Collect All 92! / Re: Han Solo (Bespin Outfit)

The fact that we have to go that far back to find a "modern" counterpart to the original is just painful.

 :'(

Anyway, I too received mine as part of the Sears Bespin set.  Wow, I remember how much of a thrill it was to receive the new Christmas catalogs and see new figures that were included in the exclusive sets for the first time.  Aside from the backs of the cards and the small catalogs that came with the vehicles, carrying cases, 12" figures and playsets, this was how we found out about new figures and toys back then.

I also remember how cool it was to find new mini Kenner catalogs in a toy.  I would sometimes stop dead in my tracks from opening the toy to see what was coming next.  I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw that we would be getting a Millennium Falcon!

Good times!

This is about as close to perfect as a vintage redo can get.  Aside from needing a little more metallic color, it's perfect.

Seriously great figure that I would LOVE to see reissued on a vintage card!

Said before and I'll say it again, LOVE these topics.  The Power Droid was easily the biggest "WTF?" figure in the line.

As a kid, I totally remember looking at the back of the card (the way we received our new figure info back then) and seeing this guy for the first time.  I literally had no idea what to make of him.  Was it a figure, a piece of furniture, was it a misprint, just...what?

As it stands, it will always have that charm associated with it.

I would LOVE, and think we will eventually get, a "Lars Pit" repaint or redo of this guy.  While I really like the Power Droid/Jawa pack in, it's still isn't the WTF Droid I know and love.

Keep these topics coming, and now it's on to Fett - which should be VERY interesting.

I like the update, but wee NEED a retractable leg, as do ALL R5s, R2s, etc...  Also, enough with that ugly glued-on panel already!!!  :(

Also, "astro droids" have just gotten too big over the last few years.  R2 goes up to poor 3PO's chest, and almost to Luke's shoulder, now.

I hope they scale it back with the next mold.

vtsc Luke Pilot received an update in Tlc saga legends, with a more detailed paintjob for the helmet, the other details were minimum, different hair color, lighter jumpsuit.

Yep, it was a repack of the Walmart Droid Factory two pack that came with the damaged R2.  One of the more noticeable changes was the color update of the hanging leg straps from gray to silver - which actually works when compared to the real costume.  The added details on the helmet and the change in face and hair color really help as well.

Definitely the the better version of the modern Luke X-Wing Pilot figures.

I dig both of these little beasts - so funky.  I'm glad Hasbro did the Holiday Special version.  If not, we'd have a big ol' gap in our "Modern Update" list.  As has been mentioned, none of the cantina aliens had even remotely correct outfits or proportions, so this works.

As an owner of a Blue Snaggletooth as a kid, I remember seeing the Red Snaggletooth figure on the pegs for the first time and simply being blown away.  Back in those days, variations, and even figures, would hit without the long "heads up" we get these days from magazines and the internet, so when you saw something like this, the cloth cape Jawa or big head Han, it was a genuine shocker.

I really miss that feeling.

No brainer and an easy pick, but I could have done without the removable helmet for this version.  Helmet stayed on for the entire film.

Gotta go with Ewok 3PO on this one.

Articulation issues aside.  An update to the original NEEDS to be vacuum metallized.

No exceptions.

I'd love to see a pure version of him reissued on a Star Wars card sans throne.

This pick is a no brainer, but I still have a few problems with him that I would love to see fixed on a reissue:

• The skin tone.  What is with this nasty jaundice yellow skin color that Hasbro decides to pump out every now and then?  They did the same thing with the VOTC Leia.  For the love of god, it looks like they're suffering from liver disease.

• The belt.  Walks away from dead horse.

Those are pretty easy fixes.  They already have a holster strap free leg from the latest Death Star Han, so...

Also, another dead hose issue, but I know Harrison Ford was pretty thin in '76, but this is still slightly too thin.  No chance of fixing it, but it's still worth mentioning.

As it stands, one of the better reissues.

« on: April 15, 2010, 02:31 PM »

Awesome series.  I've actually been keeping a set of "updated 92" aside from all my other figures for quite some time now.  This series was the reason I joined this forum, so...

I've agreed with every pick thus far but this one.

I'm going to have to go with the Legacy Collection reissue of the VOTC Stormtrooper for a few different reasons.

• First, just from an aspect of absolute purity.  This IS a Stormtrooper - not a Spacetrooper, not a Sandtrooper (though I'm surprised to see a gear stripped Dewback Trooper wasn't mentioned), not an "Insert Environment Here" Trooper.  No need for modifications or gear removal. the VOTC Stormtrooper is a PURE update to the vintage Stormtrooper right out of the package.

• Second, the helmet on the Spacetrooper is WAY too small - he's a pinhead..  It is also slightly misshaped due to the soft nature of the material and the head bulging underneath.

• Next, the head rides up WAY too high on the neck - again mostly because the head is too small.  The actual Stormtrooper helmet almost rests on the shoulders.

• No removable helmet.  Again, a matter of purity.  NO removable helmet on the original, so...  However, I do respect that the Spacetrooper features the Joe Johnston sculpt rather than the "keep your prequels out of my OT" clone sculpt.

• Finally, I went with the recent carded reissue of the VOTC Stormtrooper because much of the the white on the original VOTC version yellowed almost immediately - nasty, nasty, ugly, cheap polystyrene.  It was never pure white, but got worse REALLY fast.  The new one is gleaming white.

The VOTC Stormtrooper is by no means perfect, but, in my opinion, it's the closest thing we have to a true update to the original vintage figure.  It's a great figure and one of the better updates in the series.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on this guy.

I'm going to cry when we get the the Death Squad Commander.
