old GIJoe snow vehicle.

Bunch of ******* morons.

Not something that I am particularly interested in personally, unless they are much cooler than I think.  I agree with Mikey, if Hasbro is to do something like this....they should take the vehicles (X-Wing, etc.) and have them turn into robots.  If they want to include Luke, Boba, etc., just have a figure packed in that can pilot the ship.  If they turn Luke and all the rest into "robots", that will be lame.

It wouldn't be the first Star Wars transformer. Takara had a Transforming X-Wing out in the 70's.

I can't get over the nuttiness of the old "transformer"

It doesn't really become anything! lol, you just move the wings around!

I'm not as down on this transformer idea as some of the others I'm hearing like the choppers, ugh!

I think this idea could work if done right.  and it's funny I'm saying this becasue i never liked the old real transformers.  Surer the vehicle part of the toy looked great but the robot part always sucked.

AS far as that GH dune buggy/X-wing thing, I didn;t like it either but I saw it at Wal-Mart, it's actually not all that bad.

Well I started writing a new topic in the Saga 06 section, but then realized I should check here first. So here's what I was going to say...  :D

At first I thought this idea was freaking ridiculous, but giving it some thought on the drive to work this evening and I thought it might be doable. I think it would only work though if it were Transformers characters who's vehicle modes were Star Wars ships. I think RS suggest it would be SW characters who transform into their ships, and I just think that's retarded, I can't imagine anyone buying into that concept. But going on the thoughts of TF's who turn into SW ships, here's what I think they can come up with...

Autobots
* Optimus Prime (Millenium Falcon)
* Bumblebee (Landspeeder)
* Jetfire (X-Wing Fighter)
* Jazz (A-Wing Fighter)
* Hot Rod (Jedi Starfighter)
* Ironhide (Republic Gunship)
* Prowl (Snowspeeder)

Decepticons
* Megatron (Star Destroyer)
* Soundwave (Darth Vader's TIE Fighter)
* Starscream (TIE Interceptor)
* Skywarp (TIE Fighter)
* Ravage (AT-AT Walker)
* Laserbeak (AT-ST Walker)
* Shockwave (Slave 1)

And of course the most obvious piece they could make...
* Unicron (Death Star)

What do you all think? Any other ideas for TF characters to turn into SW vehicles?

Let's Play Jeopardy!

THE ANSWER:  The Twin-Pod Cloud Car, an AT-TE Clone Walker, the continuation of the 7 inch Unleashed line, and a modular Death Star playset.

THE QUESTION:  What could the money devoted to the design and development of the Star Wars Transformers line have been used for instead?

The one that looks even remotely decent is the Jedi Starfighter.  It's the only one that really transforms from a SW vehicle to a big ass ******* robot.

Still not buying it, though.
Title: Re: Star Wars Transformers?
Post by: Brian on September 27, 2005, 09:22 AM
Likely a pass for me as well, unless I buy one just for novelty's sake.  If they had made them more like traditional Transformers, and not tried to make the SW ships look like "characters" so much, I think they would be better received.  That said, the kids (and TF collectors) might love them.  I know that one of our nephews really likes anything relating to Transformers.  I know I probably would have found them pretty cool when I was a kid, at the height of SW and Transformer (Gen 1) popularity.

I hate to admit it, but I agree.  Although I'm certainly not in a big hurry to buy one of these, I may have to grab one to open and display.  I have a heck of a time passing on anything Darth Vader related, so if I come across this, it'll likely end up in my cart.   ::)

But I won't buy any.

Funny, the Transformer fans on thier forums seem to really like them, but the SW fans seem to dislike them.  I won't go as far as to say Hate them like the Froce Battler Obi.

Anyone know hoew common it is for the Transformer line to be a cross-collectible?  Meaning do they produce transformers that tie in to other licenses?

Weird.

Title: Re: Star Wars Transformers?
Post by: Ben on January 11, 2006, 03:21 AM
I bought Obi-Wan tonight. I dig it, but I would rather have seen stuff like Starscream as an X-Wing, Skywarp as a TIE Fighter,  Megatron as Han's blaster, and Optimus Prime as the Millenium Falcon. (Not to mention the obvious Unicron as the Death Star....)

This TF has a lot of kibble. The 'wings' of the Jedi Starfighter really aren't involved in the transformation at all. They just tuck around to the back. I guess they're supposed to resemble Obi-Wan's robe.

The lightsabers aren't nearly long enough for a figure this size, and that's immediately obvious once it's in the robot's hand.

The face looks generic enough that it could pass for just some random Cybertonian. The lil' pilot Obi-Wan fits in the cockpit and can be seen in both vehicle and robot modes, as if he was piloting a mech. That's a pretty cool touch.

I'll buy more of these, I'm sure. I seem to be the only one locally who digs them, since these have been sitting at Target for a week and the only one that's sold is the Obi-Wan on my desk. Again, this idea would have done well to include characters from the regular Transformers property instead of having Vader transform into a TIE Fighter.

It's a 'so close, and yet so far' situation here.
Title: Re: Star Wars Transformers?
Post by: Ben on January 15, 2006, 03:41 AM
I picked up Luke tonight.

This one is actually pretty damn good. The X-Wing lends itself well to a Transformer.
The transformation is pretty easy. Not G1 easy, but easier than some of the more recent TFs.

The legs are a little skinny, but it's to be expected since both legs are formed from the nose end of the X-Wing. The feet were a little wonky at first, but I figured them out. (All those years of schoolin' payin' off, mom and dad!)

He also doesn't hold his lightsaber, at all. So I gave him one of Obi-Wan's and he's managed to keep that one in his hand for the last five minutes. It's also a little back heavy since two of the wings are just tucked in back, while the other two wings are on the shoulders.

I like this one a lot better than Obi-Wan, that's for sure. I could see myself buying another to make a Starscream version, since all that would be required is removal of the orange visor on the face and a simple repaint of the helmet and orange areas on the body, maybe to something red, more befitting Starscream. The face is silver, so with a black helmet, that's pretty close to Starscream, IMO.

I'm not sure about buying Vader and Grievous yet. Nodoby else is buying these, so there's no rush there.

I've been tempted to pick up one of these just for the heck of it (X-Wing Luke most likely), but have held off so far.  I think if I get any from this line, this Falcon will be it.  I mean, its Han and Chewie, and it sounds like it could be pretty neat.  I don't need the whole line of these, but having something like the Falcon just for the heck of it might be fun.

Just an observation after visiting Wal-Mart this past weekend....I don't know if this is the case everywhere or not, but our local store has just gobs of the Transformers now.  The pegs in the "regular" aisle are full, an endcap is full, and the "spillover/bonus" aisle they have has a big section full of them too.  I think they are all from the first wave, although I didn't look through them.  I don't know how they're selling otherwise, but our WM now has gobs of them to get rid of.  No basic figures on the pegs, but plenty of Transformers and Choppers :P.

I'm so sick of these damned things clogging the pegs and shelves in every store I step into these days.  I saw at least 25+ SW Transformer cases on pallettes at two of our WMs last week, so these things are gonna be around forever, probably.

I finally saw the Falcon set with the two 3" Titanium gold ships in it the other day at WM as well.  Took forever for that thing to come out.  Anyone recall if that's an exclusive, or if it's gonna be a wide release?  Now I've just got to figure out a way to get the ships without the dumb Falcon.  Ugh.

Definitely one line that I never bought in to.

I picked up the CW version ARC-170 last night at WM for my Lil' Brother. I'm not into these but felt the Clone Wars paint job on the tiny Clone trooper that comes with the ship was cool...right down to the 'eyes' painted on his helmet. A little too Ex Universy for my tastes but still a good paintjob on something so tiny nonetheless.

Got the Death Star/Vader Transformer this evening, and I like it a lot.  I can now go bowling with it.  It took me a while to convert it from Vader to the DS.  The electronic lights and sounds go together well, and the saber and super laser projectile light up very nicely.  The cape, minifigs, and miniTIEs are cool although the wings on the miniTIEs come off pretty easy.  Haven't tried changing it back to DV mode yet; it took me a while to get it into a ball, so I'll just admire the DS on the built in stands for now.

All repacks except for the Clone Wars Gunship?

Vader's Tie - white
Snowspeeder - battle damaged
AT-AT - shadow
Turbo Tank - white
Gunship - black deco (2nd 3 3/4 release)
Starfighter - maroon?  (I'm colorblind)

Oh...I picked up the Death StarFormer this morning at Target for $11.61.  Not a bad deal considering I haven't seen this thing since it first came out.

I wonder if that's the space whale paintjob on a Republic Gunship.  They already did a regular Gunship.  I guess they need to repaint that one.

General Grievous' starfighter and TIE Bomber in Sept!

JI: Can you tell us what new Transformers/Star Wars sculpts we might see for this year?

Hasbro: Four all-new sculpts are planned for later this Fall. We are going to be revealing all of them (and possibly more) at Comic Con, but we'll give you a little taste of our September wave: General Grievous/Grievous Starfighter, and TIE Pilot/TIE Bomber.

I'm probably the only one collecting these things, but I found the Tie Bomber, Grievous's Starfighter, and Anakin's CW Fighter w/ring this morning at Target.

Does anyone know if the Cross-Over packaged blue Obi-Wan JSF is a straight repack from the WM Galactic Showdown JSF?  They look the kind of the same from the pics, but I'm not exactly sure.

UGH!  I'm really hating that I have to keep buying these things, but I feel compelled to because I'm a Transformers collector.  Most of them look great in vehicle modes (kinda makes up for no Action Fleet) but they look like **** when transformed.

Not looking forward to when Hasbro gets around to GI Joe vehicles either   :-\

I saw the repainted black Imperial Shuttle and Endor AT-AT Transformers at Target today.  Sigh, now there is a "shadow" imp shuttle and green splotched AT-AT.   ;)

As mentioned by an RS forum member, the AT-AT repaint does have a new head sculpt.  It has an Imperial Trooper head.

The newest Republic Gunship release has some slight modifications and repainting.  The nose art shows a Salacious Crumb like character dropping a bomb, the windows in the canopy are painted, the wing turrets are painted solid, full solid doors are included, but the side ball turrets are not.

I picked up the V19 Torrent/Clone Pilot and AT-TE/Captain Rex SW Transformers at a local Target this afternoon.  I had a chance this evening to "play" with them.  The V19 can be posed in flight and landing modes when in ship form which I thought was cool.  The Rex's legs come off easily (sounds like a common problem with AT-TEs ;)).  The leg pieces snap on at the thigh, and when they're pulled during the transformation, they just don't hold.

I like them both.  I do wish that these Crossovers came with minifigs.

Here are a couple of pics.

Nice....I guess.  I still have the last wave sitting in the back of my truck from a few months back.  I don't really care for these things too much any longer especially with the higher price point - other than the fact that they look like Action Fleet vehicles - and I'm "upset" that they don't include mini figs or the spinny thingy.   >:(

Here a little bit on Star Wars Transformers from the SW Hasbro 5/8/09 Q&A:

SWActionNews.com: With the Unleashed Battle Packs coming to their end, and the Titaniums finishing at the end of this year, and Muggs being reduced to only Toys R Us exclusives, what can you tell us about the viability of the Star Wars Transformers line?

Hasbro: Star Wars Transformers Crossovers is a strong line and will continue on through 2010.  Unleashed 2" actually shot up in popularity with the success of Clone Wars (after we had already made the decision to rest it). It's a likely candidate for return some day.

I reluctantly picked up the AT-TE, V-Wing & Torrent from TRU today because I had a $10 off a $50 coupon that was burning a hole in my pocket.  I have the baby AT-TE kickin it underneath the "real" version and just wow - cute.  Hasbro did a bang up job on it compared to big daddy.  I can understand the missing spinny disc thing, but I wish Hasbro would have at least kept the mini figs to fit in the cockpits.

I rarely transform these things into their mostly horrible bot modes so I really see these things as Action Fleet vehicles so it's all good in the hood since you can't see most of the bot parts in vehicle mode.

I picked up the new CW Kit Fisto/Jedi Starfighter Transformer at WM this afternoon.  It looks like the same CW JSF w/Ring mold except for the repainting and Kit Fisto's head sculpt.

I also noticed that the V-19 Torrent TF has white as the primary body paint now compared to the one I bought which has a darker tan.  The original 2 white stripes on the engine cylinders aren't pronounced anymore in the new version.  This must be a slight running paint change.

I have the baby AT-TE kickin it underneath the "real" version and just wow - cute.
Funny, I actually have baby AT-TE displayed on daddy AT-TE's back.

I think I missed a wave or two back then, but I don't remember seeing Salacious caked on the ship dropping bombs.  It had the longer doors too - like the new "deluxe" class vehicle has which I don't recall on previous releases of this vehicle in this line.  I don't recall seeing the turrets on this one either.   Were they on the previous ones?  I don't remember.   :-\

Thanks Mikey, it sounds like a repack.  Here are a couple of pics of what I found last year.  I still haven't found the Battle Droid Transformer, but I'm in no hurry to find it.  I'm pretty sure it'll show up in lots of quantity like with the others.

Saw the new tan repainted AAT/Battle Droid Commander, CW Y-Wing/Y-Wing Pilot, Twilight/Anakin, and the repainted Imperial colors V-Wing/Clone Pilot SW Transformers at SDCC yesterday.  The Twilight looks very interesting because in Anakin robot mode, R2 turns up as a separate figure.  These all have a release date of 10/30.

I just opened the Magnaguard, and while the canopy opens, there's no cockpit area to fit a mini-figure.  The Magnaguard's head resides in the cockpit area.  I still haven't bought the AAT yet, so I'm not sure about that one or the other 2 new molds shown off at SDCC.

Ya these things are like pulling teeth for me if/when I finally decide a purchase is warrented.  I got the blue AAT which I've only seen at retail twice and the Magnaguardfighter as of the last few months.  Wish this line would just go away personally.  Obviously there's only 2 people on this site that collect these so that has to tell you something.  I don't even transform these things - just using the crossover line to make up for the lack of Action Fleet.

I have a few around the house, too.  They are absolutely huge on the birthday party scene.  The kids aren't too keen on them, but I guess I've had some fun futzing with them while I'm watching TV here and there.   :shrug:

For a bunch of lame backpack transformations, it's amazing how impossible it is to handle the newer ones without them popping into a million amputated bits and pieces.  If I was more motivated, I'd customize up some sturdier joints - but, really, why bother?

The local TJ Maxx had 3 repainted/retooled head transformers that I had to pick up at $7.99 each - Obi-Wan Kenobi/Red Jedi Starfighter, Anakin Skywalker/CW Y-Wing and Cad Bane/Xanadu Blood.  I'm glad I never saw these at retail at full price.
