Customizing Tips and Tricks / Painting Facial Hair?
« on: March 31, 2006, 05:06 PM »
How do you guys go about painting facial hair on a custom?  I've been trying to paint the 5 o'clock shadow on a Jango Fett mini-bust that I'm working on, but it comes out looking like he has grey dirt on his face.  I didn't think I needed to sculpt anything because it's just stubble (and the 12" hasbro version was just painted on), but I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.  Should I try to add some flecks of black and light grey to give it more depth?
Sorry for the lack of pics, I'll try to take some this weekend.  I figured I'd try to see if there were any techniques out there for painting facial hair.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Durability vs. Detail
« on: December 26, 2005, 01:52 PM »
I thought this might be an interesting conversation.

Which is more important to you, the "Durability" or the "Detail" of a custom figure?
When I say "Durability" I really mean factory quality - it can be played with.  The parts don't pop in and out easily, you're not afraid of breaking anything ultra-fragile, all of the joints move properly, etc etc.
"Detail" means much that the figure is more a "work of art" for lack of a better term.  Articulation might be sacrificed for better details; parts might be broken off easily if "normally" played with, etc.

Personally, I almost always go for durability - I want these figures to be like what I would have played with when I was 7 or 8...or 9... or 23... ;)  I try to keep my figures as close to "factory" in that sense as I can; sometimes it means that I am unable to use a certain part or I have to go about making the figure in a different way, but overall I think it's worth it.
I'm not really sure why I go about doing that, but what do you guys do?

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Painting Gentle Giant Mini-Busts
« on: December 7, 2005, 08:59 PM »
I know I haven't been posting much lately, but hopefully that'll change soon.  Anyway, I started getting into Gentle Giant Mini-Busts and I've been slowly expanding my collection.  Obviously, Jango Fett and Boba Fett are way out of my price range right now, but I was able to score a Chrome Jango Fett for $50 shipped.
Here's where the "Customs" Section comes into play.  I want to paint my own version of Jango Fett (it's gotta be cheaper than shelling out $200 for GG's version)

Has anybody stripped the chrome off of the Chrome Mini-Busts or does anybody know of an effective way of doing so without damaging the mini-bust?  I talked to some of the NJSWCC members and they recommended acetone or finger nail polish remover, but I thought I'd double check with you guys.  Any recommendations?
As of right now, I think I might try a bit of nail polish remover on a small part of the mini-bust to see how that goes, but I'm not really expecting it to work very well.

Any help would be most appreciated!  Thanks guys  ;D

Star Wars Action Figures / 12" Luke Jedi Custom Project
« on: October 29, 2005, 02:38 PM »
Let me preface my odd request by stating that this is purely in the interests of custom 12" figures ...nothing more, nothing less  ;)
I've been "upgrading" my 12" figures using Dragon/BBi bodies, but I have a question about the Luke Jedi (the Saga version with the green lightsaber).  Is his head like the Ultimate Vader Anakin head and the AotC Obi-Wan head (i.e. has a neck "peg") or is it like the older Hasbro 12" figures (i.e. neck joint is inline with the jawline)?  The reason I ask is that I was able to easily do a head swap on the AotC Obi-Wan, but had to use a different body to head-swap the Luke X-Wing Pilot, Biggs, and Wedge.
Does anybody have any pics of the 12" Luke Jedi figure that shows his neck-peg?

Customizing Tips and Tricks / 12" Figure Questions
« on: September 14, 2005, 08:17 PM »
Hey guys,
I want to try my hand at making a 12" Commander Bly and a 12" ARC Trooper (ep. II version).  Here are my initial thoughts about how to go about doing this:

Commander Bly:
- 12" ROTS Clone Trooper figure - sand off the insignias
 - Kama: 2 pieces of tan cloth glued to the belt
 - holsters: 2 pistol holsters (probably from those cheap 12" figures at KB Toys) with some sort of straps (probably the same straps from those 12" KB soldier figures) glued to the belt.
 - Visor: I picked up a 12" accessory set from KB Toys that has night vision headgear that could, with a little reworking, serve as a visor for the Commander Bly.  I will probably attach it by using small plastic rods or maybe even screws glued into the sides of the Clone's head (ala Frankenstein, although higher  ;)).
 - Pauldron - I plan on cutting some oval-ish shapes out of a soda bottle (probably 2 or 3 identical shapes) and then gluing them together to get the proper thickness.  Then I will cut out a slot and a neckhole to slide it onto the Clone Trooper's body.  This will be similar to how the 12" Sandtrooper's Pauldron attaches (or the same as the 3 3/4" ARC Trooper).  I will then add the left part of the pauldron and the rest of the details with some more soda bottle plastic or fake credit cards.

12" ARC Trooper:
- I want to use a more articulated base body than the Ep. II Clone Trooper body, so I bought a Blue Angel Pilot figure from TRU.com for $8 (I think it's called "Elite Force" and looks to be articulated pretty well).  I plan on doing an armor/bodysuit swap onto this new base figure.
 - Hopefully the helmet will be able to fit over the Pilot base figure - does anybody know how to do headswaps on 12" figures?  I'm pretty sure that boil and pop doesn't work on these guys.  Should I just cut off the Clone's head and hope that it will fit over the pilot's head?  Should I cut off both heads and glue the Clone's head on the Pilot's body?
 - Kama: same recipe as the Commander Bly mentioned above
 - Pauldron - I could possibly use a 12" Sandtrooper pauldron for this custom.  If I can't locate one, then I will try doing the soda bottle method.
 - Antenna - as of right now, I think I will have to use some more soda bottle plastic and just make sure that I glue enough together to get the proper thickness/sturdiness...

Anyway, what do you guys think of these intended projects?  Any advice on making a 12" figure?  The only ones that I have done before are a body swap on the electronic Fett and a few repaints (like the 12" ROTS Clone Trooper that I made a while ago).  I really have no idea what I'm doing with 12" figures and I'm pretty much making it up as I go along, so any ideas/help would be most appreciated!
if my post makes no sense, please excuse me, school isn't being too favorable to me these days  ;)

GG Bust up VOTC Hybrid

How'd you do that?  I've seen a few on eBay and I tried doing it, but there was no neck on mine.  Did I hollow out the bust-ups helmet too much?  Maybe I should ask this in the customs thread, but seeing that pic made me realize that there is some way to do it.... ???

Newbies / Hey all, newb here
« on: May 13, 2005, 01:22 AM »
Hey guys,
I just joined up (I'm pretty active on the Galactic Hunter, theJawa.com, and the NJSWCC forums) after Chewie told me to join up here as well  ;)
I admit that I've been a "lurker" for a little bit, but you guys seem cool so I figured that I might as well register and try to contribute something.
I've been doing a lot of customs lately, so I'll post some pics and check out the threads.
I look forward to talking to everybody  ;D
