Watto's Junk Yard / Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe
« on: October 26, 2016, 09:24 AM »
I didn't think this quite fit under the Avengers thread, and with a bunch of non-Avengers Disney Marvel films upcoming, I figured I'd start a dedicated thread.

Dr. Strange reviews are coming in, and they are typically Marvel spectacular...

I went to an IMAX 3D 15-minute preview a few weeks back, and the jaw-dropping nature of the visuals simply can't be described in words.  It's like Inception on amphetamine.  It's like the flight sequence at the end of 2001 x 10,000.  I was absolutely engrossed.  And that was in small snippets.

Watto's Junk Yard / Westworld (HBO)
« on: October 7, 2016, 11:47 AM »
I caught the premiere Sunday, then watched it again later in the week.  I've been really excited for this series, and I gotta say I wasn't disappointed.  They seeded a number of cool story threads, and this looks like it's gonna be satisfyingly dark and twisted.

I'm most impressed by the actors playing broken androids.  The scene that had the dad, Peter Abernathy, swapping between old and new builds and previous characters he'd been programmed to portray - that was just awesome.  A clinic on acting in general, and on embodying a character in particular.  And doing it while pretending to be buggy and twitchy - amazing.  The guy who played first-gen Old Bill was great as well.

I also really enjoyed what they did with the music.  Converting Black Hole Sun to a player piano piece was great, as was their treatment of Paint it Black.

So - anybody else watching?

Hail to the king, BABY!

Perhaps the most storied video game sequel of all time is actually going to come out!  I was hoping 3DRealms would sell the code they'd developed to date to somebody so the game would actually see the light of day.

Hell of a win for PAX, getting the official announcement.

Watto's Junk Yard / Archer on fX
« on: February 13, 2010, 05:30 PM »
I've been watching the new series "Archer" on the fX network, and it's been surprisingly good.  It's by a group that did some [adult swim] programs - Frisky Dingo and Sealab 2021.  The humor is dark and irreverent.  Lots of adult humor.  And each episode except the first has had me laughing.  It sticks to a continuity unlike Sealab, and it's more couched in reality than Dingo.  Anyway, I highly recommend it.

Check this out:  Jet-mounted laser destroys missiles

One step closer to laser dogfights in space!  Though I gather the lasers are invisible and move at the speed of light...

Watto's Junk Yard / Coming Soon - 3D HDTV
« on: January 8, 2010, 08:04 AM »
The big news coming out of CES is 3D.  I found this "timeline" to be particularly interesting:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/43547

Of note:  "The new sets are expected to cost $200 to $300 more than comparable 2D sets."

$200-$300 is peanuts.  I was expecting a much higher price on the first models... like double the cost of a standard HDTV.  I think adoption will be fairly widespread at the price they now predict.

The technology is different than movie theater 3D.  You won't wear polarized lenses... you'll wear glasses with shutters that open and close in sync with the image on the screen.  The shutters open and close so quickly that you don't notice.  And it's supposed to be very effective.

The announced a couple weeks ago that Blu-ray discs have a 3D spec, and some current players, including the Playstation3, will support 3D with a firmware upgrade.  Also 3D discs will play in 2D on 2D sets, so you won't have to worry about choosing between different versions.

So it all looks very promising.  I had be planning on upgrading my HDTV to a 3D set when prices dropped in 18-24 months, but I'll probably be able to do it a lot sooner given this new info.

New characters from the Smallville Justice League TV movie

I gotta say, compared to previous Smallville characters, these ones look particularly faithful to their comic book counterparts.

Watto's Junk Yard / PSWCS fundraiser to benefit wounded war vets
« on: July 28, 2009, 12:25 PM »
Hey guys - this was posted on the JD front page a while back, but I know a lot of guys don't go there too often, so I wanted to post something about it here.

PSWCS is selling these "challenge coin" style medallions to benefit a charity called Operation Ward 57.  OW57 buys comfort items for wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who end up at Walter Reed.  We hope to raise around $5500 for the charity by selling out.  100% of the proceeds go to the charity.  They're $10 each shipped.

The medallion is limited to a 1-time run of 1000.  We got Lucasfilm's permission to produce the medallions, so it's an authorized Star Wars collectible.  It even has the little copyright date on it.  And they're AWESOME.  First off, they're HUGE!  They're like old-style silver dollar big.  1.75" diameter is way bigger than it sounds.  They're also very hefty, and they're protected by an enamel coating.  Super high-quality stuff.  The artwork was done by Mike Nair, a graphic artist in PSWCS who did just a phenomenal job.  We're all thrilled with the final product.  And we've gotten nothing but positive reactions from our buyers.

If we sell out, we're looking at doing another one next year.  But we still have about 300 remaining.  So I'm hoping some of my friends here will help out.  You won't be disappointed, and it's for a great cause!

Here's the sale site:  http://www.pswcs.com/OperationWard57

Watto's Junk Yard / Worst drawing in the history of art...
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:16 PM »
I've been reading some ripping on Rob Liefeld today.  This despite being super busy at work.  You look and you just can't turn away.

It started here:
http://progressiveboink.com/archive/robliefeld.html

Great stuff.  You'll laugh.  And it ended with what must be the worst drawing I've seen from a person whose profession is art...

I challenge you to find a worse drawing!!!  (the ones on http://CreatureCantina.com don't count... that's a hobby, not a profession!   :P )

Watto's Junk Yard / PSWCS charity toy drive!
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:11 AM »
Hey folks,

PSWCS is holding our annual Toy Drive for Garrison Carida.  We put together a couple commercials to promote the drive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98dRmfogzbI

We'll be collecting toys for the next couple months.  So if you have any old POTF2 figures taking up space in your basement and want to do something nice with them, you should consider donating them to this good cause.   ;D
